I binged the 1999 version in a week: it was an awesome experience! HxH is still my favourite anime ever. While the 2011 version may have newer animation (obviously), the character development, music, tone, and style of the 99' is darker and more realistic imo (especially before Greed Island). There are enough comedy and cute moments as well. I actually prefer the older animation style because it's less cutesy.

I find it interesting that people say that you have to "get through" the first part of hxh 2011, because i thoroughly enjoyed it all the way from the first episode to the very last. no idea why the beginning would be boring, and its also a great build up to the rest of the show, really giving insight to just how powerless someone is without nen, and how hard it is to become a hunter.

@@UUEBWISJSVUSSNIFFUEUE What 2011 does well is introducing the Hunter exam as a fun lil adventure that takes a darker turn. While the 1999 is much scarier and more serious from the get-go. The thing that makes it better is the character introduction and the structuring of the story, also the pacing is steady and good while in 2011, you're just watching the CliffsNotes version. You don't feel for Mito, Kite (an important character, functions as the man who causes Gon's adventure) isn't in the new HxH until much later on, you don't really feel for Gon, Leorio or anyone because they're just rushed and belong in the catalogue of every other stereotype anime character for a big chunk of the beginning. That is why the new, 2011, HxH fails at the start in many ways.

He literally just described how I feel about 1999 and 2011. I watched 1999 first when I was around 12 years old and for a while, it was all I watched, so when 2011 came out I was excited. I love the animation, the fight scenes, and the humor, however I hate the fact that they skipped over some of the character development with Gon, Kirapika, and Killua. Especially during the Exam arc. But I do have to say that I do prefer the greed island and heaven's arena arcs in 2011 over 1999.

Makayla hughes That skipped over character development is where I give the nod to 1999. That one did a phenomenal job developing the characters and building the story, whereas 2011 simply rushed through it. It was so badly rushed that 2011’s 1st episode actually rushed through the 1st THREE episodes of 1999, and all that important detail was missed. BLOWN opportunity that was big enough that I prefer 1999 more!

The York New City arc ending wasn't anti-climatic. Had they done a generic boss fight ending, then that would be so predictable and unsatisfying. I love how it came down to a hostage exchange, and the decision for Paku to end her life for the sake of the group. That was really unexpected but satisfying, which is unusual for Shounen.

I'm gonna be honest that the 1999 version is the best because they made room for character development and get to know the other candidates during the Hunter Exam even though the story is a bit slow but I think it worth it. My favorite part is during the 2nd exam where the candidates had to make sushi and I find out hilarious that the way they created it was silly. At least one candidate knows what sushi looks like and everyone just copied him. I'm sad they didn't add in the 2011 version.
Another favorite part is that they had to figure out what is the final exam looks like and they thought it was a written exam. Oh my, I could see them stress what is going to be on lol. So relatable.
The ship episode was amazing that everyone had to work together in order to survive. Also, there's an episode where Gon and Killua had to take the fox. Then, Killua was about to kill the fox but Mito told him that the fox has life and he felt guilty that he learned how to kill. That actually gave him a character development which I find out was a touching scene.
As I watched in the 2011 version, I understand they want to follow the manga faithfully and move on to the other arcs. But looking back in 1999, you realized that it was better and more detailed than this version.

Ah I wanted to add a couple of things: one is that I find Gon actually a quite interesting shonen character, because despite being a solar and open minded person with a sense of justice and honor... there is something how to say... off with his ethic scale... it's not exactly how we would envision it, Gon has a slightly more cynical and "wild" shade in his moral compass... Curiously he reminds me, in that aspect, of Made in Abyss main character Riko (and the two series actually share a little bunch of concepts and vibes). The other thing is that similarly Hisoka is a weird, interesting and cool character, because... well you explained it well, but the fact is that Hisoka occasionally is able to become a really valid ally and bounce nicely with the other protagonists, so much that he almost seems the 5th man in the team xD.
Oh also, rewatching the old show I realized how Kurapika can actually become dangerous in his worst moments (meaning that he could actually kill innocents if they are an obstacle or a menace to his revenge) and that Senritzu is a fantastic character who should be remembered more :P

