R.I.P Rick May "Never Give up, trust your instints." In Star Fox "I have done nothing but teleporting bread for 3 days." In Team Fortress 2 *You were good son, maybe even the best.*
Extra fun fact: on the same Miyamoto interview found on the Star Fox 64 strategy guide , Miyamoto did admit that originally Star Fox 64 was gonna have the Walker transformation from Star Fox 2. But the development team hated the idea, so Miyamoto compromised with the Landmaster tank and Blue Marine sub.
The walker was great. It allowed the switch from in air to on ground combat with out having that awkward phase of having the characters physically outside the ship like in Assault.
Am I really the only one who likes the landmaster? Sure, it doesn't make much sense plotwise, but I still liked both Titania and Macbeth (Specially Macbeth), and Aquas' problem wasn't the blue marine to me... just the fact that I can't see anything down there.
What Peppy said is the equivalent of "This reminds me of the old days!" like, the days he was battling enemies along side Fox's father. In that expression the 10 year thing doesn't necessarily need to relate anything specific. There is another expression in Japanese which is "jyu nen hayai." Literally it says "you are 10 years early" but really it just means you are still new or inexperienced. Source: I have lived in Japan for over 10 years and have to decipher certain expressions myself from time to time.
Hey guys, The Lylat Wars name change is completely different to the reason why Star Fox was renamed StarWing in Europe! Otherwise the game would be called Starwing 64 :)
Redhotsmasher A ZX Spectrum game, yeah, that story is so muddled, no one can actually say which one is true, though I lean towards the speccy one as no one could legally claim Star Vox is the same thing as Star Fox.
I remember the first (and only) time I had the chance to visit Europe, I came across a local videogame shop in a small town in Spain and saw a "Lylat Wars" cartrigde, and it blew my mind! I had no idea about the name change, I was so impressed, the guy gave me a chance to take a photo of it! I was sooooo close on buying it, but was short on money though but got a nice bargain on an SNES Asterix game. On a side note: Big fan of your videos, greets from México! =D
I love Star Fox! Star Fox 64 3D helped me get through a lot of hardships, (no punn intended) and the game brings a smile to my face every time I play a Star Fox game!
StarFox 64's graphics may be outdated, but I still find them extremely cutting edge in general. Specifically, I'm speaking more about the amount of details the developers put in the textures and and other effects to set the mood of the environments. Compared to the original game, StarFox 64 is mind blowing.
Don't forget the 3DS remake made everything have even more detail and the 3D is awesome for Aquas and a few other levels. Also the music is enhanced from MIDI to MP3
Oh man the way the dual laser thingies under the arwing opening up after grabbing the laser power up would have been such an amazing little detail to have in the final version
I'm still bitter that Star Fox 2 wasn't released. Literally no one would have complained about it. I think it's wasteful that they just decided to just not release such a technically impressive game.

It may not have had the same feeling of tension and difficulty that the first had, but it's an amazing game. I still prefer the original Arwing, though.
You know the single-coloured letters for Falco, Peppy, and Slippy? I think those are used in the screens between missions (except for when you travel to Venom directly) to show which members were active in the mission you just completed. Those are visible in the mission timeline at the bottom of the screen.
I usually don't comment before watching the whole video because I think it's really douchey, but hearing the Onette theme put a huge grin on my face! I love the new opening :D
+DPghoastmaniac2 That's the popular opinion. tbh I think Star Fox 2 would be the definitive Star Fox experience, if only it had better framerate and analog control. :D

