    I think there's 2 option to play this game, or the n64 version(doesn't matter if gamecube or wii u or switch not to mention the 64 og) the only thing about the switch version that it bothers me( and apply to all games in the service) is the lack of remap the controllers in the app, and the 3ds citra version just applying the project restoration quality of life and is perfect.
    p.s: with the n64 switch online you can remove that bar on the bottom just switching off the "show controls in game" option in the settings of the n64 app.

      I haven't used the Majora's Mask version of the texture pack yet, but looking at the OoT textures, it is very obvious in places where Henriko used AI-upscaling, creating it's distinctive muddy textures and poor tiling. I think putting Gamecube at #9 behind WiiU #8 is a little misleading. I know you mention that modding weighs into the ranking, but the WiiU's input lag and dark filter really are terrible and that really should weigh it lower. I grew up playing the gamecube version with a Wavebird, which forced the rumble to be off every time which allowed me to play through it countless times with no functional issues. Sure, visually there may be a difference in the fog and a few models loading strangely, but none of it takes away from your emergence. I highly doubt I would have fallen in love with this game as easily had I started playing on it with my WiiU.
    Other than that, this is an informative video. I appreciate the consideration for controller options mentioned throughout the ranks.
    Edit: I want to add that in my opinion, the bright feel of the 3DS remake is inferior to the original. It's good, but does not capture what the one from the 90's created. Also, I personally do not like Nerrel's texture pack for the Dolphin Emulator, as they look too polished and lifeless. I'm sure he worked very hard on them thought so I'm glad others enjoy it, as I am probably in the minority with this opinion.

    The reason why the WiiU version feels like it has a dark filter over the visuals is because there literally is a dark filter over the visuals. If you have a modded console, you can manually remove it from the package, but you still have to deal with the horrible input lag. I would only recommend this option for an easy way of legally obtaining the ROM file for use in Project64 or something like that.

    For me, when it comes to retro games, the best way to play them is usually on their original consoles. I can play them on more modern hardware and even have a blast with it, but there’s usually a nagging feeling that the game doesn’t belong on the system. I’ve seen too many stories where younger players don’t understand the appeal of some classic games but when they play them on their original consoles, the games suddenly “makes sense” to them.

    • @nycz4411
      @nycz4411 2 года назад

      True it's because of emulation imo also controlls may be weird on keyboard. But try the oot port for PC it feels very smooth and you can play at 144fps (it's not that stable but it worked for me until now). Majora's mask is my fav game but they aren't done with decompilation yet so prolly another year of waiting before a pc port can be expected

    • @LITTLE1994
      @LITTLE1994 2 года назад

      Facts. Original hardware (and CRT TV) is the TRUE way to play old games.

    • @nycz4411
      @nycz4411 2 года назад +1

      @Nirmal Santhosh Parthipan yes emulation is important but imao decompilation and porting to pc is even better the zelda oot and sm64 ports run perfectly on modern hardware through that

    • @zainshaikh527
      @zainshaikh527 Год назад

      That can be solved by just understanding the requirements for hardware.
      The display tech can matter for older titles but that's only for 2d games from the CRT era. Newer games from the past few years require alot. hdr, vrr, low latency lcds with capabilities for high refresh rate panels. If you're playing a shooter or a fighting game, higher ups and low latency is always the way over anything else since day one. And CRTs had none in comparison to LCD technology.
      Then you must play on a controller that compliments or can be moved to fit the feel of the console. That's literally the biggest indicator of a great game. Playing red dead on a modern Xbox or to slightly lower degree ps controller shows that's the only way. Some have pros and cons, some have toe ways to experience the game equally. Like alan wake. With the mouse taking advantage of the incredible shooting mechanics of remedy games but the 360 controller having the flashlight beam control down right with the triggers. Another example ocarina of time. Both N64 and 3ds version play different and we'll in their own right and better be played with the respective requirements. One needing the three grip classic, and the latter requiring a touch screen, played as a handheld and has gyroscopic controls.
      Third is audio. If the game has surround sound, you better have it. Some are cinematic and need to be in a 5.1 channel enclosed space. Some do better with a reference grade headphone like overwatch since they have a dialed down virtual surround and you'll be at the desk anyway and need to solely focus on subtle but not so subtle audio queues to react. Otherwise you might as well be blind and deaf.
      The appropriate audio can make you feel like you're in a crowded subway or school. Or hear someone walk up to you or place them above you and when they come in or out of your room into another.
      Even something like persona 5, that's great on all offerings does much better with a PS controller just because of the layout and wideness of it. It's got that SNES shape and using the offset joysticks of an xbox throw it off just a tad out of place in comparison. Not gonna talk about insta broken and shit ergonomics controllers like the switch since they are always better swapped for by better third party ones.
      I recommend the sn30 pro, Xbox elite controller 2, the last rendition of the micro USB Xbox controller (it's back grips and taper up top is a good trade for it's bad bumpers on titles when you're playing something slower and single player or a mainly PS title on the Xbox), and a light weight mouse (,under 40 grams) with wireless dongle receiver (don't play on a Bluetooth mouse and playing without a wire is one way route. You can't go back to a wire even if it is super flexible and light)

    • @zainshaikh527
      @zainshaikh527 Год назад

      Please ask and tag me in questions if I didn't make sense to you.
      Playing a game or watching media the right way is more crucial than knowing every inch of the media in a shody or layman way since you never experienced the creator and writer's intention. It's like eating or using cinnamon from the Americas when you need to cook an Asian dish or vice versa.
      Movies and TV are worse just because of price of trash certification for display technologies and thestres being poorly maintained or never set up right to begin with. Then you have to hunt down the place.
      If it's an older movie or one that came out even yesterday but recorded in film, you're gonna have to be lucky and race to get a much more expensive seat at the cinema.
      IMAX has such a broad difference in what it means and every other certification and title is just as useless. At home and audio certifications and standards are alot more solid and share the same requirements and meaning as for video games.

