    Aw yeah, I freaking LOVE Final Fantasy III/6! Shelly started off with a great party. Rad too, I mean, Celes is a must. The themes Rad points out in some of these characters, with how personified and relatable they are, I think that's one of the sticking and staying points of FF6.
    The "Double Date"--I like that AND it's a stellar party!
    Ha ha, same here on Setzer; being a Gambit fan (as evident by our TLC image) I wanted to use him all the time, but man, he just never fit my play style and I was so bummed. I remember the nerdy discussions of trying to figure out Gogo's identity. Like, is it maybe Daryl? Or just a crossover from FFV?
    For me, it's often all about that gear too and manipulating it to work no matter your characters. Earrings, Gem Boxes, and Genji Gloves are amazing starts.

      Thank you, mon ami! All three did such an excellent job with their segments! I loved all of their reasonings. Yeah, when Fox came out with the "Double Date" name, I said the same thing, "oohh I like that!" One of the more interesting Gogo theories I've heard was that it was Palom and Porom under all of those rags haha. That one is a little farfetched, but a fun idea nonetheless! And did we meet Gogo on the Phantom Train in the World of Balance as the Siegfred impersonator? The man of mystery is full of sooo much MYSTERY! 😸🔥

    Great video!! My favorite character was Locke. I always enjoyed the hero/thief arc! Kefka was my favorite villain of the series as well. He was just pure chaos. And my favorite party? Cast invisible on the enemy then cast death... Shh..haha😅 When I was younger, I followed walkthroughs and everything to make sure I got every party member and item!

      Thanks Iowa! Locke was a great character and had awesome theme music as well. The insanity of Kefka was off the charts. Especially the Doma scene! And yes!! The Vanish trick! If there was an enemy mob I'd cast Vanish on them all and then X-Zone to wipe them all out in one shot! I truly feel this was the deepest game in the series with all the characters and items and tricks.

  • @thequestingbunny

    I like this video, but I'm sad everyone's teams are so samey!!
    My favorite team is Relm, Strago, Mog, and Cyan.
    Relm has the highest magic stat of anyone in the whole cast. She doesn't learn magic naturally, but if you train her up, she's amazing. And I love Beastmasters, which is what she becomes when you get her proper equipment. She helps Strago learn all the Blue Magic / Lore, which is my favorite kind of magic in Final Fantasy. Yes, it takes work to make them into their best, absolutely, but I find that its worth it. I was raised by a single dad used to give me a lot of shit sometimes, which is another reason why I love them. Plus, I'm an artist, and I work with watercolors. Sure, Strago is her grandpa, but their dynamic reminds me so much of me and my dad. Without my dad around anymore. I dunno, I just feel super drawn to them.
    Mog is the cute lil dancer/dragoon for me. If he not dancing, then he jumping. And he cute. I don't need any more justification. I wish he had more to do in the story.
    Cyan is my favorite character in the story. He loses his family and it tears him up. Going through the Phantom Train, mourning his family, and being lost in nightmares because of his guilt. C'mon! C'MON!! Going back to his castle in the World of Ruin to fight off his nightmares? Don't you wish you could save people trapped in their own depression that way? Go into their minds and kill the demons tormenting them? Cyan is a good person with a good heart, and helping him overcome his pain nets you the Holy Magicite Alexander so you can learn Pearl/Holy. I love that symbolism.

    • @FeralInferno
      @FeralInferno  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hey now, did you get to my section of the video? That team I had back in '95 was too crazy to call and could only be born from someone of my fiery origin! Hahaha. I love the team you presented here. Never knew Relm naturally had the highest magic stat in the game. That's pretty cool! Always liked Grand Train with Strago. There was another Lore ability I liked of his too... was it called White Wind? It was an ability that healed the entire party. I wanted to like Cyan, but he just never fit my play style. Totally agree about Mog, he should've had a bigger role! But he made up for it cuteness. In terms of the partys being samey, I fully expected that. Every game is gonna have their favorites due to multiple factors that make them popular. Great thing about FF6 is that there are SOOOO many characters that are so different from one another. Gives the game a huge amount of replayability to try all the different characters. Thanks for this super detailed comment on your party and for watching, I really appreciate it!