To be more specific, it was Thunder Birds that Miyamoto was a fan of, and was one of the inspirations for the original Star Fox, hence why puppet versions of Fox, Peppy, Slippy and Falco was made for the commercials (and photographed for the cover art) and inspiring the limited talking animations.
My guess concerning the Peppy comment is that he remembers Titania from when he passed through with Fox's father to investigate Andross the first time, which is stated elsewhere as being a few years in the past. It would be fitting, since Peppy also says things like "This bring back memories of your dad!"
One really small thing that's interesting to note: at 6:37 you see the player pick up a laser upgrade, the ship actually has extra laser canons that appear and the lasers shoot from them instead of from the front of the ship
This still happens in the released Version its just hidden and really hard to See because the Jetexhaust burst is brighter and bigger. Try breaking while collecting a singel laser to Double laser Upgrade and you will See the Animation!
Loved the video, and love the others too! Although one problem... Now I'm going to have to hook up my old N64 and find my copy of Star Fox 64, because I don't even remember playing the underwater level! Anyway keep up the great work!
It's one of the hardest levels to get to because it's quite far along the hard/top path of the planet map, so you have to beat the secret Corneria boss to get to Area Y (or Sector Y? Been too long.), get enough hits (kills) in Area Y, then ??? to stay on the hard lath until you get to the water level. I have seen my dad play (and beat) it back in the day, but I was never good enough to stay on the hard path beyond Area Y myself.
Thanks Dude for showing me video material I never saw!! I know a lot of old images in all the magazines, but video??? Not in my days as a young gamer ^^
Awesome. This is one of my favorite games of all time! but what about the unused audio clips? you tell us that there were a ton of unused lines, but you don't play any of them. I have actually tinkered with the internal files for this game, so I have heard a few voice clips in the files that I don't think are used anywhere, and I can only imagine how many unused lines are in the Japanese versions!
I have a theory about that translated Peppy line - 'I remember this from 10 years ago." Maybe he's reminiscing about when he crash landed on Titania in...STAR FOX ZERO! Am I right?! =D
Crippled Gamer starfox zero is between star Fox and star Fox 64, and if i remember right, on the history intro of star Fox 64 they say about peppy, pigma and Fox's father and what happened 10 years ago, i think the dialogue peppy said was meaning that.
thankns bro i never knew about the development of starfox 64 its a shame that starfox 2 got cancelled but thanks to emulators now we can enjoy it in all of its glorious polygon graphics
Always wondered if this Beta Corneria was still in the cartridge or something.. The Beta version of this game is sooo different from the released game.. I really hope to see a rom hack or something of this game and Mario 64, one day, that will bring these beta version to life. I know a Mario 64 Beta Revival rom hack exists I think, but it's great enough. Nice video !
I think when peppy says I remember this 10 years ago, it might be a shortended version of a quote that says "I remember this way back when I was young, 10 years ago" they probably put this in because of how old peppy is.
349 comments at time of this post, man, no way I'm going to find what I'm looking for, so, sorry if this has already been mentioned. But you didn't mention how the Arwing looked in the earliest images. It's not a huge thing, but worth noting. It's appearance was the same as the SNES design from the looks of the images, but given a graphical overhaul. Meaning, at some point at the start, we were going to get what was essentially HD, for the time, versions of the original Arwings. But as we know, that was changed pretty early, as the screen shots you showed us were of the familiar design we know and love today. I would like it if that early design was reused though, but with modern graphics, perhaps as a DLC thing for SF0? I love the current 64/643D/Zero look for the Arwings, don't get me wrong, but I'm sure there are some who would just love to control a graphically overhauled version of the original Arwing design. I would find it interesting myself as a novelty, personally. But things sure could have been different if they hadn't changed the Arwing's design. It's little, and wouldn't have affected SF64 itself, but SFAd, SFAs, SFC, SF643D(By extension), and SF0 could have all been quite different. Maybe they wouldn't, but it's interesting to speculate on it.

To be fair, the walker idea is a great idea.
Why have an ugly ass walker when you can get a badass tank with no combat advantage whatsoever?
The walker was great. It allowed the switch from in air to on ground combat with out having that awkward phase of having the characters physically outside the ship like in Assault.

Ultra 64 was mentioned in Killer Instinct arcade

You say the L circle was an early laser powerup, but in earlier footage, you can clearly see an early model for the Twin\Hyper powerup being collected
Could've been changed slightly, but then swapped back to the E3 powerup and polished for the final release.
What about being a one-up?
Peppy: do a barrel roll! Fox: doesn’t do it
The early images are from Spaceworld 1995 B Roll footage. So early it was still using the original Star Fox Arwing Models from the SNES version.

I have actually tinkered with the internal files for this game, so I have heard a few voice clips in the files that I don't think are used anywhere, and I can only imagine how many unused lines are in the Japanese versions!
Holy shit they really went all in on star fox two that looks absolutely incredible
"Graphics are a bit dated, but the game still hold true."
Unlike Star Fox Zero, sadly
Shots fired
Star Fox Zero is gorgeous and that's about all it has going for it
7:24 there are extra details on the front of the ship too. Especially at the bottom near the docking bay
Still the best StarFox game ever! Hope it comes back for later consoles as Nintendo is always reminiscent of its old mascots and games.
I have a theory about that translated Peppy line - 'I remember this from 10 years ago."
Maybe he's reminiscing about when he crash landed on Titania in...STAR FOX ZERO!
Am I right?! =D
fukinknobhead Tell me why? Don't just say it doesn't make sense...and leave it there. Let's have a proper conversation! =D
Crippled Gamer starfox zero is between star Fox and star Fox 64, and if i remember right, on the history intro of star Fox 64 they say about peppy, pigma and Fox's father and what happened 10 years ago, i think the dialogue peppy said was meaning that.
For anyone wondering, the Star Box thing was also an issue with the first game on SNES, with that one being called Starwing, to my knowledge.
best game of all time, and my favorite of all time
I hail from the future! Star Fox 2 was dug up and released, officially, via the snes streaming service on switch.
The new intro hasn't gotten old yet
all the dislikes are all of Andross' alternate accounts
thankns bro i never knew about the development of starfox 64 its a shame that starfox 2 got cancelled but thanks to emulators now we can enjoy it in all of its glorious polygon graphics
love that the Shield font is the same as "Knuckles the Echinda" in Sonic 3.
REALLY
There was also an Atari 2600 game called Star Fox which was (AFAIK) only released in Europe which might've also led to some copyright/legal problems.
Ratchet and Clank if possible?
Star Fox 1: Peppy: I am the cocky 1
Star Fox 64: Falco: say that again?
I prefer the aesthetics of the first Starfox. I wish it would get a Rez HD style remake.
8:01 That could have been when Peppy toured with the former Star Fox team. Pigma might know something about that.
I agree that most of the stuff in beta I don't really miss in the final version. This game is still great, regardless.
Dig the intro mate! Gr8 vid btw!
You deserve more credit than you get!
ah yes, perfect beach getaway with missiles and leaping monsters
I Like The Intro!
what about the walker functionallity???
That's a very nice intro there m8
