So I wanted to add to this; Much like with how Zygarde and Kyurem were positioned, in Diamond and Pearl, Giritina was also there just sitting in a cave with no attached story until the release of Platinum. Even Necrozma had a similar position as the only Pokemon in the Ultra Beast side story in Sun and Moon, then in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon did Necrozma get any real story. So it definitely was set up for a Z version that never got released.
To further add to this, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire have Rayquaza in a similar styled post-game dungeon to Giratina. Not a whole lot of story until Pokemon Emerald where it breaks up Groudon and Kyogre's fight. Pokemon Sword & Shield do have Eternatus but, it's actually involved with the story and a big final fight for the end of the game with its own special form at the end unlike the rest. Instead of an expanded version, they did DLC which added new Pokemon for the first time as an update instead of a new version.
I mean, if that were true, then where's Mewtwo's game? He also fits the description perfectly, being in an important cave accessible only in the post-game.

I think another good sign for the possibility of paired versions like XZ and YZ is that there are two Zygarde cores in the anime, - blue and red, matching the color motifs of the original Kalos games and their box legendaries. I would guess that the two Z versions would've featured differently colored Zygarde cores. On the other hand the cores aren't actually visible in Sun and Moon - if it weren't for the anime we wouldn't know what they look like.
This was a awesome video about all the Pokémon cancelled video games. Learning about Pokemon Pink and Pokémon X2 and Y2 was great. We could have AZ’s character, AZ’s Floette, Zygarde’s backstory and the 3000 thousand year war!
My two cents on pokemon pink: wasn’t Clefairy originally going to be Satoshi’s partner in early drafts but they changed it to Pikachu for a larger general appeal? So I hypothesis that pink was probably going to be identical to yellow except with Clefairy as a sort of ‘what-if’ by just changing the partner
tbh, would have been cool to change it to a female lead too. So same game just different starters and player character. Yellow is Ash and Pikachu while Pink is Ashley and Clefairy or something.
I think people get too hung up on the Clefairy theory and miss a bigger piece of evidence: Pokemon Gold and Silver has a special held item (the Light Ball) that you can only get by transferring over a Pikachu from Yellow version. Gold and Silver also has a super obscure held item called the Polkadot Bow that you can only get by sending over a Jigglypuff from a past game. The Polkadot Bow is weird because it's completely identical to another item in the game (Pink Bow), except it has a different name and you can only get it off a gen 1 Jigglypuff. To me, this sounds like it was planned to be Jigglypuff's equivalent to the Light Ball, but got turned into a normal item when the game didn't happen.
Regarding Pink, it's important to remember that Pikachu didn't get solidified with mascot potential right away. Clefairy was considered as a mascot, so it's possible the pink code was a remnant of the uncertainty from that time. I'll admit this seems unlikely, since the anime and Yellow released with a whole year separating them. But since it's hard to find when Yellow actually started being developed, I would keep a pin in it until further info is found.
I don't think we need any further info. LGPE is the smoking gun of their original intent, replacing rejected mascot Clefairy with newly-minted secondary mascot Eevee as Pikachu's co-star in these remakes of Yellow, in which Eevee beat Clefairy back in the day for the position of Pikachu's rival.
@@autobotstarscream765 Eevee also ended up as Gary's ace in the anime, which of course was reflected in Pokemon yellow as well. It was a conscious decision even back then. Eevee being cute but a bit more neutral probably is what sealed it for them, plus keeping with the theme of common pets you had a mouse and cat/dog.
Gary's Ace & Starter in the Anime was revealed to have been Blastoise during Ash's Epic battle against him during Season 5/6 depending on how the Johto League Championship is categorized. Gary's Eevee/Umbreon may have been depicted as a rival for Pikachu, although the real highlight was Charizard vs Blastoise.
I assume it was going to be made to more be marketed to girls. At least that is what I bet a development group of all men would decide if they wanted to go after the young girl market.
