Learn to do a 360 on a surfboard

  • To do a 360 there several things you should consider.
    1. Ride a shorter, wider, thicker board so you can practice on smaller softer waves.
    2. Use smaller fins so there is less surface area. I also recommend while learning, remove the back fins and put in a nub.
    3. Speed is your enemy. Make sure you stall or perform the 360 when you are stalled.
    4. Do the 360 at the steepest part of the wave.
    5. Practice on smaller days.
    6. The actual surfing parts.
    a. Keep your board level and flat. Do not do a bottom turn.
    b. Make sure your back foot is placed just behind the front fins but in front of your back fins. Traction pads help with foot placement.
    c. Pick out your section. Making sure it is steep enough to push you back into the wave. If it is too soft, you will just get stuck at the top and pushed out the back.
    d. Lift the nose of your board over the lip line. Again, do not bottom turn. In the video, it looks like I'm applying pressure on the tail but I'm actually lifting my front foot over the lip line. Since the back foot is stiff, there is pressure being applied.
    e. As soon as your board starts to touch the lip line, slide out your back foot, this is a very short instant action, shift your weight to the front.
    f. At this point, all your weight should be on the front of your board. This will level your board. It helps if your board is shorter.
    g. The wave and your fins will reengage and do the rest for you. Just be prepared.
    Hope this helps.

One really important bit about why you should use the right equipment to make it easier on yourself. If you make it harder on yourself, you run the risk of building bad muscle memory. Once the bad technique gets locked in, it will be 10x harder to fix.
I do this with my airs. I have built so much bad muscle memory, I can't seem to fix what I know I'm doing incorrectly.

I was thinking of a short series where I film me trying to learn a air reverse. I have been trying for years now and have only come close once. You think a video like that would be interesting?
funny part about that air which was the first reverse I ever landed but fell soon after was that I dreamt it the night before. It was in my muscle memory but after that day, I didn't surf for 3 weeks, I think covid lockdown. Can't remember. Now i totally forgot how I did it. :(

@@ThomyeSurfs absolutely. I enjoyed the fact that it was technical yet simple and there wasnt a bunch of fluff (plus comedy at the end was classic). You got straight to the point and made it relatable. As a decent late 80's/early 90's kid skater who found surfing in his 20's I've been obsessed with those skate moves on a surfboard (360's, backside alley-oops, tail slides, etc.). I think the air-reverse video would be awesome even though I'm just trying to land a regular air lol. I see in your videos that you have good get up and go speed and can generate momentum which I think is half the battle for most of us.

The hardest part will be that weight transfer, it happens really quick. Just remember, no speed if possible, have your board mid wave or at the point where the top of the wave is at about your thighs, lift your nose up like you are about to kick out, and as soon as you do that, tranfer the weight and put it all up front (another way to put it is go weightless on the back so the fins disengage). Good luck and literally spend the whole day doing it with small fins. :) I did my first, in the white water but it was one of those days where the wave was still forming under the whitewater. You can do it. 🤙

They are also easy to do on take offs of waves that are not too step or to big, as you start dropping in just put your weight forward and kind of kick out you tail as you kind of turn upwards, your fins slide, you get backwards, you stay low and spin around.
Love the feeling of them, once you get one you will understand whats needed and not too hard after that.
I personally think a wider stance also helps, it's really just a 180 slide of the front half of your board like that last slide he does on a skateboard, biggest mistake is people trying to lift their nose and turn off their tail like a skateboard 360.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

agreed. i think people don't unweight their back leg quick enough. it happens so quick. but it is funny that once you do it, you look back and question how you were doing to before that wasn't working. You almost forget.

Outstanding tutorial! And dig the retro skate photos! I’ve done a handful of frontside 360’s here and there, but lack consistency. HUGE takeaway for me here is don’t go so fast 💨 and once I kick the board over 181 degrees on the lip line to remember to unweight my back foot 🦶
