Final Fantasy IX featured a fantastic cast of characters, but none were quite as unique as Freya Crescent. Her journey was something special, as it showed moments of strength and vulnerability and her relationship with Fratley was unlike anything every seen before.

@@lambdafish291 on that we disagree. The spirits were an absolutely horrible addition and they completely ruin the game. They were added as a means to pad out the story in all the wrong ways

Kain is such a badass in my eyes that he is not a Dragoon, he is his own job.
She has one of my favourite musical themes in the whole series

She was one of my most favorite characters in the entire series and I hope she gets more attention if there is a remake of nine someday.

I love Freya, from her unique design to her badass gameplay. I also wish her storyline was longer. One of the things I want for the IX Remake is for her to have a solo fight with Beatrix as a post game boss so they can settle things at least.
I was hoping that there would be a clash between sir fratley and beatrix throughout the story..but it didn't happen
Freya was the key component I was missing that helped seal my Ozma strategy. Dragon's Crest is OP as hell. Before that, I thought her to be a mostly throwaway character. Her plot story is interesting but concludes relatively early in the game.
Same for Steiner actually. They resolved way too quick and suddenly we are chasing Kuja. At least its better than Amarant. I still dont know why he is there over Beatrix
Eternal love for Freya. I’ve never felt her character’s arc was forgotten. She perfectly embodies despair to me, and the lack of character development after Celyra made me sit with the feeling of wanting more, wanting closure. Despair.
I love Dragoons and Freya is one of my absolute favorites.
@ragna6410 +1. Even though I only played this game once. Freya is the only one that I remember liking the most. Her being a Dragoon/Lancer doesn't hurt either. I gotta get a copy of this game! It's been over 20 years!
Freya is one of my favorite characters in the series. She is not only strong in combat, she is a great and loyal friend that persevered through so much. I am so glad she ended up with Fratley at the end. She deserved it after surviving such loss.

As a writer I’ve actually inspired a character by Freya. Theirs allot of amazing characters in fiction as a whole especially in fantasy. But theirs something special about Freya that I can’t explain. This character will become a reality one day.
Now imagine voice acting for every character in the game! 👀 the stories deserve that type of love

I've always had love for Freya. The way you spelled her story really helped me to understand exactly why. All the stories for the "side characters" is why 9 will always be my favorite

We need the Burmecian race in FFXIV. It'd be so fun to play a type of Dragoon not lore wise tied to Elezen or Hyur.
Also, I view Freya's story as one that is both tied to complete love and that of complete loyalty. And when it came to naught after Gungnir laid waste to Burmecia once she found out Fratley lost his memory she had a choice between sorrow or vengence or even continued loyalty to both her love and lost country.
I can say, from personal experience, that grievous loss can cause more inner turmoil than meets the eye. And the way SE handled Freya in this facet was 5 star levels of greatness. It is hard to pull this off without it coming off as "edgy".
That would be awesome I hope Yoshi-P can add race like Burmecian Race and also Genome Race Like Zidane, Kuja and Mikoto.
I love FFIX I really hope Freya in the Final Fantasy IX Remake fleshes her arc even more.

Finally, I can watch this video. I just completed FF9 about 2 hours earlier and have been dying to watch it since I saw it dropped, for how much I was loving Freya during my playthrough. What Ana amazing story, I won't ever forget.

Ever since I played Final Fantasy IX on my Xbox, Freya became one of my favorite characters. In fact, I have an image of her as my Xbox background.
She is one of my favorite character in FF9.

She got done the dirtiest as I felt like her arc barely lasted at all and she gets sidelined for a whole chapter.
If one big change that should happen in the FF9 remake, it’s making Freya either as important of a side character as Vivi or fix her arc SQUARE PLEASE IM BEGGING FOR MORE RAT CONTENT.

Great video! Freya is my favorite character in FF9, and as many have said, it sucks how little focus she gets in the latter parts of the story. As an aside, I always felt the Burmecians and Cleyrans were done super dirty in general. If they do a remake, I'd like SE to dedicate some tiny amount of screentime to showing them rebuild, similar to Sector 7 in FF7R
If FFIX does have a remake I sincerely hope to see Freya's story fleshed out

THIS! This is why I love Freya. I always feel the non human characters besides Vivi dont get alot of screen time because the most common "Best FF girls" are for looks.
After Alexandria in Disc 2, Freya Crescent is on hiatus until Disc 3.

