Holy crap! Celebi is a Pokémon known for traveling through time. They put that shrine there with no purpose in Gold and Silver. Then they make Crystal and Celebi retroactively gave the shrine a purpose. It's like Celebi's time travel had an actual effect on the game it was released in. That's so cool.
Additionally, nobody remembers why the shrine was put there in the first place, so it's like it was always meant to be there. It all comes full circle.
7:00 its also noteworthy that Kokopelli was a popular design and pop-culture fad during the '90s. If you go through old media from the period like TV shows like Seinfeld, cartoons like Rugrats, various magazines etc. you'll be sure to spot it here and there. Considering the time period of Gold/Silver's development this I imagine likely inspired these early designs of Celebi.
Ooh, now I know where I saw that design before. My friend had a statue or lamp or something on his nightstand with that design in the late 90s. I always thought it looked cool.
I wished these guys would mention the original Japanese names and versions instead of localizing everything to the English names... and making it like they came first...
I was pretty bummed that although they added Shadow Pokemon to Pokemon Go, when they added Shadow Mewtwo and Shadow Lugia they didn’t use their designs from Pokken or XD, respectively. That would’ve been a cool way to incorporate them
They would have likely needed to buy the rights to use the shadow Lugia from Genius Sonority. And as much as we would love a call back to past games, Niantic and probably Game Freak would rather promote new games. My issue is that you can’t make purification easier by walking like in Colosseum/XD. Pokémon Go is literally made for walking!
That's because they aren't the same thing. Shadow Pokémon in _XD_ are called "Dark Pokémon" in Japanese, while the Japanese name for them in _GO_ is "Shadow Pokémon." Shadow Luigia and Mewtwo are thus referred to as "Dark Lugia" and "Dark Mewtwo" in Japanese respectively. It makes perfect sense why the Shadow Pokmon in _GO_ don't resemble other takes on the concept.
The idea that Mew is a chaotic, mischievous and unpredictable creature seems to have made its way into one of the recent Journeys episodes, where it wreaks havoc and causes trouble for the Project Mew team. It's a neat callback if so Also, the name Watatsumi is used in at least one other instance, as "Watatsumi's Symphonia", the Japanese name of Primarina's Z-Move "Oceanic Operetta"

I mean, when you think about it in the Lucario movie, Mew did kidnapped Pikachu and Meowth to the Tree of Beginning despite probably knowing them from the past movie and should've return them back to Ash and Team Rocket, but instead wanted to continue playing. Talk about selfish.

Another fun thing for Ho-oh and Lugia found in the Japanese opening to Pokémon GS (Johto Journeys): the phrase "Golden Sun and Silver Moon" is sung in English and ties in perfectly with the concept of the two representing day and night.
Ho-oh and Lugia also represent the rain and sun that nurture plants, Celebi the protector of the forests the other two grow and controls the time forests grow. At least that's my headcanon.

It’s hilarious and endearing that they forgot why they put the celebi shrine at all 😂 Maybe they just wanted set dressing so that spot didn’t look boring or empty Idk tho
I remember hearing a long time ago that there isn't a particular sprite for the shrine in Gen 2, it's made craftly by reusing other tilesets in a creative manner. Given also that Gen 2 started planning as the entirety of Japan and not just Kansai, it is possible that they had the idea of the shrine to represent the more traditional part of Kansai or maybe just Kyoto (which became Ecruteak). What that means is that it's probably just a left over design element trying to flesh out the limitations they were working with during the early beta ages that really had no purpose other than to make it look like the place it was meant to represent. It's probably as meaningful as the Bellsprout plates inside Bellsprout Tower, or just like the truck in gen 1 which was a left over sprite from beta content. They sure stand out, but they're not doing anything there other than looking pretty.
It most likely was just decoration. It’s made with existing graphics in the tile set, it would have been an easy way to add a bit of atmosphere to the forest without using up some of the game’s extremely limited memory.
