I really wanna know the design inspirations/philosophies for the Ultra Beasts! Love how they're very abstract and break a lot of rules for how they usually design Pokemon, I guess how they went about Blaziken's human-ish design in the case of Gen 3
@@CyberKnightProbably well most powerful until Cinderace anyways, who got banned twice in a single generation while Blaziken isn't even good enough to be in OU in that Gen...
Tsukasa Tawada has earned my undying respect for holding onto the Orre region. Hearing that he seems to be the only staff member that seems to still be holding onto this small side series, and still occasionally performing the songs from it... It's nothing short of beautiful.
The one time I actually knew something in-depth already in a video like this one! I am watching him play songs every now and then and stumbled across his Colosseum performances. Deeply in love with his songs.
Where I lived people used to do that too. They painted chicks then sold them. The paint was really damaging for the chicks so all of them ended always ended up dying after one night. I found out about the paint being poison idk how and bought one chick and immidiatly washed him. He survived and grew up, everyday I played with him.
I used to have a massive hate-boner for this channel, but ever since they got Dr.Lava on (the guy behind this and a lot of other recent pokemon videos) I've been subtly impressed.
@SMD88 He writes for DYKG now. Most of his planned videos were turned into videos for this channel, I believe. On his twitter he was talking about gen 6 about a month back so I would not be surprised if we got something in the near future regarding it.
I appreciate the fact that these little known facts are things people actually don't know about the games and not what every poketuber has covered in the last 10 years.
But the sad thing is that Japanese people probably knew this for 20 years. I was kind of shocked how much of Pokémon was or even is now Japanese exclusive when I started to be more interested in Japanese pokemon a couple of years ago. But even during Gen 3/4 when I first got Internet access, I still remember reading news about Japanese pokemon things which I thought we would get in the west in the near future but ultimately remained Japanese exclusive to this day
I was really happy about the fact with Colosseum’s composer; a lot of songs in the Orre games were fantastic; high energy battle themes to work out to; tense themes while writing; and calming themes to make me feel safe and at home. I’m glad someone on the team was passionate about these games and would like to make another; they use a lot of strategies that are still used today and what’s been added since can only expand on what they can do.
I didn’t really see anything in the video about him wanting there to be another Colosseum game. Only that he liked the songs he made enough to want to perform them on his RUclips page, and talk bout them with the DYKG crew. Plus, he probably have songs from other games he’s worked on up on his RUclips page as well. Not saying he wouldn’t want to work on another game in the series, just that we can’t draw that conclusion based on anything seen here.
The grittier tones of Pokemon Colosseum were much appreciated at the time, and still appreciated even now. Recently, Pokemon games don't feel as if there is anything at stake. Taking away Pokemon from bad trainers and slowly opening up their hearts again was definitely an interesting dynamic and I suppose even granted more attachment to those Pokemon. I would definitely like to see something like it in the future.
Pokemon hasn’t managed to do what the most successful broad audience franchises have done: grow up with their audience. Lots of great idea in gen 3 and it’s spinoffs we’re dropped and it’s disheartening really
@@thomaslecomte1570 Pokemon is quite literally *THE* most successful broad audience franchise. Like, objectively so. Whether you want the themes present from the Orre games to come back or not (I wouldn't be opposed to it myself), Pokemon's managed to have an incredibly broad appeal regardless.
I wouldn't say it's grittier, but it is interesting to have Pokémon already customized with TMs and egg moves, and even moves they aren't supposed to have. That's really everything positive I can say about colosseum/XD. There's far more at stake in many other Pokémon games.
Last one I could consider gritty is BW. Plasma was such a cool team that got fleshed out into two games and developed three antagonists. The Pokemon wars in XY was also kinda brutal sounding. I know it has to change with the audience being primarily kids but like... Team Yell? Really?
Japanese kids are something else jeez, here you'll get hit with a animal cruelty fine for abandoning an animal or doing something like that. anyways It worked out backwards in the end lots love Blaziken now including myself favorite starter overall no shock there. 😂
I like how the Genious Sorority devs actually took into account that kids who were fans of pokemon in the late 90's are going to be older now and interested in more complex RADICAL settings and visuals, different from GF usual thought process of designing games for the same kids that never age I guess, or not even at least having a separate series that tries different tones
Seperate series that tries different tones Pokemon mystery dungeon: am I a joke (literal future dying. Mentions of you and others dying. Creepy Kidnapping a child to get money. Having to go up against the god of time atop a huge tower where the entire world is dying around you in a horrible future, and you know that even if u beat him, you will die But yeah I get you we need one with humans as the mcs
@@whiile1239 mystery dungeon is a clear spinoff that plays nothing like the main games. As a kid i thought XD and Colloseum were main games because they were litterally that good. (And as far as effort is concerned a side by side of Colloseum vs Let's Go aninimations is easy to find, especially double kick where in lets go its rotate to face target, hop, rotate back to 0°, rotate to face target, hop, rotate to 0°. In Colloseum a kabutops swings forward on its scythe arms to kick with both feet at once, even compared to SwSh the animations of Colloseum and XD just have so much more weight and effort put into them. Ignoring the obvious difference in resolution due to time of creation.) I think the fact the older animations hold up (and can be argued as being better), is a testament to the quality of the games. Add in other factors like team composition, level curves, general difficulty, ect and its not hard to see why fans want a return of something challenging. I don't see the grittyness as what makes them good, its just an aesthetic, the quality is in the objective underlying mechanics and polish. (The first boss, miror B has a rain team that is just missing thunder to be a competitively viable team, grant it is mainly the lotad line)
If you're the target demographic for Colosseum today, you weren't born yet when the game originally released. If you were the target demographic for Gen 1 when it released, a Pokemon game targeted towards you today would revolve around paying a mortgage and starting a family. I think the Colosseum series definitely should have continued, it's a type of Pokemon spinoff that we've been missing for a while - but the reason GameFreak keeps developing games for 11 year olds is because there are always new 11 year olds lol. Which mainline Pokemon games did you think should have been more mature? And how old were you when those games came out?
I’d say legends:Arceus might be the closest thing they’ve done to a mature pokemon game, since the tone is a bit more dark and the relationship between people and pokemon are less “you’re my best friend” and more out of fear or respect
100%, heck I was 10 when I played Colosseum and loved it, And now, man I wish more than anything that we got a Pokemon Anime with a mature theme! I watched a few episodes Journeys and it isn't for me...
I don't know why GF is so opposed to the Orre region. I remember years ago when the main US Pokemon site had a Q+A, and people were wondering if after Diamond and Pearl, Ash would be visiting the Orre region, to which the Pokemon responder was wondering why Orre showed up so much. THEY'RE GOOD GAMES, BRENT
As a side note, I can't remember what time frame that occurred in, but I do distinctly remember the main Pokemon US site having a Q+A section at some point, I believe somewhere around when DP came out. Might lead to some interesting finds if it's been archived somewhere
@@madnessarcade7447 I'm not saying whether an anime on that region would have been a good idea or not; my point is that it always seems that GF shoots it down. During Pokemon's last anniversary where they went through all of the generations/hardware I'm pretty sure Colosseum/XD had like 3 frames in the background, if even that
I actually heard about this already somehow, and found it be really surprising at the time. I somehow heard about it before finding an obscure article with him explaining in more detail exactly what took involving getting her character sprite coded into the game. I also heard about somehow before finding the article where he explained exactly what went in the hospital as well. He said that he was starting to write it up shortly after he got from the hospital while it was still fresh in his head. He honestly believes that one of his texts that he received while he was still holding the phone close to him made his daughter the way she is. I obviously did not save them considering that I thought I was the only person who knew at the time.
She’s probably a bit over 20 now. I wonder if she knows this story and how she feels about it- and about her dad and his work with Pokémon. I hope she’s proud
I believe that already explained to her everyrhing multiple times prior to her when she was very little at least. I believe that he at least confirmed those times when he pulled her aside to talk to her. He made certain that he wrote down in detail what they talked about so hopefully she could understand later on when she is older. He also jotted down everything in through detail for himself to remember, and he had to resort to notes from one of his previous talks to explain something to her as well. I believe it was before she turned 10 years old. I was definitely looking into this in more detail simply because I was bored and had absolutely nothing else to do.
It just goes to show, it can really help to have a new perspective on a franchise. Pokemon Colosseum is one of my favorite Pokemon games of all time, and I doubt it would have been anything like that if Game Freak or anyone else familiar with Pokemon made it. Seeing the main character BLOW UP A BUILDING (with people potentially still inside) had my jaw hanging the first time I played it. I'd love to see a similar take on Pokemon nowadays, but unfortunately Game Freak is pretty dead set on maintaining Pokemon's "image," whatever that is.
Honestly if you guys want good graphics/texture go outside cuz that’s not what Pokémon is about Pokémon is about whimsy and wonder and sense of adventure and the cast of unique and colorful characters and the friends you make along the way The Pokémon themselves are what make the games so good not graphics I mean graphics wasn’t what got us into the franchise in the first place was it It was the charm of the creatures and being able to play with friends and make new friends that has always been the charm of Pokémon from the beginning to now and forever Pokémon is completely inspired and unlike any other game that exists it’s extremely one of a kind and unique No one can replicate it and be successful at it despite many attempts
imo, it's "cute". It's funny how they got complaints of "too babyish", sought to change it, only for them to slowly go back to that over time. The marketing team won in the end.
@@madnessarcade7447 I don't disagree but the original comment never once mentioned graphics. Your entire reply was seemingly only about graphics, and you kept going on about it. And on. And on. And on. And on. It's replies like this that make the fanbase look childish.
It's kinda cool knowing that Colosseum was made by a bunch of Dragon Quest Devs since that was the franchise that partly inspired Satoshi & GameFreak to create Pokémon in the first place.
Most of the Kanto and Johto 'Mons had their animations ripped from the Stadium games; it's only the Hoenn ones that had new animations. ...and yet even then they're STILL better than some of the 3DS animations.
Creatures Inc. created and animated all of the Pokemon models used in Stadium/2/Colo/XD. Genius Sonority created all the other models, like environments or trainers.
I mean to be fair they just reused the gen 1 and gen 2 models from the Pokémon Stadium games, they only created the gen 3 models. Those looked really good as well though. It really shows how much potential Genius Sonority had. The mainline games would be so much better if they took over development. I know it'll never happen but I can dream.
I feel shadow pokemon and the region of orre still have such untapped potential. I mean imagine getting one of your core party members stolen and turned shadow, and you have to battle it later in the game. That would give me way more motivation to keep going than winning another league. And story elements like illegal pokemon smuggling and experimenting. Not to mention our main character being more morally grey and butting heads with other characters over their beliefs. It's not that I need pokemon to be "dark" but these are themes I think would suit the franchise perfectly.
well this feals like a idea thats good in concept but bad in exection imagine griding for hours just so some guy steals that pokemon not saying that that woud hapen 100% of the time but in a sytuation like that it woud be so frustrating
Having your starter pokemon stolen from you halfway through the game and turned shadow sounds brutal, but also something I'd 100% be in for, it would give you a sense of urgency or a drive to get them back no matter what. It saddens me to know that Colosseum and XD were just completely swept under the rug by Game Freak and forgotten about.