    • @ShellySteamDeck
      @ShellySteamDeck 7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I absolutely love Mog! Also, if I were to select the top characters based on their story alone, my selections would have been completely different. When I was I kid, I actually used Cyan all the time. And his story is one of the best I've experienced in recent memory. As you mentioned, with the loss of his family and going to fight his nightmares in the world of ruin. You're right there with him through it all, and it's a truly heartfelt story.

    I find the lack of Gau disturbing. Take him over sabin, locke or Edgar pretty much every time. If you spend time on the veldt and use rages well he out performs pretty much everyone WoB. He has access to stronger magic damage, a ton of built in defenses and immunities, and charm/entice to cheese literally anything. He also can hit max defense easily since he can equip snow muffler. He's a 3rd reliable source of magic damage/spells in a natural magic game. His equip options are lacking, but the right rages more than make up for it, and as much as stray cat is overused and is worse than many other rages it does a pretty good illumina/ragnarock impersonation as you get further into WoR.
    Also you can cosplay General Leo with the retainer rage from underground castle.

    • @FeralInferno
      @FeralInferno  7 месяцев назад +1

      Gau was super interesting. I did work on learning all of his Rage abilities back in the day but I think I missed maybe like three of them? Cosplay as General Leo.. hmm. Does that mean you get to use Leo's Shock move?! After going through all that to learn nearly all of them, I never really got to experiment with him too much. Chrono Trigger came out soon after and my friend's little sister erased my near 100% of everything completed save file on my FF3 cartridge. Now THAT caused some real rage! Haha

    • @TheOneTrueEfrate
      @TheOneTrueEfrate 7 месяцев назад +2

      @FeralInferno yes. Retainer rage is general Leo's shock. It's defense ignoring always hits damaged based on magic (think mini ultima). If you really want to get fancy merit award gives gau Excalibur, aegis shield and crystal gear with a slot left for a hero ring (offering is wasted on gau when setzer/locke/shadow/cyan needs it more). Retainer also comes with instant death immunity, and a few others IIRC.

    • @TheOneTrueEfrate
      @TheOneTrueEfrate 7 месяцев назад +1

      @Xxesartlu He is the second deepest character muchanically after gogo, but with superior everything to gogo. He take effort, a lot of time on the veldt, and making sure you don't miss important enemy formations. A lot of rages are far from fantastic, but the good ones are very VERY good.

    My favorite Party was Edgar. Sabin I configured to be a dual power house thief to replace not having Locke . Sabin's abilities, combined with dual hitting twice, make him and Edgar a powerhouse Frontline. Then I swap back and forth between Terra and Celes, and Gogo mimics, duplicates all the most powerful abilities, spells, espers, attacks.
    For the end of game final boss battle against Kefka, I like using the painter girl, to paint another gogo, and then both gogo's mimic the ultima's of the ultima casters for 4 ultima's a turn, that go off at same time, for a easy peasy end of game battle.

    So I've been playing FF6 PR for the past few days and I already theorycrafted the 3 parties I'm taking to the final dungeon
    Party1: Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Terra
    Party 2: Setzer, Shadow, Mog, Celes
    Party 3: Gogo, Cyan, Relm, Strago
    Edgar, Mog, and Gogo are going to be built as Dragoons, Sabin is being trained in Magic Power to fully utilize his blitzes, Setzer is being built as a Mage. Everyone else will be built as they usually are. Terra, Celes, Relm, Strago as pure mages. Locke, Shadow, Cyan as physical powerhouses.