I think Colosseum reinforces the connection between celebi and Kokopelli because you use flutes in that game to summon celebi to open the door to a shadow Pokemon's heart. Mew is a wild card. I've kept up with the anime's more recent stories, and in the final series with Ash, Mew was a violent and dangerous monster at the drop of a hat. It sent three kids and two...tens? Into a psychic-induced fever dream about the beginning of the world, then it tried to nuke them from orbit, and finally it just playfully plants its butt on the deuteragonist's hand before disappearing. That pink thing is unhinged in more modern stories, though it mellowed out in the Lucario movie by just being playful with a side of hidden strength. Love that little fetus cat. I love when dykg narrators break from basically just taking about the facts to showing personality like angrily affirming the legendary beasts are cats to bombing the crap out of an island
There's something that you forgot: The Anime and the films uses the roars from a lot of Kaijus for the Legendary Pokemon. Palkia has the howls of a cayote and the roars of Mecha-King Ghidorah and the GMK Ghidorah Dialga has the roars of Kraa the Sea Monster and Manda Giratina, Lunala & Zapdos has Mothra's roars. Giratina also has the roars of the Mothra Larva. Reshiram has the roars of Megaguirus & Keizer Ghidorah with a wolf howl all combined. Zekrom has Baragon's Roars Kyurem has the roars of Zilla (AKA the TriStar Godzilla) and Monster X. Yveltal has the roars of Megaguirus and a pitched up Anguirus. Zygarde's roars are complicated.... Solgaleo has Monser X's Roars (either that or King Caesar) Necrozma has the roars of an unknown Kaiju Dusk Mane Necrozma has Ebirah's Roars and Gamera's combined and the next episode, it has the howls of a cayote and the roars of Mecha-King Ghidorah Dusk Wings Necrozma has the latter Ultra Necrozma has the lower pitched version of DWN and is combined with Gamera's roars Eternatus has the roars of Ebirah and Gamera combined. Groudon, Kyogre, & Rayquaza from The XY Special: The Strongest Mega Evolution has the roars of Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra, & Kraa the sea monster. POSTED: 7:42 PM EST Saturday January 21st 2022.
Palkia also uses the roar of the STAR WARS Varactyl, Boga. The lizard creature the Obi-Wan Kenobi rides on Utapau in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith”
Lugia and Ho-Oh's feather in the Pokemon Adventure manga were the key ingredients to creating a Time Ball that is specific in controlling Celebi in the Ilex Forest Shrine. The story may not be canon but the author worked and discussed closely with the game creators and each arc and saga is based of the actual games! So you're not wrong that the bird duo are time related but less on their powers but more on what they mean to Celebi
It's pretty obvious the Legendary CATS were based on felines. How could you not see a tiger and a lion for Raikou and Entei respectively. Never really thought of Suicune's inspiration, but leopard makes sense.
To know we'd very easily know what the original draft Mew could sound like in the future (like Kyubey or Monokuma's cutesy voices with unsettling lines)
I always saw Mew as a faerie type of existence. They are mischievous, small, beautiful/cute, more often then not being cruel and uncaring for others as long as they are amused
16:37 core memory unlocked. Something I didn’t remember- I definitely called them legendary cats when I was playing crystal as a like 10 year old, but school friends kept saying dogs so I started saying dogs. I ended up switching to legendary beasts eventually and being cool with ambiguity, but to hear that it’s cats 100% is nice.
Its head is a lot longer than a cat's, so that does give it the impression of being a dog or even a deer head more so than any feline. Now that we know it's based loosely on a leopard, though, it's easier to focus more on the body rather than the head to see it is indeed more cat-like.
It’s an interesting point that in Pokken’s story. The character Nia mentions Cinnabar Island and the documents about Mewtwo. This has a chance at being said whenever you have a boss fight with it at the beginning of the match, though doesn’t appear in the text box, only voiced by Nia. That makes me wonder what it’s like in the Japanese version’s text box and voiced dialogue. It might be canon in that way.
