  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is often called one of the best game of all time, and I would agree with that statement. I have been playing Ocarina of Time ever since I was just a kid. When a game is 24 years old, a questions gets raised: What is the best way to play this game today?
In this video, I will be comparing every single way to play Ocarina of Time, and try to rank them from best to worst. I go over every official AND unofficial way to play.

For the issue regarding the 8 directions when using the analog stick on Citra, you need to use the setting "set analong stick" that way it'll allow you to use the full 360 range of movement. Otherwise, you'll get exactly what you did, the clunky weird feeling and clearly visible restriction to a set 8 directions. Hope that helps and this was a great video!

I wanna add to this because when setting up the analog stick you might also find yourself moving very slowly, as if the controller is not picking up the entire range of the joystick. While I'm not sure what causes this, if you open citra through adding it to steam, it gets resolved and it becomes a surprisingly smooth experience.

I got my N64 controller for the Switch yesterday, and immediately jumped in to this game. It took a bit for me to get used to that controller again, but it feels exactly like I remember from nearly 25 years ago. I'm really satisfied with this version. It feels like getting a hold of the unaltered copies of Star Wars. If you were a kid in the 90s and loved this game, I highly recommend grabbing that controller and revisiting this game.

I wish the N64 NSO games had a CRT filter, but I suppose it might be a little processor intensive for the old Switch hardware. Makes me wonder if using an emulator on PC with the NSO N64 controller might be the way to go, can have all the filters, and all the games.

My first time playing this game was on the 3DS remake, it was great fun. I’m replaying it rn on NSO with the 64 controller, and I have to say I still really enjoy it. They’ve ironed out most of the kinks with the emulation, and while I agree that it’s disappointing it took Nintendo so long to get it right, I do think now that they have gotten it right it should be given a bit more credit. It’s an enjoyable way to play OoT in my opinion.

I got the bonus disk with Mario Kart Double Dash
For a new player, the way that the 3DS version handles the Jabu Jabu fish is absolutely fantastic compared to the original. Before that point in the game you're given no indication that you can freeform catch things in bottles by using it with the environment. In the 3DS version some NPC dialogue is updated to give some nudges to try it. It also adds a camera pan in the water temple to indicate the existence of the hole under the central shaft - the main reason why people miss that key is simply not knowing that they unlocked that door and it's consistent with other Zelda unlocks to pan to the thing you opened. Those two fixes make OoT 3D the only freeform puzzle game I have ever played with no moon logic required at all.

Ironically even though the wiiu was last on his list it’s my preferred method of playing oot, with a modded wiiu you can get the GameCube releases to run and look pretty well since the wiiu uses hdmi and with a GameCube controller adapter I had a comfortable time playing the whole game on it and having the option to play it on the game pad was also a plus. Having the master quest is also a very nice bonus and gives me a reason to replay the game right after finishing the base game. The pc port can also run on the Wii U, I haven’t personally been able to get it to run but if the GameCube versions of the game aren’t for you the ship of harkinian ports should fix those issues and I’ve heard they’ve been able to get the master quest to work as well.

My first playthrough of OoT was on the 3DS about 10 years ago. I have always tried to avoid guides, but the Sheikah Statues were pretty great. Having Gyroscope for the shooting minigames, the boots as regular items, and greatly detailed backgrounds was amazing. About a year ago I replayed it on the Wii VC, and it was pretty neat! I used my Wavebird controller, and it was such a great experience.
I want to see what can be done with the PC port. I would love to play with the 3DS models and textures (or at least reworks on them), and with better FPS and higher resolution. If we ever get free camera movement and RTX it would definitively be the best OoT experience.
It's a shame the Wii U and Switch ports were so bad compared to the rest. Input lag and lack of dedication killed an amazing game for those consoles (at least on their first release).

The citra 3ds remake is what I believe has now been discovered that you can play it with this on a steam deck which I really want to try. I’m gonna do a little more research on it before buying a steam deck just for this though since you said it may have a few issues. Although this is probably the best way to play it using citra since the steam deck allows you to play it using 2 screens. Also I played the virtual console version on a Wii U before and I thought the controls were terrible on the game pad as much as I love the Wii U. I’m sure it’s much better playing it with a gamecube controller on the original Wii. Also I wanna try the pc port one. I think I’ll do that very soon cause I have a crappy pc that it’s playable on haha.

I absolute love the work they done with Ship of Harkinian, it is really good to play and there are a ton of options to choose. The Nswitch version did't work great for me, but i think that it still better than the online version. I usually play with both the Ship and with Retroarch or on my N64. On the N64 i play for the feeling, on Retroarch i play because of some randomizer configurations that the ship don't have, but the ship is far off on the lead of the best way to play it in my opinion. I use an nintendo 64 controller adapter to play it on PC, but i think that a GC controller would work great too.

Using a modded GameCube I ran the Zelda collection with widescreen hacks and It looks stunning

First off, thanks for watching! I also played the gamecube version on a modded gamecube (swiss) and realised there was a widescreen patch, but I wasn't sure if it worked well throught the entire game (lag and clipping wise) and I know not everyone has the ability to get swiss, as it is not free to mod your gamecube, while it is free on say the Wii. Thanks for letting me and other people who read your comment know :)
When I talk about emulation errors, I'm mostly talking about texture inaccuracies. There is some slight artifacting on the buttons, and the pause menu. Pausing has a longer delay compared to other versions and it looks like its rendered in lower quality (compared to the wii for instance). Nothing game breaking and not everyone will notice, but personally I did notice

@@ultracreed3080 the only thing that is crappy on the widescreen patch (at least on Wii Nintendont) is that the prerendered 2D backgrounds are 4/3 stretched, so it messes slightly with Link screen position.
And the on-screen icons also appear 4/3 stretched apart from A action button icon.
Texts as well but this is almost unnoticeable, you really get used to stretched font.

IMO the best way to play is either on the 3ds, or the Nintendo switch online expansion pack they have for n64. If u want classic n64 look or just don’t have a 3ds then I do recommend Nintendo switch online. Or if your just broke then emulators, specifically ones on pc (or on the delta app for App Store work too if u connect controller) are great, free options. Pc allows for more customization in your emulation while mobile is a bit more streamlined especially on iOS. Hope this helps!

Love all the options. One thing that is important to me is fast-forward on emulation, which N64 emulators do well now. With all of the dialog and back and forth early in the game, setting FF to a shoulder button makes the game much less tedious. My current favorite is M64plus on Android upscaled and in widescreen. Can't wait to try the Ship of Harkinian and 3ds options though.