    I played trough Majora's mask on Project 64 with Nerrel's texture pack and on my 3ds. In my opinion, I enjoy every way of playing this game, I enjoy it that much. Sure the remake has flaws but it also improved some things. But of course project restoration is very good and I especially enjoy the old Zora swimming. But the virtual console versions have many issues indeed, the Wii one is the best virtual console version. And I also think the release of Majora's Mask on switch was WAY better than the Ocarina Of Time release on switch because that version has way too many launch issues.
    And thankfully, the remake isn't plagued by Dutch translation because some of my favorite games get ruined by crappy translation.

      @@jayq4374They're emulators on pc. They're like apps that try to replicate the console's hardware to play the games on pc. And they also use the capabilities of your pc so you can make the resolution look better or make the visuals of the game look better and many other enhancements. Project 64 emulates Nintendo 64 on your pc, and Citra emulates 3DS on your pc.
      And you should know that it's kind of illegal to play games on them since you're not buying them and are just downloading pirated copies of them online. What you could do is actually buy one of the games and then somehow make a file from them on your pc (that's called dumping) to play them on the emulators. But I don't blame you if you don't. 3DS and especially N64 games are ridiculously overpriced today. And good luck even finding them 😂. Nintendo won't come for you if you download the games online. That don't even make most of these games available today so make of that what you will.
      And as you can see, consoles can also emulate games. But it's restricted to how powerful they are and if they can run older games smoothly. And you can see that some have better emulation than others from this video.

      @@jayq4374Both are pc emulators that emulate a gaming console. Project64 emulates the N64, and Citra emulated a Nintendo 3DS. If you have any decent computer, 64 should work. Citra requires a computer that’s a bit stronger.
      Then, just find a rom online of the game (either N64 or 3DS depending on what emulator you use, and you’re done! Hope this helps!

    I believe the best way to play is on 3DS after installing the Project Restoration.

  • @raven.4815
    @raven.4815 2 года назад

    Imo, the 2 best ways to play it are either 3DS or Switch, why? Simply put, the 3DS version (even vanilla) has a lot of new QoL features + the improved graphics and portability, there's a patch out there which, if you install it, will make it the best way possible (until now) to play it, do some research before installing it though.
    As for the Switch version, I think the possibility of playing on the go AND TV makes it great, plus, if you liked the OG art style then I'm think you'll be satisfied enough; expanding a little bit more, if you're worried about not having the sheets for the ocarina's songs, you can just take a screenshot and voila! And that also applies to important tips, quests, events, etc. so no need to use an online guide to finish it, also, may I add, you can use savestates, which could be a key element for complex dungeons, or even for those who are usually busy... all good and dream-like but I tell you, this port is literally a 1:1 port of the OG N64 version, so no new QoL features and improved graphics (asides the resolution) and no gyro controls as well (which they're a HUGE plus for the 3DS version).
    I'd go for the 3DS version + patch, but if you don't have a 3DS or can't emulate it, you can't go wrong with the Switch port, just keep in mind that you're playing a 22 year old game (with no new features added)!
    Apologies for my mediocre English, I'm not native.

    Hey just a tip you can actually mix and match textures from both nerrel's and henriko's texture packs and you can basically make your own "ultimate texture pack" by doing this
    Just use the textures you like most from both packs and you're golden
    Edit: also you can remove the little black bar in the switch version by going in to the n64 apps settings and finding "show controls in game" just uncheck that box and it should remove the black bar at the bottom you can't remove the borders om the side though:(

      That was the main reason I didn't get it back when it came out on Wii VC. After learning that it's a timeloop and you don't actually need to do everything within the 3 in-game days, it became a lot easier to convince myself to play it. (Though I still remember a moment when I was fighting Twinmold without knowing how, with my battery running low and the timer running out, _and_ my parents wanting me to put it away since we were at someone else's place. That was pretty stressful.)

    Haven't played Majora in any way but I got three ways to play it:
    The GC disc (4 Zelda games) on Wii
    The 3DS version
    NSO Exp Pack - N64
    A few days ago I bought that original GC controller (Super Smash Bros edition) so I can play the GC version of Majora (and Ocarina) on my Wii. My old controller from 2002 got problems with the Dpad so that's not fun :(
    Not sure if I wanna mod my 3DS. I always prefer to play "vanilla" versions of games.
    Love this kind of videos! Hope for even more videos like this soon again!
    When looking at what the guys outside Nintendo can do to make these games even better, just imagine if Nintendo can do something similar or even better for Switch. But I got so low expectations because of Switch Online and the included retro machines... I mean why release some N64 games for Switch when the games are there on NSO? Also, they need to focus on future games like "BotW 2".