Playing FF9 as a teen, I didn't really get the agony that Freya had gone through on multiple levels. Thanks for reminding me that there is much more to her, even if it wasn't verbalized in a lot of dialogue. Your origin stories are my favorite, I'd love if you made more!
Freya is one of my favorite characters within all Final Fantasy games. Her story, her style and her game play mechanics are so great that I always gave her on my team when I replay the game!
Freya's my 2nd favourite character (story wise). But I love having her in my party the most.
It was nice hearing about her. I had always liked having her in my party, I think she got me into my love of Dragoons through XI made cemented it.
When you brought up Beatrix though it got me thinking... Beatrix vs Zenos... Who would win?
FF9 and Freya Crescent defined who I was in high-school. Calm, quiet, very mature for her age and wisdom beyond her years, is what my teachers kept saying to my mom. Freya saw the bigger picture of things, strongly pushing forward towards a greater goal helping other on the way. Freya assisted her King and her people asking for nothing in return, only wanting other to be safe.
I resonated with Freya so much that I cried when Cleyra was destroyed.... she felt everything I did when I was younger, all but love.
I’ve been watching your channel for what feels like forever, and you’ve put an incredible amount of work and dedication into these videos. It’s long over due, but I really appreciate what you do. I love this kind of content, so thank you.

She was definitely one of my favorite characters, as even a younger man I could tell the emotional depth and complexity of her narrative. Sadly she wasn't the MC so of course she didn't get much time in the spotlight, yet still I feel the narrators did her justice by constructing a strong, driven, focused, and at the same time vulnerable and desperate individual who wanted nothing more than to reclaim her love from someone who'd forgotten she even existed. Her bittersweet ending returning to Flatley's side was a tug on the heartstrings; a chance to start anew at the cost of everything that came before.

Great origin highlight, FFU! Freya is a character I honestly forgot about after my first playthrough, but have loved her more and more with every subsequent playthrough.
I've never played FF9, but you did a great job bringing her to life for someone who hasn't played. Really good storytelling!

So worth the wait. Amazing! I see every character in IX as examples of perservering beyond personal anguish and false identifications--acknowledging but not indulging in them--and instead living with purpose and intent. Freya, for me, was about overcoming loss of companionship and country.
Freya ended up being near the top of the list for my favorite character in a FF game. She was such a cool character. I hen she released in DFFOO, I knew I had to have her and she was placed on my main team.

One of my favorite characters! I like her because she decides to follow a path for her own reasons and changes course when life forces her to re-evaluate that path.
Thank you so much for the amazing exploration of my favorite character of all time! You pretty much covered why I adore Freya so much as a character and even pointed something new out to me! I always thought it was weird how she went straight to fighting Amarant in Disc 3's return to Alexandria, but it totally makes sense she was acting irrationally because of everything that happened up to that point!
I hope Square does remake FFIX, because there's so much cut content, especially in the script. And between the cut scenes we do have knowledge of and the localization differences, there's still so much to explore when it comes to Freya!
My girlfriend recently got into FFIX and did her own translation of Freya's scenes to compare the differences between the JP and EN scripts. And there's interesting details in the original Japanese script that infer Freya was banished from Burmecia and she had no desire to return home because of it. Which has her questioning herself when she and the party first arrive there, compared to the English localization where she laments being childish about returning to Burmecia.
Pair that with the cut ATE in Cleyra where she meets the King of Burmecia and he attemptd to apologize for what happened in the past, it paints a new perspective of Freya. My guess is she left Burmecia to search for Fratley, but was banished for abandoning her duty as a Dragoon. But hey, maybe the Remake will expand and explore that!
As a Fighter class picker all my life, Freya is just a perfect example (and Steiner, Beatrix too) that a "fighter" can have a lot of depth in their backstory and can deal with deadly jabs not only physically but also emotionally. Just the best, or one of the best, RPG out there.
Having completed this game 99% and yet I still didn't know one of my favourite characters Freya's lore like this!

Freya is one of my favorite characters in the game, alongside Vivi, Amarant and Zidane with Eiko and Garnet coming real close.
She has been one of my most OP characters in the party, not to mention her limit breaks are insanely broken.

