    0:32 Or the Punies have found a way to produce energy with the Great Tree as I mentioned last time about the Secret Entrance neons - if the X-Nauts took hold of it now that would be a waterproof (pun intended) way to achieve their goals!
    2:32 Yep, I'm also among those that think even the optional partner is better than Flurrie thanks to having a much more useful niche.
    3:10 A status move that, let's not forget, also relies on RNG.
    5:07 Funnily enough the Punies are among the weak points of Goombella's overworld tattles because she can't tell them apart as you can see if you come back after the chapter and tattle them.
    6:12 This has been changed compared to the original as these used to be two separate cutscenes, combining them thanks to this camera movement and showing both when Mario and co. enter the room makes way more sense.
    8:08 It's really weird because the mechanically identical Spiny Flip Lakilester has in 64 can be finished preemptively by pressing A, no clue why Flurrie's Body Slam can't.

    So fun fact about the blue key: For whatever reason, when the Jabbi takes it through the door, it actually stays close enough to reach it with Koops. Does getting the key early acomplish anything big? No, you have to go over there for the Super Boots anyway. But the chest won't have the Blue Key so it can forever be reopened, causing the proceeding cutscene to play out every time. It's pretty humorous.

      Was also curious about this: If you snag the key like this, free the punies, proceed to the bigger Jabbi hive without taking out the smaller one and get the punies locked up, you will hard lock the story progression and the file if you save the game💀

    I will say, Flurrie is definitely the partner I ended up using the least in my casual 100% run, really only whenever I KNOW there's a secret passage I need to blow wind over to discover.
    I know people say Ms Mowz is worse, but for me she was actually a godsent when 100%'ing the Star Pieces because one sniff from her and I knew exactly which screen had a Star Piece or hidden item I didn't get (especially since I can easily tell which screens have renewable "secret" overworld items like the Koopa Leaf in Petalburg so I know which ones can throw off Ms Mowz in the first place). And her ability to steal items from enemies still came in handy a couple times (like taking coins away from a Bandit so he would keep trying to hit me for 1 damage in the Glitz Pit because I needed to get hit 5 times in the fight to rank up but I was so strong that even defending meant the enemies did NO damage, which doesn't count as "getting hit" apparently), and her basic attack pierces defense (thus rendering Flurrie's defense-piercing move kind of a lesser option; unless you're actively using her as a tank as well, which I wasn't, because Bobbery was my go-to HP tank and I also used Koops whenever I strictly needed extra *defense* instead).

      That's exactly why I used Fleep a lot in Super Paper Mario, as he's technically a mix of both of them. He can make enemies dizzy like Flurrie, and he can find hidden objects like Ms. Mowz. Well, unless you need *Tippi* or one of Flamm's *maps* to make something appear first.

    The discussion of Flurrie not being that good in battle made me realize something... she's not really a great character either? Most party members don't get entire chapter-spanning stories like Koops, Vivian, or Bow do, but Flurrie is upstaged for virtually all of Chapter 2 as the 'main deuteragonist' by Punio.

  • @Luigiofthegods
    @Luigiofthegods 3 месяца назад +7

    Still think Flurrie's better than the last two party members at least - there are quite a few inconvenient enemy formations in this game (particularly when there's multiple 7+ HPers in the air) where even a 60% or so chance to Gale Force each enemy can still save a lot of hassle over spending 9 FP to still not quite kill everything or stealing an ok badge sometimes against nonhammer-immune enemies

    One detail I can really appreciate: a lot of the 3D, papery details present look a lot more... presentably papery. The various sculptures around the tree's interior, for example - the folds to form their shapes are a lot more evident, as are the Puni statues that sometimes are on top. Same with the Yux's attack, it looks a lot less weird when it suddenly turns to face Mario from its usual position of looking at the camera. There's like, actual, visible creases and lighting when it "flexes" (ewwww) to fire. It's nice! They've really gone all-out with the visual upgrades in all these remasters...
    ... And I would guess the idea with the Elder's sudden additude shift is to highlight that she's... clearly not a reliable leader (along with the comedy that she's clearly lost some faculties with her age, which... seems to be a running joke in this game?), her completely forgetting information she was just told a few minutes ago. Maybe I'm extrapolating (... as I am wont to do), but it also sort of highlights Punio's sort of... "destiny", in a sense. The Punies are skittish, characteristically noncombative critters, running away or getting caught quite easily. Punio is the one to proclaim that if they all group up, they can take back their home. Classic "becoming a leader" character arc stuff.