    • @FeralInferno

      Yes, this is the way. The final dungeon parties need balance. When I was a kid, I used my main party for one group and left the other groups with the mostly underpowered scraps. If we're talking endgame setups this is my go-to:
    Setzer with Fixed Dice & Master's Scroll is a better choice than Locke. You can still equip him with a shield and do comparable damage.
    Gau with the 255 defense tank setup and broken Rages like Magic Urn & Rafflesia is way better than the Dragoon Edgar setup.
    Terra with the Illumina & Soul of Thamasa setup for dual-casting Ultima.
    Gogo for utility (broken Rages, Steal, etc.) is a better choice than a second basic magic user like Celes because you only get one Soul of Thamasa. He'll be able to cast Ultima as soon as Terra learns it, he can use the Rafflesia Rage, and he can use Steal in place of Locke.

This is going off of a lot of memory going back to the late 90's, but the two things I remember making sure of before taking it on was that I had 8 characters and each of them having more than a 1,000 HP each. Following those guidelines was usually a pretty successful strategy. There is hate for certain characters? Which ones? I love the entire cast! 😺🔥

      @@FeralInferno Well, for example, the author of a walkthrough I'm currently using thinks Cyan is pretty useless, for some reason. I only have 4 or 5 characters so far; like I said, fairly early in the World of Ruin. The reason I want Locke back is that I want to see if he can steal anything good from all these new monsters that are showing up--that and getting access to the Ragnarok Esper and the Cursed Shield...

    • @FeralInferno
      @FeralInferno  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@BigReecey I suppose that's a matter of perspective. As a FF6 purist, I prefer the original SNES version as each new release gets more and more censored. The GBA version has the most content with bonus dungeons and ultimate bosses. And the new Pixel Remaster is there if you want something a little prettier, though I think the upgrades to the visuals kind of takes away from the charm. Stay away from the PS1 version. It's essentially the SNES version with a couple of cutscenes, but the loading times are atrocious. There was a mobile version released several years ago. Never tried it, but the "upgraded" visuals looked awful.

    I don't get why Locke get so much love. He got subpar equip in WoR, unique command is average and with Brigand Glove turn to bad. He need severe equipment investment to make him actually strong. Regarding character development he doesn't get much TBH. It seems he get much development but that's simply because he got a savior complex so he need to be there. Otherwise the only other development he get is with Rachel for like 5 minutes?
    Terra, Celes and Edgar I get. They have useful kit, Celes a bit less because of Runic but it does make some boss battle cake walk like tunnel armor and Kefka at Narshe. They also get development over the course of the game, Edgar a bit less amongst the three of them.
    Setzer got unique equipment choice and as Locke require heavy equipment investment to have his Fight command really usefull. His kit is nice but really random (not talking about slot manipulation here). He got just slightly more or the same character development than Locke. Left to debate. Sabin and Cyan are kinda in the same bag. Nice kit but Sabin take a hit because he can't target and Cyan because i-t-s s-o- s-l-o-w. They both get equal character development IMO.
    Mog and Gau are also similar in such ways. Interesting kit but plagued by randomness. No development beside Gau who get a cute scene with his father. That said, honorable mention to Wind God Gau. Strago is the same with character development but his kit is more useful but require hunting for his skills.
    Gogo, Umaro and Realm. No character development, whatsoever. Terrible kit with Gogo being the exception. Gogo depend entirely on what you equip him (I'll stick with this for now, sorry) and also on who he's with. Can be a really strong kit if planned well.
    Finally Shadow. Subpar equip, interesting kit but uneven result. Character development however... He does not get much directly but if you seek all the dreams sequence and start to dig around. It's deep.

      I think there are reasons why people like who they like. One of the cool things about the cast, for me anyways, was despite how large the cast was, I was never thinking, "crap I'm stuck with this character on my team". Unlike Breath of Fire 3 with Momo. Whenever they stuck her on the team I was dreading her poor hit accuracy. I think that's why we are seeing such variety in the comments. Every character has their specific use. In terms of Locke, specifically, I think people really relate to him. He has a fun sense of humor and the savior complex is quite relatable for those who haven't been able to save someone close to them, whatever that reason may be. You made a lot of good points for all the characters. Who would you choose as your top party of four characters in Final Fantasy VI?