Damn, got a little teary eyed at the end there hearing the piano arrangement. I wish the main games would at least acknowledge the existence of Colosseum and XD, like as an easter egg or something. Heck, just having a certain goofball wanderer show up in any main series game would be amazing.
Pokémon: refuses to even acknowledge the Orré Saga despite it's ever growing cult following popularity over the years for just how different and difficult it was. Quite possibly the most ambitious Pokémon Fangame and actual game crossover in history with Project Azurite: Fine, I'll do it myself. Pokémon Orré Saga, main series 3rd, 5th, 6th Gen, and Insurgenc Characters and relations to past events and Characters and lore that fit in flawlessly to the build up in story of the Crystalization Crises of the Kuria Region. Boom, what else ya got?
I think part of it has to do with it being someone else’s creation without any of their approval. I doubt there’s any sort of bad blood or grudges held, but I figure they looked at it after it was made and thought “Wait…no, this is all wrong. This isn’t something I’d consider to be a Pokémon title.” I genuinely loved Gale of Darkness (haven’t experienced Colosseum), but I’m thinking about the perspective of the devs and how they view the work from someone that did what they wanted with “their baby.” There are similar stories in other industries where Buzz Lightyear was poached by Disney from Pixar to make a 2D animated series and the guys at Pixar were NOT happy about it to say the least. They wouldn’t even remotely acknowledge it as an official expansion to Buzz’s lore until decades later, and it’s relevancy died out until Buzz got a stand-alone movie made by Pixar themselves.
@@UndertakerU2ber I'm still waiting for Disney+ to release the buzz light-year of star command series someday 😢😢😢 There are only low quality vhs recording left of this series
The Gen 3 and Orre era of Pokemon is one my top favorite things. Incredibly appreciative of any new content or information related to it. Thanks you guys!
I kind of liked not seeing older Pokémon for a while when I play through the third gen for the first time, It was refreshing to use new Pokémon at the time.
They have already publically stated that for Sword and Shield that they made up their mind on which pokemon would be included inside of the pokedex for the games. Honestly I do not notice that they are not included inside of the games. Deoxys does not even need to be in the game in the first place, either. Celebi does not seem to get a lot of attention from even not very active pokemon players either, it was just included just in case someone might want to it later on more than likely. There is a legal way to get Celebi added in your Pokemon games completely legally outside of using a distrobution ROM or the Japanese Collosuem Bonus Disc. I do not have the complete pokedex in my game, though.
The only Pokémon I can imagine the horn this is about is Absol who can learn Megahorn by TM or breeding. Which is super weird because surely the horn is one of the most striking things about Absol and fits the yin/yang thing going on with its face. The horn feels like one of Absol's most integral parts. Like you said though, no other Gen III Pokémon learns any horn-moves so it has to be Absol.
Absol is also one of the very few pokemon whose name is the same in all regions. It seems like it was planned to be pitched as the new mascot mon, like pikachu and (to a lesser extent at the time) eevee. I bet there were lots of design ideas thrown around for that little guy...
@@Starfloofle It should have been the Lucario of gen III all things considered, I remember seeing it debut in the Jirachi wish maker movie and I was instantly infatuated with the creature and its design.
@@sasaki999pro Lucario is the same way, yep. Absol really got the short end of the stick as far as this sort of pokemon goes I feel... I dunno why, it just did, despite being prominent in titles and movies. I know absol is popular, but it's never felt *explosively* popular like similar mons.
Yeah, I always thought it was pronounced "lihn-OON," I had no idea it was supposed to be "LAI-noon." It's definitely not spelled properly to get the right idea across.
Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness are my favorite Pokémon games ever, and yet, Gamefreak treats these games similarly to Bethesda with Fallout New Vegas. They both don't want to acknowledge nor admit that someone else they hired made a better game with their franchise than they would ever have with twice the time and budget. These games offer such a unique and adventurous take on the concept of Pokémon that it's injust that it doesn't get to be more fully explored. I don't mean to undermine Gamefreak from what they've accomplished, but I am holding them accountable for what they've held back. Especially Tsukasa Tawada. You have an entire symphony just begging to be heard again properly.
Such an adventurous game being left to only explore towns and hideouts. Pokémon colosseum and XD were never that good. They're just not. And yeah so? the music is good, but Pokémon music has always been good and it has covered different styles, and game freak has made amazing remixes like ORAS and HGSS and rainbow rocket, they even possibly inspired twenty one guns.
@@rpgfanatic9719 I've played again this year colosseum, and I disagree. Pokemon now a days is formulaic. You get a route mostly lineal (maybe with one detour to get an item, probably a potion or pokeball), then you get a town with a few buildings, and only two of them with something interesting (besides the pokemon center). Maybe the game's team appear to cause some trouble, you kick their sorry arses because its what the player does, no matter if the team is composed or evil gangsters, extremists or just noisy fans, and continue with the next route... which is the same as the earlier one, but with a different decoration. Rinse and repeat. Then almost at the end of the game, you save the world, beat the Champion (who may or may not have been involved in the story, and, to a degree, kudos to Sword and Shield for having a competent champion that almost made the player redundant), and the post game... which may be the most interesting part of the game. And by the way, you know the format Pokemon Company uses for their official tournaments, double battles? Well, you will be lucky if you found 10 double battles in the game. Maybe ONE gym leader will be a doubles. Colosseum was different from the very beggining. Instead of a new trainer, you are a veteran one with two eeveelutions at almost level 30 with a moveset focused on colaboration between them, not just brute force as you would in the adventure. You don't casually find the game's team causing problems, you MAKE problems for the game's team by stealing their pokemon stealing gizmo and blowing up their base, and then proceeds to make problems for the OTHER team by rescueing the one character that can help dismantle their plans, who, by the way, acompanies you through the rest of the game. Also, the game is all about double battles, which teaches you the power and importance of moves like reflect or helping hand. The towns are alive, and most characters' lives aren't hyper focused on pokemon, or being tutorials for the player. In a few words, the game respects the player's intelligence, not only by not hand holding them so much, but also by creating a believable world where not every NPC is obsesed with pokemon or with telling what you can do with the pokemon or the game. The limited rooster of pokemon also forced the players to be more strategic. The first time I beat the game, by example, I didn't use meditite/medicham at all, because I didn't know what their ability really does, and their stats looks lackluster. But if you know that it doubles it's attack stat, you suddenly gets a crystal cannon that, properly trained, can oneshot almost any pokemon that doesn't resist it's attacks. You can bet I used it through most of the game in this second run. I also choose Quilava as the Johto started I rescued first, because Bayleaf is... well, Bayleaf, and while Croconaw is probably the most powerful of the three, there are good water mons at the beggining (like Quagsire), while there aren't any good fire mons until Entei besides Quilava.
Knew nothing about Pokemon, yet ended up being better than actual Pokemon mainline games lol. Now that's really amazing, and kinda painful for Gamefreak at the same time (they're my favorite Pkmn games as well)
The GameCube spinoffs were very special games. They felt like a completely natural place for the series to go, remixing the gameplay and upping the difficulty. I firmly believe that we need a game in this style to get the series out of the slump it's currently in.
yeah, heck they could just release it as a sideline series if they want and im sure it would do well, bringing more... ugh i hate this word but cant think of annother "mature" themes into a pokemon series could be a breath of fresh air. could also allow the villans to be a bit less cartoony like the shadow pokemon stuff... heck that could even be brought back and improved on, just cus an org fell dont mean all their research goes poof. heck that could be a neat plot or even sub plot that all those former evil team mebers banded together outa nessisty because they couldnt go legit because of their past connections. would also explain why their tactics are so versitile...and pragmatic, heck could be a theme of where you gotta best them without using mons as they learned from their prior orgs mistakes and do their best to avoid a mon battle and when they are forced into one they cheat to the best of their ability some being simply unfair fights like all of their mons out at once to outside situations making the fight unfair like a hostage you didnt rescue or a modifyer to the fight... or allys randomly jumping in midfight. of course if they "cheat" the player should be able to do so right back at them example if they order their mon to attack the player the player should be able to order their mon to do the same to them.
I heartilly agree. The mainline feels so... maybe "tame" is the word I want, but "safe" feels better. The GC games felt different and vital in a way the main ones don't.
This felt so bittersweet. These games were so ambitious and interesting, and were among the games that I sunk SO much time in. I really miss the Orre region and hoped so badly we would revisit in... any capacity. To be honest I lived in Arizona all of my life and never knew it was based on here omg;;; I imagined the mittens rock was a common formation haha. Because of the low-fantasy feel with the aesthetic given to it, being in Orre just felt like Cowboy Bebop to me. With this knowledge, it feels so sweet. Knowing that the composer still has a soft spot for Orre too feels so special. If he ever releases his arrangements on vinyl, I would treasure having some of the soundtrack like that.
Man, I am almost 30 years old and have lived in Phoenix this whole damn time and I learned the origin and name of my home town from a goddamn Pokemon video. Nice.
I feel like it's something our teachers mentioned once, but we just didn't get enough time with it because of the state's sordid past with the Apache and Navajo people (among other tribes). I recently left for Pennsylvania but my heart will always be in the desert where I wad born.
This makes me appreciate these games so much more. Both R/S/E and Colosseum and Gale were childhood favorites. Hearing how the games came to be, brightened my day.
As a 16 year old Pokemon fangirl living in Phoenix, yeah I'd say these games really resonated with me back in the day. Me and my bff Kyri would stay up having sleepovers and playing Colosseum and trading on Emerald and watching Jirachi wishmaker and things like that and even playing our older games as well and we would even go on to cosplay as Pokemon trainers like Wes and Rui for fun. Also, her name being Kyri, even if the spelling was different, always made me feel like whenever I played Emerald she was with me. Of course I didn't know the backstory behind the NPC Kiri back then, it just was cool to me because it reminded me of my best friend and it felt like we were together even when we were apart. Good times. We've grown apart since then but I still think of her and wish her well. Kyri if you ever see this I hope you and your sons are having a great life and thanks for the good memories! ❤️
Ok that's kinda retroactively heartwarming that Blaziken was supposed to be unlikeable but ended up being so much the most popular starter that it was the first one to get a mega evolution and practically the mascot of the entire mega evolution mechanic! I'm glad this representation of families abandoning pet chickens ended up being a very non-abandoned Pokémon!
I’m still holding my breath to where they need to add Blaziken into Super Smash Brothers as a clone fighter of Captain Falcon. Would have been a perfect fit and a nod to Gen 3 which has been overlooked in that series.
Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness is no lie, my absolute favorite Pokemon game. The Coliseum duology feels like if Pokemon took Digimon's approach to try appealing to older fans and I'm glad to see that confirmed here. I do want more games for sure, but sometimes the best thing for a series is to remain a legend. My sincere advice to all here is to maintain a way to play these games and pass them down to the next generation, I managed to play through them with my nephew and it was a blast.
Check out pokemon XG: Next gen. If you have beat gale of darkness this is a revamped version. Lots of new wild pokemon, shadow pokemon, stuff like that. A refreshing way to re experience the game
"I hadn't played any Pokemon games before making this Pokemon Game" That kind of explains why Colosseum and XD are fresh, cool, innovative and the best thing with the Pokemon trademark on it to ever be created.
Eh the best is debatable pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky and pokemon conquest exist and pokepark is another good one but I will agree it is a great couple of games
