There's something endearing about 80s Mario, back when he was meant to be a character Nintendo could put into any situation. I suppose that's why there are so many Mario spinoffs, and I suppose turning Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game fits that mindset too.
And I And I will not have be able to in this situation to you in this situation as and how I am going to the happy happy days I am now back for a bit few days and before we went out back to bed the sun was will not have much time in bed for and a few weeks back to sleep with you you have can I wait until now so you should sleep ha zzz z ew, dc, c, ff, 22fv,2x,c,chc2hvc52v4,5,55f5vvvhvj,5vj2bjj,5 j, j, kkk, and o ko ko o k, lkkko o o o kkko klo. Mario is always a well thought out character today.
Well, it started off as a Mario game before it was reskinned for the licensing deal, so it was turned BACK into a Mario game in regions where the license didn't exist. The Japanese Mario 2 was developed later using a lot of cut content from the original Super Mario Bros around the time work on Super Mario Bros 3 began as they didn't want a different number in different regions.
@@khodexus4963 Not true, doki doki panic was always a licensed game, just always designed to be like a new Mario game. No idea where you got that idea of Mario 2J being made up of cut content from the first game, if anything it was an expansion on VS. super mario bros. Also, Mario 2J released a whole year before doki doki panic.
@@duncetheman Actually yes, it is a common misconception. Miyamoto himself talked about it in an interview where he explained that after the first game, they wanted to experiment with vertical scrolling, not just horizontal like the first game had. And you have to look at when they started development, not when they actually released. It took only a few months to develop SMB2J after the decision was made to reskin the work they'd done at that point for the new licensing deal due to all the asset recycling, whereas DDP took quite a bit longer since it required periodic consultation with the license holders.
The concept of All Night Nippon is actually insane when you think about it. Like imagine Nintendo nowadays releasing a ROM hack of Super Mario Odyssey themed around Joe Rogan
More like themed around NPR's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!", which as close as we have to All Night Nippon.
I want "Super Mario's Joe Rogan Experience" fuckin' immediately.
Instead of mushrooms, you collect DMT
Ur pfp makes me ashamed to be human
@@deadmemes9056 Says the one with only two videos on their channel that are both about blowing up a paraplegic... How much of an absolute monster do you even have to be?
14:04 Slight correction here, Mario Bros. Returns was the last Mario game published on the Famicom Disk System, not the Famicom as a whole.
Imagine if Nintendo remade Super Mario Bros Special as part of the Super Mario Advance series. People would’ve been thinking it was an original game until the internet became more used
someone did a rom hack of it recently
Technically it was the first in the advance line in a way
If they ever give it an official re-release or remake of some kind, I can see a trailer starting with "Which was the real sequel to Super Mario Bros.?" and comparing Lost Levels with the western SMB2, only to finally reveal Super Mario Bros. Special as the third challenger.
@@bloopa64 I’m guessing you got Super Mario Bros Special confused with Super Mario Bros Deluxe
Tbh I sooo wish we had a Super Mario Advance version of SMB1 and TLL. Super Mario Bros Deluxe is based off the ugly 8 bit version and has screen crunch, so yea if they made an Advance version instead it would've been awesome
I remember playing "Mario & Wario" as a kid. Loved that stretegic puzzle game and can't understand how that game was not released over seas (?)
It was so good. Or "Dr. Mario 64" never went released in Europe despite puzzle games always have been well recieved there.
I actually managed to find a guy on eBay selling carts of "Mario & Wario" that can play on US SNES systems without the need to use the mouse controller. It was pretty fun and interesting to say the least lol.
Well yes this was game freak in the 90s before pokemon yet great work in games like majong palace, pluseman,Jerry boys (jelly boys) and yoshi
@@rugalbernstein5913 Yeah there's a rom hack of the game that lets you control the mouse with the D pad and buttons. I think they just made a repo cart of that hack, pretty cool game
I find it interesting looking at some of this old art or costumes of characters like Mario and Bowser and how much they varied since the design for the characters had not yet been cemented.
Like how mega man was portrayed holding a gun, or how ridley had a weird tube mouth
15:20 From 1998 to 1989. That's some impressive time travel for a Nintendo contest.
yeah I had to rewind to hear that again.