Honestly, I can't see 1999's Gon and Killua develop into the Gon and Killua in the Chimera Ant arc and election arc. Gon is too good and mature in the 1999 version to have the mental break down. In 2011 version, there are tons of foreshadowing. And Killua is too broken before he met Gon in 1999 version for me to believe he has some one he cared deeply about in the past (Alluka). These I think were parts of the reason why they decided to make another adaption. The characters in 1999's version deviate from the Manga too much to make the character development in the following arcs convincing. I wasn't saying that 1999' version is bad. It's just different from the source material.

I get your point and totally agree with you. I can't see 1999 Gon having that mental breakdown either. He's too mentally stable, being always cool and calm, even perfect I'd say.
It makes more sense with the 2011 Gon. He's much more flawed and emotional.
1999 is cool tho. They've done their best with what they had at the time. Let's don't forget that the chimera ant arc came out much later than the previous material. I think it's possible that Yogashi had changed some of his original ideas and wrote the story somewhat differently than he would if he had continued without breaks.

    • @wen771127
      @wen771127 2 года назад +2

@@DL-idk I read the manga before the anime, and the manga Gon resembles more closely to the 2011 Gon. Everything in 2011 is more faithfully adapted from the manga(except the Kite situation). To be honest, I watched the 1999 version first, but couldn't finish it because how much it deviated from the manga. I'm not saying it's bad. I knew people who actually prefer the 1999 version to the Manga. It really depend on what you read/ watch first. I'd like to think Yogashi had some idea of a broken Gon from very early on, since you can see a lot of signs in the Manga as well.

2011 strength: chimera arc/we got to see ging
    1999 strengthsss:
    *Better bgm/opening/ending songs
    *usage of nen colors
*usage of creative reflections and shadows
    *detailed hairs
    *kurapika’s chain
    *chrollo’s hair, jacket and earrings
*eye animation(tear duct is even present in zoldycks vs chrollo
*knowledge on when to use dark background
    *nen sound
*illumi does look badass and not some washed up mannequin
*hisoka going for leorio and kurapika, the way he spots and runs towards them was soo artistically suspenseful, 2011 he just runs towards them with no choreography
*blades in 1999 shows reflection of the sun or the moon, an example is when kurapika drew his blade in front of a bloodthirsty hisoka, the moonlight shines on his blade, in 2011 it sucks everything happened in a very bright sunny day, and the blades? Ughh looks ughh
*SKIN TONE! 2011 they all look generic tbh
*biscuit, machi are prettier by a large margin
*hisokas voice and theme, as opposed to the ulquiora dubbed hisoka with mexican guitar theme, sorry no hate for mexicans, but the theme doesnt suit him
*Let me show you instead of let me tell you type of anime(2011 excessive usage of narrator sucks)
    *usage of cinematic camera angles
*addition of story enhancing scenes makes it an anime ADAPTATION, as opposed to the very faithful to the manga that we might as well consider it as a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION OF THE MANGA(aka hxh 2011)
    * SHOWING KALLUTO AND MAHO ZOLDYCK at the assasination of the 10 dons
*CHROLLO VS ZOLDYCKS! 1999 showed a fast moving REAL background as opposed to the lazy blurred background of 2011, chrollo’s earring reflections and silvas COLORED NEN ATTACK, zeno’s usage of en to pinpoint chrollo,
    * I COULD KEEP THE LIST GOING, 1999 was superb in almost all aspects, despite the 12 yr technilogical gap

iutub eraccount I really don’t know how you got to that conclusion. The 1999 version bored me absolutely to sleep. The newer one did better in executing the lighter funny moments and the tense, dark epic moments with their choice of music.

