MichaelLeroi I've received a LOT of requests to make a video about Banjo-Kazooie, but I had never played any of the games - that is until I found a copy of the original game for a _very_ good price. So I picked it up, and decided to play it when I got back to my apartment, despite how late it was. When I pushed the cartridge into the slot and turned on my limited edition gold n64 that I got for my eleventh birthday, I heard a electrical crackle coming from the cartridge slot, so I turned off the system and pulled the game out. Now, I didn't believe in anything supernatural before now, so I thought that perhaps the pins were damaged - however, upon pulling out the game pak, I discovered that wasn't the case. Everything was in perfect condition, so what had caused it?
I put the cartridge back in and turned the system back on, and I heard the crackle again - but this time, I left the game in and the n64 still on. To my surprise, the game intro showed up on the screen. I felt relieved, and as the intro began to play I noticed out of the corner of my eye that it had started raining outside. I closed the blinds and I heard thunder beyond the thin walls of my living room. I unplugged all of my electronics and such to prevent a power surge from damaging them, but I left my n64 and TV on because they were on a power strip. I sat down and noticed that the intro animation was glitching. The part where Mumbo-Jumbo fell out of the sky was looping over and over, but the theme didn't end there - a slowed-down, off-tune version of the intro song kept looping despite the animation staying within the same 6 seconds or so of footage.
I also noticed something else strange - all of the characters were missing their eyes. Because of that, you could see inside of their character models, and it wasn't pretty. It was easier to notice the repeated textures and the longer I watched, the more I felt sick to my stomach.
I'd never heard of this glitch before, but as I got up to go to my computer and check the internet for answers, a crack of thunder reminded me that wouldn't be possible. I was going to find answers myself, so I picked up the controller and check to see if button input would affect anything. For some weird reason even the start button didn't do anything, but I finally succeeded in getting the open menu up when I pressed the A button. As far as I could tell, everything was fine except for the copyright date which was off by one year, and the absence of any sound. I pressed start, and the screen went black for a few seconds. When the game loaded, however, I didn't find myself in the starting area as I had hoped. One of the only areas I had ever heard of, Clanker's Cavern, was waiting to greet me on the other side of the black screen, but that wasn't all.
There was a very noticeable absence of the game's iconic collectibles, and the shark that was known to be there was also missing. The two main characters were still missing eyes, even in the HUD, and the music was _still_ not starting. I saw that there was a chain connected to the bottom of a hole in the water, so I swam to the bottom - to find a gruesome scene. Mumbo-Jumbo was stuck on a spike, and blood was everywhere - even the water was tinted a red color. I was panicking, so I swam back up and decided to leave the cavern altogether. Upon going through the entrance to the cave, the camera panned backwards and for a single frame the shark flashed across the screen, blood-red and grinning. I was shaking so bad at this point, I couldn't hold the controller straight - I was getting paranoid and consistently glanced around my living room to make sure I was still alone. I wanted to turn on a light, but I couldn't get up. I was frozen to the couch, and the only thing I could think to do was to finish this game.
The next area loaded up unusually slowly, and thankfully so, as it was just as creepy as the last room, if not more. The screen was getting very dark and the walls of the next room were covered uncharacteristically realistic blood splatters. Messages such as "die already" and "it hurts so much" were written on the walls, and as I carefully made my way past I noticed that on the HUD, Banjo and Kazooie had blood oozing out of their eyes. Faint noises coming from the TV were slowly getting louder, and I could finally recognize the music - it was the intro theme, played backwards. The controls were getting sort of unresponsive as well, and I was starting to feel like this wasn't some dumb prank anymore.
I entered the next room and the puzzle-piece transition slowly revealed Tooty, hanging from a noose in the center of the main room. Her eyes were still missing and blood was oozing out of the empty slots where her eyes should have been. The water emerging from the pipe in the room was so red it appeared to just be pure blood, and the music was getting so loud and overwhelming that I turned around to go back to the other room. _Anywhere is better than here_, I thought to myself as I frantically mashed the buttons in the hopes of making it out. _Anywhere but here... I don't want to be playing this, alone, in the dark, afraid - someone help!_
But the controller stopped working and the music finally came to a deafening climax, revealing the words "I'm coming for you" on the door to the next room, and Banjo turned around, facing the screen and I screamed at the top of my lungs, because I wasn't seeing the inside of a character model, I was seeing the characters' empty eye sockets. In a panic, I reached for my replica Master Sword on the living room table and smashed it down on my system, and the noise, the game, the rain, the fear - it all stopped.
So I guess I blacked out after that, because I woke up the next morning with the Master Sword between my hands... I went to a nearby church and filled a plastic bag with holy water, sticking the cartridge in and zipping it closed before tossing it in a dumpster... I'm just glad I'll never see the thing again. So yeah, I don't think I'll ever get around to doing a video on it... Sorry, guys.

The remains of Stop n' Swop in Banjo Kazooie made players keep on playing the game for many, many years after its release. Like the search for Luigi in Super Mario 64 and the search for the Triforce in Zelda Ocarina of Time, all the hours and frustration we spent on these searches can now be looked back at today as one of the reasons for why we now consider these three games legendary and among the best video games ever made!