@D I think it's difficult to compare these two - but compared to the main games, Dx and Colosseum definitely offer something really refreshing to the ever same concept
@@R-SXX I'm not fully disagreeing with you, but each of the mainline titles do offer some slightly new stuff. And there are a lot of people, me included btw, that still really enjoy them. But that doesn't mean I still don't appreciate what these games did for us as kids.
I recently replayed Colosseum for the first time since release, and it does not hold up. The game is very slow and tedious. I love the music and presentation, and the themes, but the game isn't that fun compared to any main series game.
So in other words, if it weren't for Gen 3 originally being a reboot, it's likely we wouldn't have the traditions of each gen having a Pikachu-clone, regional bird, and regional bug as they simply would've been filled by their Gen 1 counterparts each game. That's an interesting thing to think about; imagine Gen 4 without Staraptor, or Gen 5 without Scolipede. Also, Colosseum and XD's devs not knowing Pokemon kinda explains why it was more like a traditional RPG. Would be really cool to see GF do that again, even if it turns out bad, if only to see a unique and fresh take from people outside the community. Sad to see they don't really have plans for Orre though.
The funny thing about regional birds is that Pidgy was sort of the odd one out during the first three generations. Taillow and Hoothoot we're both two stage lines, which would almost make one think Spearow would be the Kanto regional bird, if it weren't for Pidgy being the one found on the first route. It wasn't until Starly in Sinnoh that a regional bird was three stages again, and not until Fletchling in Kallos that three stage early game birds unquestionably outnumbered the two stage lines.
It’s probably the rarity that makes me enjoy Coliseum more. If all Pokemon games were like that, Pokemon wouldn’t stand out quite as much. Definitely think it’s been long enough to give it another go though. 1 more gritty Pokemon please, then give it some time to cool off again.
That Hoenn new:old Pokémon ratio is pretty much perfect. It makes the region feel fresh but still familiar. Sinnoh and Unova both felt similar, which is why Gen 3-5 are usually regarded as Pokémon’s true golden age. God I miss those charming chibi pixel graphics.
Oh for sure. Gen 5 sprites with the battle/regular character animations are the best in the series. So much more life than the static 3D models, despite them looking more true to form and to the anime.
Unova tipped too far past that balance, though, and just gave up on it, which was a huge mistake. If you're like me and don't like most of the Unovan designs you can't really appreciate those games because you're stuck with a ton of Pokemon you probably don't want to use. Had they implemented more older Pokemon into the mid-to-late-game areas, I think it would have gone a long way towards making them more palatable. No matter how much people talk about how Gen 5 were the greatest Pokemon games, I can't help but roll my eyes. It's not that I don't understand why people like them. I just don't think it was enough because for all of the Pokemon added, more than any other generation (even Gen 1 just barely came close with 151), I can't stand building a team in it because the style doesn't fit my personal preference.
@@Lucifronz I agree with you there. I also don’t really care for most of Gen 5’s pokemon designs. I do enjoy the games though. Best story out of the entire franchise.
if by "new to old ratio" you mean the wild, then I ask if you've even toucxhed a Gen 4 or 5 game before - there's VERY FEW non-sinnohan spawns in the Sinnoh Games without slot 2, and the Unova games have *NONE AT ALL* of old gen spawns (one of the many reasons gen 5 is terrible and people need to stop pretending like it was even remotely decent)
Gen 4 was kind of lame though. Playing Sinnoh again with Brilliant Diamond just reinforced how lacking it was. Gen 5 did so much better. I mean, don't get me wrong, Sinnoh had great Pokémon, but the region and most of the designs just weren't very exciting.
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness was the first Pokémon game I got to experience as a kid before I got Pearl on my DS… hearing them treat the series like it doesn’t exist kinda breaks my heart since it means so much to me. I’m really happy the devs like James Turner (he designed Shadow Lugia) and Tsukasa Tawada still draw fanart of the games and play the music from it. Also Tawada-san puts little leitmotifs from Orre in his other songs like in Pokémon Revolution and Cafe Mix. He also interacts with people who are fans of the Orre series… Those are little things that I appreciate about him! I hope we can see another Orre game but I also will set my expectations super low to avoid getting disappointed, especially after what Masuda said lol
We need Genious Sorority to make another shadow pokemon game. The fact that they chose to make a darker game for an older audience made colosseum truly unique and memorable. Not to mention the difficulty too, don't know why Nintendo never let them make more of these.
Well, they're going to need to revitalize their series soon. Lots of new monster collector games are inbound and drawing away fans. And the Digimon series just released Digimon Survive, where calling it dark is an extreme understatement. hell, even the anime has gone down that route with ghost Game and Digimon being far from shy of eviserating people grusomely (multiple instances of dismemberment, instant cremation and one poor sap getting his flesh dissolved and skull crunched). Pokemon just seems stagnant and refusing to adapt. Hell, relying on their youthe isn't goign to cut it anymore in some areas. In japan, Yokai Watch has basically surplanted them for children. And a lot of the new mon collectors and older series are appealing to the older fans. Let's remember that the Legend game that came out recently was something very different and was a far more exciting release than the D/P remakes (which feel as if people quickly dropped them way too fast). At this point we're just craving something different from the same tired formula. It's fine if they want to continue the progression of the main series with the same formula. but I think another game like the two from the GCn days are needed again. Heck, and with the current age of fans lately, make the game rated T. Rather than my opponent sending me to the last healing center, make it evident that the Scizor that just swept my team proceeded to use their claws on my neck and load from a last save. Or that losing a major battle resulted in things going horribly wrong in the proceeding non-standard game over.
I don't think it's that they weren't permitted to make more, but rather than the original team no longer exists. Following XD and Battle Revolution, the main developers of Colosseum and XD either joined GameFreak or joined different game studios. The studio isn't even remotely the same anymore, and hasn't been for a long time.
Colosseum's design is done really well. It is a challenge of a game where both you and even basic trainers have to make use of seldom used Pokemon with great potential.
Definitely, removing wild Pokemon made it interesting, being limited to using the Shadow Pokemon you catch, I know i never would've used Hariyama if it wasn't for Colosseum.
@@webbedshadow2601 I just keep on getting pissed off that you can't catch all the shadow Pokémon because of how you have to play one was always unattainable
It's funny that I had completely given up on Pokemon at that time and it was Colosseum that send me back into that rabit hole for quite some time. The way they approached the design was pretty logical, but you would not see that nowadays. Too bad Games Freaks is just allergic to innovation. >>
Masuda saying, "No," and then LAUGHING when asked if they'd ever make another Colosseum style game let a very angry "Fuck You, Masuda" out from deep within me. 😆
@@ToneyCrimson I mean, I'm still excited for S/V in all honesty. But the Colosseum series needs a other addition; Its concept was great, and they can build onto Orre so much if needed. I loved a game focused on Double Battles. I feel Doubles are so much more interesting.
I like that it's a choice for Slaking. Slakoth can't help it, it gets energetic the moment it can. Slaking made a choice. Why is Slaking almost unusable? Because it doesn't care.
I own Pokemon Colosseum. I liked the original game, but Colosseum brought me in with it's more adult and mature theme. I loved the story and the way to capture Shadow Pokemon, how you needed to work on bonding with them to break the shadow hold. On top of that I loved the music and the feel in general. Plus the difficulty factor was amped up making you rely on asist moves to fight double battles. You really had to strategize in those battles. The experience was great and it's why I considered the GameCube games my favorite of the series. So for that simple response of saying 'no' then laughing about it when asking if there's a chance of going down that path seems like a kick to the face of the fanbase who enjoyed it. Genius Sorority took an IP and got creative that was fun and enjoyable instead of trying to make a cash grab out of it. I would've loved to have seen more of that.
I very much like the ratio of new to old Pokémon in Hoenn. I feel most Pokémon you meet should be new with a few old ones for variety and type balances. I enjoy discovering new mons in new games and coming across a bunch of old ones can get boring after a while
@@rpgfanatic9719 They also had a bunch of nice additions to the base game, but changed some things to make it different. That said, I'm not okay with the random creepy dude during the challenge on the small island
@@rpgfanatic9719 i think XD and RSE will always be tied as my favorite pokemon games. I played Moon and while it was fun i know I can't sit through a cutscene every 5 steps again when advancing the plot. If ultrasun & ultramoon are anywhere near the cutscene frequency of moon i know I can't play through them, no pokemon game has a story that good, and most of the cutscenes were tutorially anyway. (Fans have been asking for ages to have a setting to skip the catching tutorial, let alone the rest of the tutorials. Old games used to just give you an HM and say nothing, if you were lucky you found the sign post 5 routes over saying cut clears long grass in gen 3 & 4)
@@jasonreed7522 There's 1 short cutscene per new main area and I may even be exaggerating and only few beginning ones are tutorials. They're really not oppressive as people make them out to be, they're short. These games don't even have HMs and this is actually the one story in the series that's actually well done.
I wanna say that I heard somewhere (probably from this channel) that Masuda thinks the only reason people wanted Stadium and Colosseum were because they wanted to see Pokemon in 3d, which is why they don't plan on ever making any more games like them. I feel that's missing the point. Stadium, Stadium 2, and Battle Revolution could be seen as a second endgame for their generations, as they were entirely battles with different rules and required strategy to beat. If they were to bring back the Battle Frontier without actually having it in the main-line games, that would be the perfect way. As for why they don't get re-releases, I think it's because the models and battle animations would make people realize the current games are severely lacking. All the Stadium games have gorgeous models who's battle animations make them seem alive and dynamic camera angles that amplify that feeling. Compared to main-line's animations where the models look static more than half the time, the quality just doesn't compare.
@@jellojiggler1693 If you're talking about the 3D thing, there was an interview where Masuda said something to that effect, though I don't remember the exact quote. Another big issue is that most of the side games weren't made by Game Freak. Stadiums 1 and 2 and Snap were made by HAL while Colosseum, XD, and Battle Revolution were made by Genius Sonority. This leads me to believe there could be some drama between Masuda and some other branches of Nintendo. Or that he doesn't have a say if they get rereleased since it'd be papa Nintendo that would decide.
@@Dw7freak I was talking about when the original commenter said: "As for why they don't get re-releases, I think it's because the models and battle animations would make people realize the current games are severely lacking." I debunked it with pokken and snap. I don't think there's any jealousy or drama lol. You're looking into it way too much. And as I understand Nintendo and pokemon company have the final say on what gets published, and gf are mainly just game developers. (I think that most devs work with publishing companies but I could be wrong?) It's been that way for a long time now.
@@Dw7freak They wouldn't be able to pull off something like Colosseum or Revolution because Gamefreak is still as technically incompetent as they were when Iwata had to save Gen 2 from memory issues, and they lack creative vision. Unfortunately Pokemon games are some of the lowest quality first party Nintendo games, and it's not changing any time soon.
I live in Arizona and can shed some light on Orre. The reason Pyrite Town’s colosseum was meant to be a huge globe was almost certainly a reference to the old mining town of Globe to the east of Phoenix, where the mining boom started when someone found a near-perfect sphere of ore in a nearby stream. Additionally, Mt. Battle is a good match location wise for the San Francisco Peaks, the highest point in the state, which originally made up the sides of an enormous volcano before the central crater collapsed.