@@ravenpotter3 That development group of all men hired a woman to design Pikachu in the first place because Ken Sugimori thought his creation Clefairy was too _masculine,_ so it all kind of evens out there between Pikachu, Clefairy, and Eevee as Pokémon with mass market appeal.
Love how this channel has become the reporter of some of the most interesting info and huge breakthrough. Also can't get enough gigaleak even if I already know all about it. I know it was passed but it was still a neat surprise and throwback to just hear Pocket Monsters 64 mentioned. I haven't heard or thought about it since hearing about it alongside Fire Emblem 64 a good while ago.
"The DS won't replace the GBA" but like... the DS literally had a GBA game slot, and was better in every way. Like of course it would replace the GBA. I think it's so stupid nintendo pretended that the replacement wouldn't happen when it seemed so obvious
Something I wanted to mention that goes hand in hand with Pokemon Z. In like 2014, there was a trailer or sneak peak of Zygarde in his 100% form for the anime. Most thought it was a movie, but that footage was never used in the anime or movies.
Glad you were able to talk with Eddie and get the game playable again. I ran into him on social media a year or two ago and I’ve always been interested in his project.
X and Y will always be sour in my mind because it was my first massive letdown in pokemon, but I adored so many of the aesthetics that it makes me really sad to see that it never got a followup game that could've really ironed out it's issues. To this day I still get so frustrated that we never got any use out of that massive crystal sun dial thing in one of the towns.
It was released unfinished and deadlines and money basically killed any original attempt to finish the generation properly. Hopefully they finish it in the remakes. I love XY and I love Kalos and I just really really want it to conclude on good terms instead of constantly being remembered as a letdown.
Yeah, I don't think any generation got disrespected by its own creators as much as Gen6 did. It's such a shame because XY had the potential to be truly amazing and I personally enjoyed them a lot. The region is beautiful, I love the laid-back atmosphere and pacing and it still has the best character customization even 10 years later.
@@spatial_rind that what I’m hoping with if they ever do the gen 6 remakes. Honestly I don’t want a new remake of black and white, I just want the gen 6 remakes. There’s so many details and ideas that got scrapped because of time, and honestly I’d take a black(2) and white(2) port anyday if it meant they could spend way more time on a gen 6 remake. Because It’s just such a shame that so much was unfinished and didn’t get fleshed out. I want to see AZ’s floette, I want to see zygardes whole backstory, I want to see the big sundial, I want to know what the ghost girl was on about, I want to learn about the war, I want to learn about all those things! They literally gave us the most interesting generation then they couldn’t go back and flesh it out because of time constraints. WE COULD HAVE HAD POKÉMON TRANLATERS! (It’s an actually thing that was planned at some stage but got scrapped because of time constraints.) I love this gen, and there’s just so much there that needed more time in the oven. And I’m hoping it gets that treatment in the future, because like I would love to know. Idk, 🤷
I really wonder why Sun and Moon worked out better. There seems to have been a lot of unknown internal strife within the company that Game Freak would never make public around those years
@@BierBart12 i don't exactly know what you are saying but the supposed reason that game freak never made pokemon z is becasue pokemon was sort of on a decline at the time with each generation selling worse than the last. it wasn't a super pressing issue or anything but they wanted to put their eggs in more baskets and decided to try to create some new series to see if anything worked. obviously, the 3ds titles actually did really well and now pokemon is bigger than ever again
I love these, you all do more research and finding hidden games then any other RUclips page let alone any other gaming magazine. Keep up the awesome work!
The pokemon saying their names was almost certainly cut due to space limitations. Audio took up a lot of space at that scale, even compressed to potato.
They might have been able to fit it on a larger GBC-only cartridge, but yeah. Also, don’t forget that the voices were the Japanese ones, which are usually different.
