Not really, Collins should have let Peter sing the whole song, he is straining to keep pace, whereas Peter sounds very relaxed, more in tune with the song.
I can never get over how utterly beautiful is Peter Gabriel's voice. What a fantastically gifted man, and a wonderful activist for humanitarian issues.
Love this version of Carpet Crawlers. Thank you Genesis for rerecording this song with Peter & Phil's vocals 25 years ago, November 02, 1999. Which happened to be 25 years after it was originally recorded in 1974. 🤯
Great song and video! This version of "Carpet Crawlers" was recorded in 1999 for the 25th anniversary of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (released in 1974), and both Phil and Peter sing on this version.
My father raised me on Genesis. I remember distinctly this album being released; we spent hours listening and just vibing. This song in particular, will always take me to that place. Thank you, Genesis 💕
I love all three almost equally. I think I would not like this version as much if I were not a fan of Gabriel’s solo career. I think it has a very PG flavor to it and that’s fitting.
And there's a fourth version sang by Steve Hackett. It's just called Carpet Crawlers. Very underrated, yet still keeps it dark, as it always has been with Genesis. ruclips.net/video/oBXmXGhEUl8/видео.html
I like the original that really features Peters melody on piano. The lyrics, whew, well can be said about that. What I heard was that it was about Raul being trapped in a room and needing to be eaten by insects to get out. No idea what the superman bit is about.
Anytime I can work it into conversation I like to tell people that Hackett invented the finger tapping style, not Van Halen. Underrated guitar player for sure.

I remember watching this with my late father, when it aired in '99. Almost in tears, I knew this was pretty much the end of the road. My absolute favorite band of my life. Happy I got to see both Peter & Genesis on every tour of the 80's.
I am so happy to have found this. I loved both of their versions. This was a song that made start loving Genesis. I borrowed my older brother's albums. By the time I was old enough to go to concerts, it was 'And then there were three'. I've been a huge fan of Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins ever since.
Absolutely love this. It’s perfect for us to look back on everything about the band. The entire history. All of it. From the 60s Charterhouse days to where we are now with the Last Domino tour. Just such an amazing band.
Oh how I remember my older brother running into my house NYE 99 with this CD and yelled at me to play it & suddenly this version of CC played...Best NYE millennium 2000
Each time i hear this song it feels like Genesis' "end credits" to me. Seeing the images from older music videos near the end always make me wish i knew them earlier.
Same. I’ve always loved Trevor, he’s a great producer and his work with Yes and The Buggles are pretty nice. (His Yes stuff doesn’t beat the stuff with Jon Anderson of course!)
In 1982 I clearly remember saying Genesis should get Trevor Horn to produce them. I've only just found out that he did, with this song. It took 17 years to come true and another 22 years for me to hear it for the first time.
What I love about this video is all the snippets of live footage of both eras of Genesis. Then when you had, what looked like, two younger versions of PG and PC. This is my favorite song from “the Lamb”.
Honestly if this is the last Genesis song ever recorded, I’d be okay with that. They ended with the classic lineup for recording and that’s fair for me.
Bubba Mike To be fair, Steve really got the short end of the stick in a lot group scenarios. It wouldn’t surprise me if he just wasn’t invited to play on the track.
Actually guys, Steve DID play on this. IN an interview he did in 2007 he commented about how the recording process suffered because the guys did not get back together to record in a studio, but rather each man recorded their pieces alone and sent their files to Trevor Horn to piece together into the final product. Steve also says that “I recorded a lot of rhythm heavy guitar work but most of it sadly was left off the final song.” So yes, this was the core iconic lineup, top to bottom, that recorded the original song.
This wasn't my first Genesis album. When I saw them in 73 I bought an album that now is regarded as the 1st I was hooked. The only station that played any rock and roll in Pittsburgh had a strange license. The shut down at sunset. 5:30 in winter. As late as 9PM in summer. Sweet 16 AM. High at the top of the dial.