Phantom of the Opera is one of my all time favorite musicals, yet I never made the connection between him and Mewtwo. Knowing now what you revealed it does make sense. That's so cool!
12:41 by “Time-Related abilities” I would take that as “Time of day” if they’re “Pokémon of Day and Night” giving them moves that where different during the day or night would compliment the addition of a day/night cycle. Also the statement “That idea remains in heartgold and soulsilver” could just refer to the statement at the end about them remaining as “Pokemon of night and day” however that’s just speculation.
Did you know...? that Mew fact is actually revealed on one specific card from the TCG. on the Ancient Mew's pokedex entry, (once you transalate the runes) it says Mew is "Little, Cook and Evil.". All these years I always thought it was kinda creepy, but now you guys confirmed it is true!. Ty for this awesome channel and your AMAZING work.
The Gen 2 forest shrine originally had no purpose, and the infamous Gen 1 truck had no purpose... kinda spooky tbh, the fact that it happened twice. Great video btw well-researched as always!

Love how any place in a pokemon region that's just there and has no importance becomes a breeding ground for legendary pokemon rumors
To be fair, I could understand Mewtwo being very angry about losing to Ash and wanting revenge considering Ash's track record before the Sun/Moon anime
Heatran just got entirely skipped. That was the one I wanted to hear the mosh about. Hopefully there’s a part 3 that covers the weirder side legendaries.
That description of Mew sounds a lot like Peter Pan. Which would make the climax of that first film a showdown between The Phantom of the Opera and Peter Pan.
I am reasonably certain that dog-like elements were incorporated into the Beasts even if their main inspirations were cats. Suicune's muzzle is more canine than the rest of its body. Raikou's a dang tiger though, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.
I got a lot of love for the legendary bird true, being the first legendary trio we were introduced to as young Pokémon fans. However, I cannot deny, the legendary dogs (or cats) have some of the best designs in the entire Pokémon catalogue. Absolutely flawless!
Ho-oh and Lugia could possibly also represent new and old to tie in with the idea of time. Like Lugia's tower was destroyed in the past. Ho-oh represents the Phoenix and rebirth with the legendary dogs, giving new life. Time can also refer to the alternation of day and night, we keep time based on when the sun and moon are out, also, there are solar and lunar calendars. Going along with the moon it makes sense that Lugia is associated with the sea since tides are associated with the gravitational pull of the moon.
Legendary beasts/cats. It sounds to me as the alternation of day and night as well. But we have the Pokemon Sun & Moon games as well. Haven't gotten that far in the games myself, but expect the legendarys to have a significant connection to the naming of the games. So would overshadow the day & night cycle of Lugia and Ho-oh.
@@jackmilburn3819 I don't really remember the story of sun and moon mostly because I skipped through the dialogue but I thought it was more related to space/worm holes/alternate worlds. I felt the part of the sun and moon were more related to the design of the legendaries and the time cycle in the games. Feel free to update me when you finish!
An interesting trivia, in the manga Pokemon Adventures, the GS Ball that captures Celebi is also called the ball that captures time and is made from the Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing which have the effect of allowing people to act in the voids of time.
Honestly I pretty much nearly always saw Entei as a mix between a lion and a dog while Raikou was more Saber Tiger and Suicune more built like a canine...
2:42 Funnily enough, here in America those episodes DID air before the movie was released in theaters, so on our end their original plan to foreshadow Mewtwo worked out, albeit without the intended plot line.

Celebi: "Hi, I'm the same as Mew"
Really didn't know that Lugia and Ho-oh have a time theme along with Celebi. Maybe Pokemon Legends Celebi will answer that question
excellently researched as always. the only channel with new pokemon trivia in 2023
I love when dykg narrators break from basically just taking about the facts to showing personality like angrily affirming the legendary beasts are cats to bombing the crap out of an island
Really love this episode, keep up the good work guys~
the original blue drum raikou just sounds like what they ended up going for with thundurus's design
The blue version looks so much better
also dragnair last form
There's something that you forgot:
The Anime and the films uses the roars from a lot of Kaijus for the Legendary Pokemon.
