I remember I got this game as a kid on Dreamcast. I had played the demo in a Toys R Us and specifically remember being able to stand on people's heads. I was very disappointed when I finally got the game and I couldn't do that anymore.
Can we just take a moment and appreciate the music in this game though? Arguably one of my favorite soundtracks in a game. And it really had no right to go as hard as it did, but it sure fucking did go harder than most OSTs did at the time.
Sonic Adventure is my favorite Sonic game and I think it's still a perfectly fine game to play today. Sonic jumps and moves smoothly and it's fun to play as the other characters, not to mention the soundtrack is fantastic.

@sk I mean, the Genesis was basically done by 1995. So at best, he would be able to play it when he was 4 in 2000… and by that time the system was 5 years out of vogue. I really wish they went back to the Adventure style of 3D Sonic games. The recent games are way too linear and I'm not a fan of the boost mechanic. Sonic's speed should be momentum based and should rely on the player's platforming skills. I'm not asking for Adventure 3, but I do want Sonic's gameplay to return to that style.
PingasMaster2041 From the gameplay I've seen of Sonic Boom, it doesn't look like what I'm looking for. It's a mix of slow combat sections and linear running stages. The speed sections especially just don't impress. The characters just run in a straight path and occasionally move left or right to avoid obstacle.

Lone Devil I actually thought Spiderman was similar to Sonic personality wise, holy crap what if they met someday? Well I don't like Sonic Boom for what it does to Knuckles! 2 years from now I hope we actually get a really good Sonic Game that makes up for the poor quality Sonic Games released starting in 2006, although I get the feeling that will never happen.
I literally couldn't agree more. Been saying that for years. The lack of such movement control is why I haven't truly enjoyed a 3D Sonic game in over 10 years. From Heroes onward, controlling Sonic just hasn't felt fluid/natural.
Being a somewhat former Sonic fan myself, honestly the Beta elements look better than the released version. Not visually, but from a gameplay standpoint. The only characters I enjoyed in Sonic Adventure were honestly, Sonic, Knuckles and Amy. Yes I didn't care if Amy was slow, she only had 3 levels, two of them are very short.. Tails was just Sonic's levels, but shorter and you just raced Sonic, you basically were already doing the exact same story as Sonic, but with Tails. The only thing he gets out of it is character development. Gamma's got repetitive and Big's was just boring.
I heard the reason that the extra backgeound characters were cut out so they could make the backgrounds and main cast more detailed because they took up too many polygons. Essentially these old consoles could only render so many polygons at once which is why the ingame egg carrier looks awful when it appears above tails shop but looks fine everywhere else.

Well, I don't want to put words in his mouth. But he seems to cover games with really interesting development history, and also those from before or around the turn of the millennium. Sonic 06 is neither of these.
I really thought the part about Tails possibly starting the game is very intriguing. It actually could work if you think about it. These beta videos really breathe new life into the old games, at least for me. I don't look at games the same way anymore. I see something odd and wonder if it was always supposed to be there, see empty spaces and question if someone took something out of that space before the final version, etc.

It was one of my first game Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. I had very fun times playing it! Graphics wowed me back then since no console out there was able to give me this kind of graphics. 60fps gameplay with nice gameplay. Enough reason to come back to play the game with the other characters. Excellent game! Sonic Adventure 2 was a letdown for me though. Wasn't the same as the previous sonic adventure

Well gamma is a robot... He is suited to have guns and lazers and missiles. How else can a robot defend himself? I guess it's how a kid is already adjusted to characters in games. I mean watching movies then yea a robot blasting stuff. Even that can avoid the ratings. Now that I realize in the comic franchise for sonic universe, there are characters WAY WAY long ago with guns... O . O I forgot his name but he is a weasel and he uses even bigger curse words than "damn" Another also is Julie Su the echidna with her blaster. Maybe the fans thought that since some of the comic characters there have guns and blasters why not in the games but with other characters? o o Though really sometimes its not really a good idea to trust fans anyways O.O so I get your point... Because of the fans asking for Guns in Sonic-games, we got Gamma, Tails and Eggman mecha-gameplay (Adventure 2) and Shadow the Hedgehog (game). However, I personally like it and it really fits Shadow, so I don't really understand the hate for that... I also like those multiple Story-pathways, were you can see alternate results. And like the first Sonic-games, only the good ending is canon (Sonic got all Chaos Emeralds and defeated Eggman, Shadow got all Chaos Emeralds, choose the right path and knew he wasn't an Android, so he destroyed Devil Doom).