    • @-freakingaming-9809
      @-freakingaming-9809 3 года назад +4

@@b3n949 I have to disagree with you with your claim that the 2011 version had the better execution in terms of the scenes like the funny moments and the intense moment of the show. But, although the 2011 had a great job in animating the funny moments (the same with the 1999 version), the intense parts of the show most especially in the Yorknew City arc weren't that dark compared to the 1999 adaptation. Well, at least they managed to do well in the chimera ant arc but not as amazing as the 1999 did (I'm still talking about the dark moments here). And the fillers of 1999 were also fantastic that even everyone who root for the og adaptation enjoyed it. In terms of background music, I feel that some of the music of the 2011 did not quite match well with their animation design. Cause HxH2011's animation design was kinda 'cute' so it didn't kinda match well. When I think of a show that the bg music was really match to their respective animated design was Bleach and AoT.
What the 1999 lacks I think was the feels. Well the fillers in the 1999 had also some feels but very few and very quick unlike the 2011 version we had the Komugi x Meruem final moments and Killua x Alluka moments. Well you can't blame the 1999 cause the show didn't continue due to Togashi's illness.
Nevertheless, both adaptation and the show in totality were lovable and fantastic.

Yeah but please do not include the chimera arc as it was not yet animated during 1999 :)
though i really did enjoy that arc,
i got irritated by the excessive narration,
1999’s strong point is making viewers think/analyze and be presented with surprise factor, that is one of the reason i personally think its superior compared to 2011 which would out of nowhere, present a narration, its more of a child friendly animation that would appeal to those who arent still mentally matured(dont get me wrong on this one) but 1999 was presented in a much more intellectual manner, they do not present technique names on screen just for audience to absorb info, 1999 was more of a
“Ill show you not thru words, do your part”
While 2011 is like, lemme spoil you with all the info.
      And btw :)
Was kalluto and maha zoldyck shown in 2011 during assasination of 10 dons? I guess not, which makes me think of something, i guess durinh 1999, togashi was assisting or at least monitoring the production back then, this is just my theory though, notice in 1999 that it has “togashi” in their 1999hxh logo, whereas in 2011 i didnt seem to notice, this is just my speculation but i think 2011 was not monitored by togashi, and instead, madhouse(the animator of 2011) just took everything from the manga and made it unto anime.
And here is another catch, its not hxh related but kinda related to the studio that animated 2011, yeah madhouse,
Madhouse was DECLINED for their remake offer on shaman king,
Yep the author of shaman king didnt want a remake of his work by madhouse studio :)
Madhouse did a great job on hajime no ippo and deathnote, but in my opinion, didnt just deliver it right on hxh
But for all those who disagreed with my opinion, i guess youre the most respectful one and rational as well, as you have pointed out some of your opinion on strong points of both, so i guess, youre right, lets pray for his health, though i think he is still okay hehe, its just, its not easy to write hxh, its easily one of the most complex anime ever created, ever!
(But my top pick as of now is still fmab)

iutub eraccount I really don’t feel like doing a big paragraph like you did so I’ll just summarize my points.
The hxh 2011 did better in animating the fights like Kurapika vs Uvo, Uvogin’s requiem and Hisoka vs Gon. There are lots of censorship that I wish wasn’t there but with the circumstances these days, those censorships were necessary which is probably why we’ll never get a good Berserk anime adaptation. I believe 2011 looked more visually stunning and appealing overall because the old 90’s animation style really doesn’t appeal to me. They picked really good choices for the music in the fights in Uvo’s requiem and Meruem vs Netero.
But still, despite our different opinions, I guess we can all agree that Hunter x Hunter is a masterpiece and we wish for the best of the Author’s good health and the continuation of Hunter x Hunter.

Just want to say, if you haven't already read passed the end of 2011, the arc after is the equivalent to Kurapika's Chimera Ant. Worth noting if he's your favorite of the four.
The downside is it's ongoing and Togashi goes on many very long hiatuses. Since it's incredibly dense, I tend to require a reread each time he releases a new batch.

