    Final Fantasy VI and VII were amazing games and each was aided by the appearance of two of the greatest antagonists in the history of gaming; Kefka Palazzo and Sephiroth. But even though the pair appeared in different games, they shared many similarities and throughout this video, we're going to run-through some of the parallels that exist.

    Two incredibly well done antagonists. Kefka does the things he does for no reason other than that he wants to and Sephiroth does what he does because he believes he has to. Kefka is a calculated, god-complex wielding psychopath and Sephiroth is a calculated, god-complex wielding anti-Christ

      Also, Kefka was successful, pretty much. He essentially achieved his goal to the extent that one could imagine possible. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you here- if so I apologise.

    The biggest parallels in human experimentation aren't between Kefka and Sephiroth, but Celes and Sephiroth. The biggest difference is the kind of relationship they had with the respective scientists in charge of that experimentation. Hojo was a hands-off biological father to Sephiroth, while Cid was like a mentor with an kind of familial affection for Celes, unspoken until the World of Ruin.

    It's worth noting that Kefka speaks in many ways in Japanese that are less subtle than they are in English. He uses three distinct self-pronouns and copulas (words for "is").
    He typically uses watashi wa...desu. 私は~です。 when speaking calmly; ore wa...da! 俺は~だ! (or even ore sama 俺様) when angry; bokuchin wa...da zo! ぼくちんは~だぞ! when speaking gleefully or with crazed vigor.
    The first is polite and neutral, the second is violent, aggressive, and sometimes self-aggrandizing, and the third resembles something like a preschooler kicking over his blocks while pretending to be Godzilla. It's interesting to read the script in its original form to see how a former top soldier's mind became shattered into so many different pieces that seemed to be fighting over his own choice of words.

    You should do a video exploring the parallels between Sephiroth and Darth Vader. I've often heard it said that Kefka is The Joker of Final Fantasy while Sephiroth is Vader (besides the obvious fact they're tall, menacing and dress in black.)
    They're both fallen angel-type characters driven insane by dark controlling forces. Sephiroth's razing of Nibelheim echoes Anakin's slaughter of the Jedi Temple. They were both members of an elite order and chafed under the authority of people they deemed inferior (Shinra/Obi-wan.) They both lacked a father growing up and formed an unusual bond with their mothers, which started them on the path to their downfall. Both were created through unnatural means (it's suggested that Palpatine created Anakin.) They were both defeated by the hero shortly after turning evil, leaving them in a weakened state (Anakin was burned on Mustafar, Sephiroth fell into the Lifestream.) Both were arguably puppets of the true villains of their respective stories.
    I'm sure you can find more similarities. The major differences are that Sephiroth has no love interest and seems to be asexual, whereas Anakin's love for his wife was the main reason for his fall, and he doesn't redeem himself by destroying Jenova at the end. Although who knows, that could well happen in the Remake.

    • @JediMB

      I've been referring to Kefka as Darth Joker for a while, personally. He basically has the personality of The Joker but the role of Darth Vader, including betraying his "master" in [what appears to be] the big climax. (Since he's The Joker, though, that just pushes the plot into the World of Ruin instead of a denouement.)
      Recently, I've also taken to referring to Sephiroth as Lavos Jr., since Jenova is basically Lavos and Sephiroth inherits/claims Jenova's role as a planet parasite.

    I love Kefka as a villain about as much as Sephiroth, but only for my nostalgia. He's still a good antagonist who does have some pretty good build-up and is remarkable for being the first Final Fantasy villain that technically wins. And his theme is easily the Magnum Opus of the legendary composer: Nobuo Uematsu. But that's about it. As a character, he's not much more interesting than the Emperor from FFII. Granted, that's only in regards to the original Japanese script, where he wasn't given nearly as good lines as what Ted Woolsey would give in localization. Sephiroth, on the other hand, is fantastic as an antagonist. He's consistently making a presence, maliciously fucking with Cloud's mind, and has more focus on his background, which makes you kind of sorry for him. He was lied to, and was never given mental help he definitely needed. He's still the antagonist and has no remorse for his evildoing, but that thought was always in the back of my mind once I found that out. I still love both as villains.

