    I also always found the parallels between Zidane and Vivi interesting. Both these characters learn that they were created for the purpose of destruction, but they both react to this revelation very differently. Zidane withdraws into himself and pushes his friends away, while Vivi sort of understands that he can still be whoever he wants to, so he chooses to be a person who protects his friends. I always loved that the younger character has the more mature reaction

      Also the fact Vivi dies at the end of FF9 after learning how short the Black Mage’s lifespan is. Then, in Pandemonium Garland basically tells Zidane he’s immortal.

      Vivi had internalized his agency, having already had it questioned over and over again throughout his story. Zidane had learned to rely on his agency such that its questioning revealed it to be the cornerstone of his psyche.
      So Vivi knew no one could force his hands, while Zidane just didn't want to hurt anyone.

    • @eldenlion5850
      @eldenlion5850 Год назад +1

      Tbf Zidane had lived for 16 years always wondering where he came from, and then suddenly had it all dropped on him that he was intended to be the angel of death that would lay waste to Gaia all for Terras sake. What makes his and Vivis reactions so different is Vivi had Zidane there to help him work through the heavy stuff and in time was able to process the reality he lived in, whereas with Zidanes moment he was alone and with as much as it was to take in, his first reaction was to attack Garland, which is why we get that big moment shortly after and we finally see him at his lowest.
      Side note: That scene is one of the series best imo.

    The interesting thing about Kuja is he has parallels to so many of the characters in the party. A lot of the party are either loners, figuring out their identity and where they fit in the world and life or have been cut off from a community of people they have most in common- minus Quina, I kind of love them but never really understood what I could say about their character.
    And I think that’s what makes a lot of final fantasy games work, hashtag not all final fantasies because I hate when people reduce them all to “you kill god”- congrats you played 10- but I think a lot of final fantasies have an antagonist who is disconnected from humanity. They’re either manifestations of darkness and evil in some older final fantasies but a lot of them have someone who may have at one point been a person, that’s been twisted by forces against their will and in a desperate and crazed attempt to topple this they pursue a god like status of power. Kuja does it, Sephiroth does it, Kefka, Ultimecia etc and the party of playable characters are often a ragtag bunch of misfits who find community in each other and support each other against hardships that are either similar or straight up identical to what the antagonist has.
    I think that’s what makes final fantasy work when you’re reminded of humanity.

      Just to add to what you said about the villains Ardyn definitely fits that category. Not in the same light of being twisted by forces but Vayne was also just a normal guy and not a manifestation of evil or such. So a thought while watching this... I wonder if there are traits that Kuja has that every cast member serves as a counterpoint to. Kuja deals with the realization of his short lifespan by reacting violently while Vivi acts with curiosity and compassion. Kuja and Quina both are singularly focused but to different ends. Kuja and Eiko have spent most of their lives alone. Kuja and Quinna are both passionate and singularly focused. Kuja and Freya are both (this is a bit of a stretch) cast aside and having to deal with the sadness of losing the one thing that was most important to them.

    • @MoreImbaThanYou
      @MoreImbaThanYou 8 месяцев назад +2

      I think Zidanes, garnets and Vivis parallells are pretty obvious.
      Steiner lives his life in pure loyalty, until he discovers that sometimes he has to disobey orders in order to protect what he loves. Kujas disobediance comes not from love, but envy, bitterness and lust for revenge.
      Freya lost her home - just like Kuja did. But unlike him, she looks forward, seeking the love she once had in her life.
      Eiko, just like Freya, lost pretty much everything. But she found a support system. First, in the moogles living with her, then in the protagonists group and lastly by being adopted by Cid. Kuja never had any social support system to begin with.
      Amarant is a loner and pretty much a nihilist. But, similar to Eiko, once he gains a support system, he realizes that some things are worth fighting for.
      Quina is a metaphor for enjoyment of what life has to offer. He sees the world as a giant buffet, with so much to discover and to enjoy. Meanwhile Kuja is hyper fixated on one thing only: Getting revenge on his father, dwelling in bitterness and anger.

