  • In this video, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at Star Fox Armada. This game was pitched internally at Retro Studios, which if successful would have released on the Nintendo Wii U. Unfortunately the Armada pitch was unsuccessful, with the game joining the legions of other Nintendo games that were rejected, cancelled, or lost.

Given Nintendo's negative reaction to a third-party studio's literal interpretation of "bounty hunter" regarding Samus, I'm not entirely surprised that a game playing up the Star Fox heroes as for-hire mercenaries didn't get made. Though I agree that the idea might have potential, at least. In both cases, really

This isn't as hard a reboot as the last two from Nintendo, but...I'm sorry, this is still too hard a reboot idea. No, obviously DON'T follow on from Command and all of that game's problems. MANY writing issues AND Krystal's next level terrible costume design choice, that makes her original costume seem dignified in comparison. Yes, the gold bra is sleazy, but...Pink Jumpsuit with Blue Fur? GET. CHANGED. But, yeah, all anyone NEEDS to do is to just have the courage to continue on from Assault and pitch THAT to Nintendo.
As for what my pitch would BE?
      Trailer:
We open, Fox McCloud is in bed. Fur caked with dried sweat. Krystal comes in, in her Assault outfit, carrying a bowl of soup. Fox sniffs, waking up. Krystal, "Oh, good. You're awake." Fox, "I had a really bad dream. I pushed you off the team, for...stupid reasons, you joined Star Wolf and were wearing this hot pink jumpsuit and..." Krystal presses a finger to his lips and laughs. "First? I don't need to know your fever dreams in full detail. Secondly, hot pink!? I KNOW I don't have the fur for that. Red-pink might work, however." Fox laughs. "Krystal...(hack, hack)...will you marry me?" Krystal looks at him. "I...look, you've had a scare. I love you, but...three months. If you still feel it's the right decision in three months? Sure."
Back of the Box Point 1:
Ground Combat as Turn Based RPG. (Fox: Lasers, staves, and, now brought over to main-line Star Fox from Smash Bros., Fox McCloud summoning fire from within, for various purposes, as his MP move pool. Falco: Knife melee, also summons fire. Slippy: Wrench melee and gadgets. Krystal: Same Melee as Fox, but with Ice Magic.)
Back of the Box Point 2:
Social Sim Your Star Fox (Over an, either 12 or 18 month in story, campaign, progress Fox McCloud from bachelor to husband...and father...?)
Back of the Box Point 3:
Nine Ground Bosses, Nine Space Bosses. (Yes, Star Fox needs money, and ground combat jobs DO pay less than Arwing jobs, but 1/2 the boss fights are ground bosses. So you have to risk lower cash to not die.)

@@operandassembler Not just Star Fox. A lot of Nintendo IPs are suffering due to mismanagement due to Miyamoto's influence.
Like Majora's Mask for instance. One of the best Zelda games in the franchise was made as a bet between Aonuma and Miyamoto because Miyamoto would let him try new things. Majora's Mask could have been a bigger game but since the team had to work around Miyamoto's inane deadline a lot of them were shelved.
The same with Paper Mario and how the Toads are one-dimensional and Wind Waker where the team hid the fact that Link was cartoonish from Miyamoto until it was literally impossible to redo and still make the deadline. It's actually funny how many great titles we wouldn't have had if everyone at Nintendo were just a yes man to Miyamoto.

As a big Star Fox fan, I'm sad that the project never came to fruition. Especially when the scope was to be a sequel to 64 being my first and favorite Star Fox game growing up. I see Retro having ambition for their projects but at the same time I can see why either Nintendo or Miyamoto shut those ideas down. In my eyes it's all on Miyamoto who says what as Star Fox is one of his IPs. Glad to see more of this being shown in the light

Knowing what could have been makes me sad. All I want is a Star Fox game with the structure of Star Fox 64, but with the evolved story and world building of Assault, with modernization. I can't understand why Nintendo refuses to evolve Star Fox in the direction everyone wants! It's unbelievable. Who knows, maybe a new Star Fox game is currently being worked on, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe Nintendo thinks, Smash Ultimate, Starlink, and Star Fox 2 are enough Stat Fox content to keep us busy for now and we'll have to wait until the next gen console for a new Star Fox.

I also didn't mind the on-foot stuff in Assault personally...though it is objectively true that the Arwing, Landmaster & Blue Marine are why we love Star Fox ( seriously, if/when we finally do get a new game is it really too much to ask for a couple Blue Marine stages? 64 had just ONE and we've never even seen the vehicle since....not even in Steel Diver where it could have been a really great unlockable )

I liked the online and local co op ideas, that its an open world-ish dogfighting, mission based war game with some interactive lobby elements in some stages or places. I hope the new aestethic doesn't go "realistic" as that isn't really Nintendo's thing but has its own distinct animation style, although I dislike the idea of simulating muppets which for me is probably the weakest aspect of this pitch. The game was very unpopular but I think Starfox Zero had some intersting visuals that could be updated and have the mechanics changed for a Switch remake of Zero. Good episode!

Nintendo still can't understand what their fans want. The StarFox series showed its potential in Adventures, Assault and Command. It is very inappropriate for this universe, which has a good story and various material, to ignore and reset its savings. They probably want to go to the high-selling periods, but I think they would sell better if they listened to the expectations of us who are fans of this series. And How can you not use Krystal potential. In my opinion, failure to use a character that brings the series to life with its potential background story, design and dialogues can play high on the list of Nintendo's biggest mistakes.

I have to say that the concept that was for Star Fox Armada sounded pretty good and very Star Fox. Just hearing it really got my interest. If only we can get this to Nintendo for green light maybe putting it on forums for votes. It already got my vote. I think the issue that Star Fox faced was the trying to keep its roots and that is the arcade style rail shooter that started the first Star Fox but such style was due to hardware limitations back in the day and now a day such games style can get old really fast and make a really short experience comparing today's game. A good example in history I want to bring was Capcom faced a similar issue with Resident evil. The game style was fixed camera with prerendered background due tu hardware limitations and it was a great hit back in the day so they kept such style for the following sequels, but as hardware advanced allowing better 3d, that gameplay style fell obsolete, so for the next title they switch to 3rd person combat gameplay style for RE4 and we all know how successful it was making it a great example of evolution and adaptation. So, with that say, I think Star Fox instead of going for old, arcade style go for a more free but expansive space combat allowing for multiple things to do so that levels doesn't feel short. I'm sure with the hardware nowadays this is possible.

This is the game Star Fox needed, it addresses basically everything that’s kept the franchise from moving forward and that specifically held Zero back.
Nintendo needs to accept that they have no idea what to do with Star Fox as a brand and honestly haven’t since the N64.
The series, like Metroid, is the type of franchise that’s ripe for a western studio to reinvent because the games mostly appeal to western audiences. It’s honestly shocking they didn’t have Retro take on the franchise - especially when we now know this pitch was floating around.
Also side note: Nintendo needs to get more hands off with Retro. They’ve got a proven track record now, having created 5 of the best games of all time, there are clearly a lot of talented devs over there. A lot of people call Retro the new Rare but the big difference is 90s Rare was a place where they let the talented people have space to create. Goldeneye was released 2 years after the movie, Conker spent almost an entire console cycle getting scrapped and redone multiple times until it became the unique and wonderful Bad Fur Day, but then Microsoft buys them and starts micromanaging and their quality drops until they’re relegated to making Kinect games.
That’s what Nintendo and Retro’s higher ups are doing to Retro. Stop micromanaging, let them make the games they want. Give them the keys to the kingdom they’ve earned it.