It's interesting that the ones behind Colosseum were not only strangers to Pokemon, but some had experience with other rpgs. Because of that, we got some of the coolest tone-breaking storytelling in the series and people still talk about Colosseum and Gale of Darkness this day (especially the idea of shadow Pokemon). The fresh perspective was a brilliant move that Pokemon Company never really tried to capitalize on since Gale of Darkness. The closest things to edgy storytelling we have gotten since then were Gen 5, 7, and Legends, which were all pretty light with a few darker moments here and there. It's kinda sad that that is how far they are willing to go for now, but at least other Pokemon-inspired monster collector games are willing to take things further.
@@jellojiggler1693 Yo-Kai Watch, Spectrobes, uhhh there was this one dinosaur game that I forgot the name of, and Temtem are the few I can name off the top of my head.
I also feel like a bit of an idiot considering that a lot of the stuff they revealed in this video didn't register with me. Like zigzagoon's going from zig-zags to straight lines as it evolves, or Slakoth's evolution forms representing laziness, motivation, and deciding it wasn't worth it.
R/S always had this special reboot-feeling because it changed so many things that where persistent from gen1 to 2(running, surfing faster than walking, being able to walk behind buildings and get invisible to the "camera" because the roof is blocking the view, and also it was the first huge graphical update for the maingames.
Blaziken is my boi... I've kept my original one on my team since I was 7. I've used every catch-up mechanic ever added throughout the generations to make him a MONSTER. He has the best possible speed, the best possible attack - he started with the Adamant nature (a blessing I didn't know I'd been given until years later). I used super training in gen 6 to get him up to speed, hyper training to make his IVs perfect in gen 7, and gen 8 to give him Speed Boost, Flare Blitz, and Close Combat - and to top it all off, I was able to give him a nickname in gen 8, something I neglected to do with any pokemon until i became an adult. I named him Kindle. ;-;
It's always nice to hear that people have that special pokemon they've kept with them for so long. For me it's my Gardevoir that I caught in the gen 4 games. Story starts with me for whatever reason thinking that the only way to obtain a Gardevoir in gen 3 wad to trade. Fast forward to gen 4 I caught a Kirlia while trying to find a Ralts. Eventually gave up on the Ralts and caught the next Kirlia I saw. I've transferred her to gen 5, then 6, Super Trained her, and then to 7 and got a gold bottlecap to hyper train. I still have her now, but I keep her, along with other ones that mean a lot to me in pokemon home, but put them in game when I can
I don't think Masuda knows just how much people truly care about the early home console Pokemon games. Stadium 1/2, Colosseum/XD, and Revolution were all completely fantastic games and are remembered fondly for the content that they provided. Granted that their existence was just an excuse for 3D pokemon battles - they all gave players new ways to play (Mini-games, Story mode, unlockable and gift pokemon, etc.). My brother and I used to beat the Champion in Stadium 1 constantly because of the Free gift pokemon you could obtain every time (I remember freaking out when I got a Hitmonchan or Charmander!). I just wish Masuda would acknowledge these games again, even if they just want to do a simple port to switch, its a dirty shame that these games will probably rot in Game Freak's vault for the foreseeable future.
@@Nephenon Fair point, but it also allowed you to get various gift pokemon such as Surfing pikachu and Rare berries sent to your Gen 4 games. It was still fun in its own right, even if it was just a literal battle frontier turned into it's own game.
I wish Nintendo would bring GameCube games to the Switch, I have Colosseum but not XD Gale of Darkness, and it's $150 on ebay...first I wish Nintendo would put Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 on the N64 online service! It would be worth paying $50 to play them alone..
I don’t know why but Gen 3 is the most nostalgic for me. I spent countless months playing this with my cousin and it was one of the best moments of my life. I’ll never forget how wonderful those memories were.
@@29blazehead yep colosseum will always be the best 3D Pokémon game to me, the story telling and music is unmatched compared to the later games. Everything Pokémon did back then had a lot of heart put into it despite its software limitations, I think that’s what’s really missing in Pokémon now.
2:35 it's a shame they don't do this anymore, I've always thougth it was great seeing new mons over past ones and how regional dex should be half or 1/3 of new mons per generation.
This might be the most interesting DYKG for a Pokemon generation yet. At least for me lol. It's sad there's so much content that didn't make it into the final games or outside Japan. Though the biggest pity is there won't be another game like Colosseum again. Most likely at least. They once said they won't make a new Snap, so I keep my hopes up.
Its funny, because Colosseum, in retrospect, is one of the best Pokemon games, at least to me. A really cool twist on the series that I only appreciate now that the formula has gotten so stale.
I'd love for another Pokémon game to have Orre's feel, I've been designing Fakémon and Characters for a Texas inspired region that hopefully would have a similar vibe.
This is very interesting. I had previously thought RSE reusing design themes like Wurmple and Tailow was just them playing it safe. Knowing that instead it was just them going for a soft reboot and choosing to prioritize artistic and creative freedom gives me more respect for Hoenn. Gotta love how Pokemon Colosseum only reinforces Pokemon's connections to Dragon Quest games and and is arguably yet another example of how Pokemon games become so much better in instances where they may as well be Dragon Quest games like Mystery Dungeon. Even more ironic how Colosseum was intentionally designed to appeal to and respect older, aged up fans in their teens, griwing up with the audience in a more mature way. No wonder this game is so well respected and remembered.
In my opinion, Matsuda and the Pokémon Company are being very shortsighted in discounting Colosseum and XD style games. I fully maintain that the only reason they didn't sell was that they were ahead of their time. Were the two remade/remastered today, in a market craving something new and mature from Pokémon, I have little doubt they'd sell like hotcakes. Hopefully the successful experiment that was PL:A has inspired the company to take risks.
Pokémon colosseum has the best Pokémon soundtrack by a country mile. I'm sure most people have seen it, but Dr.Pez's arrangement of it absolutely whips ass, so much as that the composer actually commented on his video and congratulated him
Colosseum and XD both have some phenomenal pieces. I'll say that the Colosseum originals are generally my favorites, but I do love me some XD Miror B theme too
An outsider's take on a franchise is often a big gamble; if they fail to capture the essence of the series it'll tank hard, but if they keep enough of that core present and balance it right with their unique perspective it can make some magic happen.
@@rpgfanatic9719 It is objetively better than X and Y, Sword and Shield and the remakes of Hoenn and Shinoh. If only because it respects the intelligence of the player (not only for that, but that is reason enough). I'd mention Sun and Moon's half finished mess, but because I haven't played them, I'll skip them. What's fair is fair, they tried to make them a bit different. Sword and Shield's plot was specially stupid and with very few stakes until the end, with a Champion that made the player uninvolved with the plot and redundant until the very end, and a "problem" that was just a problem because Rose is an idiot without enough patience to wait a single day. If he had waited, Lionel, the player as the new champion and several other gym leaders and powerful trainers would had been at his disposal to help make sure Eternatus can be contained if needed. And if he had explained himself properly, the cities of Galar would had been ready for the "crisis" and any problem would had been resolved before it became one and he would have avoided jail at the end of the story. The only part of the plot that was good was Hop's developement, because they finally found a good balance between having a friendly rival, but one you don't mind crushing because of his arrogance, and one that actually develops from being beaten to the ground time and time again. ORAS's plot is just as stupid as it was in the originals, with a team of morons trying to destroy the balance of the world by not understanding that both land and water are needed, and a team that weren't as stupid and could actually understand that destroying said balance may be bad for the pokemon they want to protect (at least Emerald made both teams moronic, and you have to face both), and both Kalos and Shinoh have a team of idiots that think it is a REALLY good idea to just destroy the world (at least Magma and Aqua just missed the part where destroying the balance is bad, the leaders of Flare and Galaxy outright wanted to destroy everything). On the other hand, the Rockets, the Snaggem/Cypher and the Plasmas were trying to control the world/make a lot of money, and of those three, the Team Plasma was composed by a mix of naive idiots that believed the lies of their cult leader, and criminals that knew what they were doing and followed said cult leader knowing full well what they were doing.
@@lenlimbo respects your intelligence by giving you monsters with complete sets and not letting you actually think for yourself compared to other Pokémon games? Fsss, sun and moon is more than a bit different. Turning badges into held items, gyms into dungeon biomes, getting rid of HMs for rides. I don't care about SS, but I will say the ORAS villains weren't trying to completely drown and dry the world, just expand on them by a percentage, you realize this when these monsters are predicted to go too far for them. Never liked BW's story either. BW is an overrated entry, but not so much overrated than colosseum which offers 0 gameplay variety and little exploration. The fuck are you even going on about story for anyway? Are you seriously trying to say this game is a good story? No it's not. Even vanilla SM has a better plot even if Lusamine is a moron, she at least has a goal, team snagem doesn't even have one, what do they accomplish by locking out movesets from Pokemon and turning all of them into suiciding recoil sweepers even ones that don't fit the role? They can't even level up.
beryls wouldve been a good choice for three gem-themed names. they naturally occur in different colors depending on inclusions with each having a different name. green beryl being emerald, blue being aquamarine and red being bixbite. but i suppose "pokemon aquamarine and bixbite" doesnt have as much of a ring to it as "ruby and sapphire" does.
I loved Colosseum as a kid (and I still love it) so learning about how it came to be was so cool. It's kind of surprising that no one working on the game knew anything about pokemon, but maybe that's why they were able to come up with something so different and honestly refreshing
I don't know. I always felt Collesium wasn't really a good Pokemon game as it didn't play to the series strengths. Like yeah, it was cool that it was darker and more difficult but it didn't do that in a great way. Like in Collesium, you can only obtain Pokemon by taking them from others as Shadow Pokemon which significantly cut down on making varied teams since you could only obtain specific Pokemon in a very specific order. And since Shadow Pokemon only used Shadow Rush and there was no Wild Battles, it made progression really tedious. Even the darker tone doesn't really do much as it's only really used for set dressing rather than impacting the story. Really, I feel that the mainline Pokemon games, if they had a challenge mode like B2W2 did, would do everything that Collesium was going for but better.
its not always bad to bring people with a fresh outlook, the only reason it tends to fail so much is cus the teams just dont care which wasnt the case with colosseum
@@FraserSouris In other words you disliked many of the things that other people found refreshing. You can feel what you want, but I can say with certainty that your vision of a game that "would do everything that Colosseum was going for but better" would most definitely not scratch the itch for me and many others.
@@IBeforeAExceptAfterK I see where you're coming from and even agree with many of your points. But I don't think my points are unreasonable. For one, something being refreshing can still be done in a lacklustre or interesting way. The novelty of it being different doesn't override that. As an example from other franchises, Call of Duty went Futuristic between 2014-2017. Even though it was a refreshing change of pace from the traditional "boots on the ground" COD games, much of the playerbase disliked it so much that WW2 and MW2019 sold crazy well as a "return to form". Recently, Assassin's Creed Mirage is said to be going back to an older style of AC because even though the RPG ACs were "refreshing" in a sense, many people felt they didn't reflect the actual appeal of AC. Basically "change for the sake of change" isn't inherently a good thing. Collesium doing different things doesn't excuse how it does some of those things quite poorly. Like, one of the main appeals of a Pokemon game is the surprinsgly deep RPG mechanics and teambuilding options you have. It's one of the reasons why hardcore Nuzelockes are so popular. Hardcore Nuzelockes put a lot more self imposed restrictions, but these are still fun because they make you use more creative and unconventional strategies. The difficulty and restrictions here facilitate that. But in Collesium, the opposite happens. Because XP and money is so stingy, and you have so few resources, the game loses its varied and deep RPG mechanics. Spamming Shadow Rush over and over again from the only 2 decently levelled Mons you have because that's the only ok option you have is quite boring. You don't really get to outthink or outplay your opponents. You either grind or use basic options. Speaking of which, unlike the main series games, grinding is a lot more common in Collesium. You have to spend a lot of your time grinding, either to get what few scraps of XP and money there are, or to purify your Shadow Mons which takes a really long time. And these don't really encourage any creative solutions. Like, there aren't as many challenge runs of Collesium for a reason, the game's design discourages varied playthroughs. Like, there are difficult Rom Hacks like Incelement Emerald and Radical Red that enforce level caps and give you few encounters at first. But they still give you resources to implement your own creative solutions to problems, and they don't require absurd grinding. Plus, the story of Collesium, like I said, even if it's darker in tone, it only uses that for set dressing. There is no real influence on the darker tone on the characters or how the story progresses. You can get the same impact by reading Pokedex entries in the main games. Not to mention that even thematically, the game's use of Shadow Pokemon kinda conflicts with its gameplay. The story wants Shadow Pokemon to be something the player purifies as a way of making these Pokemon go from being corrupted to pure and true versions of themselves. It wants the player to come to learn about these Pokes as individuals and grow closer to them. But the game's mechanics do the opposite. Spamming Shadow Rush doesn't really allow you to learn more of these mons. Plus, the limited resources discourage training up and purifying many Pokemon.
