It's very worth to also look at the German translations of the team names in Mario Party 8. They are much more focussed on relations between the characters in many parts. Mario and Peach are a "Dream Couple", Mario and Daisy "Sweet Couple", Luigi and Daisy a "Nice Couple". Most interesting in that regard are Daisy and Wario who are literally called "Secret Lovers", putting an entirely different spin on Mario Land 2. Wario and Toadette are "Secret Couple", implying a kind of three-way-relationship between Daisy, Wario and Toadette; Toadette and Daisy are "Power Girlies". There also some names which are either just fun, or hint at relationships of team members towards others, like Luigi and Toadette, who are, depending on how you want to translate it to English, either "Understudies", or "Second Bananas". Daisy and Drybones are called "Obsession with Thinness" (literally translated from "Schlankheitswahn"), and Drybones and Luigi are "Skinny Feet". Daisy and Toad are called "Grinning Shrooms", Peach and Toad are "Misstress and Servant". There's a whole list with all of them; I just picked out some highlights here. www.easyguide.de/wii/mario-party-8/tipps/teamnamen/ That's the list in question.
Don't forget the fact that daisy and peach together are called "wäschemodels" = "underwearmodels". I guess they must have earned the riches for their kingdoms somehow.
Came here to write the BBQ ribs thing exactly. Mario shoots fireballs at Koopas, and seeing as Mario Party 8 was around the time Dry Bowser started appearing in more Mario media, it's possible they saw fit to reference his origin of Bowser boiling in lava here. I guess you never see a fireball melt a Koopa into a Dry Bones (thank God) but it's not that far of a stretch.
Daisy's who thing is being energetic and a little tomboyish, but that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't shy/timid too. The two aren't mutually exclusive characteristics, especially when there is a range of what could count as shy. Maybe Daisy is only shy with love or only timid around Mario or Luigi. Maybe it's that shyness that led her to work with Wario in the first place. Maybe it's not love related at all, and just implies that like Luigi she is afraid of something spooky like ghosts. Her home was overtaken by bats in plans afterall, and bats are spooky too.
Not sure why you're making 'Green Escort' a bad thing. An escort can mean a person who accompanies and protects someone, which is exactly what Luigi does in Peach's case. I also think you misinterpreted Yoshi and Birdo's team name. It's just a reference to their affinity for eggs, there's no negative connotation there.
I think Toadette's relationships might be because of her inviting nature. She seems like the kind of person who would get along with anyone (or mostly anyone)
I feel like if Animal Crossing crossed over for some reason Toadette would team with Isabella. Don't know why, but I feel they'd make an efficient team.
9:20 I love how Luigi and Waluigi are considered “Lean Meanies”. I like to imagine that when working together, they both just go absolutely savage and really competitive as they try to win the Party and become the Superstar team.
Waluigi: Alright, here’s the plan. You focus on making your way to the star, while I focus on making things more difficult for our opponents. Luigi: That’s a pretty good plan Waluigi: Evil Schemes ARE my specialty.
Regarding the 'secret allies' name for Daisy/Wario. Wario is 'Mario' of Sarasaland - he still does heroic stuff but it's for money rather than for the love of the game. I'd imagine Daisy relies on him for the occasional bout of heroics but resents the fact that she has to pay top dollar (coin?) for it. Also considering Wario and Mario's troubled relationship she probably wants to keep this on the down-low for diplomatic reasons.
Green Escort is likely meant to mean the other definition of an Escort. That is... someone who escorts another person to a destination. Luigi being a gentleman would definitely kindly usher Princess Peach to a place she wants to go. Only girls can be tomboys, but I guess Yoshi and Daisy get into mischief together. Which is the trouble. Egg Explosion probably just refers to the fact that they both launch eggs, and the explosion part just means that there's more eggs now that there's 2 launchers of them. Creature Feature probably also refers to the fact that Boo and Blooper are the only characters who float. They're also all white. Fungus Friends isn't really calling Mario a fungus, just that appreciation for fungi are something that he and Toad both have in common. Fan Favorites probably also refers to the MarioxPeach ship, which is a fan favorite.