Departure never got old for me, idk why. I just found it lit how they managed to make the animation so cool each time. I also liked the 2011’s art a bit more, and Kurapika’s scarlet eyes actually looked like something that would draw people to buy them, while the 1999 one they looked cool when Kurapika threatened the guy trying to shoot him at the Yorknew Auction

I personally have a hard time believing that the fluidity of the animation for 2011 could be topped by the 1999 version. I also personally prefer the brighter colors and the 2011 version. And lastly I personally prefer whichever anime is more cannon to the manga. However, After I complete the Chimara Ant arc and the final Chairman Election Arc of 2011, I will definitely give 99 a watch as I too have a soft spot for nostalgia.

I love greed island! the stakes are still high with the characters still putting their lives at stakes. And it was a nice breather when you consider the arc that precedes it and the one that happens after it. Also the cards and game system of greed island are really well planned and thought out. The card effects are so interesting and fun that It makes you wish some of the cards existed in real life which makes the reward of taking three cards to the real world even more alluring and worth the trouble of completing the game! Also the further development of nen and the training that happens during the arc did a great job at making nen an even more interesting power system.

This video took the words I’ve wanted to say about Hunter X Hunter right out of my mouth! You and I share the same opinions about 1999 and 2011 very well, but in my honest opinion, I think 1999 was the better anime, but not by much, and it’s believe it or not mostly because of the start!
What makes me tilt to 1999 is the fillers, and all the added detail that makes the overall story feel so much more complete. The Hunter Exam arc’s start in 2011 really disappointed me because 1999 possessed all that extra detail and filler content, whereas 2011 really rushed it, and you couldn’t experience that sensational character development 1999 displayed at the beginning. Hell the 1st episode of 2011 blazed through the 1st THREE episodes of 1999 content, and on top of that, 2011 changed how Gon & Leorio met, along with leaving out the EXTREMELY important detail of how Gon & Kite’s connection came to be. 2011’s little flashback of this moment at the end of the Greed Island arc was nowhere near as good as how 1999 showed this at the very beginning, and so I agree when you say 2011 really missed an opportunity here. I also didn’t like how Gon & Aunt Mito’s relationship was really glossed over in 2011, and you couldn’t feel anywhere close to a level of love that was shown with the 1999 version. All that detail being missed was really disappointing, and I personally believe you have to watch 1999’s start 1st before watching 2011, otherwise I believe it’s harder to understand the story overall.

nice video a interesting overview of both the series :) I watched both the shows and loved em both, despite I slightly prefer the 1999 version for directing/art reasons, for the great fillers (strange to hear a anime filler called great eh? xD) like the island one and Anita's one. Personally, I think most of the big climatic fights are slightly better in the older version (like Kuroro vs Killer Happy Family or the Gon vs KillerPedoClown one) and at least in one case WAY better (I mean, Hanzo vs Gon 1999 wipes the floor with the 2011 version). Also, the 99 Yorkshin City ark opening is fantastic :)
In terms of animation and animation creativity, let's say, the shows are quite on same level, even if probably there are a couple of specific cuts and sequences in the 1999 show that are a bit more experimental (like some fish-eye scenes, or that incredible first person sequence in the hotel hall where all the hand-drawn room rotates with the view)
Ah, I've also noticed some of the clips you used were taken from the channel Italia1. The italian dubbing of HxH 99 was really really good, and it was a bit strange as usually on those channels the voice acting are good but the translations are super censored and dumbed down
(I wanted to mention how friggin terrifying Kurapika's eyes are in the old series, but you already shown THAT scene :P)