@@FraserSouris Nice essay there, buddy. I can tell you feel quite strongly about this. But have you considered that your lack of enjoyment might have had something to do with your play style? Because a lot of your complaints seem to boil down to "I played in an unfun way, and to my surprise the whole game ended up not being fun". If all you did was spam Shadow Rush and grind because you couldn't be assed to do anything more complex than unga bunga your way through your problems, that's on you. I never had any of the issues you're complaining about, but then again I'm not a scrub. There's a reason this game is only doubles, and it's not so that you can spam two attacking moves every turn. For all your talk about Pokemon's surprisingly deep RPG mechanics, it sure as shit doesn't sound like you bothered to make good use of them.
I feel that for Gen 2 it wasnt that there were too many Kanto Pokemon, its that the Johto pokemon that were found were underwhelming, Larvitar and Houndour while cool were also just not available until way too late. I would say that if they were found earlier in the game along with Remoraid being found with the old rod early and other small adjustments the sentiment would have never developed
That and the issue with the awkward leveling curve were the 2 major issues I had with gen 2. They could have easily had Larvitar and Slugma in Victory Road, Sneasel in the Ice Cave like in Crystal for all versions, Houndour West of Ekruteak where all the Miltank and Tauros are, and Misdreavus and Murkrow in the Burned Tower. All of that would have given virtually every Johto pokemon a natural location to find them in Johto with Kanto having more of the Kanto pokemon.
Yeah. A good portion of Johto's pokemon are "why bother?" Once hearing they were designed to be sellable, it clicked. GF seemed to know that so they tried to hide with Kanto pokes, but alas that just made the problem worse.
@@-Cetus- Hell, Murkrow and Misdreavus could have shown up in the Ielix forest too at night. Houndour in the burned tower too, etc. So weird they never bothered to fix it.
I hope Masuda changes his mind on orre, it’s by far my personal favorite region for Pokémon and the two are some of the best in the series… a rerelease at least would be fantastic but just a straight remake or 3rd game would be a dream come true
I remember seeing all the ads with public demonstrators rallying crowds of people "WE MUST SAVE THE POKEMON!!" And ten year old me was like "HECK YEAH WE DO!!" I didnt even understand what we were saving them from, but I was hyped none the less
I absolutely wish for Colosseum and XD to get a modern rerelease. XD is a game I love a lot and I replayed it a lot when I was a kid. I think they should consider another game in the region, mostly just so we can get another mainline game that focuses entirely on double battles.
I think there should've been a spinoff or sequel. The series still acknowledges Shadow Pokemon, and assuming the sales for Colosseum and XD weren't as good as the core series, I still think the Orre games still have a good number of fans.
@@IgnitedQuils The main games don't really acknowledge the concept. And in Japanese, the Shadow Pokémon in GO do not share their Japanese name from Colosseum and XD.
I have expressed desire in having Colosseum and XD be remade for the Switch, possibly in a bundle. With the current meta, it would certainly make the game more playable, especially since the change in Gen 4, where an attack's power was determined whether it was a contact or special attack and using the Attack and Special Attack stats as a reference, and not if the type is physical or special. That changed the usability of many Pokémon in a big way. I don't know if Genius Sonority still have the chops to make an RPG that pushes the limits of the Switch, but they should be given a chance, especially after being reduced to developing Pokémon puzzle games.
Hi José, not sure if you're into emulation, but fans have already remade most of the older pokemon games with these quality of life changes. There is actually a game called Grand Colosseum that incorporates new generation improvements into the original colosseum game. You need a decent PC to run it, and if you know nothing about that scene there is a knowledge learning curve.
@@Nugs387, I have heard of some of these ROM mod games before. Right now I don't have a proper PC of my own, but it's something I might consider. I guess the only reason I would like an officially remade game compilation is the ability to pass Pokémon to the mainline games. Some Pokémon had moves and abilities only found in those games.
I was really enjoying the video talking about Ruby and Sapphire cause of how much I love the gen 3 games, but when you started talking about Colosseum, I was really excited to hear about the research you dug up. Colosseum is probably one of my favorite Pokemon games and it isn't brought up nearly enough
I swear it's like Colosseum was thought up when someone say "Ok, so what if we took Pokemon..... and made it like a cross between Fist Of The North Star and Cowboy Bebop."
It’s really one of the best concepts for Pokémon and did things no other Pokémon game has done, also the only time 12 vs 12 battles are able to be done legitimately
I’m surprised that Blaziken isn’t in the Human-Like Egg Group as well Regarding making Gen 3 be a reboot, I think that Gen 2’s problem was that many of its newer Pokemon aren’t available. Personally I had this idea for a second try at what Unova and Hoenn did where for the older fans, the only old Pokemon that’d be in the regional dex could be Pokemon that got pre-evolutions, evolutions, or regional variants
Usually evolutionary lines always have to share the exact egg groups. When they evolve, the egg groups don't change at all. For example, Incineroar, who is human like compared to its pre-evolved forms, isn't in the Human Like group. Only in Field. Maybe Torchic could've been in the Human Like group since Combusken and Blaziken have a human like body, but I can see why GF didn't let it be in it.
The reason it's not in the human-like group is because torchic doesn't have a humanoid body shape. It's the same reason Grimmsnarl is in the human-like group while Hatterene isn't, it's pre-evos are ball shaped.
Colosseum is one of my favorites because it's actually challenging! Only sub-par pokemon are available to catch for the majority of the game, you're chronically underleveled unless you really want to grind at Mt. Battle, and catching shadow pokemon (from the Cipher administration in particular) can be a massive pain in the ass.
I never got to play Colliseum or Gale of Darkness, so i truly hope they get a re-release one day even if we never get another game. And i love that the composer still clearly has some love for these games it's really nice to see.
I had Gale of Darkness as a kid on the gamecube and being a dumb kid i couldnt get very far, but i think i got about half way through the game. The battle system was the most fun i'd ever had with a pokemon game, The only thing that made me sad was that i couldn't play against other people like i could with the gameboy. It was very satisfying to play though, and I wish a sequel would be made. It is by far the best type of battle system they've ever made.
@@davidsantiago7808 I mean you could play against other people with Gale of darkness. Just need a game boy advance and a link cable, but I can see how a kid can't really figure that one out. If my dad wouldn't have taken the time to explain this to me back in the day, I wouldn't have gotten it either.
Colosseum still holds up surprisingly well. Such a unique entry to the series, along with XD: GoD. I would love to revisit the Orre region with a fresh sequel or get a full remake of the 2 games.
I'm surprised how blunt Matsuda is around not making another Pokemon Stadium/Coliseum, I wonder if it has something to do with the "more mature" approach of the games or they just ran out of ideas for those games
Well, the main appeal of the original Stadium games was that you could use your Pokemon in full 3D battles. Once the main series moved to the 3DS, it was probably seen as redundant. There wasn't much you could do with a Stadium game that you couldn't just do on 3DS. I think nowadays though, with "Dexit" in effect, there might actually be a new niche opened up for Stadium type games to be the one place where all Pokemon from across the series could be used.
@@tkayube I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t even complain about it being sold as a games-as-a-service release, much as that style is usually scummy. It’d free up the creative team to work less on supporting the bloated mechanics and gimmicks in competitive Pokémon, since they don’t have to balance releases as “the new competitive meta”. Might actually let the games start to feel unique again if they separated the PvP competitions from the adventure. I do like QoL for interacting with your Pokémon that they’ve been adding, including for breeding, but it’s clear that maintaining that and the competitive scene is too much for Game Freak to handle while still making decent games.
@@thesquishedelf1301 I have no idea what you're talking about. How are you going to make a good new campaign without working on new battle mechanics that obviously are connected to multiplayer? Are you just saying they should just simply not have a multiplayer feature or what? I doubt adding those modes are holding back development. Also the Pokémon company doesn't really make gimmicks. Their new mechanics are pretty well thought out and very in depth.
(19:14) "Make a definitive edition port for the newest console" > A normal person would think that the fact that Nintendo hasn't already done this makes it seem that they hate the Colosseum series. (20:01) Tsukasa Tawada's channel > Nice recommendation
Stunned how much that early artwork of the Orre towns look like the same desert cities in the Trigun series, with massive globe-like structures. I think in Trigun they were power plants but they were a fixture in every town.
The more I know about Colosseums dev team, the more I am amazed. I really hope they make another 2v2 only Pokemon Game. It doesnt even has to be as "rough" as Colosseum. But Masuda smashed this idea(though I appreciate his honesty on that issue).
I actually really appreciate the goldfish/painted chick reference with torchic. Goldfish are still one of the most abused animals in the pet industry today- probably one of the top 3. That, and I really like how hoenn was mostly new pokemon. Gen 3 was my favorite.
WE never threw away painted chicks that grew up, but as kids we never knew what happened to them, being an adult i now realised they get cooked somewhere along their life.
The first 7 minutes made me feel that childlike wonder.. thank you for that. I haven't felt this way about pokemon for so long and I'm not talking about nostalgia. I feel like the newer games main tactic is nostalgic feelings, but that only goes so far.
@@inkyno1 That's easy. By not making it do that in the regional variant. The Galarian forms of the legendary Kanto trio are completely different from their base forms and their names no longer make any sense because they aren't ice electric or fire anymore, but they did that anyway. Why not have a Rayquaza that only lives on a lonely frozen mountain peak? It could work.
Reshirim is described by Nintendo as the counter part of Zakrom being the Ying while Zekrom is the Yang. They explained it a lot better than I ever could. It was written up by Nintendo around the time of Pokemon Black and White information was getting out on the internet along with an explanation for the God Stone, something I did not really fully understand why at the time when I found it. They tried to clarify it with making the ruins episode of the show in a very specific way as well. Did you not watch the TV series that is based on the games?
Literally my favorite pokemon, and honestly the only Fire starter I'd still actually pick over both of its Water and Grass counterparts looking back, though Fennekin would've been the second if Delphox did more to wow me. I'm usually a member of the Water Tribe overall.
Apparently, a lot of of kids did hate it. Not because it turned from a chick into a chicken, but because it DIDN'T. Surprise surprise. Bird fans actually love birds.
Blaziken is still my favorite pokemon to date, simply because of a huge love of flashy superpower martial arts. I always imagined him doing a kamehameha type of flamethrower.
That last composer fact was nice. Colosseum and XD were my favourite GameCube games, especially XD. It's sad that we'll likely never go back to Orre, the faraway land, but it's nice it's not forgotten by everyone involved :)