Toad and Toadette being called “Shroomates” is so adorable, also her and Daisy and Wario is just hilarious to me 💀. When I first heard abt this yesterday I was like “They hang out???” Also I think Toadette is just one of those characters who can be friends with *everybody* bc of how sweet she is. Also I find it funny that Mario Luigi Peach Daisy Wario and Waluigi’s combos just talk abt how good of a ship they’d be, XD
Daisy's personality was changed a lot over time. At the beginning, she was rather quirky and timid, before she eventually became the tomboy we know today
Facts I can see why they made her that way it’s like a polar opposite of peaches personality(except in the movie where they made peach a badass for some reason)
also toadette and yoshi both have the highest speed in mario superstar baseball (idk if that has anything to do with the team name but imo that's rly cool)
A while ago, Matpat did a video on Peachette and her significance, and alluded to the fact that Toadette might be plotting to overthrow Peach and become the next ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. If she's secretly friends with Wario and Bowser Jr., her team names with them support that theory. Because, in order to do so, she would have to deal with Mario, and forming an alliance with Bowser (who has wanted to rule Mushroom Kingdom) and Wario (who is Mario's rival) leads to them being her natural allies.
Interesting thoughts! Just wanted to point out that Bowser Jr. and Koopa Kid are two different characters ^^ but I'd imagine getting to know either one still would better your relation to Bowser
honestly? i'd be hella down to see toadette, wario, and waluigi take over mushroom kingdom in a spin-off where they take everyone by surprise when bowser invades yet again if for no other reason than character development. it'd be fun to see them mess about and having fun with it
I like the idea of toadette being both diplomat and royal advisor, and her team names suggesting positive allyship with everyone, even the more villainous characters, gives credence to it. It’s a fun concept even if it’s not that supported.
Petition for Toadette to be canonized to be at least, like, morally ambiguous, please. That's so fun. Chaotic little mushroom girl commits tax evasion or something, I would PLAY that game.
I think it's really sweet that Luigi and Daisy are described to have a steady relationship. Keep in mind, Sarasaland is pretty far from Mushroom Kingdom so they actually have a steady long-distance relationship
Wait isn’t it a bit of a stretch to say it’s verbatim their personal relationships with each other? Couldn’t it just describe their personalities or even just be flat out puns? Mario and Wario’s for example doesn’t sound like a relationship they personally have with each other. It’s what you would describe them as if you were to look at them
I would really love to see team names for Jamboree. Pauline is my favorite character and I'm really interested to see what her team names would be with Mario, Peach, and Donkey Kong
What is Toadette hiding if the team names of her and Wario are Secret Friends and Double Agents? Is she secretly working with the Wario Bros.? What makes it more surprising is Daisy and Wario making the Secret Allies, making it look like she's in on it, even if she doesn't love Waluigi the way he loves her
Can you imagine a Mario soap drama like this? Mario and Peach are the main couple, but because Mario is always out fighting bad guys, Peach cheates on him with his brother Luigi. Doing so he cheats on his gf Daisy, but their relationship is awkward anyways. Daisy has Luigi, is wanted by Waluigi, but wants Wario. On a weird side adventure they got to know eachother and now they are secret friends while Wario is fighting her bf Luigi and bff Peach. All the while Toadette plays both sides, acting as Peach' advisor whilst siphoning away royal funds to Wario. The potential for drama and plot twists are endless. I haven't even mentioned Bowser or DK yet!
I think I understand BBQ Ribs. People tend to connect Mario with the Mushroom power-up, but really the Mushroom is more related to the series as a whole. In many of the games that aren't platformers, Mario is the character most often associated with the Fire Flower and the element of Fire as a whole (for the good guys, at least, obviously Bowser is associated with Fire as well). I think BBQ Ribs, then, is a reference to Mario's Fire Flower association, since barbecue is cooked over open flame. And of course, Dry Bones is why it's specifically Ribs
For some of the names that don’t make sense, I’m thinking each half represents only that, a half. Like “Shy sidekicks” for example, while yes Luigi could be shy & a sidekick, I think it’s mostly just shy he’s going for since Daisy isn’t, but she still could fit the sidekick part. So Luigi = shy & Daisy = sidekick
I've known Toadette was evil for my entire Nintendo experience, but granted I came onto the scene with Mario party 8 and Mario kart wii (she always seemed so hard to beat, idk why)
7:32 yoshis conically reproduce asexually, and if you look at asexually reproducing lizards, they're commonly referred to as being all female despite not really have gender, so since yoshi uses he/him pronouns he's kind of trans, kind of tomboy energy
I kinda love how Wario is portrayed being welcome enough company by all the female characters while Waluigi is seemingly very much disliked; i think its because Wario is almost nevee seen to be intrested in romance, hes literally so infatuated with his own greed he has no intentions whatsoever to persue a fair maiden. Waluigi on the other hand is constantly shown of as a sort of creepy 'french' romatic stereotype, whos not nearly as shy in his advances as his Green Doppelganger. And i think the reason why Daisy gets along so well with the Anti Bros is because shes technically the 'Wa-peach' of the trio, luckily peach doesnt really have many negatives attributes to be amplified so Daisy simply breaks the 'princess trope' stereotype and acts freely and rambunctiously as she wants without putting on a aura of elegance like her cousin.
