The weird thing about Yoshi's Cookie is that not only was it never released on the Wii U Virtual Console, but it was actually pulled from the original Wii Virtual Console just a few months after that sizzle reel trailer came out. It seems there was some legal trouble that prevented Nintendo from selling it anymore.

That’s a way to look at it. But it was a different world back then and multi platform games were pretty rare. The architecture of the pa1 and n64 were not similar. Even the controllers were very, very different in those days. Plus, the 3D platform market was pretty full on the n64 as opposed to pa1, where it was pretty wide open when croc came out.
It appeared to have a lot more to do with the fact that Nintendo and Argonaut decided to go separate ways, and the fact that Star Fox 2 (like Earthbound Zero before it on the NES) was cancelled because it was going to come out too close to the initially planned launch of the N64. That seems more accurate given the idea for the 3D platforming Yoshi game never progressed beyond pre-production planning and pitching stage (it would be petty to get angry at your co-developer/publisher for not giving the go-ahead for a project that had little work done on it). In fact, members of Argonaut who had worked with Nintendo like Dylan Cuthbert, who was one of the key developers of Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, and Star Fox 2, actually left Argonaut to work more closely with Nintendo and Sony (helping co-develop Blasto for the PS1), before founding Q-Games (which was responsible for Star Fox Command, Star Fox 64 3D, and a number of original titles like PixelJunk).

I love how Phillips weren't happy with companies work but then you look at the work they actually released and its mind-blowing 😂 those demos must have been terrible.
So during the N64 era, Miyamoto seems to be talking about having a playable demo of “Mario 64 2” that had a Mario & Luigi co-op mode, and then he suddenly just seemed to stop talking about it? Smash's violence is very cartoony and stylized, whereas the violence in Spikers from those demo animations seemed a little more brutal. Take Waluigi's stomp at 24:23. In Smash, Mario would've bounced away with smoke trailing behind him instead of just flopping back on the ground as if he's dead. But then again it could just be company bias.
Smash bros is just over the top cartoon violence where characters get launched across the stratosphere and blast off team rocket style. You can literally fight people with a stick and umbrella. Spikers looked to go for more psuedo-realistic wrestling vibe.

I really would’ve loved for Mario Kart 64 to have had more characters. It’d have been cool if Kamek was an unlockable character. 5:32 Nintendo was not exactly doing so hot in Europe. Makes me wonder what would’ve happened if they brought over the Famicom as is instead of the NES. 12:10 Croc and his cast could easily fit in the Mario universe Part of me thinks if Super Mario 64 2 came to be. It likely would’ve been ported to GameCube as to give players outside of Japan something to play while they worked on Sunshine.
"Nintendo disapproved of the project as they believed the violent gameplay did not match the company Code of Honor." I rolled my eyes really hard at that.