    I think similarities in originals are that both Villains work by performance. Neither have that deep back-ground search and settle their roles early on. It is how they serve those roles, which make them work. Kefka makes show-biz, Sephy plays by omission, just leaving trails and showcases of power.
    I think Sephiroth suffers a bit from these later pear-selling performances cause those undermine a little bit which made his character interesting in the first place.

  • @tiffyw92
    @tiffyw92 2 года назад +1

    I always like to picture FF characters as if they're Square Enix employees playing roles in the games, but actually being really chill with each other in real life. However, Kefka actually still hates Sephiroth with a vengeance because he was the titular/poster villain of FF until Seph came along and easily nabbed the title for himself. And since then, there's always been this fierce rivalry between them, except Seph legit doesn't care about Kefka and sees him as a bygone era, while Kefka sees him as an undeserving upstart who rode his coattails to success.
    Meanwhile, while Cloud is THE poster boy for the company, he doesn't care about the title and hates all the attention he gets from everyone. He always has to show up at the global game conferences, the autograph booths, so many cross-promos and commercials, etc. It's all such a pain. And it's even more of a pain that he still has to watch out on company grounds for Sephiroth and Kefka because they both hate him for being said poster boy. Terra, while well respected and dearly loved in the ranks herself, is the quiet but hardworking one who keeps to herself most of the time. Naturally, she and Cloud came to have a rather wholesome friendship and she'd even act as his confidant for all his workplace woes.
    Hilarity ensues whenever the four meet in the break room, which happens more often than not.

A genuinely beloved, loyal and noble warrior who suddenly goes off the deep end hard, becoming the starter villain for our main protagonists (as the first boss in Garland’s case, and a previous enemy defeated in backstory in Sephiroth’s), before suddenly being revealed to be back and taking their spot as the central antagonist

    What makes Kefka and Sephiroth great in my opinion is that unlike many of the FF villains, they actually have a relation with the protagonist and their actions are the direct cause of the protagonists’ sufferings.
    For example, Kefka enslaved Terra for years and used her to murder people unwillingly, causing her to have underdeveloped emotional growth and lack of free will or control of her powers. Sephiroth murdered Cloud’s mother, burnt his hometown and nearly killed Tifa.
    Best part is, these 2 villains were themselves also screwed over before they decided to screw with the protagonists. Kefka was similar to Terra in that the experiments performed on him damaged his sanity and his mental health. Sephiroth lost his identity because he found out he was partially the son of an alien.
    Kefka and Sephiroth share many similarities with and have personal connections with their protagonists, and that’s what made them well-written villains to me. You don’t see ExDeath or Cloud of Darkness having a connection to their respective protagonist. All they do is “AAHHAH I am suddenly born powerful. I don’t give a shit about life and I only care about black voids. I’m so generic dark villain”

      Had he never found out, Sephiroth continuing as Shinra's number one lackey is still very bad anyway. They'd just be swapping out the immediate threat with the long term one.

    • @-Keith-
      @-Keith- 2 года назад

      The Jenova cells within Sephiroth would've influenced him towards the same path over a longer time regardless, except that he may not have been the one in control due to failing to understand the connection. Much like how Sephiroth was only able to exert his will over Cloud when Cloud's memories and sense of identity were muddled by Hojo's mako/jenova cell experiments, Sephiroth would've been susceptible to Jenova's corrupting influence and might've had his own will taken over.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 2 года назад