  • @astorlefflinker8417
    @astorlefflinker8417 2 года назад +2

First time I've heard of Yorkshin City arc ending being anti-climactic. Out of so many rewatch of that arc in both versions, I've never felt that way since it did so well to set up the Greed Island arc, like gradually setting up the audience for the next arc, and that's what HxH does so well compared to other animes. It doesn't just suddenly put a new arc on the table. That's why it's so unfortunate that the meeting with Kite during Gon's childhood was left out in the 2011 version.
    As for comparisons:
Hunter Exam Arc: 1999 takes the cake. You don't get the feeling that it's rushed. It's more nuanced and darker. And you really get the feel of "hunting" and what the show is really all about even without immersing the audience with nen yet. The 2011 version felt like it just wanted to take the audience fast to the nen part. Also, the 2011 version's censorship was more noticeable in this arc.
Heavens Arena Arc: 2011 is better because it handled the Hisoka vs Castro fight much better. But the other parts, 99 did well too.
Yorkshin City Arc: It's a toss up for me. Both versions did so well. But I prefer the 99 a bit more because, again, the darker theme, the music, especially the opening song fits so well in the arc. Loved the 90s noir vibes in the 99 version for this arc. But I actually prefer the look of the scarlet eyes in the 2011 version because it's more beautiful. You can really understand how collectors would want those eyes in the 2011 version whereas the 99 scarlet eyes just looked straight up frightening.
Greed Island: 2011 wins hands down. The production quality and art style seem to have dipped in the 99 version for this arc, and it's not really the "99 version" anymore because it was released in 2004. There was some delay before it was released and I suspect it had some budget restraints. 2011 handled Greed Island so well that it made me enjoy the arc even though it's my least favorite arc.
As for the music in general, I think 99 is overall better.
And for the mini arcs such as the Zoldyck family arc and the Whale Island arc, I'd say 99 did it slightly better.
Hisoka btw is really scary in the 99 version whereas the 2011 version Hisoka is like a mixture of cool and creepy. 99 Hisoka was just plain creepy which I think suits his character more.

What most young anime watchers don't understand is that. Up until around early 2000's, anime "types" were very distinguishable from their tones. HxH 1999 was very good with it's animation and colors for it's time not to mention how cinematic it looked. I'm not saying that the remake is bad because obviously it's not and it did better in some parts and of course continued the story (but what they did with Gon and Kite's back story was a travesty) but it kinda lost it's unique gritty and dark atmosphere that the original.version had.

a rare case where both the original and the remake are worth watching. 1999 has such a strong aesthetic sense and the characters are really given room to breathe, whereas 2011 is better animated and better paced (and, obviously, more complete). more people will watch 2011, and that's probably good, but i like to think 1999 is different enough that if you like these characters, you will find the original an enjoyable and worthy viewing (though I haven't watched it since the early 2000's!).

I wouldn't recommend doing that since two versions have very different characterizations of the main 4, especially Gon and Killua. You would feel confused and weird if you didn't got to see the foreshadowing of certain character development in 2011 version. The 2011 version might look brighter but it's actually have a darker undertone than the 1999 version if you see how the story play out in full.

Hxh 1999 ended at greed island, as the manga has no new material back then,
Then comes 2011, a hxh remake was made, it covered the older arc up to episode 75, then comes the chimera arc which was not shown in the original version which is the 1999.
      1999 is comprised of :
      62 episodes of anime
      8 episodes of geneiryodan ova
8 episodes of greed island ova
And 14 or 16(no longer sure) episodes of greed island final ova.

also I was really disappointed with how they handled some of the characters in the 2011 ver. like in the 1999 ver u can see Killua's internal struggle with himself, Kurapika's with killing two living people, spiders or not, AND Gon's after Hisoka punched him. Also Leorio is just tossed to the side after the first ark they make him more stupid rather than goofy and (going off what we know in the 2011 ver.) we know more about Neferpitou than we do about one of the 4 MAIN characters of this series.(I'm sorry I just had to get that off my chest)
BUT i like how they handled the heavens arena ark the set up with Gon and Hisoka was perfect (I liked the 2011 ver. hisoka better bc he freaked me out more) and i liked how they did Castro's match (which you don't get to see in the 1999 ver.) I also liked how they handled most of the fights.