Mario and King Boo is actually a reference to King Boo’s debut in Luigi’s Mansion. He was sealed away by Mario in the past and they never explain what this event was since again, this was his debut. Before anyone points out Super Mario Sunshine, that is confirmed to be a creation of Bowser Jr. not the actual King Boo.
Toadette and Wario being secret friends actually makes a lot of sense since not only has Toadette gone treasure hunting with Captain Toad but also in Mario Maker 2’s story mode and Mario and Luigi Paper Jam she talks about how anti Union she is
I always figured Mario and Dry Bones' pair name being "BBQ Ribs" is a reference to how Mario is often associated with fire whenever some games give him powers that aren't power ups (similar to how Luigi is often associated with lightning), hence the "BBQ" part. The "Ribs" part needs no explanation since it's obvious.
Man team names are my most wanted feature to come back to Mario Party, for YEARS now. And seeing Wario/Daisy being secret allies works really well for me, since every game where it's team based, my go-to is Wario/Daisy.
Wow, great video man! Finally, somebody made a video of something I've been noticing on Mario wiki for YEARS! I always found the team names- especially from MP6 and MP8, interesting! FINALLY SOMEONE FINALLY SPEAKS UP ABOUT THE TOADETTE TEAM NAMES!! THAT'S WHY SHE'S MY GOAT 💖 I always LOVE that they made her not what she seems 👀 I always wanna mention the "Secret Friends" or "Diabolical Duo" or how she gets along with Koopa Kid! I'm disappointed they didn't keep this trend in other games 🥲 But I'm honestly surprised there was NO mention on Luigi's team names in MP8! Particularly, with the girls. I ALWAYS found it so fun and interesting that Luigi had some kind of dance with each girl in the game! He's the Waltz Brawlers with Peach, Cha-Cha Chasers with Toadette, Samba Smashers with Birdo... And of course, the most ICONIC and important one: Tango Tanglers with Daisy! 💚🌼 The most romantic of all the dances! 🕺💃 I feel like him doing a waltz with Peach is fitting, cha-cha with Toadette is adorable! And I'd like to think Birdo forced him into doing the samba with her XD Other than that, I think you talked about the important ones!
I wanna know how exactly toadette and wario became "secret friends" and what exactly that entails. All i can imagine is them sitting on a big hill while wario vents his frusterations while toadette listens
Mario & Dry Bones- “Barbecue Ribs” Barbecue ➡️ fire. Mario is commonly associated with fire- from his Fire Flower form to Smash Bros to Mario Kart (his signature item in Double Dash is even a fireball)- and the “ribs” part obviously comes from the Dry Bones being an animate skeleton.
4:59 In various Mario Sports games, Toadette and Yoshi are consistently some of the fastest characters. This is especially true in Mario Baseball where they both are the fastest runners in the game.
6:45 probably could be Mario's association with fire during this peroid, i mean mario and Luigi superstar saga and smash bros brawl both gave him the ability to use fire without the fire flower.
I find it interesting that while Daisy is shown to *DESPISE* Waluigi, hating the thought of almost anything to do with him, she seems to get along perfectly fine with Wario. I always felt that both Daisy and Wario were the most underused characters in the Mario series, as unlike Waluigi, they *do* have established personalities and backstory, but Nintendo for some reason hasn’t used them to their fullest extent yet. The idea of Daisy secretly hanging out with Wario behind the scenes to cause trouble is funny to me.
to explain the secret allies and timid teens it refers to the manga that mario land 2 had where daisy was hypnotized by wario from a scared girl to the daisy we see now.
I really wish Mario party jamboree had a team mode considering there’s game modes filled with players and the buddy system…. But I still love the game so much
With those team names my headcanon is that Toadette keeps a nice, formal face when working with Peach but she is actually a lil gremlin that can let loose with Daisy and Wario.