    I love your analyses; I can't stop thinking about the video of Yuna and Seymour's similar parallels. And I love this concept so much, because as a storytelling device, it so very well represents the notion of yin and yang. The opposing forces work so well to create powerful foils for a main character in a variety of ways. Where the masculine force Yang represents light and positivity (often goodness though not definitively so), the force Yin is used in FFIX and other FFs to represent feminine energy, and a sinister darkness (among other features) but NOT both at the same time. What's important is that the things Yin represents are not equated (feminine does not also equal negative or dark); but rather, the Yin of Garnet's feminine presence is just as much a foil to Zidane's Yang as Kuja's Yin, which is more negative and dark. It is because these two representations of opposing energies are so different that they work so well to create two very powerful foil characters for Zidane. Garnet and Kuja both work as opposing forces to Zidane and they work so well because they pull him in different directions. As an ally with a vastly different outlook on life, Garnet scares and intrigues Zidane as he learns to protect-- and be protected by-- her as an ally. As an enemy, Kuja brings out the worst in what Goku-- I mean Zidane-- could have become if his past had differed; and Zidane learns how to grow more alike and apart from Kuja at the same time, in order to both fight for what is right and find the inner strength to do so effectively.
    The obviously controversial pairing of feminine and darker energies is addressed most beautifully in FFX, where the main character Yuna (she is absolutely the main character of that story, Tidus is just the player character) canonically represents the moon to Tidus's sun, and obviously a feminine energy. Her Yin also brings a sense of darkness that comes from her struggle rather than from her self. She is not a dark or negative character, but her destiny is so dark and sinister (doomed to sacrifice herself to defeat Sin) and the purpose of her arc is to fight this darkness. Tidus's Yang brings a lightness to her life that she is convinced she may never have found without him. And at the same time, her second foil, Seymour, represents an alternate option of hope when she considers the strength of their union, via a marriage which would obviously be both a masculine presence and a ray of light to shine through her dark destiny. This is what is so powerful about the dual-foil structure that FF games are so good at. It is not Tidus who drives the final solution; it's Yuna's determination to find an eternal calm (Tidus's vastly different outlook on life just pulls her in her growth toward that goal). And it is not Seymour who represents the biggest threat to Yuna's victory; it is Sin/Yu Yevon, the enemy Yuna was born to defeat in the first place (Seymour just represents how far someone in Yuna's position could fall if her moral compass was not so strong). It is because she is pulled by these opposing forces in such different directions that she becomes one of, if not the best main characters in any FF game. Her arc is hard, and she has to sacrifice so much to find her way. It takes someone as strong as Yuna to make it through and even bring her guardians safely along the way, despite her loss of both Seymour and Tidus in the end.

    The parallels are great! You keep implying that Kuja had the Trance power within him the whole time, but he doesn't have the power deep within him. His emotions are bugged. He DOES learn to be a vessel for the power (like you said), but powered by Queen Brahne and the dead souls from the Invincible. It's not technically HIS Trance power that he finally gets to use. It's implied to be Brahne's Trance and he's just weaponizing it with his own body.

    • @gbcls
      @gbcls 3 года назад +3

      I always thought everyone has trance But he doesn't have the emotions to unlock it, as that was the crux of it.
      The souls he absorb definitely empower him but the main purpose of them is to unlock his trance via the emotions he lacks. Queen Brahne's hunger for power grew so strong that even Beatrix at one point described the queen as unrecognizable (it was her or steiner) so when he absorbed her in such an emotionally overwhelmed state he could sense her more clearly among all the other souls

    • @Merlandese
      @Merlandese 3 года назад +1

      @@gbcls I think everyone does have Trance except for him and probably the other lesser genomes/constructs. If anything, he and he alone DOESN'T have access to Trance because of his defects/creation, and that's why he has to use his inherent genome power of absorbing souls to gain access to Brahne's and the others'.
      But even if everyone has Trance power and he just needs to get emotional enough by using the anger of Brahne, that would lessen the parallel, because then he's no different from any other townsperson who just hasn't accessed their Trance.