Ah shoot i commented this but didn’t realize someone beat me to it! Lol
Timey wimey promotion indeed
1988 not 98
The story for Punchball Mario perfectly sums up the entire Mario series. Each game just begs the question, will these two ever learn about sophisticated culture?
Yeah, I love the _Punch Ball Mario Bros._ text-with due respect to the video, it's not "bizarre" itself, but sly wit with a slow burn about the scenario of modern-day tradesmen hopping their way to victory over sewer turtles, after that concept was established but before it became as globally familiar as Mickey Mouse
35:00 - Sylvanian Families is quite popular in Japan, being created by Epoch, the same toy company which brought us the Barcode Battler which itself had ties to a dozen or so Super Famicom games.
Sadly none of these games involve Super Mario, but a set of Super Mario World cards were released for the Barcode Battler II.
Nintendo and Epoch had a good relationship in the 1990s.
would be awesome if Nintendo could release a History of Mario Compilation with some, if not all these games...but alas that prob won't happen
That would be super cool 👍🏻
They are well known for hoarding their franchises often so it's unlikely to happen unless you are able to get the ROMs to download and play at least
Just got to say, I'm LOVING the more long-form content!
some of those Japan exclusive memorabilia are insane. i wish Nin still had contests like those today
I love the new format the channel was reinvented into so much! Thank you for all the work you put in your videos!
so everytime I hear about the Satellaview I think how it's timed and episodic format could work for our modern gaming landscape. like did anyone else enjoy 1vs100 on Xbox? it was so fun to join a weekly game like that.
That and Full House Poker were so fun.
I guess the limited time Mario 128 was the closest thing!
@@Dazuro You got Mario 35 and 128 confused, they do both involve several Marios though...
There is a reason why the Game and Watch Gallery games had Mario's Cement Factory changed to Mario's Cookie Factory in the Mario themed revisions of those classic G&W games.
They all related back to Yoshi loving Cookies almost as much as the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street.
I think its based off of Yoshi's Cookie for the SNES.
46:52 Mario is literally on the box art.
You found the joke, at long last. But what will you do with it?
30:19 is the ONLY time we get to see Peach's father at all.
HE'S A DOG???
Isn't he in the cartoons? I'm sure he made an appearance there
@@HUYI1You're probably thinking of the Valiant Comics series, which was partially based on the cartoons but also featured Peach's father as a prominent character. Fun fact, his design there is actually based on artwork for some obscure Japanese SMB1 strategy guide.
@@GuyWithThePie probably, but I hope younger peeps will still remember where mario came from regardless 😁😂
9:53 this sounds like an ai going on a weird ramble about human culture and history, breaking then turning in to Mario
The knitting experience is throwing me. Even before the times of cell phones and modern computers people could see the need to have this information present in more ways than just books. And it's actually pretty sophisticated for it being on the Famicon.
That sweater-knitting software should make a comeback.
Imagine just how popular that would be nowadays.
Thats a scam ignore it. “To acknowledge your prize” what? Just acknowledge a prize might exist? Not actually accept it? 😅😂😂
Super Mario 64 Shindo version was released in America, As a part of the 3D All Stars collection .
What's the difference between both versions?
@@HUYI1 Rumble Pack support and glitch fixes as well as an Easter egg at the start
1:56 Technically we did get this version, since the 3D All-Stars port was based on it.
Not really. BS Super Mario USA actually had the same maps. but after some time, you may get invincibility, character swap, or obstacles made by enemies which are enemy attacks. AND, you only have a limited amount of time to complete the game, idk.
@@EnlightenmentCSS3 i dont rmemember that in mario 64
As a long time Mario fan and someone who’s spent years on the Mario wiki, how’d I never know some of these games?!
Happy Birthday to Charles Martinet! 😊
At 27:30 the woman makes the same exact gesture than Koizumi does on Directs lmaooo
It's a cool day when DidYouKnowGaming uploads content that is for sure.
I think Mario and Wario inspired the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games from 2 and onward, where the Mini Marios must be guided through a stage. I'd have preferred if they made a Mario & Wario series instead for that type of gameplay, and kept Mario vs. Donkey Kong with the gameplay of the GB and GBA games.
