  • Today we return to the most decorated battleship in US Navy history to compare and test out two modern World War II inspired, automatic, Swiss-made watches-the Vertex M100 (40mm field watch) and the Longines Heritage Military (38.5 mm pilot watch). We also take an exclusive look at an original Dirty Dozen Vertex caliber 59. Join me on the USS New Jersey battleship for another independent watch review, featuring the positives and negatives of the modern Vertex M100 and Longines Heritage Military watches, their specs, performance, history, and evolution of their design, to find out which out of these two brands did a better job at reissuing these military icons. What do you think about the watches featured in this video? Please share in the comments!

Well!! Thank you for showcasing Vertex! Was actually in London yesterday to see Don and the new boutique! I was watching this wearing my M100 it’s the manual wind 1st edition Don brought out. In my eyes it needs to be manual wind as that’s how the original was! Pretty much my favourite brand in terms of history, military history and the true respect Don gives with each new release. If you took over your great grandads business you’d want to give it the highest respect you could physically and financially you can give it. Don and Vertex is this in a nutshell ! Awesome show and an intro worthy for your showreel!!!

Alex, I couldn't agree more regarding the brand Longines. I have 4-5 on my very short list right now. Great bang for ones buck indeed. Regarding this review and these two watches UG reviewed....hands down the Vertex is the winner and the better watch overall. I don't own the Vertex my I have a buddy that does own it and all I can say is, WOW. So much better in person. Everything else, Omega, Longines, GS and Tudor all day long. Thanks, Alex......

As a veteran I appreciate every time you include military ships, planes, memorials, etc… in your videos / watch reviews. Your respect and admiration for these things and the men and women who served in the armed forces of this nation and others is the kindest and most generous way of expressing your gratitude.
Both watches are beautiful but I find myself favoring the Vertek. Longines always seems to have so much unrealized potential in their offerings.
What a splendid way to start the weekend watching another excellent video!🥃

Thank you, I appreciate the respectful honesty. I have mentioned in several videos over this last year, I am not here for drama, nor vapid click bait (well, maybe sometimes just a little to make things interesting, we still have to grow this hobby!). Sadly, although I have no idea of what the current drama is about today, or care to know about, this is just a sad reality of the insidious hype driven YT algorithm and the nosiness of people who should do better things with their limited time on this planet IMO. I just want to share my passion and learn about watches at all levels and try having some fun doing so. That has always been my MO. I am glad you appreciate that and are better then that.. Onwards and upwards!

Great review (as always). I’ve owned one of the limited manual-wind Vertex M100 (no A) watches for just over two years and it is a watch that I just never get tired of. These were not offered to the public, but I emailed Don and told him that I’d like to buy one to mark my promotion in the US Army to Lieutenant Colonel and not only did he give me the code to the M100 purchase site, but threw in a diverse assortment of NATO straps and a generous discount that I did not ask for.
Fit and finish are on a similar level to Tag Heuer, Tudor and Omega, slightly better than Longines and Rado and slightly below Rolex and IWC. My manual-wind watch (ETA/Pesseux 7001) lacks a screw-down crown and hacking seconds, but is more authentic to the 1940s original because of it (while still water resistant to 100 meters). At 10mm thick, it is 2mm thinner than the new M100A, and on the black leather strap or the optional bracelet (Don generously sent me one without charge) is fancy enough to pair with a suit and tie. It is also accurate to +2 seconds per day and has been since the say I bought it.
    This is my favorite watch.

Military inspired watches are my absolute favorite and it's difficult to choose between these two. Longines executed the sand colored dial flawlessly and I love the cathedral style hands. Yet the Vertex I think takes the win with that superb lume. Being accustomed to standing watches at night on a ship myself, having good lume on a watch is a nice luxury.

Yet another great video TGV. The quality of your productions and the connection to history has no equal in the RUclips watch community. My grandfather served with the Royal Navy from 1917 to 1925 and later with the Royal Australian Navy from 1925 to 1961, consequently I have an interest in all things Naval. On our visits to the USA, the Philadelphia Naval Yard was a highlight, and we were fortunate enough to stay in a hotel within the precinct. Wandering around the Naval Yard, to see the USS JFK berthed at the end of the war was a highlight and it was amazing to observe the shear size of this ship.