They had room to do bit crushed voices, it just doesn't sound good at the required bitrste to fit the whole dex so they just did Pikachu with a higher bitrste so it doesn't sound as much like demons having taco bell diahreah
As someone who has maxed out the clocks on several Pokemon games before, I can without a doubt say that I played Ruby and Sapphire's Pokemon Pinball more than the mainline gen 3 games themselves. I LOVED Pokemon Pinball and I'm so bummed that they never added any more in the series.
Been watching you dudes for a decade and I know my comments late but the fact that this channel has gone from a very basic fun facts channel to just straight up getting industry sources and restoring a old web Pokémon game is incredibly radical
That was an amazing video. I have nothing but respect and a healthy dose of awe at the amount of work and investigative journalism that goes into these releases, but this one is a special kind of amazing; not only did you give us obscure facts that would have most likely been lost to time forever, but you have managed to literally resurrect a lost media that is now preserved and will live on long after we're gone. I tip my hat at all of the DYKD staff and I'd like the video more if I could. Cheers!
I said this last year, but I’m pretty sure GF ended up seeing _Sun and Moon_ as the extension of _X and Y,_ possibly as a way to trip up expectations but continuing the story in a new generation, but ended up running out of time and dialed it back. This make sense considering that the other main focus of the _XY_ anime, Ash-Greninja, was haphazardly included in the _Sun and Moon Demo Version,_ and AZ’s Floette was programmed into the Gen 7 games. Perhaps they planned to have a part of the story/post game where AZ appears and he gives you his Floette, with something similar for Ash-Greninja, but they were scrapped and they decided to include Ash-Greninja in the demo to incentivize people to download it.
AZ's Floette being there does not say much, it is still partially accounted for in Home. It being kicked out of the actual games was most likely a result of dexit.
I really wish Game Freak would bite the bullet and split off a new studio that just does Pokemon and is staffed with people that want to work on Pokemon. That way the people who are tired of it can work on other stuff and Pokemon can get the love, passion, and effort it desperately needs.
@@siddhartacrowley8759 and those games were fun and unique. They had their flaws especially in tryign to push 3D graphics on a budget. But they had some really fun characters and storylines.
I really don't understand your comment, but if it is what I think, the current state of pokemon is no due to lack of passion or lack of staff for projects pokemon has transcended games, anime, cards, etc., it's a whole phenomena, to beggin with they were never technical marvels if we're being honest, but I digress, the issue with pokemon is that is managed by essentially 3 companies at the same time, game freak, nintendo and the pokemon company, it has literally become so big you don't really need to try in any instance be it games, manga, anime, cards, for it to sell, it's capitalism at it's finest, I found a very interesting diagram square on facebook just the other day, it showed the squares of "my first pokemon game, my first MAIN game, my first starter, my favorite starter, my favorite game, my favorite game story, my favorite champion, my favorite rival" and such, wanna hear the funniest part, the person that posted this said his first pokemon game was "pokemon go", his first main game was "pokemon shield", his favorite rival was actually Hop, his favorite story was shield's, his all time favorite pokemon was lucario, and his favorite starter was the frokie evolution line, the kid said he started pokemon with pokemon go, this is when it finally hit me, all the people complaining about the new pokemon games are people who had their start in pokemon black/white at the earliest, but people have been born waay beyond that point getting into pokemon, some by app like this kid, some by the cards, some by the anime, and the games are still making millions, kids don't care about frame rates, conectivity, they just want fun new pokemon to play with, and on that aspect sorry but GF is still delivering, I love miraidon and koraidon, I love meowscarada and Skeledirge, I found ogerpon adorable, the games are no longer a priority, the whole merch is, pokemon will never go back to be "just a game", weather this is a good or a bad thing, it really depends on who to ask, me personally? I'm fine either way, all I expect from pokemon are new pokemon desings, nothing more, nothing less.