Palkia has the howls of a cayote and the roars of Mecha-King Ghidorah and the GMK Ghidorah
Dialga has the roars of Kraa the Sea Monster and Manda
Giratina, Lunala & Zapdos has Mothra's roars. Giratina also has the roars of the Mothra Larva.
Reshiram has the roars of Megaguirus & Keizer Ghidorah with a wolf howl all combined.
Zekrom has Baragon's Roars
Kyurem has the roars of Zilla (AKA the TriStar Godzilla) and Monster X.
Yveltal has the roars of Megaguirus and a pitched up Anguirus.
Zygarde's roars are complicated....
Solgaleo has Monser X's Roars (either that or King Caesar)
Necrozma has the roars of an unknown Kaiju
Dusk Mane Necrozma has Ebirah's Roars and Gamera's combined and the next episode, it has the howls of a cayote and the roars of Mecha-King Ghidorah
Dusk Wings Necrozma has the latter
Ultra Necrozma has the lower pitched version of DWN and is combined with Gamera's roars
Eternatus has the roars of Ebirah and Gamera combined.
Groudon, Kyogre, & Rayquaza from The XY Special: The Strongest Mega Evolution has the roars of Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra, & Kraa the sea monster.
POSTED: 7:42 PM EST Saturday January 21st 2022.
Now I need a compilation of every single legendary cry
Palkia also uses the roar of the STAR WARS Varactyl, Boga. The lizard creature the Obi-Wan Kenobi rides on Utapau in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith”
@@theonewhocannotsmell127 It's a cayote howl.

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!
Is it? Is it like pitched and reversed?
Lugia and Ho-Oh's feather in the Pokemon Adventure manga were the key ingredients to creating a Time Ball that is specific in controlling Celebi in the Ilex Forest Shrine. The story may not be canon but the author worked and discussed closely with the game creators and each arc and saga is based of the actual games! So you're not wrong that the bird duo are time related but less on their powers but more on what they mean to Celebi
It's pretty obvious the Legendary CATS were based on felines. How could you not see a tiger and a lion for Raikou and Entei respectively. Never really thought of Suicune's inspiration, but leopard makes sense.
entei and raikou i see cats, but suicune looks so canine to me i dont see the leopard resemblence >
Read their early dex entries and then tell me what kind of cats bark.
Legendary Gerbils
Legendary Beasts

Great video thanks DYKG
To know we'd very easily know what the original draft Mew could sound like in the future (like Kyubey or Monokuma's cutesy voices with unsettling lines)
I can't wait for future videos from you guys.
I always saw Mew as a faerie type of existence. They are mischievous, small, beautiful/cute, more often then not being cruel and uncaring for others as long as they are amused
Love❤️ this channel! DYKG really do their research.
I learned about so many amazing artists and geographic location from this video. Great job to the video creators.
I always watch these videos before going to sleep, there's something comforting about them.
It’s 2024 where is part 2?
Please!!! 🙏🏼
I don't know why Suicune looks the least like a cat to me, but now I can't unsee that it is absolutely a leopard.
Its head is a lot longer than a cat's, so that does give it the impression of being a dog or even a deer head more so than any feline.
Now that we know it's based loosely on a leopard, though, it's easier to focus more on the body rather than the head to see it is indeed more cat-like.
@@christiancinnabars1402 Thank you for putting my thoughts into words.
Imagining Mew as basically Soldier Boy from The Boys saying
"You're just a cheap fucking knockoff" has me entertained lol
Always waiting for this kind of videos!!
Mew is a cook???
In my head I’ve always grouped Celebi with Ho-oh and Lugia as the 3rd Legendary in a trio, so it’s nice to hear I’m not the only one!