    • @gbcls
      @gbcls 3 года назад +3

      @@Merlandese I think we are just looking at this from 2 different points (start vs end). I find the significance in that Garnet is robbed of her heritage since birth as Kuja is robbed of his emotions (born with them spliced out via Garland) this robbed both of them of something very important to them later on.
      For Garnet her eidolons become the crux of empowering herself to try and save everyone. Going as far as summoning Alexander. For Kuja realizing trance is an option is a way for him to liberate and vindicate himself against Garland.
      One awakens to the desire to protect and the other for revenge Edit: also in regards to everyone else i think it strikes different as the average Joe worker wouldn't even think of trance. Kuja actively knows he has been robbed of that option as the defect he is described as early on.... I mean the person who defected him actively trashes him for it.

    • @Merlandese
      @Merlandese 3 года назад

      @@gbcls We are thinking a little differently maybe, because I agree with what you're saying in general about the parallel of the emotion. More mechanically though, I just mean that he doesn't have Trance at ALL. Like, this isn't just some thing where he needs to find ammo for his deep-seated gun, his dilemma is that he HAS no gun. When he goes into Trance, he isn't tapping into his sacred power the same way that Garnet is when she summons. He's instead stealing other power and using himself as a container for it.
      All the protection and revenge stuff I agree with, there's a nice parallel. But his incapability and defects are what makes him interesting, and Brahne's soul granting the power is also great. It's not just that he doesn't have enough soul juice, otherwise he could have filled up the tank way earlier.

    • @gbcls
      @gbcls 3 года назад

      @@Merlandese Yeah, that's where we agree to disagree. I see it as something written off until he sees Mog trance into an eidolon. Some even allude to his trance as a super trance because of all the ammo being pushed into it (like an entire world's worth of emotions). My thought is if he never had the potential for trance he would have never unlocked it no matter how many souls he absorbed. Garland neutered his emotions to deny him access to that trance because I think he was already intimidated by Kujas natural ability

    FFIX Analysis parallels? Say it isn’t so! I like to analyze Kuja’s parallel to Vivi because since both are created to destroy but both have interesting reactions to death. Because Vivi is a child accepts it like an adult whereas an adult like Kuja denies it like a child. I did loved this analysis on Garnet, but then again she’s my favorite FF character.

  • @aliciaerjavec
    @aliciaerjavec 3 года назад

    I know many comments are saying Kuja is more sadistic than masochistic, and while I absolutely agree- even the Dissidia games themselves even describe him as a sadist- I think there is a bit of him that IS masochistic. Especially in Opera Omnia Act 2 Chapter 3. When he is facing the soulcage by himself and Zidane & co. come to his aid, Steiner and Freya are the ones who ask him “Are you doing this by yourself / Is this you taking responsibility?” Meaning, is this how you view atonement. The others have already forgiven him for the sins he committed on Gaia, but that isn’t what Kuja anticipated from them. He expected something akin to a proper punishment, something lower than a death sentence since that’s already been bestowed upon him by Garland. So, he went and found it on his own. If they won’t treat him like a criminal, he’ll do that himself to make up for what he’s done in the past (especially since certain villains have been told their end game fates). So even if the others aren’t necessarily wanting Kuja to do something like this to himself, he feels as though he has to because of that reason.
    This might just be me taking that chapter a little too seriously, but I do think there are some hints of post-FFIX Kuja being a masochist in some manner.

    I really wish they would've explained away brahnes greed and cids lust as byproducts of exposure to mist. Especially Cid could've really used a redemption arc like that. I thought that's what they had planned when I first played but it never got that payoff

    • @lynn740
      @lynn740 3 года назад +2

      Nope. Instead they are just realistically flawed characters...with...parallels.
      Huh, just realized that. Cid and Brahne had a hidden set of messages in the regard too. The latter was consumed by greed and turned on everyone for power. Cid on the other hand, was lustful and could have potentially list himself to that, but Hilda's actions reminded him of his love and brought him back from the spiral he could have easily fallen into otherwise - because we all know that lust is just as bad as greed. It boiled down to the affects of their surroundings helping out as Brahne fell to Kuja's toxic influence in contrast to Cid and Hilda's rightful fury.
      This boils down to same situation, different environment. Makes you wonder how Cid would have driven the story if they had each other's post.
      I'm also curious how it would've gone if Kuja had survived to explore his newfound growth at the end.