I'm just hearing this for the first time. I found the link on a list of their 5 best songs. Not sure how I feel about this. The original was like a lullaby.
Yes, I agree. The original was like a lullaby that drew you in because of the piano that’s gone in this version. Peter gets all the credit for the lyrics but he’s never written a melody this beautiful. I’d bet Tony wrote most of the melody for CC, and perhaps all of it. I think it’s a fine remake that sounds wonderful, and I loved that they reunited for it, but it doesn’t create the same magical and emotional connection that the original had. The live Second’s Out version with Phil has more heart than this remake too. It sounds like Peter put the vocals from In Your Eyes right before the chorus starts in this version. Strange.
@@clinteastwood6875 I just looked it up, and Peter did write the main melody so I stand corrected, but Tony and Mike created the chords Peter used to create the melody, so it’s not entirely Peter’s song. Also, I read the intro melody is Tony’s.
The video version completely omits the second verse (sung by Peter): There's only one direction With the faces that I see It's upward to the ceiling Where the chamber's set to be Like a forest fight for sunlight It takes root in every tree They are pulled out by the magnet Believing they're free.
Thank you for pointing this out, I really thought I was missing something here. This is not how it is on the CD, and Peter sings the second verse, not Ray Wilson.
a top 3 is just a box where people in a timeline put a artist. still everybody know phil collins, and his music, even if they are young and don't know his name, when you put on his music it make them smile, that is the bigest compliment you van achieve as artist. i don't even think phil dos not even want to put in a box, he is too cool guy for that
I'll go on record and say that I didn't really care for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was their lead singer. When he left for a solo career and Phil Collins took over as lead singer, that's when I started liking Genesis a lot more. But I also love solo Peter and solo Phil as well, make no mistake about that. And this song utilizes both their vocals perfectly!
I heard this version first on the Genesis Greatest Hits cd back in 1999. Would blast it on my little Chevy speakers. The video makes sense at the beginning 30 sec, but like most music videos it doesn't communicate the vision the song creates. This version they omitted the last verse which takes away from the song and keeps it from being the masterpiece it should be.
Ok, so I love post Gabriel (and pre!) Genesis, and I know there's just no way Peter would have just stayed with Genesis, but it is interesting to think of what they'd have done since then. Gabriel's more modern style meets the classic Genesis sound so perfectly here. Too bad Pete has to be sort of all or nothing kind of guy, and couldn't find much energy to ever revisit Genesis briefly for a new single, album or anything else. On the other hand the collection of Genesis and Genesis-adjacent music is quite a wealth for us listeners...
It is possible his success as a solo artist made him confident enough to never look back on Genesis; he knew he'd already left his print. He did use to play Genesis material in his early tours, but that was because he was at the time mostly remembered as Genesis' first frontman. And now Gabriel is more remembered for being a popular 1980s singer than Genesis' first frontman.
I agree. When this version was released the production, small touches & details blew me away. They missed an good opportunity to rework and produce a reinterpretation with visuals too.
Holy geez, didn't know they made a remake ! This version is by some way more energic than the first, which make me feel peaceful and eventually sleepy. Love both ! But, is it just a remix, or Peter Gabriel really joined again Genesis for this song ?
One thing is right: Collins ang Gabriel voices combines perfectly!

@@tudvalstone Phil sang on the original, dumbass.
@@tudvalstone ...agree to disagree.
Because they both sing in the key of J
Despite Collin's straining his voice, I have to very much agree with you. In this song they did and always have had a great combination.
It's hard to imagine this is a TWENTY year-old remake of a FORTY year-old song.
Putaspellonyou At the time, it was at least 25 years.
Time has been acting weird since 2001
Yeh! Feeling cold and old, getting hard to catch my breath... :o
not only that, but it’s the best version played by men who’s absolutely mastered their craft!
Nice to get PG back with them for this, but it’s not a patch on the original. Change for changes sake has made it disjointed.
