    Leader length and sinkers are key to drifting live bait but you have to watch the speed of the drift too!

    I saw you earlier this year in sacramento at the sportsmans expo. You were talking about bass fishing. You appear to be very knowledgeable and that you also gave great instructions.😊

      I was born and raised here in Sacramento. I was lucky because my dad loved to fish n hunt. So I have been fishing for a long time. I've caught about every kind fish around fresh n salt water. Traveled all over the place to fish or hunt. Costa Rica is probably the furthest away and fishing is unbelievable there. So I try pass along some of the things I have learned for all those years!

    Hi there. I've been watching your videos for a while now and have learned a lot. Im usually a trout guy in nor cal lakes, but want to start ocean fishing. I also do a good amount of crabbing in Tomales bay. I want to fish bodega bay for halibut, lingcod and rock fish.
    Do you have a suggestion for rod, reel and line that would work for all 3? Or should I invest in multiple set ups? Thoughts on braid vs mono? (I always use mono currently)
    Thoughts on rod length? I have a 16ft old fisher boat with not a lot of room. I usually prefer shorter rods because of this, but wondering if im missing out on something. Any incite would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  7 месяцев назад +1

      Phenix makes one of the best rods for halibut fishing Abyss 806 or 807 if your going to use it for lings then get the 807. For reel match the size to the rod and use 50# braid and reel should hold about 300 yds.

    Unclear to me is rig #2. You describe as "sinker on the weight" or "direct to weight". Do you mean the sinker direct to to the three-way swivel and eliminating the 18" drop? Is the leader the same 48" on this rig? Thank you.

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  Год назад

      One rig is the three way with the dropper weight. The other is just a sliding sinker rig, like used for bait fishing the river for stripers.

    How dose the one on that boat work?

      We have it plumbed so when were running the water flows in (gravity) and when were fishing we have a pump

      yes I was using a slider and caught the most. My brother and Denise were using a dropper and they also caught fish.

    Given limited availability of live anchovies at just one SF dock, can you offer tips about the pros and cons of trolling frozen bait for halibut? Doesn’t trolling get harder in deeper water? Don’t trollers catch fewer rays and sharks than do the live bait drifters?

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  Год назад +1

      Yes only one pier has live anchovies. When the halibut were in south bay trolling worked well because you were trolling in 6-15 ft. Now in the central bay your fishing in 25-55 ft so easier to drift. You can drift tray bait also but its not as effective. With live bait you catch everything

    What size hooks do you use

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  Год назад

      I use a size 1 or 1/0 depending on the size of the anchovy and a small treble hook size 4-6.