Absolutely going to be that person for a minute: at 3:24, when you showed that clip from "I Am a Teacher: Teami no Kiso" and said, "which actually teaches players how to knit", you showed an image of a crochet tutorial. Crochet is done with one hook, knitting is done with two or more needles.
I paused the video just to say that as well, so you're not the only 'that person'
Yeah, that was a "wait what" from me, too
Punchball Mario Bros' plot sounds like Kojima's first draft of death stranding. It is one sentence away from pontificating on the most significant of humanity's tools, the rope (strand).
You were born in 1986 and were 35 when you made this RUclips profile?
59:58 Wow, that's extremely similar to what happened with Sega about 5 years before. The Japanese really don't like any ideas coming from Americans apparently. It's there way or the highway. If only different countries could learn to work together for the greater good, imagine all the truly amazing things that we could see happen.
The Japanese are fairly notorious for their inferiority complex when it comes to ideas and the possibility of being shown up.
This is a people that once thought they were the most advanced and cultured nation in the world (hilariously enough while keeping themselves isolated and thereby ignorant of changes in the wider world), until American Naval Commodore Perry showed up with his then modern armored ironclad steam frigates with paddlewheel propulsion and sporting modern explosive shell cannons in the 1850s, and the most advanced thing the Japanese had were basically wooden sailing galleons from the 15th century.
@@GreyWolfLeaderTW A helluva lot of time has gone by since then. They need to get over that shit. I have huge respect for the Japanese people, but I have zero respect for that particular trait. All that way of thinking does is hold us back in a major way. It's idiotic.
Xenophobia is a bitch.
15:22
Weird that a promotions goes back 11 years
Pretty wild being able to travel to 1989 in 1998 to take advantage of the promotion there
There was a bootleg of those first two Famicom computer games on AOL Shareware! I played them on an old Geoworks DOS PC when I was four.
This video is phenomenal! I’m really excited for this new format going forward. I’ve been watching since 2014, and I’m glad to see the channel still going strong.
The way he says Yoshi, damn it, lol.
It’s the inconsistency that bothers me. He is English and pronounces Yoshi the way most English people would yet he is pronouncing Mario the way Americans do, with an au sound, which sounds awful with an English accent. Had to stop watching as it bothered me so much
Nintendo was actually generous to the fans when it ccomes to giving prizes. Too bad that they now give just store credit.
"America," huh? Does this include South America? Probably not, just the United States.
Booo hooo
SOPA DE MACACO
“Mario & Wario” is really worth picking up if you’ve never tried it. Like the man says, it’s all in English, so there’s no language barrier. It’s also pretty cheap, and you’ve got a few options for getting it to run on a North American SNES. If you’d rather go the emulation route, ZSNES (and probably other emulators) has mouse support. I really wish Nintendo would just add the mouse games to NSO. The Switch dock already has USB ports, all it would take is a software update to get it to work with off-the-shelf mice.
A big problem with ZSNES is that it hasn't been updated in over a decade, though. That's why its recommendation has been lessened for others like Snes9x.
@@GabePuratekuta I haven’t been using ANY emulator for a long time, I just mentioned ZNES because I knew off the top of my head that it has mouse support. At any rate, it’s good enough to run “Mario Paint” and “Mario & Wario”.
@@TBustah I know. But there are still games it can't run without being heavily modified, like the first Star Ocean.
WHAT? Nintendo didn't copyright strike All Nippon Radio for putting lyrics to the Mario theme song!? 😱😱
Nintendo:Here's some remixed versions of old games
Satellaview subscribers:We're paying subscription fees for this?
Game historians:*Fascinating*
".. with the promotion running from November of 1998 to May 1989."
Man, I know Nintendo likes to innovate, but having to figure out time travel to participate in a contest seems a bit too far.
Unless there's a cross-language pun (since "kame" means "turtle" and can change pronunciation to "game" in compounds), it's just the English words "Same Game", not サメガメ, as that is the name of the game where you select a group of contiguous same-color blocks to be removed.
I didn't catch it before, but I think you're right that it is a pun. Nice catch!