They reject ID Software’s Super Mario Bros 3 PC port because it wasn’t on their hardware, yet they permitted Hotel Mario for the CDI and the Mario Edutainment games for the MS-DOS (Mario is Missing for MS-DOS gave us the inspiration for Weegee). They also won’t have Sonic and Mario in a platformer together, but they will have Mario and Rabbids in a turn-based strategy game. They won’t allow for Wario Pool for the GBC, but they will allow Mario Pinball for the GBA. They did release Yoshi's Cookie on Virtual Console for the original Wii. I know this because when the Internet Channel was made free, those who had paid for the channel (myself included) were offered one free Virtual Console game of their choice as compensation, and that was the game I chose to get.
The only things that are left from co-op thing for Mario 64 are the assets for Luigi that seems to be more related to a late in development project since those were found in a iQue folder with SFX for future games like the Mario Advance series but other people says this dates from the beta development of the original Mario 64...
Could you (or anyone else) consider finding out what happened to the highly anticipated sequel to Kingdom Come, IceWallow Come? It looked downright incredible and extremely promising, and now it's like it never even existed.
In the style of their video a while back about whether Mario Party's dice are rigged, I'd love to see DYKG investigate the common claim that CPUs on higher difficulty settings get better rolls. People say that all the time, but personally I think it's just confirmation bias
Beginning of video: "...Nintendo declined it because they didn't want their IPs on non-Nintendo hardware." End of video, regarding Nintendo saying no Mario Kart on Tesla hardware: "...some had theorized that Nintendo said no because of safety reasons."
@@ChaseMC215 I believe it would mean like a driver losing control and hitting the Tesla user for bad injury or death even if the driver was drunk or high maybe even mentally ill
Could you imagine how much different Nintendo would be if they actually accepted third-party developers putting effort into things to put their most famous games on PCs? We probably wouldn't have Nintendo claiming that joycon drift doesn't exist, that's for sure.
Was it common that designers would build a whole game using someone else's IP and only get permission afterwards? That can't be how it's done these days.
Some fans do that nowadays. Though it rarely, if ever, pays off. Like those devs who made a whole remake of the first Mortal Kombat trilogy and then pitched the project to Netherrealm Studios/Warner Games, only for them to drag their feet and then say "no".
The Haunt game is definitely one of the weirdest entries. Honestly I like the combination of the Yoshi’s Island + Super Mario Sunshine artstyle, but it seems arbitrary to attach it to a Mario side character than just making an original franchise entirely. It’s like if Sega wanted to make a platformer with the Porcupo enemy from Super Mario Bros 2 instead of just making their own original blue hedgehog character, it seems absurdly risky to pitch an original game idea with an original art style and then try to loosely tie it to the Mario series for no reason. In fact, trying to tie in a Boo school that’s fighting off witches would only add more confusion and contradiction to the nightmare of the Mario canon, it would be easier to have it in a separate universe entirely. You wouldn’t even need to change the character designs, the Yoshi’s Island and Super Mario Sunshine designs for Boos haven’t been used in 26 and 19 years respectively, and no one is going to complain (or sue) that the ghost designs resemble the Boo designs that were specifically used in two games each and then never designed like that again. Also, I just realized how absurd it is that a game starring a Boo has been closer to getting their own game than Bowser, Daisy, and Waluigi ever have; at least the Boo game was pitched and had great concept art before it got scrapped, the latter ideas haven’t even been suggested!
Actually, a game like Haunt would probably do very well, with the increasing popularity of Boo that I've been seeing recently. Boo is a cute character, and this seems like a cute AU concept which I could see a lot of people getting hyped for. Especially since spooky/horror themes do really well in this day and age. That's just my opinion, though. I personally would have played it!
@@AmbrosiusAmaimon Though it's different, I see the complications that would arrive from OP's argument. Cuteness and character design is great for marketing, but those factors have very little to do with the flawed design concepts they were to utilize.