"too many Chinese players were pirating Nintendo games" did they ever think maybe thats because they weren't selling Nintendo games in China so piracy was the only way to get them??
@@man_without_fear6518 if they're going to pirate it anyway, then might as well put some copies into shops for those who want a physical copy. Better than just outright refusing to sell it there.
Literally. I mainly think its more about international relations rather than Nintendo’s willingness to sell in China. A corporation will go where money is calling, but nationalism will stay stubborn through it all.

"Every time we finish a game's development, we're left with a feeling that there are still things left unfinished" We can tell. Sad that more than a decade later things haven't changed
The voices in Yellow that were cut were in an unlistenable format, these audio clips were the best the fans could code it back to readability. It was certain it was clearer like Pikachu's final voices. If anyone can convert the files better, please do share.
Z could have been insane with lore about Zygarde and AZ's Floette. Could have tied them together where the return of AZ threatened Kalos and thus awoke Zygarde.
Omg, I remember the Pokemon 2000 browser game! I played it a bunch of times around the time the movie came out, when it went down, I just thought it was gone because the movie promotional period had run its course, I had no idea that it had gotten struck by nintendo! So cool to see it's actually been archived, I've always secretly hoped someone was able to put it in a flash archive somewhere.
The way Misty is styled and the way she emotes when speaking in the canceled Pokemon Picross game is identical to the way Professor Tetra looks and emotes in Pokemon Picross for the 3DS. Crazy stealth reference.
17:24 I do wish that they ported Black and White along with its sequels to 3DS, possibly as Download only titles. I am glad we didn’t get Grey given that B2W2 are good enough substitutes and Grey would’ve likely not made updates to the Pokedex. 20:32 I also think it would’ve been cool if rather than doing USUM, they went back to Kalos for sequels.
Impressive video. It shows that the Pokémon Company wants employees to be quieter and make us customers surprised. Maybe if the anime is not giving so much information then these games may probably be revealed and available as well. Anyway, nice video and most details helped me to fulfill some unanswered questions.
Cheers mate. Had a lotta help, especially from Eddie, Rufus10, and DoomTay. My translator Jacob top of course. All those guys can do stuff I could never do.
Likely the Kalos revisit was canceled very early on around the end of XY's development and the Middle of ORAS. The Mirage spots relating to Hoopa Hyperspace holes were clearly meant for Kalos and there were clearly Mysteries intentionally left over. Gamefreak had done the same thing with Ruby/Saphire to Emerald, Diamond/Pearl to Platinum, Black/White to Black2/White 2 and Sun/Moon to Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. Likely the extra work that the 3DS added and the director shake up after ORAS made Z version get canceled which is why there wasn't a set of games released in 2015 as were planned originally. Stars was possibly a test for what Gamefreak could do on the Switch and was probably the start of Sword and Shield. A number of developers have ported previous games over to new console to help understand programming and development for new hardware. Game in general are planned out years ahead of time, so it is unlikely that titles like Samus Returns, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were ever planned for switch.
No. If you've dealt with it in PGO, you should know it's a terrible idea to implement in the core games. If Game Freak really has an issue with hacking, that would exacerbate the problem like no tomorrow.
The weather to date system on Sword/Shield was horrendous. Although Tbh, real time irl weather based, actually may have worked. To heck with that summertime Quagsire though :/
There's something nostalgic about seeing the old anime-esque artworks used for the Pokémon 2000 flash game. Haven't seem them since the green 'official' handbook two decades ago.
I wonder if Pokémon Pink and Purple (mentioned in the 2000 interview as hypothetical sequels) might’ve been pitched to feature Clefable and Gengar as mascots. This would’ve matched color scheme, established a 2nd “trilogy” in Japan after RGB, and legitimized the widely believed connection between Clefable and Gengar with Gengar supposedly representing the shadow of Clefable.
What mine of my friends keep wanting from a pokémon game is one where you control the pokémon in battle. An action game. Your trainer, ie .you, the character that you make can call out attacks and the more you listen to him the greater your affection will grow just like in current games, however the more you as the player follow your own moves and attacks can bring out higher strengths and certain weaknesses as in Ash Greninja being a thing. Gameplay would be similar to Nino Kuni battles, But the world is as huge and on the same scale of Zelda: BOTW/ToTK or Pokémon Arceus.
Man Pinball on the DS being so close to releasing is a real heartbreak. Loved playing the earlier entries with my brother. I hope a clever rom hack comes along someday.
Zygarde's complete form always looked like the letter A to me, so now i'm convinced the placeholders were supposed to be A & Z... I mean, theres even the character AZ lol
I wish they’d talk about canceled games and ideas more. They’re a part of Pokémon history and they’ve all contributed to the franchise’s success and growth to some degree
I think it's quite obvious why Gear Project games are not super popular with Pokémon fans. What's attractive about Pokémon is often that it's cosy, it's an RPG (so it doesn't require input speed), and it allows for great customisation (with the team you make). In many ways, it's similar to some Final Fantasy & Lufia titles, or Tales of Symphonia, for example. None of the Gear Project games seem to be any of that.
ORAS was awesome. Adding more megas and adding megas into the story was awesome, plus the delta episode after becoming champion. Last pokemon games that I thought were truly awesome.

