      @@carlosr192 …about that mayor 😬
Then again, our standards are fairly high; she is known for certain „blunders“ but she‘s not corrupt and she has been mayor since 2015, so she won at least 2 elections meaning she‘s still competent enough to get voted in.
But yea, high standards. „Reker-Länge“ (Reker-length) refers to her telling women how to not get into dangerous situations where they can be abused: simply dont get into arm‘s reach of a man (30-50cm). This happened after a bunch of non-Germans fondled and abused women on new year‘s Eve right in front of the main train station.

My wife and myself visited cologne 3 times between 2008 and 2014, and each of those times we visited the cologne cathedral, or Kőlner Dom, as it is called there. It is so huge, both outside and inside, that it's bigness is incomprehensible until you actually see it with your own eyes. It seemed to me that within the interior of the cathedral at least 2 to 3 ordinary churches, you usually see in the States or Canada, will easily fit in. There are enormous figures of all the apostles of Jesus, both inside and outside. The cathedral is indeed imposing as well as beautiful. No matter where you are cologne, you can always see the tall steeples of Kőlner Dom, and for visitors, that's an easy means to find your way back to the Main Station, because the railway station is located just beside the cologne cathedral.

Köln is beautiful? Really? The only real historic building is the cathedral, most of which, including the spire, was built in the late 19th century. Some of my neighbours live in houses older than most of Cologne Cathedral. There are also a few replicas on the banks of the Rhine, but that's about it.
No real history, no beautiful buildings, everything is a bunch of post-war and brutalist architecture, just like in the Soviet industrial cities.

Düsseldorf is cool, Bonn is relaxed and Cologne is ugly. I lived there for years too. People constantly mention the cathedral and forget how ugly the rest of the city is. Apart from the cathedral, most of which was built between 1840 and 1880, and some replicas of old buildings on the banks of the Rhine, it's just an ugly post-war city, like most German and especially NRW cities and towns.

@@celsiushseries2771 Cologne has beautiful women. Better than LA or NY. I have met some stunners. European women overall are much better than American. I actually like the look of Cologne in comparison to a dull US city. The good thing in the US are the rural areas.

@@user-or6yn8pm3c Everyone knows that LA is the magnet for smoking hot women, it's Hollywood, the sun and the party scene. With all due respect, German women can't be compared to the women in LA, even when Cologne's women are much prettier than the women in most parts of Germany.
And speaking of dull, yes, some US cities may not be that old or historic, but they still have a soul. Some have both the history and the vibe. German cities like Cologne are just full of grey post-war blobs. Cologne's historical monuments don't even compare to those in some cities on the East Coast of the US. Simply put, Cologne was completely destroyed during the war, so most of the old buildings are just replicas, and any buildings still standing are just as old as old buildings in the US, because Germany was urbanised very late in history and the cities were enlarged mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Video's or pictures do not do it justice as it is absolutely tremendous in size with the most minute details. Although GiV does a good job with it here. It also baffles the mind to think how people were able to build such a gorgeous piece of art, especially so long ago. Thank God it was spared the true wrath of the allied bombers during WW2 as most of the city was flattened around it. Anyway, now the city, Germany, and GiV, are stronger than ever.

Cologne Cathedral was built more than a century after the start of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, so the technology was already developed at that time.

You went at the best time to visit Mike, Europe is beautiful I think in late spring and early summer, very fortunate that the church didn’t get destroyed in the war, absolutely beautiful Mike.

Very interesting. Do you have Aldi/Lidl over there? Or are generally able to get approximately the same stuff you could buy back in Germany?
Or is it just the general area where most Germans are living?

      @woxyroxme 2 года назад +1

There are Aldis in Ohio but the best selection of German foods is at Meijer. They are fixing up OTR but it’s still a bad area in a lot of places, at one time it was the most dangerous neighborhood in the US.

I never understood the hype about Cologne, I was disappointed when I first went there. It's full of unpleasant post-war German architecture. The church that gets most of the attention because people think the current structure is medieval is a bit overrated as it was remodelled between 1840 and 1880 and looks nothing like the previous one, there are a also few replicas of old buildings on the banks of the Rhine and that's it.

Because these videos are fun but sincere, honest and human. They do no have all the bureaucratic garbage from German institutions, which present every small grey and dull town as the most dynamic german city...

I was in Cologne back in late Feb 2020 and the Cathedral was closed to the public. Getting back by train during carnival was absolutely nuts. Italy was exploding with Covid cases at the time and i was terrified they'd close all the train stations or something.

That depends on when they came to the USA. The current version of Cologne Cathedral was built between 1840 and 1880. So if they came before 1880, then the building in Cologne was not yet finished.
I know so many Americans who state in the census that they are German, and when we talked they said they were 12.5 per cent German and 75 per cent English, but they still say they are German. I never understood that.