This video reminds me of that update that you guys made a short while back, about the format change and how it would lead to larger scale projects... and in my view it worked out beautifully for you. I'll be the first to admit that I was a very big critic on DYKG's format for a few years to the point where I didn't expect to learn as much from new videos, but I think this is one of several indicators that y'all have turned the ship around and hit your stride big time. For someone who's been following Pokemon extensively for as long as I have, including trying to piece together information on development, I don't think I have *ever* found a video with this much knowledge I didn't know before watching it, especially not about my childhood generation. That's a pretty massive feat for anyone, and I tip my hat. I've had a lot to talk about with people about this one and I'll certainly be sharing it more!

I love finding out about translated old interviews, it's amazing youve put in the effort!!! Seriously loving these videos, it makes revisiting the games more fun imo
I never thought Gold and Silver were specifically about colors like red and blue, I always thought they were about the metals gold and silver. The carts were fancy too - it just fits.
Man, I'll join Tsukasa in his love for the Orre region. I've been staring at Colosseum and XD that are on my shelf. I wish we'd get something like this again. It felt fresh, new and they all around were really fun.
The thing about the torchic taking inspiration from painted chicks, this also happens in Mexico. My parents-in-law got one of these for my then 3-4 year old sister-in-law. It was painted in pink so she decided to call it "Mermelada" (jam/mermalade). She, thinking that it was real mermalade, proceded to try and eat it. Fortunately she didn't bite it or anyhting and the chick grew into a chicken, living for 3-4 years. Pretty good considering that those chicks don't survive for more than 7 months after being purchased.
@Puppy2017 If you’re asking how it happened on two opposite sides of the planet at the same time, this was less than a hundred years ago. People probably heard about it happening in another country and thought it sounded fun, before people decided it was inhumane. If you’re asking from a moral standpoint, people didn’t realize it was inhumane at the time