Such a comically anti-climatic end for Yoshi’s Cookie! XD
I like how the video shows Kevin Cloud and lists him as Adrian Carmack. Adrian is actually behind John Romero in the picture.
20:57 The tone shift to SeaMan.
Maybe it’s because I’m extremely tired or because I’m bored at work, but when you said “It never came out. Nobody knows why” in that deadpan tone it just made me crack up. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That cheered me up so thanks for that.
looking forward to the future episode covering the music play cartridge
They did release Yoshi's Cookie on Virtual Console for the original Wii. I know this because when the Internet Channel was made free, those who had paid for the channel (myself included) were offered one free Virtual Console game of their choice as compensation, and that was the game I chose to get.
The only things that are left from co-op thing for Mario 64 are the assets for Luigi that seems to be more related to a late in development project since those were found in a iQue folder with SFX for future games like the Mario Advance series but other people says this dates from the beta development of the original Mario 64...
As of October 15th, Mario Kart XXL Demo is now online and available to "play!"
Could you (or anyone else) consider finding out what happened to the highly anticipated sequel to Kingdom Come, IceWallow Come? It looked downright incredible and extremely promising, and now it's like it never even existed.
why
In the style of their video a while back about whether Mario Party's dice are rigged, I'd love to see DYKG investigate the common claim that CPUs on higher difficulty settings get better rolls. People say that all the time, but personally I think it's just confirmation bias
Beginning of video: "...Nintendo declined it because they didn't want their IPs on non-Nintendo hardware."
End of video, regarding Nintendo saying no Mario Kart on Tesla hardware: "...some had theorized that Nintendo said no because of safety reasons."
Safety reasons is bullshit because clearly the pitch says "whilst charging your Tesla", not "whilst driving your Tesla."
@@ChaseMC215 I believe it would mean like a driver losing control and hitting the Tesla user for bad injury or death even if the driver was drunk or high maybe even mentally ill
maybe because nintendo was different when the mario bros 3 port was done than now???, its not that more than 20 years has passed...
"It never came out. No one knows why." 🤣
Now I feel bad that Haunt never got to be released.
Don't be, the Star of David Boos and the Crucified Boos kinda doomed it from the start.
I like how the car making feature was reimagined when they made Mario Kart 7
Could you imagine how much different Nintendo would be if they actually accepted third-party developers putting effort into things to put their most famous games on PCs?
We probably wouldn't have Nintendo claiming that joycon drift doesn't exist, that's for sure.
Japanese corporate culture is the main culprit. Slaves to tradition, unfortunately.
Holy crap it's crazy how much that Wario Pool cutscene resembles what would eventually be cutscenes for the WarioWare series.
I like the way you pronounced "Seaman"
me too
A second backup game was also made with 2 original characters: Heavy and Metal - oh cool like Rock and Roll... hey wait a minute 🤔
I just can’t believe there was actually a game released called “3D Pocket Pool”
This video just made me realize just how many random developers have a total misunderstanding of what Nintendo wants to do with Mario
It was done so they could show a demo as an example to the company to help a pitch.
Haunt did have crucified boos. That probably had a hand in its cancellation.
@@primrosevale1995 Oh, I must have missed that detail, damn
@@AmbrosiusAmaimon They didn't include it in this video but they did show it in a previous video, where they called it a "Christmas Boo."
There was also a Star of David-shaped Boo that used a menorah as a weapon.
I love the art for the boo game so much. I would've bought that game and whatever hardware it came out on if it looked like that. So awesome.
10:03 Michael Borthwick (middle) and Howard Greenspan (right) look like Luigi And Mario 🤔
Why'd you say seaman like that? At 20:57
Instantly reminded me of the Super Best Friends
Everytime i look at that Mario Render from the SM64 2's Cartridge, i can't stop thinking about Mario demanding me to give him my liver
guess that’s why it was scrapped
I'm still very upset about the boo game being cancelled :(
Did you know? Mario will always be one of videogame's greatest legends!
Can't argue with that, but Sonic and Pac-Man are up there as well.
@@pacapprovedsomecrabmeatpacman isn't popular anymore
@@Disbanded9998 Yes he is, Pac-Man's a gaming icon, one of the reasons being that he was the first video game character to exist.
As a Rochestarian, always cool to hear about Strong Museum. The gaming section is so damn cool
Rochester gang!
@20:57 lol what is that change in tone :D
Super Mario 128 better not be here, cause Nintendo claimed to death that it was just a tech demo for the GameCube and yet fanboys still insist it was a real game 🤦♂️
So can we all agree that Wacky Worlds is actually incredible given what they could accomplish on CD-i hardware?
Nes Yoshi's Cookie never came out on the Wii U VC.
The Fans: ............... what?
“Am I the only one who cares about that?”
Damn, I always wanted a sequel to Mario Dance!
4:19 "A cracked version of the Apple II port [of Mario Bros] was leaked in the '80s."
Wow, so that version we played in school was never actually officially released.
Just imagine a first person shooter but with Mario characters….
1:39 i never thought i would see mario getting sturdy 💀
Yoshi's Cookie never releasing on WiiU must be Scott's paralysis demon
Huh, I never knew the Commander Keen games were based on a failed Mario clone. I grew up on those, even before I first played Mario.
It seems like most of these games are 3rd parties making demos with Mario characters and pitching them to Nintendo and then getting rejected.
At 16:29, the captions state, incorrectly, January 1997 but the audio correctly says December 1999.
Wow, for once DYKG didn't resort to sponsorship!
Wow, I never would have guessed that many Mario games got scrapped.
Great history! I guess they used the travel across U.S idea somewhat in the Odyssey game.
Also, is there a game like Race FX in N64? I could've sworn my mom bought it for me but for N64.
"We found this leak from 4chan with no reputable information and no playable roms which contains a mario shooter in isle delphino"
Quality journalism.
pro tip: if u REALLY want it "safely preserved" put it into the internet.
Leaving out games in the Donkey Kong franchise? Don’t they know it’s Donkey Kong December?
20:54 Also SimTower, Yoot Tower and the GBA port, The Tower SP.
I wouldn't be able to say "3D Pocket Pool" without laughing.
"Breathe into your DS to severely disturb your friends in Pictochat"
That Boo game would go over super hard today. I would definitely resurrect that idea Nintendo.
“ FOOTAGE BY RUclips USER ‘SNL’ “ I love that
Mario STRIKERS NEEDS TO MAKE A COMEBACK 💯💯💯
I am just disappointed New Super Mario & Sonic at the RPG Paper Mansion 64 2 for Nintendo Switch: Revolution - Nintendo Selects was canceled. :(
Good video, though.