Odd I ever make a game, I'm going to make the earlier versions of the game available to the owners of it. I've always wished that debs would do this. I know it's a lot of work, but I always feel as if we're losing a part of gaming history.
That's fair to ask but, I feel that most of the time developers don't want people looking into unfinished and unpolished stuff. Plus, that would require extra work most of the time. Cancelled or unfinished stuff is, well, unfinished or undone.

You didn't include any info on the windy valley beta restoration? You can play the long lost windy valley level now, I restored it, pretty much completely.
Why is it that the Beta of a game, more often than not, seems much more interesting than the final product? Also, I find it very lackluster that Sonic Team apparently planned for Super Sonic to be playable in regular stages but decided to cut that feature. Breezing through the game (after completion) as Super Sonic, raping everything in your path, is what makes it so fullfilling to collect all the Chaos Emeralds. And then I don't care if the stages aren't built for Super Sonic, I would have wanted him playable anyway, Bad excuse is bad, Sonic Team.
Thing is, SS would play just fine in these stages too. Regardless of rather or not he'd break the game. The only other excuse I can think of is that SA's hit detection can be glitchy at times. So maybe during test play, SS kept clipping through objects when at high speed. And with little time left to debug him let alone the rest of the game. They simply just left him out. The fact that there's even a voice clip helps show that this might have been a very late possibly last minute cut.
***** No, I would not, because the Beta often just DOES look more polished. Like the water effects in Kingdom Valley in 06 which were removed in the final game. Trust me, if we had gotten the beta, and when then exposed to the current final game afterwards, I would look at it and think.... ain't something missing here??
The reason for why Beta's are more interesting is because of how generally corporations don't provide information on them, it's that mysterious coverup aspect that makes them interesting.
What about the fact that Sonic and Tails use simpler models during Sky Chase Acts 1 and 2 in the Dreamcast port, possibly the very same models used in Sonic R?

I wouldn't say it's just the (Sega Forum-going) fans, but I find that a lot of web critics or people who are otherwise out of the loop with the Sonic series are the ones who seem to dislike any Sonic game that tries to deviate from the classic formula, believing that Sonic Team should not learn from poorly executed concepts but simply disacknowledge (which is totally a word) the fact that they even came up with the idea in the first place. A good example is Shadow the Hedgehog- one of the reasons why that game fell flat on its face was because its attempt at a "dark" storyline and atmosphere was laughable, with not-quite-swear-words added into the script seemingly at the last minute and Shadow's contrived backstory involving aliens. There are a lot of people, however, who believe that Sonic games should not have dark storylines full stop, citing Shadow's game as a reason. Similarly, you get a lot of web critics who moan about the existence of an extended cast of characters (up to and sometimes including Tails and Knuckles), even in games where they don't do anything (e.g. Generations), ignoring the fact that they could be used for great things and not be forever associated with bad games. The notion of Sonic games in 3D is another pathetic complaint that pops up. IGN has an article called "Where did Sonic go wrong", which reads as if it escaped from a cringe thread. And as for games that are condemned for being different, look no further than Sonic Labyrinth. It's an average game at worst but there are people (most of which aren't fans, to my knowledge) who slam the game because "Sonic is about going fast, and in this game you go slow!", not bothering to analyse the game on its own merits. Dr. Mario is a Mario game that doesn't involve any sort of platforming. Should I therefore dismiss it as a terrible game?

Same here and I actually liked that the chaos learned stuff on their own like drawing Knuckles on the floor since they didn’t have a Chao Kindergarten in the first game. That wasn’t introduced til the 2nd game. The chaos seem to have more emotion in the beta version too.