You guys never stop making amazing content. Thank you for what you do for pokemon knowledge 🤘
The era of Gen 2 continues to be endlessly fascinating. The designs, development, and lore
I would love to see a video about the origins of almost every starter design and concept
I really appreciate the detail in this video. Thanks for sharing!
@ OF COURSE THERE'S A LEGENDARY POKEMON NO ONE HAS EVER EVEN HEARD OF HIDING UNDER THAT PICKUP TRUCK BRO
“Gretchen, stop trying to make “Time Trio” a thing.” 😂
Great video. Love your channel.
To be fair, I could understand Mewtwo being very angry about losing to Ash and wanting revenge considering Ash's track record before the Sun/Moon anime
Love these videos so much. Much gratitude to everyone involved for all the effort!
Mewtwo: "I'm The Phantom of the Opera of Batman."
"He wrote Mewtwo to basically be a Pokemon version of the Phantom of the Opera".
.... Suddenly my love for both characters makes a ton of sense.
“Legendary Pokémon” ah short and sweet
The chuckle at zapdos having 6 toes haha
Love the little laugh that wasn't cut near 6:23. "Like, really? Zapdos's feet were changed?"
6:15 - Why is my man laughing at Zapdos like that?
You must be wild and unpredictable to hide under a truck.
Mew's under the truck, right....
Great analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
6:39 The biggest improvement in this comparison has to be Ditto. I shudder to think what Grimer and Muk looked like.
The Trivia on the triangle island is actually great to see in a Pokemon video
Tbh the whole debate abt the legendary beasts is really silly, BUT even if they're ambiguous who could look at raikou and say "that's a dog" 💀
DYKG Pokemon vids make me feel some sort of way
Another great video that I totally watched all the way before commenting
I think everyone is missing how much cooler "primeval power" would be for an attack name
Heatran just got entirely skipped. That was the one I wanted to hear the mosh about. Hopefully there’s a part 3 that covers the weirder side legendaries.
It Dilaga and Palkia made universe with heatran
And that's about what I know interesting of it
Ye they skipped the original 4 regis, jirachi, and all gen 4 mythicals so I’m sure they’ll cover them soon too. Oh and cresselia.
@@ItzMeItzMe_ inb4 there is nothing worth talking about which is why they got skipped
This one was super interesting! Keep them going!
That description of Mew sounds a lot like Peter Pan. Which would make the climax of that first film a showdown between The Phantom of the Opera and Peter Pan.
This is next level. I didn’t know this about the original Pokémon movie.
*THEY ARE NOT CALLED LEGENDARY DOGS OR LEGENDARY CATS (THEY MAY BE CATS), THEY'RE CALLED LEGENDARY BEASTS!*
Hearing someone pronounce Raikou properly is genuinely so satisfying 😂
18:22 Guano. THEY HAVE GUANO!!!
Guano bowls. Collect the whole set.
Hella cool vid! Can't wait for part 2!
Pretty innovative of gen 2 to introduce the concept of time itself
An interesting trivia, in the manga Pokemon Adventures, the GS Ball that captures Celebi is also called the ball that captures time and is made from the Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing which have the effect of allowing people to act in the voids of time.
Technically 2022 is the Year of the _Water_ Tiger, so perhaps Suicune should’ve gotten some love as well… 💙
Fantastic video as usual. Great research & translating job.
The Kokopelli connection might've been dropped due to Johto being based on Japan, but I supposed that's never stopped them in other generations.
I love that the artist spent so much time on entei’s mustache
Honestly I pretty much nearly always saw Entei as a mix between a lion and a dog while Raikou was more Saber Tiger and Suicune more built like a canine...
2:42 Funnily enough, here in America those episodes DID air before the movie was released in theaters, so on our end their original plan to foreshadow Mewtwo worked out, albeit without the intended plot line.
Please make more of these did you know gamings for pokemon 🙏 so much interesting content hidden behind the Japanese language barrier
I learn so much history from DYKG ☺️
The story behind Birth Island is extremely intriguing.