I really wanna know the design inspirations/philosophies for the Ultra Beasts! Love how they're very abstract and break a lot of rules for how they usually design Pokemon, I guess how they went about Blaziken's human-ish design in the case of Gen 3

Tawada’s music is soul touching. Would love to see him do a live performance if that ever happens
What the fuck
It makes it even better that the Orre games' soundtracks are literally unmatched masterpieces for the series.
the single hope i have left is that with masuda no longer directing, the orre games can come back.
Where I lived people used to do that too. They painted chicks then sold them. The paint was really damaging for the chicks so all of them ended always ended up dying after one night. I found out about the paint being poison idk how and bought one chick and immidiatly washed him. He survived and grew up, everyday I played with him.
That's fucking beautiful.

DYK Gaming has become unstoppable ever since they got some awesome translator friends.

Yeah hah
It really has been a boon for them.0
I appreciate the fact that these little known facts are things people actually don't know about the games and not what every poketuber has covered in the last 10 years.
Ikr! Refreshing.
There are metal medleys of the themes from both games on RUclips, and the original composer replied and it’s so sweet, dunno if you came across it
@@thomaslecomte1570 I've come across his comments before

Plus, he probably have songs from other games he’s worked on up on his RUclips page as well.
Not saying he wouldn’t want to work on another game in the series, just that we can’t draw that conclusion based on anything seen here.
@@CrossfacePanda he WAS more enthusiastic than the actual pokemon company people who did talk about it but, I mean, the bar is set pretty low
@@captainmarsh3664 … yeah can’t argue with that, my comment was badly phrased.
Team Yell? Really?
The story behind Blaziken is actually pretty damn sad. I love animals, so hearing about abandoned animals or animals people let die hits home. F
@smwsnes like the N word?
Japanese kids are something else jeez, here you'll get hit with a animal cruelty fine for abandoning an animal or doing something like that. anyways It worked out backwards in the end lots love Blaziken now including myself favorite starter overall no shock there. 😂
@mlt1122 why *don't* you Care about this? This is pretty damn terrifying to think about.
I like my Blaziken even more now.
It's kind of a hollow analogy when you literally have no other choice but to take one of them.

But yeah I get you we need one with humans as the mcs
Ignoring the obvious difference in resolution due to time of creation.)
I think the fact the older animations hold up (and can be argued as being better), is a testament to the quality of the games.

The story about Kiri is the legitimate sweetest thing I've ever heard regarding a video game's development.
Marcus Lindblom, the head localizer for Earthbound also did nearly the same exact thing for an NPC in Earthbound, based on his then recent daughter.
Warmed my heart man. Almost made me tear up
She’s probably a bit over 20 now.
Almost Every mainline game since then the villains try to blow up the world so blowing up a building isn’t really that crazy
Honestly if you guys want good graphics/texture go outside cuz that’s not what Pokémon is about
Pokémon is about whimsy and wonder and sense of adventure and the cast of unique and colorful characters and the friends you make along the way
The Pokémon themselves are what make the games so good not graphics
I mean graphics wasn’t what got us into the franchise in the first place was it
It was the charm of the creatures and being able to play with friends and make new friends that has always been the charm of Pokémon from the beginning to now and forever
Pokémon is completely inspired and unlike any other game that exists it’s extremely one of a kind and unique
No one can replicate it and be successful at it despite many attempts

Not to mention our main character being more morally grey and butting heads with other characters over their beliefs. I think part of it has to do with it being someone else’s creation without any of their approval. I doubt there’s any sort of bad blood or grudges held, but I figure they looked at it after it was made and thought “Wait…no, this is all wrong. This isn’t something I’d consider to be a Pokémon title.”
I genuinely loved Gale of Darkness (haven’t experienced Colosseum), but I’m thinking about the perspective of the devs and how they view the work from someone that did what they wanted with “their baby.” There are similar stories in other industries where Buzz Lightyear was poached by Disney from Pixar to make a 2D animated series and the guys at Pixar were NOT happy about it to say the least.