Quite frankly, most of the games in the Sonic series have soundtracks just as good. There ARE exceptions, but the good ones outnumber the bad.

Y'know, I remember watching this video before school during 6th grade. I've been a fan of this channel for so long, and it makes watching this again every now and then makes me feel warm and fuzzy, but also realizing where the time went.

I really wish they went back to the Adventure style of 3D Sonic games. The recent games are way too linear and I'm not a fan of the boost mechanic. Sonic's speed should be momentum based and should rely on the player's platforming skills. I'm not asking for Adventure 3, but I do want Sonic's gameplay to return to that style.
PingasMaster2041 From the gameplay I've seen of Sonic Boom, it doesn't look like what I'm looking for. It's a mix of slow combat sections and linear running stages.
The speed sections especially just don't impress. The characters just run in a straight path and occasionally move left or right to avoid obstacle.

Well I don't like Sonic Boom for what it does to Knuckles! 2 years from now I hope we actually get a really good Sonic Game that makes up for the poor quality Sonic Games released starting in 2006, although I get the feeling that will never happen.
I literally couldn't agree more. Been saying that for years. The lack of such movement control is why I haven't truly enjoyed a 3D Sonic game in over 10 years. From Heroes onward, controlling Sonic just hasn't felt fluid/natural.

Being a somewhat former Sonic fan myself, honestly the Beta elements look better than the released version. Not visually, but from a gameplay standpoint. The only characters I enjoyed in Sonic Adventure were honestly, Sonic, Knuckles and Amy. Yes I didn't care if Amy was slow, she only had 3 levels, two of them are very short.. Tails was just Sonic's levels, but shorter and you just raced Sonic, you basically were already doing the exact same story as Sonic, but with Tails. The only thing he gets out of it is character development. Gamma's got repetitive and Big's was just boring.

I heard the reason that the extra backgeound characters were cut out so they could make the backgrounds and main cast more detailed because they took up too many polygons.
Essentially these old consoles could only render so many polygons at once which is why the ingame egg carrier looks awful when it appears above tails shop but looks fine everywhere else.

I really thought the part about Tails possibly starting the game is very intriguing. It actually could work if you think about it. These beta videos really breathe new life into the old games, at least for me. I don't look at games the same way anymore. I see something odd and wonder if it was always supposed to be there, see empty spaces and question if someone took something out of that space before the final version, etc.

It was one of my first game Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. I had very fun times playing it! Graphics wowed me back then since no console out there was able to give me this kind of graphics. 60fps gameplay with nice gameplay. Enough reason to come back to play the game with the other characters. Excellent game! Sonic Adventure 2 was a letdown for me though. Wasn't the same as the previous sonic adventure

Why Stop with Just Chao Garden though? Try Expansion of Chao World, (are 10 Gardens+ really too much to ask for?) You really have to wonder why Chao raising was abandoned starting with Heroes? At least it was nice to find Eggman was still raising them in the game Shadow the Hedgehog.

Well gamma is a robot... He is suited to have guns and lazers and missiles. How else can a robot defend himself? I guess it's how a kid is already adjusted to characters in games. I mean watching movies then yea a robot blasting stuff. Even that can avoid the ratings. It's also blasting other robots instead of ppl too o.o But shadow changes everything since he is a living being with violent way of doing stuff and aiming at everything. Sorry if it's long >~

In fact many fans wanted Sonic to have a gun, Yugi Naka understandably denies the stupid idea as it doesn't fit with Sonic's character.
Because of the fans asking for Guns in Sonic-games, we got Gamma, Tails and Eggman mecha-gameplay (Adventure 2) and Shadow the Hedgehog (game).
However, I personally like it and it really fits Shadow, so I don't really understand the hate for that... I also like those multiple Story-pathways, were you can see alternate results. And like the first Sonic-games, only the good ending is canon (Sonic got all Chaos Emeralds and defeated Eggman, Shadow got all Chaos Emeralds, choose the right path and knew he wasn't an Android, so he destroyed Devil Doom).
Definitely a lot of nostalgia with this video nowadays. Glad I came back to it.