    A point that is never really highlighted by anyone about FF9, is that Garnet is actually the hero of the story, at least until the last part of the game (with Garland and Kuja's assault in Memoria's Cristal). Just like Yuna in FFX.
    Garnet is the one taking the initiative of warning other nations how dangerous her mother has become lately and unfortunately she makes it too late each time and cannot prevent the rampages of Lindblum or Burmecia...
    Her biggest mistake, though, is trying or reason her mother herself and she is even stolen more Eons in the process... As a character she really has a good character development, she has to learn realying on her allies, overcoming her guilt and not carry the whole world's pain on her shoulders... Sure she is no sexy model so maybe that's why she is not so popular but I thought she was a great character.
    Had Zidane not instantly fallen in love with her he would have no personal implication in what was going on, at least in the 2/3 of the story. On the other hand, obviously Garnet could never have made it surviving and ensuring the world's safety on her own. Zidane provided her his own strength and the allies he had before or met during the quest. That's pretty great story telling.

  • @bravo075
    @bravo075 3 года назад +4

    This is why to me Garnet (Dagger) is the real strong female character in FFIX. She's even stronger than Zidane when he went through his "phase".
    I'll never understand why people defend Beatrix, she's a tyrant that murdered hundreds of innocents under Brahne's command - meanwhile Garnet defied her mom's wishes and fought against her.

    • @shizachan8421
      @shizachan8421 2 года назад +1

      I think one reason is, that Beatrix is just cool. She has a great design, a great personality, is well depicted as just one of the strongest characters in the world of that game and she has a great theme. I also feel like she is just such a quintessentially final fantasy kind of character. The role of an actually noble general who serves as the head of the enemy forces is just a staple of the series, since General Leo in FF6

    I strongly disagree with many of the things in this video. Garnet/Dagger has more parallels with Eiko. There's little to parallel Garnet with Kuja.

    • @MissDerpina2606
      @MissDerpina2606 9 месяцев назад

      To list out the parallels between Garnet/Dagger and Eiko.
      1. Both are from Madain Sari.
      2. Both lost families at age 6.
      3. Both were adopted by a couple at age of 6 after losing their families.
      4. Both summon Eidolons.
      5. Both wear similar style of outfits (Bodysuits/jumpsuits over a top).
      6. Both have Zidane as their love interest.
      Also, Kuja wasn't adopted by Garland. Garland wasn't a father like figure to Kuja. He was more like his superior.
      Garnet wasn't rebelling against her mother like Kuja did. She wasn't fighting for freedom. She sensed something sinister in her mother and that's why she was against her. Kuja rebelled against Garland more out of self-interest. Garnet wanted to protect people from harm. Kuja simply wanted to be free and to live forever. In the end, Kuja accepted his fate and I guess he decided to save Zidane and the others because he empathized with them. Necron wanted to kill Zidane and his friends and Zidane was against it, saying he wanted to live. Kuja likely heard him and so decided to help them.

      @@Walamonga1313 yeah, I didn’t find Kuja to be forgettable at all, in fact he’s probably my favorite FF villain by miles. He’s got the theatrical nature and psychopathic desire to kill like Kefka, but he’s looming in the background and sympathetic like Sephiroth. He’s also just generally an interesting character and far more complex than either of the two villains I’ve already mentioned, and I think his design’s awesome.
      In fact, Kuja and Sephiroth go through almost exact opposite character arcs, with Sephiroth being good at one point, and going batshit when he finds out how he was given life. Kuja, in complete total contrast, was evil from the start, goes batshit when finding out how he will die, but eventually regrets his past actions after that point, becoming good