The cartridge (25:25) shown right before the title screen you're referring to (25:31) has the full game title 「UNDAKE 30 鮫亀大作戦 - マリオバージョン」. The "鮫亀" is indeed pronounced サメガメ. I've never personally heard the term "same game" for matching games in English, but it lines up for a nice bit of wordplay that I don't believe was accidental.
Glad someone else commented this before me having to try to figure out how to explain it...
Play at 1.25 playback speed. Thank me later.
This is awesome, it’s like a 50 minute episode of Region Locked. Keep up the good work DYKG
Well, that clears the mystery of the Mario with the bucket on his head, so many years wondering the meaning of that line in Pokemon
I legit forgot that reference existed.
Happy birthday to Charles Martinet!!
You give iconic voices for many beloved characters!
15:20 - That date range doesn't sound correct? 1998 - 1989? Assuming this is just a mis-reading of the script
Yeah, Somethings wrong here, So it says 1989 at the end, Which is less than 1998, so yeah, DidYouKnowGaming made a small oopsie.
Seeing as how much I love puzzle games I would have begged for that GameCube puzzle pack near the ned of the video. Also it's called Puzzle League not Tetris Attack anymore. Not even sure why they were allowed to use the Tetris name in the first place.
“This one actually shows you how to knit”
Proceeds to show us crocheting 😅😂😂
15:19 You said the premutation ran from November 1998 to May 1989. Was this a simple mistake, or was there time travel involved?
I was looking for someone else to mention this😂
As someone who only recently got into Picross, I’m sad that there was one that we didn’t get ☹️
I feel the same about the sewing machine, my kid self would have loved that, I remember getting a sewing machine and Gameboy for my birthday too 🙂🙂
6:40 they can't keep getting away with it
Holy crap! i remember those Nagatanien Mario ochazuke/furikake packs from the mid-80's. They're actually pretty tasty. (i still buy that company's chazuke products today)
Missed opportunity for Nintendo to not reboot the Mario artist series for Wii U when they had the chance...
Definitely love the direction the channel is taking!!
too bad us westerners never got to play "i am a teacher! super mario sweater"
No, I think we dodged a bullet bill there.
41:05 Finally, Yamauchi's proto-Mii
49:32 "a thing of the past" pff, tell that to Buddy Mission Bond on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo still hasn't localized that.
It's always weird to see games that are fully (or nearly) in English when it's meant only for the Japanese region.
I think English is the closest thing we have to a universal language
@@alchemistofsteel8099 Even stranger since there are far more native Chinese speakers.
"Yaw-Shee" is a 100% valid pronounciation btw
Ok it is mind-blowing that some of these entries are ones most have never heard of before. Well done once again
15:21 - I'm a little confused at this part. Here, it's said that the promotion ran from November 1998 to May 1989. Was this supposed to say May of 1998 to November of 1998?
5:47 Eh, I'll take "Western Show on Super Mario World" over this any day.
LET'S DO THE MARIO, ALL TOGETHER NOW
Umm Yoshi’s cookie came out on SNES though
Yes, different yoshis cookie game
if i had a dollar for every time i heard about the mario 2 reskin, id... still be broke and in crippling debt, thanks to inflation.
I could listen to video game facts for hours.
I liked the video BUT:
DYKG should use some sort of pronunciation guide for their VO artists. "Kaetta kita" doesn't sound like "cat-uh keet-uh," the "teami" in the knitting game is not pronounced "tee mee," etc.
It's like hearing Peggy Hill "speaking" Spanish, it hurts.
Also 15:34 isn't advertising Super Mario Bros. 3 the Famicom game, it's advertising the Super Mario Bros. 3 branded *rice topping* (furikake). I'm guessing the script was finished without any on-screen text being translated. Pretty large oversight for a video about Japanese-only things to leave out the Japanese part.
There are so many titles available just in Japan, like the Nintendo Power I found that concept very interesting. Another game that I also found interesting is mobile golf which you gotta use use the mobile adapter
gb
If only the N64 DD could incorporate up to 128 megabytes of storage instead of 64 megabytes, things could've been a bit more expansive. Then again, the same could be said if the N64 cartridges could go up to as high as 128 megabytes, things would've been just as expansive!