Fuck no, it sounds good on paper but kinda sucks

I wish we got a spin off sequel or remake of the Colosseum and Gale of Darkness.
Nice.
Lol! Same situation here, actually! Also almost 30, never knew the town's origins
Us Gen V fans feel your pain.
Exactly! I would love to play coliseum again have all the locked content automatically unlocked and achievable in game.
Well said
Check out pokemon XG: Next gen. If you have beat gale of darkness this is a revamped version. Lots of new wild pokemon, shadow pokemon, stuff like that. A refreshing way to re experience the game
YES. XD is far and away my favorite Pokemon game too, ever since I got it for Christmas back in 2005.
"I hadn't played any Pokemon games before making this Pokemon Game"
That kind of explains why Colosseum and XD are fresh, cool, innovative and the best thing with the Pokemon trademark on it to ever be created.
@@SaintDynamiteI’m playing it as I type this & it definitely holds up maybe you just have a short attention span buddy
Pidove in unova wants a word
Because colosseum and XD are just a very limited games. You also forgot each gen having a rodent.
It’s probably the rarity that makes me enjoy Coliseum more. If all Pokemon games were like that, Pokemon wouldn’t stand out quite as much. Definitely think it’s been long enough to give it another go though. 1 more gritty Pokemon please, then give it some time to cool off again.
@@skycastrum5803 aye! I want a duology port!
Maybe envy or maybe they didn't want them stealing their Thunder who knows.
There's hope. At least Pokemon GO acknowledged the concept of Shadow Pokemon
@@RiftFishing
It's the same story with Obsidian and people clamoring for another New Vegas. They aren't the same studio anymore.
Colosseum's design is done really well. It is a challenge of a game where both you and even basic trainers have to make use of seldom used Pokemon with great potential.

I enjoy discovering new mons in new games and coming across a bunch of old ones can get boring after a while
And if you include old, it should be a wide range of gens. I love Kanto, but a bunch of Kanto mons get boring.

@@jasonreed7522 There's 1 short cutscene per new main area and I may even be exaggerating and only few beginning ones are tutorials.
Battle Revolution's animations are fucking fantastic and I miss that kinda quality
I don't think graphics are the reason. Pokken looked amazing and they really tried to make that game popular.
@@Dw7freak I was talking about when the original commenter said: "As for why they don't get re-releases, I think it's because the models and battle animations would make people realize the current games are severely lacking." And as I understand Nintendo and pokemon company have the final say on what gets published, and gf are mainly just game developers.

Blaziken is my boi... I've kept my original one on my team since I was 7. I've used every catch-up mechanic ever added throughout the generations to make him a MONSTER. He has the best possible speed, the best possible attack - he started with the Adamant nature (a blessing I didn't know I'd been given until years later). I used super training in gen 6 to get him up to speed, hyper training to make his IVs perfect in gen 7, and gen 8 to give him Speed Boost, Flare Blitz, and Close Combat - and to top it all off, I was able to give him a nickname in gen 8, something I neglected to do with any pokemon until i became an adult. I named him Kindle. ;-;

My brother and I used to beat the Champion in Stadium 1 constantly because of the Free gift pokemon you could obtain every time (I remember freaking out when I got a Hitmonchan or Charmander!).

An outsider's take on a franchise is often a big gamble; if they fail to capture the essence of the series it'll tank hard, but if they keep enough of that core present and balance it right with their unique perspective it can make some magic happen.
Really it was just about Colosseum and XD breaking from a formula. As objectively bad as it was it was welcomed for being different.
@@rpgfanatic9719 It is objetively better than X and Y, Sword and Shield and the remakes of Hoenn and Shinoh.
@@rpgfanatic9719 objectively bad? what are, objectively high?
beryls wouldve been a good choice for three gem-themed names. they naturally occur in different colors depending on inclusions with each having a different name. green beryl being emerald, blue being aquamarine and red being bixbite. but i suppose "pokemon aquamarine and bixbite" doesnt have as much of a ring to it as "ruby and sapphire" does.
Agreed, it’s disappointing that HGSS didn’t do much to address that problem
I was disappointed when I found out Larvitar was in the last place in the game
I hope Masuda changes his mind on orre, it’s by far my personal favorite region for Pokémon and the two are some of the best in the series… a rerelease at least would be fantastic but just a straight remake or 3rd game would be a dream come true
I remember when Colosseum came out, it felt like a real event.
I remember seeing all the ads with public demonstrators rallying crowds of people
"WE MUST SAVE THE POKEMON!!"
And ten year old me was like "HECK YEAH WE DO!!" I didnt even understand what we were saving them from, but I was hyped none the less
The reason I begged my parents for a Gamecube
I absolutely wish for Colosseum and XD to get a modern rerelease. XD is a game I love a lot and I replayed it a lot when I was a kid. I think they should consider another game in the region, mostly just so we can get another mainline game that focuses entirely on double battles.
I think Masuda's reply was kind of rude. But also explains why GF doesn't really acknowledge the Orre games.
@@BlueAizu_ Because most people find double battles annoying.
@@wikiuser92 he's just mad that the DQ team made a better Pokemon game than modern Game Freak is capable of lmao
Because xd is better

I’m surprised that Blaziken isn’t in the Human-Like Egg Group as well
Regarding making Gen 3 be a reboot, I think that Gen 2’s problem was that many of its newer Pokemon aren’t available.
Personally I had this idea for a second try at what Unova and Hoenn did where for the older fans, the only old Pokemon that’d be in the regional dex could be Pokemon that got pre-evolutions, evolutions, or regional variants
That's because Blaziken would have to share its Egg Groups with Torchic and Combusken. Torchic in particular wouldn't fit in the Human-like Egg Group.
Yeah a lot of people think slugma and magcargo are gen 3 because of how rare they are in solve r
The reason it's not in the human-like group is because torchic doesn't have a humanoid body shape. It's the same reason Grimmsnarl is in the human-like group while Hatterene isn't, it's pre-evos are ball shaped.
@@Awesomesufff What about "R" needs solving?
Colosseum is one of my favorites because it's actually challenging! Only sub-par pokemon are available to catch for the majority of the game, you're chronically underleveled unless you really want to grind at Mt. Battle, and catching shadow pokemon (from the Cipher administration in particular) can be a massive pain in the ass.
Pokémon Colosseum was a great idea and ridiculously fun. I feel they hit the mark with their goal.
I know right. I loved it as a kid, i played it over and over. Id love a remake
The GCN games have phenomenal music, I'm glad he's proud of his work with them.
Black and White truly was the only Pokemon Reboot, as it contained basically new Pokemon until you defeated the Elite Four.
Huh that explains why colosseum was actually different these guys should make more Pokémon games Colosseum and XD are highly underrated
Masuda said the samething about an open world pokemon game and Pokémon snap 2 and here we are so you never know
@@madnessarcade7447 Masuda doesn't work at Game Freak anymore so here's hoping
Really sad to hear that there won't be any more wild experimentation like Colosseum. What a wild, cool game that was.
A lot of them die because the paint is toxic.
The first 7 minutes made me feel that childlike wonder.. thank you for that. I haven't felt this way about pokemon for so long and I'm not talking about nostalgia. I feel like the newer games main tactic is nostalgic feelings, but that only goes so far.
"White Dragon" Rayquaza is actually kind of cool looking. I'd like to see that design maybe return as a regional variant.
makes me wonder, why they no decide make the shiny Rayquaza white?
Not really sure how you could make a regional variant of Rayquaza, considering it travels the world and lives in the ozone layer and all that
@@inkyno1 That's easy.
We actually have that Pokémon, it’s called Reshiram, A.k.a. the Yu-Gi-Oh rip off of a blue eyes white dragon…
I'm surprised they expected Blazekin to be hated so much, he was my favorite third evolution form starter for that gen
Mine too, hell its a lot of people's favorite
It's one of my favorite starters, even when it started the Fire/Fighting trend. It looks pretty cool.
They achieved the complete opposite lmao
Blaziken is still my favorite pokemon to date, simply because of a huge love of flashy superpower martial arts.

I remember how many times I talked to her and read that text box. Hearing this and it comes full circle is slightly touching. Very cool.
How'd Kiri felt about the Dexit incident?

Hoenn has the perfect balance of new and old Pokémon in a regional dex
yeah i think that's the perfect formula. brand new pokedex that gradually introduces old pokemon as you progress in the game

Thats awesome. I'm glad the chicken didn't get thrown away and had a nice life loll
It caught me off guard when he said people just threw them out. We always raised ours to adulthood and took care of them their entire lives.
So she called it marmalade, completely on her own, and then decided to eat it because she thought it really was marmalade? Kids are weird
@Puppy2017 If you’re asking how it happened on two opposite sides of the planet at the same time, this was less than a hundred years ago.