A lot of people are saying they like the "darkness" and character development of the 1999 anime more, but I think they're failing to see that at heart, this show centres around a 12-year-old boy. I think the fact that 2011 plays up the child-like and friendly aspect makes the subtle contrast a lot more impactful when the dark events happen, but still never fails to remind us that this show is about a 12-year-old boy who is looking for his dad.
Also, Gon is probably one of the most interesting shounen protagonists out there...he seems so good-hearted and wholesome and caring but in 2011, we really keep getting warnings of his selfish, insane side (e.g. in the Last Mission movie, in the dodgeball tournament when he disregards Killua's hands) and that really makes the Chimera Ant arc a lot more somber and impactful when we finally see his selfish insanity shine through...in stark contrast to other shounen protagonists who are always wholehearted and good and forgiving.
In contrast, Killua is not the darkest character; I would argue Gon is. Superficially, Killua is definitely dark; from an "assassin" family. But at heart, we get to see that despite his tragic upbringing, he's a kid who doesn't know what he wants to do with life (which is why he's following Gon around), is always so self-sacrificing (always the support for Gon to shine, always the brain for Gon to save the day) and just a goodhearted kid despite his dark upbringing. This is a perfect yin and yang to Gon, who superficially seems like a golden boy, but underneath has a lot of darkness. Killua upfront seems to be a dark character, but when you really look at him and place him in context, he's just a smart, kind boy who's looking for purpose in life.

Agreed. I do think the beginning of 2011 is rushed a bit in the first 4 or 5 episodes and when I first watched I had no idea why gon cared so much about Kite so they shouldn’t have cut that first meeting out.
But I agree wholeheartedly that having a light first arc was the correct choice as we’re made to like Gon and show that he was just a boy on an island and had no idea what the world was like. His slow decent made his mental break all the more sad and impactful.

Tbh you're seriously going to hate watching the 2011 version. It's Garbage. They changed the suspenseful music, the voices, the script, and cut up the story line. They made it seem like just another average kid's cartoon on TV. It's literal trash.

in characters grounds and development it's not just kura and leorio who is handled better in 1999 version, the other two of the group too, it did a much better on introducing and grounding other side characters during Hunter exam arc and even some of them got development too
so the main group in 1999 were more fleshed out and their relationships built in more realistic manner, their motivations are more believable and the interactions between them more touching and enjoyable, all that made the characters feels more humans
Couldn't disagree more about how you preferred of '11 fights over '99 version, as example Chrollo vs Zoldycks , Kura vs Uvogin-ofc unless it's subjective pref-, yes maybe in sense of animation a few fights could be better in 2011, but definitely not in directing, storytelling, choreography & storyboard which the classic version shine the most by a light years.
the way 1999 handled most of the highlights moments is so much better in story wise, therefore the results are way more satisfying, it's a lot more than just flued and flashy animation, not to forget the high resolution (FullHD) in 2011 made it look better, when it is truly isn't, not by a lot anyway, if you decided to watch the 1999 version it should be a good quality and clean version, not what you usually find in streaming sites (480p or less) to fully experience the masterwork on visuals and sounds.

Which fights do you like better in 1999? I might agree with you on certain ones because I do agree some are better in 1999 with the storytelling. Gon vs Hanzo in 1999 is leagues better than 2011. I do think Kurapika vs Uvo is better in 1999, but 2011 was better after Uvo was trapped in the chains, and all of Killua's fights are better in 1999.

1999 version was more dark. I believe that’s why they redid it. From the beginning, try removed the animal fried Gon had. Especially since the animal friend was killed. 2011 started off after all that happening. Another is when the guys went to get killua from his home. They changed the torture part between killua and his brother. They have him just sleeping it off in 2011 version, while he’s very interactive with his brother as killua is so used to being tortured that he yawns at it all with a “it’s just a tickle “ attitude. Another is the girl butler. In 1999, she was actually killed rather than the 2011’s being knocked out. Also, the whole fights with Gon’s team against the Zoldek family was removed as well for the 2011 version. Why? I’m not actually sure. Perhaps too violent? But wait, most of the show was violent anyways.

They are both adaptations of the manga. 2011 is more faithful to the manga, has a modern anime feel to it, and is more appealing to look at in general. 1999 had a 90's feel, derives a bit from the manga, but it's all done in service to the the characters being more fleshed out.
