What size socket is needed for the axle nut?
Great video! Today I found my knuckle with exactly the same issue.
I have new bearing (15k miles on it), so it will stay. But! Can I hit it on the four mounting bolts? Just screw them out a few revelations and hit them gently on the heads?
I don't see that being an issue 👍 since it's a relatively new bearing it should come out pretty easy.
I cracked my steering knuckle when i replaced the ball joint. Needed to drive a cold chisel into the slot to open it up. Too much pressure. Probably should've preheated it with the torch.

This same thing just happened to me in my 18 forester. Unfortunately I was driving at the time and the cracked knuckle separated from the ball joint and caused some significant damage that also unfortunately isn't covered by insurance. And since I got it used and non certified I don't have any warranty left. Called Subaru to see if there are any recalls out for this kind of thing but there aren't. Thankfully I have the skills, time and tools to fix it. But I would like to know if you've heard from others if this happens a lot because I haven't found anything. I live in NY so I'm assuming it was caused by hitting potholes and I do a lot of driving on rough roads. Just bad luck
Wow! That's crazy! Glad you're ok. I haven't heard of it being a common issue but it may happen more than we realize. Especially if it's driving fine, it may go unnoticed.
Did you put a load on the suspension 🤔 👀
@@StalltoStart I did not. None of the bolts that were removed require the suspension to be loaded before torquing.
What happens if keep driving with cracked knuckle from the ball joint? I seen my audi has broken knuckle. Is it dangerous to drive?
You should replace it sometime soon. If the knuckle breaks you will lose steering control and can cause an accident. If this happens on the highway it can be really bad.
I'm no good mechanic, but my takeaway is if the ball joint falls out of the steering knuckle, it will cause your front wheel to severely misalign, because the ball joint connects the control arm to the steering knuckle, which is a crucial part of keeping the wheels straight. This can cause your car to abruptly swerve into oncoming traffic with almost no time to react, and limited means of controlling it. Depending which way the affected wheel misaligns, you could also swerve to the right and wind up on the side of the road, hopefully not into a building or ditch.
Now, being on the highway and having this happen while a Semi Truck is in the oncoming lane would pretty much spell immediate death. If you must drive it that way, just be cautious where and how you're driving. If possible, drive gently to prevent putting pressure on the affected wheel (Through means of braking or turning, which shifts the vehicle's weight onto the affected wheel, which can cause the ball joint to fall out.)
If it is broken, how long can the car last in operation?
Good question. It's hard to say. Every bump you hit has the potential of making the crack worse. I would suggest getting it fixed sooner than later.
That "crack" is supposed to be like that. It's a cinch bolt like battery terminals essentially. You pry them apart to get the ball joint out if they don't snap on you.... which they usually do anywhere in the rust belt.
If you fast forward to time index 3:00 you'll see the crack is on the side of the ball joint housing. You're right there is supposed to be a slot in the front where the bolt slides through to pinch the ball joint. The crack in this knuckle though isn't by design.

Can you drive the car with that broken part?
Definitely not. I mean, if you need to go down the street a few blocks at very low speed, like 25 mph type-thing, you'd probably be alright, but I wouldn't take it very far or fast. If that thing breaks completely (and it's under a lot of pressure), your wheel comes off at the bottom and is left dangling.
its caused the the factory torque gun just went ham on these. you know how difficult that lower bj bolt is. they break all the time.
Why not just stick a big screwdriver in the fins of the brake rotor to hold it in place and break it loose with the breaker bar and socket no need to put the wheel back totally unnecessary.
Hey good suggestion. I don't see why that wouldn't work. That would eliminate jacking the car up twice 👍