2:32 I bet this probably was supposed to mean something less, that, probably more something on the line of luigi being someone that protects peach while they go somewhere, y'know an escort mission or something

@@gnomeyt9339On a date with a lesser Luigi 😂😂😂
@@JosephSBrown on a date with better* Luigi
It was Mario Party 8
what is her past?
@@sophia-bt2sz oh yeah, true..completely forgot that!
Now I headcanon that Toaddette has a double life where she goes out with her buddies causing trouble.
wario and toadette probably have a pretty off and on friendship
BBQ ribs is probably referencing mario’s fire powers
Came here to write the BBQ ribs thing exactly. Mario shoots fireballs at Koopas, and seeing as Mario Party 8 was around the time Dry Bowser started appearing in more Mario media, it's possible they saw fit to reference his origin of Bowser boiling in lava here. I guess you never see a fireball melt a Koopa into a Dry Bones (thank God) but it's not that far of a stretch.
are we sure that Mario and Dry bones don't run a grillhouse together?
Daisy's who thing is being energetic and a little tomboyish, but that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't shy/timid too. The two aren't mutually exclusive characteristics, especially when there is a range of what could count as shy. Maybe Daisy is only shy with love or only timid around Mario or Luigi. Maybe it's that shyness that led her to work with Wario in the first place.
Maybe it's not love related at all, and just implies that like Luigi she is afraid of something spooky like ghosts. Her home was overtaken by bats in plans afterall, and bats are spooky too.
She wouldn't be a tom boy if she was shy or timid. Tom boy isn't just a look.
Ya, like "escort missions" in videogames is protecting the npc until they reach their destination... not something... else.
@@Nick-up5wv if mario kart 8dx got a double dash mode toadette and isabelle would make for a fire team
@@davidthecommenter Most Definitely!
9:20 I love how Luigi and Waluigi are considered “Lean Meanies”.
I like to imagine that when working together, they both just go absolutely savage and really competitive as they try to win the Party and become the Superstar team.
Luigi does this by standing there menacingly in minigames, intimidating the opposing team
Waluigi: Alright, here’s the plan. You focus on making your way to the star, while I focus on making things more difficult for our opponents.
Luigi: That’s a pretty good plan
Waluigi: Evil Schemes ARE my specialty.
I think Boo and Blooper should be Tentacruel.😅
@@Nick-up5wv A Pokemon reference in a Mario Party game, interesting
@@tylerlarsen1842 Teqniquelly the mini games in Pokémon Stadium are basically just Mario Party games anyway. About Tomboy Trouble, I considered the idea that maybe Daisy doesn't understand Yoshi's language so she was in trouble trying to figure out a team name 😅

Toadette looking at this shitshow knowing their cover's blown wide open sky high 💀😔✊:
I understood that reference.
6:50 I think “BBQ” ribs refers to Mario’s association with fire and ribs being bones
Another weirdly consistent detail with the Mario Party 8 names is the emphasis on Luigi being a dancer. So many of his team names involve dancing, like the Cha-Cha Chasers with Toadette or the Waltzing Brawlers with Peach.

@@RichterTheRat That's not how unions work. They are not that powerful. Their main purpose is to negotiate fair labor and employment conditions with the employer, but they can't "prevent" someone from getting fired.
She's great to play in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
Facts I can see why they made her that way it’s like a polar opposite of peaches personality(except in the movie where they made peach a badass for some reason)
5:15 she's canonically against unionized workers thanks to smm2, what did you expect
also toadette and yoshi both have the highest speed in mario superstar baseball (idk if that has anything to do with the team name but imo that's rly cool)
9:53 possibly a reference to Super Mario 64 DS? They’re both playable in the game so maybe?
I was thinking the same thing; 64 DS was still fresh at the time, and those two definitely make up the more surprising half of the roster.
The Italian name for the Toad and Toadette team roughly translates to "secret uprisers favoring a country's enemy"
The theory may be real o.o
Interesting thoughts! Just wanted to point out that Bowser Jr. and Koopa Kid are two different characters ^^ but I'd imagine getting to know either one still would better your relation to Bowser
damn and I thought Matpat's "Mario is a psychopath" video was awful
honestly? i'd be hella down to see toadette, wario, and waluigi take over mushroom kingdom in a spin-off where they take everyone by surprise when bowser invades yet again if for no other reason than character development. it'd be fun to see them mess about and having fun with it
"Shy Sidekicks" for Luigi and Daisy seems to be more in line with the earlier French team names for them, "Les Discrets".