I wish they have done a bit more like given a side quest to collect clues to find Fratley and them duel for her to receive her ultimate weapon, skill and a re newed promise to reunite , but no the mognet side quest needed to be a thing instead

Been rewatching all these origins videos as I reply FF8 for the 1st time on almost a decade. Would love to see a origins ultimecia video if it was possible. Shes one of my favourite villains. FF8 to me has to be hands down my favourite game

Spectacular video. Freya is a wonderful character, and it's frustrating to see her not get the amount of screentime she deserved.
I have to ask, where did most of your information come from, especially her pre-game history? Is there some kind of FF9 Ultimania or other external content somewhere? Or perhaps interpreting dialogue subtext? I can't recall seeing anything like it within the game, unless I wasn't reading as carefully as I should have, and/or there were optional scenes I missed.
Not sure if it has been covered before, but would be cool to see the relationships between summons. For example, how Ifrit recognised Shiva as his rival in the opening battles of ff8

Cases of amnesia and love are a reality for many people every day? Is this not extremely common in MEDIA and far less so in reality? Is this just weird phrasing to say something else? My wife was like "wait, replay that line...wtf did he just say?"

Final Fantasy is hands down the best series of games period. My love for the games has always been great. There are only 3 of them, including spin-offs, that I’ve never beat: III, V and XV. The stories are fantastic, with only a few being convoluted cough XIII series cough. I’m a sucker for turn based combat, so that’s my preferred battle type system. I’m not as big of a fan for other systems like: XII, XV and VII Remake, but they’re still really good. I always look forward to videos you release. I wish you uploaded everyday 😂. Your videos are so well done too

Amongst all character i think freya's arc at the end of disc 1 and beginning of disc 2 is very very interesting, if i may say the best arc between all character. The reason is just like what you sait at the end of the video

The entire theme of a race of rats being so well trained, loving, and cultured reminds me for some reason of the old Frog and Toad stories. I don’t know why, but it may be the blend of creatures that are often deemed disgusting or dirty with beauty, nobility, or whatever great qualities you could think of. I always loved the Burmecia and Clayra stories.
On a separate note, Zidane REALLY reminds me of Goku lol
I mean, he’s a boy with a monkey tail, his Trance is a different transformation than everyone else’s, he’s from another planet, he even fights with a rod. If I were to stretch it a bit more, you can eventually ride on the clouds in either airships or on a chocobo xD

You did my girl freya justice,I watched this 5 times now and honestly I just love freya,character wise and just a soul crushing backstory,I hope the remake will do her justice,freya has suffered hell and back yet she still soldiers on,I've never been so infatuated and sympathetic for a character before but my God freya crescent deserves some love,I'm very happy to see a lot of people also like her and I am blessed to know people do care about freya,I can only hope the remake and the animated series will do her justice,poor freya deserves better,many people may forget her but I won't,a strong and determined woman like her is something to look up to and I for one am glad I found her.....also great vid btw,definitely leaving a like 👍
I'd say that Freya's arcana would be "the Star". At first it's in the reverse polarity at the start of the game because her search of Sir Fratley over the course of three years had not only proven fruitless but was starting to hear rumors of his death. And after learning of Bermecia's destruction and witnessing Cleyra's destruction, Freya must've been falling into despair over her failures.
And when Freya finally met Sir Fratley, she is dismayed to find out that Sir Fratley had lost his memories, Freya would be pushed to a near breaking point. However, instead of giving up on life, Freya was able to regain her composure and press forward now knowing that Sir Fratley was still alive.

i just restarted a play through with my girlfriend who has never played it before. I think she will relate to Freya, bc it's a mature and purposeful love, rather than the youthful uncertainty of Zidane and Dagger
Always liked Freya as a character and as a party member. She was the only reason I beat certain bosses my first time playing FF9 (looking at you Gizamaluke…) and carried me through a lot of the game.
I remember my first blind playthrough as a kid and Gizamaluke destroyed me several times. The reason I finally won was I managed to keep Freya alive long enough to Trance and get her airborne while the rest of the party was KO’d. First time I saw her Trance and she just rained hell on this thing til it dropped dead. After that, new favourite fighter acquired, then on to Burmecia and Cleyra where I began to respect her character as well.
I agree it’s a shame her story arc ends very quick and she isn’t as involved as some of the others after. But I still find myself using her regularly when I replay the game now even though I know Steiner is much more efficient with high damage.