Odd I ever make a game, I'm going to make the earlier versions of the game available to the owners of it. I've always wished that debs would do this. I know it's a lot of work, but I always feel as if we're losing a part of gaming history.
That's fair to ask but, I feel that most of the time developers don't want people looking into unfinished and unpolished stuff. Plus, that would require extra work most of the time. Cancelled or unfinished stuff is, well, unfinished or undone.
I am an obsesive note taker and keep everything in order all the time. Not to mention I can sti at a computer screen and do stuff all day as long as I have you tube by my side. If your wondering, all the games I want to make would be free as they are easy to make, and wouldn't be worth much if they wwere rices as they would be simple. Why is it that the Beta of a game, more often than not, seems much more interesting than the final product?
Also, I find it very lackluster that Sonic Team apparently planned for Super Sonic to be playable in regular stages but decided to cut that feature. Breezing through the game (after completion) as Super Sonic, raping everything in your path, is what makes it so fullfilling to collect all the Chaos Emeralds. And then I don't care if the stages aren't built for Super Sonic, I would have wanted him playable anyway, Bad excuse is bad, Sonic Team.
Thing is, SS would play just fine in these stages too. Regardless of rather or not he'd break the game. The only other excuse I can think of is that SA's hit detection can be glitchy at times. So maybe during test play, SS kept clipping through objects when at high speed. And with little time left to debug him let alone the rest of the game. They simply just left him out. The fact that there's even a voice clip helps show that this might have been a very late possibly last minute cut.
Plus it could have been added within any of the re-releases of Sonic Adventure for crying out loud!
***** No, I would not, because the Beta often just DOES look more polished. Like the water effects in Kingdom Valley in 06 which were removed in the final game. Trust me, if we had gotten the beta, and when then exposed to the current final game afterwards, I would look at it and think.... ain't something missing here??
The reason for why Beta's are more interesting is because of how generally corporations don't provide information on them, it's that mysterious coverup aspect that makes them interesting.

What about the fact that Sonic and Tails use simpler models during Sky Chase Acts 1 and 2 in the Dreamcast port, possibly the very same models used in Sonic R?

I wouldn't say it's just the (Sega Forum-going) fans, but I find that a lot of web critics or people who are otherwise out of the loop with the Sonic series are the ones who seem to dislike any Sonic game that tries to deviate from the classic formula, believing that Sonic Team should not learn from poorly executed concepts but simply disacknowledge (which is totally a word) the fact that they even came up with the idea in the first place.
A good example is Shadow the Hedgehog- one of the reasons why that game fell flat on its face was because its attempt at a "dark" storyline and atmosphere was laughable, with not-quite-swear-words added into the script seemingly at the last minute and Shadow's contrived backstory involving aliens. There are a lot of people, however, who believe that Sonic games should not have dark storylines full stop, citing Shadow's game as a reason.
Similarly, you get a lot of web critics who moan about the existence of an extended cast of characters (up to and sometimes including Tails and Knuckles), even in games where they don't do anything (e.g. Generations), ignoring the fact that they could be used for great things and not be forever associated with bad games. The notion of Sonic games in 3D is another pathetic complaint that pops up. IGN has an article called "Where did Sonic go wrong", which reads as if it escaped from a cringe thread.
And as for games that are condemned for being different, look no further than Sonic Labyrinth. It's an average game at worst but there are people (most of which aren't fans, to my knowledge) who slam the game because "Sonic is about going fast, and in this game you go slow!", not bothering to analyse the game on its own merits. Dr. Mario is a Mario game that doesn't involve any sort of platforming. Should I therefore dismiss it as a terrible game?
I don't know why it doesn't happen with Zelda, but I do know that Nintendo RARELY tries something new with Mario.

Same here and I actually liked that the chaos learned stuff on their own like drawing Knuckles on the floor since they didn’t have a Chao Kindergarten in the first game. That wasn’t introduced til the 2nd game. The chaos seem to have more emotion in the beta version too.

Why compare the Beta Dreamcast footage and images to DX footage and images? DX looks completely different from the Dreamcast releases, emulating the game on Demul isn't even that hard.