Even the cancelled Mother 3 (specifically Earthbound 64, the 64DD incarnation), arguably the single most famous cancelled game _ever_ (aside from Minecraft precursor RubyDung, but that's cheating because everyone on the internet has heard of Minecraft), is smaller than Dream! It only used the 64DD and, obviously, if ironically, had to be cancelled, mostly because the 64DD was the biggest Nintendo flop (we don't talk about Virtual Boy, which is possibly the world's first VR, truly ahead of its time by at least a decade), but also, even with HAL Laboratory's help, they couldnt get it working on the 64 due to I think lack of experience?
Oddly enough, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (everybody's _favorite_ Kirby game, and that isn't sarcasm!) released on, well, the N64, in 2000, but I forgot when Earthbound 64 was cancelled.

I remember playing that Beach Beta, I have no idea how, much less why I was playing it, but, the Fly Action was replaced by the Backflip (Z + A), and Feathers were added to the Flight in order to limit it, along with the Flight Pads, because the Devs felt like it was too good, they'd never get the Players to Walk anywhere. They did however beef up the Flight capabilities of Kazooie to counterbalance the added Cost factors, originally it took forever to get any decent amount of altitude, taking over 10 min of flight from the highest point to reach the top of the Level in the Beach, and boy was it not worth that much work, my thumb was sore from mashing A Button, and the Decent was quick with an underwhelming view.
Also, that jingle "nobody knows" about, was likely to be used for the Musical Door Openings, or the Cheato Book, they were undecided, ultimately changing their minds entirely.
Stop n Swap was originally to become a a Cartridge Switch, although they encountered the Hardware Hard Coded Limitations of the Console only storing the data for 1 Second, True, however, that was only Version 1 of 4!
Version 2 involved using an Adapter Cartridge to plug in both Games Simultaneously. This was ultimately scraped due to needing to create and sell the product which allowed this, which ultimately would have had a single use, and would have been one of the earliest versions of DLC behind a Pay Wall included within the same Cartridge. This Data is still located within the Banjo-Tooie Files, although none know what Data it's specifically looking for when they trigger the function using Cheat Devices. The device was also going to provide an Update to Banjo Kazooie.
Version 3 involved the GBA Pack which plugged into the Controller, they thought about using it to transfer Data, but found it was facing the same Limitations as Version 2 or was capable of providing the same Data using a Memory Card, thus it became Scraped.
Version 4: Passwords! The classic fallback method. When they reached this point, they felt they were trying to hard to implement the System, and they didn't wish to detract from the enjoyment of new people to the series, thus they put the Feature to bed here.
I have no idea how I know all of this information, as I wasn't even 14 at the time everything was happening surrounding this series of events.

You'd think with virtual console stuff and emulation on modern consoles that "Stop 'n' Swop" could be revived to some extent.
However, I can think of a game that did something similar: The Ratchet & Clank trilogy. Near the end of the original "Ratchet & Clank" you become a Gadgetron employee and get a discount, but said discount will not take effect for two years. Two years after the release of the original, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (basically 'the third one') came out. If you have R&C1 save data on your system, you get a 10% discount on weapons. Also, I believe if you have R&C2 data, you can get other items for free/at a discount as well.
Though there is absolutely no evidence that these are related, I do find it nice that a similar concept was actually put into a game that works, it just needed external savegame storage.

I also have a theory of my own regarding Fungus Forest. In DK64, after you feed Scoff enough bananas to open the boss door, some dark music will play. If you listen closely, you'll notice that it's a version of Fungi Forest's theme. Based on how Clanker was a real whale in the BETA and that he likely was in Fungus Forest, I believe this theme for opening a boss door in DK64 may have been intended to be the live Clanker's Internal theme.

Banjo-kazooie and the sequel to it was truly the best games of my childhood.
I still play it to this day. :')

I think the reason the stop and swap wasn't hidden very well thanks to Mumbo is because, it was intended to be use but the software update came out after the game did, I don't think they wanted to do a recall for just one feature. So they left it in.

I like extended jiggy song. I wish it was the real thing. I even have an idea on what banjo will do.
1 banjo spins around in a circle
    2 banjo jumps twice
    3 kazooie eats the jiggy

Thanks very much for this. BK was one of my favorite games growing up, it's cool to see how some of it came together.

A lot of these themes sound like something you'd hear on runescape's older songs. There's something so tranquilizing and nostalgic about them.

Huh, "Jungle 1" reminds me of Sim Town's "Song 1". Weird.

+The Angry Little Alchemist Yes, let us judge a game based off of a gameplay trailer that probably won't even show how much better the final product will look!

    • @TheXBRGUY
      @TheXBRGUY 9 лет назад +4

      Monachus Bibe
Yes, let us be pretentious and pretend like Judging a game's reveal based off a trailer specifically made to excite a crowd and specifically made to be judged by a crowd shouldn't be judged because we don't like it when people are negative towards a product.
The funny thing is that you slam me for "judging it" when I called it shit, but let's be honest, if I said it looked good, you wouldn't be mad about me "judging" it.

    • @WarriorMasterTrainer
      @WarriorMasterTrainer 9 лет назад

The Angry Little Alchemist A game's reveal does not mean it's a final product. There is plenty of time for a game to improve or change entirely. Judging a game, and calling it crap or shit before it even releases, or even decent/stable gameplay is released is idiotic
If you used a word other than shit, and explained why you disliked the game, I would be passive. If you actually put decent and non half assed criticism, then I wouldn't really care. But deeming an entire game "shit" and not even explaining why is just pathetic, especially since you haven't even seen final gameplay.
Also, to clarify, I'm not angry, I just find it bizarre.

The song “magic” was properly a early song that would play when you get transformed by Mumbo.