      @@-Keith- I don't think so. One important factor that prevents Jenova's influence/Reunion Instinct from corrupting the various Soldiers across all classes, including Sephiroth, was their relatively strong will. A person has to be a somewhat poor state and mentally unfit to succumb to it.
      This is the reason why the test subjects for Hojo's Reunion theory were comprised of survivors from the Nibelheim incident and other weak people. They were far from being in the best condition, both physically and mentally, so he knew that putting them through the same process as what makes Soldiers would guarantee to damage their minds instead, thus rendering them susceptible to the Reunion Instinct.
      Even when Sephiroth himself took control of it, his influence didn't manage to corrupt Soldiers either. The only noticeable effect shown in the game was one ex-Soldier working in Junon feeling compelled to start wearing a black cloak later in the game (a humorous gag btw). However, he never became a mindless drone and went off for the Reunion.
      With all that said, VII Remake does introduce a bit of backstory for one of the test subjects/Sephiroth copies shown in Part 1, stating that he himself used to be in Soldier. This indicates that, with enough trauma, it might be possible for them to become weak enough to fall under control. As such, it could be possible for Sephiroth to wind up in a similar situation if he were to have been rendered catatonic or something, depending on just how resistant his mind would've been in such a state. However, if he were to have remained as he was without ever falling into such a condition, Jenova's influence would probably never have an effect.

    • @-Keith-
      @-Keith- 2 года назад

      @@Sawngawkuh Let me clarify, I was talking about a timeframe of years to decades for the corrupting influence to take effect. By the events of the Nibelheim incident, Sephiroth was already described as cold and disconnected, and showed an increasing love of battle. He was already considering retiring from Shinra over the Angeal and Genesis incidents which had a significant effect on his personality. Hojo certainly would've still run experiments on Jenova's body as well in an attempt to fulfill his reunion theory.
      And all this time, Jenova was in a state of stasis. Without the knowledge of his connection to Jenova, Sephiroth was unable to exert his will upon her. It was only after learning the truth that he was able to recognize the connection and exploit it. What happens if/when Jenova's body were to wake up on its own, rather than being awoken by Sephiroth's will from the lifestream? Doubtless she would've been able to exert an even greater influence over those who had her cells within them. Even in the current timeline with Sephiroth exerting his will upon Jenova, he still takes up the desire to use the planet as a vessel to travel the cosmos in order to drain other planets of their life energy. This was never HIS goal, this was Jenova's desire and influence manifesting itself upon Sephiroth even though he's the one in control.
      So I find it very likely that even with a strong will, an unaware Sephiroth would still gradually decline into madness. Especially if/when Jenova regained consciousness on its own.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 2 года назад

      @@-Keith- Problem with this is that it's based on conjecture, since it was never established if Jenova's will was that much stronger when out of stasis, or if her cells led to a long term, gradual corrosive influence on people.
      Sephiroth's demeanor during his time prior to his turn wasn't the product of his nature, but because he was raised as Shinra's number one lapdog, and had an underlying superiority complex brought about by him growing up thinking he had a special existence, which he himself confessed. Then he kept latching onto justifications to assert his superiority over others after being unable to cope with being the product of an experiment. Initially, he believed it was his right to rule over the world when he still thought he was an Ancient. Then, he wanted to become a god after learning the truth during his time in the Lifestream and absorbing a lot of knowledge and spiritual energy within it. He even brags about being superior to both humans and the Cetra after Aerith states he's not an Ancient at the TotA.
      Ultimately, while on the surface it seems awfully convenient and suspicious, him becoming Jenova's successor is less of an influence and more of a thematic element in the story, where Sephiroth's sense of superiority and hunger for more power wound up making him the absolute extreme of what Shinra and Jenova were doing to the world the past.

    It's lost on many people that Sephiroth is not remembered for his witty banter, his moral questions, or his long-term success.
    *He is remembered for how he makes the player feel.*
    Kefka kicked the world's shit six ways to Sunday. Sephiroth kicked _the party._
    In the course of his career and subsequent conquest, Sephiroth reduced Yuffie's fatherland to a Shinra playground, murdered Tifa's only family with fire and steel, mindfucked Cloud into doing his bidding, and (most shockingly) cut down the party's own Aerith in cold blood. Vincent also got cucked by Hojo so Sephiroth could be born, and Barret has a daughter counting on him to save the world. Sephiroth may be one-note in a bubble, but the player characters' horror and rage speak _volumes._ Hence they put aside the war on Shinra, ostensibly the _main_ quest, just to chase one man to the ends of the earth and end his madness once and for all.
    Kefka is written as a villain. Sephiroth is written as a monster to be hunted down and destroyed.