I know you prefer the 36-38mm watches, but you ever find the time and interest, I'd love a survey of field watches for the 7.5 - 8" wrist crowd. I have only found the Glycine Incursore ref 3874.3 (at 46mm), but would love to know if there are other (and better) gems in the larger, e'hem, "normal-looking," sizes.

First off, that intro. Holy shit! What a great job! 🥇🏆🎖️
Secondly, I watched an interview with the owner of Vertex over at Gecko watches. That guy has put thought and care into EVERY aspect of these watches. There is nothing this guy hasn't scrutinized and literally gave his best so that the watch would proudly represent his family business Vertex name. He's just the bomb. He worked his ass off for years to restart his family's company and deserves every penny of support people can give. So, in my opinion, this was no contest.

Looking at the two watches, both are great reissues of military watches. The Longines Heritage Collection watches are all brilliant, and I would definitely go for the Longines in this comparison, it just looks better from a modern viewpoint. Longines is using the back catalogue that they have, and their history is one of the best. Longines was pretty much an overlooked brand for a while, but it's fantastic that it is being recognised as being a great watch making company. The watches that are being reissued by Longines are superb, Longines seem to have managed to get the balance between vintage and modern and I am looking forward to seeing what Longines will release from their back catalogue.

Outstanding video, TGV! I’ve thought that Lorier should do a straight field watch version of their Falcon.

Great review. I've been looking at Hamilton & Timex field watches as I'd like an upgrade from a Lorus Lumibrite, but it's great to see other brands as well. I'm going to take a long decision & I will definitely be going for a brand that has some war stories.

I've been lusting after a Longines, but I wouldn't go for one of these re-creations, when real vintage pieces are available. Thanks for another great video and to your mysterious friend!

Thank you so much TGV for another great watch review video! These two time pieces are quite special indeed! When I wear my WWII styled manual wind Timex in 38mm I get very similar historically pleasant feelings when I wear it! The only thing that is different is the Sapphire crystal instead of acrylic crystal from WWII. Great watches and a wonderful review!
Stay healthy and well as always!
    Have a great day!

Thank you Tristano! Mille Grazie! Both are great watches. Watching your movie I have on my wrist my Christopher Ward Sandhurst W10. In my humble opinion this is one of the best value propositions in modern military field watches. Superb case quality, COSC certified movement, 38mm diameter. Great lume, Sapphire glass and 200m water resistance. All this I purchased for $680 from CW. Beats these much higher priced pieces in any department.

Wow so much history here and that battleship sends shivers down my spine! I really do like the look of the Longines. I’m not sure the brand can claw their way back up to where they were but they are having a damn good go through great watches and not hype copies. They have really captured the era in that field Watch and are my preference however Vertex is a brand that has to be respected.

Thanks for this. As a military history buff myself your hard work is much appreciated. Dad was in The Pacific and Godfather was in Europe during The War. What a great tour of the New Jersey and and insight to these two watches. For me the Vertex is the ONE! I just don’t like the faux patina and the Vertex has the SPECS.

That Vertex is so nice. Those 3D shaped numerals are so damn cool. I feel it's a tad overpriced for a Sellita even if it is a top grade. But damn I want one.
I actually sent this video to a bunch of mates who aren't really into watches just because it's so well done, and packed full of great shots and history. Love what you do TGV.

Another amazing video! Top class ,TGV! I prefer Timor over Vertex (just because of case size). They have the same movement (Timor has Automatic and Handwind versions). Even though it was hard to make the decision. If Vertex release a 37mm I would also add it to my collection (Dirty Dozens are always welcome).
Longines Military Heritage has just one issue: no handwind movement. I do like the faux patina and case size. (It is my favourite watch in my collection)
You did cover "field" and "pilot" but where is the CWC Royal Navy diver to complete the British military forces collection?
Always great to see your videos!

Lots of military watches on the market at the moment , i have quite a few (i like the style )
I think both watches are really nice , i like the vertex as its larger than the longines .
But some of the ww2 watches were really small , i have some replicas and they are smaller than these .
But nice vid love to see military watches reviewed .

Great post many thanks.. .. I'm a huge Vertex fan and try to add their releases to my collection whenever poss. IMO their pieces are among the top military watches out there and far and away (due to their provenance) the most authentic. I buy watches that I don't want to sell(!)... But if I did buy with an eye to investment the limited runs of this independently owned watch company wld def be attractive.
Anyway fantastic and informative clip many thanks