So I heard "Sah-Mey Gah-Mey" and I had to do a double take. Either I'm overthinking the title, or it's just a simple overpronuciation of "Same game"
Japanese titles can be whack- Oh and love the video! Doing great!
Wrecking Crew 98 was added to the Nintendo Switch online recently so it can be taken off the Japan exclusive list.
Some pretty interesting stuff there, I think the Mario Excitebike is pretty cool but a lot of that stuff isn’t really that interesting to me, alternate levels to the games we did get would be pretty cool though
God this makes me want to binge region locked again for the 1000th time I'm not kidding, that's how I found the channel and instantly subbed please keep doing videos like this and all the other well researched content you put out!
the fact that the satellaview even existed is fucking insane.
it's like a precursor to live service games.
And it looks like it had less lag than the services today
Pretty much.
I'm surprised no one knew about the satellaview, especially with the exclusive Zelda release too
@@HUYI1 Enough knew about it to make both into full games.
Actually America got the Shindo version of Super Mario 64 through Super Mario 3D All Stars
great job
I really wish Nintendo would have ported that Excitebike Satellaview game to anything else.
I guess that one course in Mario Kart 8 is as close as we'll ever get.
I think everyone wants ports of _all_ the Satellaview games.
Nintendo gave out some really cool stuff in those early days.
45:20 Wait. So if Yoshi's cookie has never been brought over to the west in any way what / how were Arin and Dan playing on game grumps all those years back?
I assume they mean that particular version of Yoshi's Cookie, since the one in the collection is a remake.
Thr NES version is the only one that didn't get ported.
yea that confused me, because the way it was phrased there made it seem like it was an entirely new game, except Yoshi's Cookie was a game for the NES. It's a remake.
My PC and Microwave and i think other stuff too are from sharp. I really like sharp i have no problems at all with the stuff they make :D It's also not to expensive.
No ones exactly foaming at the mouth to play an american version of "super mario sweater"
Kid version of Photoshop? So basically kidpix?
Damn y’all love doing Nintendo videos
I remember a weird Japan only Mario 2 continuation that I found while browsing the Mario wiki
Do you mean BS Mario USA for the Super Famicom Satellaview Add-on? Its downloadable, which was kinda weird in the 90's (probably 80's) And Downloading was not since 16 year olds invented it.
@@EnlightenmentCSS3 I think

Crochet = 1 hook
15:18 "With the promotion running from (...) 1998 to (...) 1989"
That makes sense to me...
The completely mispronounced Japanese is always very funny. Thank you. Keep it up.
9:50 excuse me.......WHAT?
Pikachus face looks like a spider... 22:21
I have a very weird fascination with Super Mario Bros. Special. It does a lot of unique things with the tilesets and level design that you don't get in the NES/FDS games. It made me greatly appreciate the creativity at hand and made me look forward to all the efforts that went into bringing Special into various other formats that are more capable of running a platformer: the NES conversions, Super Mario Bros. Crossover, Mari0, and even Super Mario Maker.
A thing about the scrolling: If you look at footage of the PC-88 version of Super Mario Bros. Special running on original hardware, it loads in the next screen, tile by tile, from the left to the right, before spawning you and the other entities. Most emulators don't replicate this and simply fade the entire screen to black.
Interesting, I wonder if the emulator authors don't know about that behavior?
Y’all’s videos are a happy place for me. Just incredibly calming
GOD SAME
You should watch console restoration ASMR videos. Now those are calming.
I'm surprised at the fact you guys never did a video in any witcher game.
Leaving a comment so it reaches more people
You say "Satoshi" correctly, but not "Yoshi." Why? It's the same sound: "oh-shee." It would only be pronounced as you say it if it were spelled "Yashi."
Likewise, "Undake" is not pronounced "Oon-da-kee," it's "Oon-dah-keh."
The "Bun Bun" in Excitebike Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium" is pronounced "Boon Boon," not "Buhn Buhn."
4:52 This is suspiciously similar to Doki Doki Panic, is it just me?
Why can't you pronounce "yoshi"