She doesn’t like Unions in mario maker 2 so that’s something.
@littlebabyman8494 that's actually so funny
I like the implication that Toadette is just so sweet and lovable that she has no enemies
mario and boo being 'Old Acquaintances' could be a reference to the sidemode in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe where you race a Boo through the levels
8:19 little did I know…. It would be a feature…. A creature feature…. Featuring…. The creature
What is Toadette hiding if the team names of her and Wario are Secret Friends and Double Agents? Is she secretly working with the Wario Bros.? What makes it more surprising is Daisy and Wario making the Secret Allies, making it look like she's in on it, even if she doesn't love Waluigi the way he loves her
Luig and Peach should be called: "Just Friends"
Toadette’s been my favorite video game character since I first saw her, but the implications of her being “evil” is so surprising to me lmao 😭
8:00 toadette may be a UN ally in WW2 turning or tricking XS agents
That Super Crown was far more dangerous than we realized. She’s planning to take Peach’s place.
10:04 This may be in reference to the American children’s television character, Barney the Dinosaur, who is notably purple.
I love the idea that Toadette just manages to be friends with everyone
Peach and Daisy aren't cousins
Toadette the true neutral homie who is friends with everyone.
My favorite mario characters are toadette and petey piranha.
So the fact they can be on the same side make me happy.
6:37 I mean, Mario does sorta shoot fireballs at dry bones on a regular basis
Toadette and Wario being secret friends actually makes a lot of sense since not only has Toadette gone treasure hunting with Captain Toad but also in Mario Maker 2’s story mode and Mario and Luigi Paper Jam she talks about how anti Union she is
3:57 Yoshi’s scientific name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.
Toadette's a menace for society and I always knew it. And I always loved her for it.
7:27 I mean he lays eggs
Maybe "Double Agents" isn't literal, but referencing that Wario and Toadette are both pallette-swapped "doubles" of Mario and Toad?
My guess for BBQ Ribs is a reference to Mario's fire abilities and Dry Bones just being the undead
0:37 MARIO PARTY DS RAHHHHHH
I'm disappointed they didn't keep this trend in other games 🥲
But I'm honestly surprised there was NO mention on Luigi's team names in MP8! 🕺💃
I feel like him doing a waltz with Peach is fitting, cha-cha with Toadette is adorable! And I'd like to think Birdo forced him into doing the samba with her XD Other than that, I think you talked about the important ones!
I like to believe Toadette is just so sweet and friendly she can fw everyone like that
I wanna know how exactly toadette and wario became "secret friends" and what exactly that entails. All i can imagine is them sitting on a big hill while wario vents his frusterations while toadette listens
No mention of Birdo and Dry Bones in Mario Party 8:
“Bone Chokers”
Mario and Dry bones run a grillhouse/BBQ restaurant and you cannot remove that headcanon from my brain.
The most important discovery here is that Dry Bones really likes puns.
Mario & Dry Bones- “Barbecue Ribs”
Barbecue ➡️ fire.
Maybe Toadette is the stand-in for Wapeach with Wario and Waluigi. 🤔
1:56
This kind of implies that Mario was friends with this specific Boo
Before it turned into a Boo
to explain the secret allies and timid teens it refers to the manga that mario land 2 had where daisy was hypnotized by wario from a scared girl to the daisy we see now.
Daisy and Toadette are secret friends with Wario because Wario is the third shopping pal! The secret is that he goes to the coconut mall with them xD
Toadette lore is something I didn't know I needed
I really wish Mario party jamboree had a team mode considering there’s game modes filled with players and the buddy system…. But I still love the game so much
you really look at the daisy and yoshi duo and thought that YOSHI is the tomboy?
With those team names my headcanon is that Toadette keeps a nice, formal face when working with Peach but she is actually a lil gremlin that can let loose with Daisy and Wario.
2:32 I bet this probably was supposed to mean something less, that, probably more something on the line of luigi being someone that protects peach while they go somewhere, y'know an escort mission or something
8:17 CREATURE FEATURE?
"old acquintence" references one line of dialogue from luigi's mansion where king boo implies that Mario caused him trouble in the past
I held an idea in my head for a week that Daisy is brave around everything, except ghosts, so Luigi deals with ghosts for her.