The main reason why Clefairy would likely have been the Pokemon instead of Jigglypuff for a Pink version is because it's well known at this point that Clefairy was supposed to be the mascot of the Pokemon franchise as a whole, before Pikachu took its spot instead.
Its a small detail, but at 7:50 when he informs us that the 3DS shop is closed, its nice that he said "in 2023" not "this year". It makes it easier for future watchers and not make them have to look at the release date of the video. Theres been so many videos where they talk about something that was released "this year" or "5 years ago" and you sit there and go "wait...when?"

they released pokemon picross on the ds. its fun, but the worst mechanic is that you spend energy and when you run out you have to wait, but its otherwise ok. maybe the other versions were like minesweeper ? but its definitely more like sudoku. if anyones curious, your goal is to finish a picture, so you calculate how many squares you should put in the board by seeing how many there are both on the x axis of the board and the y axis. thats it basically. you can add xs for the squares you dont think should have a coloured square. and thats picross !
Man, Pokémon Pinball DS sounds like my dream game. I started sneaking playing Pokémon Pinball Ruby&Sapphire after bedtime as a kid simply because it was the game that saved the fastest, so I could save really fast and turn off the Gameboy if my mom started to come upstairs, but I quickly fell in love with the game and played it constantly. It also got me real good, didn't know Professor Oak was a Jedi lmao
Well, Oak, like Rosenberg, is a Jedi name.
Well it's not too far off from the plot of the film, which involved Pokémon sensing a disturbance in the balance of nature.
Close; Clefairy was originally going to be the mascot of Pokemon as a whole, but Pikachu took its place.
At least the idea of Clefairy being a main character was explored in the CoroCoro Pokemon manga
@@F1areonpl
tbh, would have been cool to change it to a female lead too.
@@autobotstarscream765
Eevee also ended up as Gary's ace in the anime, which of course was reflected in Pokemon yellow as well.

Something I wanted to mention that goes hand in hand with Pokemon Z. In like 2014, there was a trailer or sneak peak of Zygarde in his 100% form for the anime. Most thought it was a movie, but that footage was never used in the anime or movies.
Ou peut-on trouver ?
Glad you were able to talk with Eddie and get the game playable again. I ran into him on social media a year or two ago and I’ve always been interested in his project.
Literally every piece of content on this channel is great.
The sun dail was so obviously gonna be tied to diance that its painful she never had anything to do with it
It was released unfinished and deadlines and money basically killed any original attempt to finish the generation properly. Hopefully they finish it in the remakes. I love XY and I love Kalos and I just really really want it to conclude on good terms instead of constantly being remembered as a letdown.
I don't think it was a let down in any way at all.
(It’s an actually thing that was planned at some stage but got scrapped because of time constraints.)
I love this gen, and there’s just so much there that needed more time in the oven. And I’m hoping it gets that treatment in the future, because like I would love to know.
Idk, 🤷
man i wish we got a pokemon z. pokemon x and y had so much potential, it wouldve been amazing to see a polished version like what platinum was
I really wonder why Sun and Moon worked out better.

The pokemon saying their names was almost certainly cut due to space limitations. Audio took up a lot of space at that scale, even compressed to potato.
That and it sounded like death

Cheers!
Thanks vguy, too kind :)

That pinball game sounds actually amazing. We need this to become a fangame.
Game in general are planned out years ahead of time, so it is unlikely that titles like Samus Returns, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were ever planned for switch.
cool video mate. I enjoyed it a lot. I might save it to rewatch for a bit.

No. If you've dealt with it in PGO, you should know it's a terrible idea to implement in the core games. If Game Freak really has an issue with hacking, that would exacerbate the problem like no tomorrow.

Would be 6 games for Gen1😵

What mine of my friends keep wanting from a pokémon game is one where you control the pokémon in battle. An action game. Your trainer, ie .you, the character that you make can call out attacks and the more you listen to him the greater your affection will grow just like in current games, however the more you as the player follow your own moves and attacks can bring out higher strengths and certain weaknesses as in Ash Greninja being a thing. Gameplay would be similar to Nino Kuni battles, But the world is as huge and on the same scale of Zelda: BOTW/ToTK or Pokémon Arceus.
I'm always so impressed every time u guys drop a video

I wish they’d talk about canceled games and ideas more. They’re a part of Pokémon history and they’ve all contributed to the franchise’s success and growth to some degree
I think it's quite obvious why Gear Project games are not super popular with Pokémon fans. What's attractive about Pokémon is often that it's cosy, it's an RPG (so it doesn't require input speed), and it allows for great customisation (with the team you make). In many ways, it's similar to some Final Fantasy & Lufia titles, or Tales of Symphonia, for example. None of the Gear Project games seem to be any of that.
Well done what an amazing and informative video!
ORAS was awesome. Adding more megas and adding megas into the story was awesome, plus the delta episode after becoming champion. Last pokemon games that I thought were truly awesome.