    Yeah, Flurrie is bad, but not nearly as bad as the optional party member later on. Unlike them, Flurrie can attack enemies that are hanging onto the railing if you aren’t using Quake Hammer.
    As for Punio and Petuni’s relationship, I think that’s pretty common in Japanese media. Most of the time siblings are depicted as doting on one another, whether it’s the older sibling doing that or the younger sibling.

    I feel the same way about Flurrie being the worst partner in the game. The values I see her having are the ability to hit enemies on the ceiling for free, whereas Mario needs FP and Quake Hammer, but the chapter 4 partner does that too and there's only...2 instances before that partner joins where an enemy will be on the ceiling anyway. She has the highest HP of any partner until the chapter 5 partner joins. A value that gets diminished if you equip Quick Change since then you can just switch to the healthiest partner at any given time (unless Mario acts first I guess). The last value I see her having is honestly just her overworld move, both for the mandatory cases and for stunning enemies but I find enemies in the overworld easy enough to avoid getting first striked and easy enough to first strike that it's not too useful. The hidden partner gets a lot of flak but at least they can get you extra items and/or badges during some fights and their basic attack pierces.

    I agree that Flurrie is the worst partner in the game. Miss Mowz can pierce defence without FP, which is useful for a certain new enemy added, no spoilers, steal badges which is obviously good, and convert FP to HP if your desperate. I use her way, way more than Flurrie,
    Body Slam hits ceiling enemies which is nice...but a certain shadowy partner later on can do the same thing....and you only find regular enemies on the ceiling once. And the second time you have to take them on, you can only use your new partner.
    Lip Lock is okay, but Bobbery fills the tanking role better and has Hold Fast to deal enemy damage back.
    Dodgy Fog is a status move, enough said. Dodgy is okay if you don't have Lucky badges, but its just not that amazing.
    The only thing worthwhile about Flurrie is honestly Gale Force. Flying enemies are super vulnerable, and in the lower floors of the Pit it can be a godsend. Plus, there's a use of it I found to easily grind levels in Chapter 3.
    Step 1: Fight the Wings of Night. Its much easier to do so in the remake, but I won't spoil anything
    Step 2: Use Gale Force to instakill them
    Step 3: Bask in the 20 odd star points you get from them thanks to fighting them a chapter early.
    Step 4: Heal with the locker room bed for free, and repeat. Its a surprisingly effective way to grind early game.

  • @ShycoWar
    @ShycoWar 3 месяца назад +3

    While I'm enclined to agree that Flurrie is the least useful partner, I can't in good conscience say that she's completely useless. Lip Lock has at least a little bit of a niche when it comes to enemies like Spiky Parabuzzies, and her last move actually came in clutch for me against the new superbosses.
    But, yeah, even so, it was always difficult to find a situation where it felt worthwhile to use her over someone else :|

    Lakilester's basic attack could be executed early by pressing the A button, whereas Flurrie's cannot. This is one of my minor nitpicks with this remake (even though I never played the original, I watched several LPs of it). Flurrie's basic attack feels slower than it needs to be, and twice over they missed the chance to fix it by doing something they managed to do before.
    Other than that, I got some uses out of Gale Force against annoying enemy formations, and especially Dodgy Fog, since I'm a sucker for evasion builds, hence why I find Lakilester to be underrated. That and his basic attack dealing indirect damage from any position, a niche utility not covered by the TTYD party.
    Sadly though, I never bothered with Lip Lock or Ms. Mowz's Smooch. My go-to healing moves are the specials.
