Duisburg ist the heart of the Ruhr Area. You can smell and see all the hard work the people were doing for decades. And until today the people are direct and open minded in this area. And the harbour ist the biggest non-coastal harbour in Europe. There is so much industrial culture there that a coal mine (Zeche Zollverein in Essen) had become UNESCO world heritage. In Northwestern germany we are very proud of all the historic things in this region. Thank you for visiting North Rine Westfalia and stay safe!!

During WWII the allied leaders specifically told the bomber crews to not hit the Cologne Cathedral since it was culturally significant as well as an easy to see navigation reference point. The rumour is that they ordered the crews to aim for it, knowing that it was unlikely that they would hit it. During WWII the percentage of bombs that actually hit the aim point was surprisingly low, so there may be some truth to that story. One pilot stated that out of some 650 bombs, the odds were that just two would hit within a 400 by 500 foot (35-40 square meters) area.
Thank you for another fun and very interesting video!

Interesting to see your video and your description of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg in 2020 and to see how so much has changed, particularly in Duisburg, because as a Dutch Australian who came to Holland in 1972, I got a job working on the River Rhine barges which meant occasionally tying up in the harbour of Duisburg either to unload or load coal, iron ore or steel etc. Back then that marina where you were moored was full of barges, with cranes busy with activity and smoke stacks belching out all kinds of smells that permeated the atmosphere. It was certainly the most busy industrial inner Rhine port along the full length of the river back then. Thank you for bringing back a bunch of memories of that amazing time in my then young adventurous life which now as I approach 70 years I can look back on with fondness having filled my mind with hundreds of interesting and certainly unforgettable travel experiences and fantastic memories during a period in the 70's and 80's when travelling was so much easier with so much more freedom than today. But I do enjoy watching many young people such as yourselves using the current technology to record your various travel experiences to share with your audiences. Thank you so much.

Again, super narration painting wonderful pictures inside my head. The trouble is, the closer you get to raising the mast the more I want you to turn around, and show us some more of the interior of Europe. I will content myself with watching again 'North through the Continent' to see again the lovely places you have given us a glimpse of. Thank you.

Thank you sweet and brave people. I visited Cologne in the early fifties (I’m old! 🤪) as a little girl with my grandmother on a daytrip from the Netherlands and still have a vivid image of the cathedral standing majesticaly in the middle of the ruins of war. Haven’t been back since. May be I should, after Covid? Welcome to the Netherlands ‘soon’!

A few years ago, my friend and I flew our plane to an airfield near Cologne (Bonn Hangelar) and travelled into the city of Cologne on the train. The Cathedral was stunning, but the rest of the place was a dump. Graffiti all over the place and dark corners smelling of urine and plenty of evidence of drug abuse. It was a big dissapointment. So I congratulate you Maya on managing to see the positive side to the City, although I feel that your tone said more than most people, that haven't been there, would know.

I am a French yachtsman (rivers and canals) and I have followed all the videos of your trip. I find them superb and very interesting.
So I decided to share them on the Facebook group I created a few months ago called "J'aime la Saône".
I started to share one a day since November 1st and I will continue to do so until the end of the series.
Many thanks to you and if you need information about the French river network and mainly about the Saône, don't hesitate to ask me.

I live in Duisburg and the old town isn’t very big or anything but it was so empty because of corona or you stoped there on Sunday. The Marina you landed is renovated and followed by bars and cafes, you could have walk a little further an walk in the City where you find everything! But in the cafe you sat that is not the industrial park that is the innenhafen! The industrial park you crossed with your boat before! But you arrived definitely at the nicest place so far. And for the info duisburg and all the smaller towns around are heavily surrounded by the woods, so I live 5 minutes from the woods and 15 minutes from the harbour! So people might get a false impression. ANd most of the heavy industry as you saw is not working anymore. But very nice to see you here! Now nothing is opened we are in the second big lockdown, so no bars shops or anything, you got lucky!

I briefly lived in Köln in the 1990s and was told by locals that there was a reason the Cathedral was (mostly) spared from bombing in WW2. The story is that both the British and US bombers used the Cathedral as a useful landmark to help guide them from UK airbases to their targets in the nearby Ruhr region, where the heart of Germany's military production resided. (No idea if this supported by reputable WW2 historians, however.)

It's good to look back to the river Rhine!
My childhood hometown Cologne profits in wealth from the medieval looting of the three Magis' relics (5:01 that wee shiny spot in the cathedral is a massive, 220 cm long golden shrine) and IMHO also suffers from the same wealth: To me, the term "ugly" stems from the early and uncoordinated renovations after WWII. It's also unjust as there are many nice places in and around the town.
BTW, we have our own famous love story, not Romeo&Juliet but "Jan and Griet". Allegedly, she refused his advances when they both were farm workers. So he became a soldier, and when he returned many years later, being celebrated as a successful general while she still sold vegetables, they had to admit that it was too late: He told her „Griet, wer et hätt jedonn!“ (If we only had done it!), and she replied „Jan, wer et hätt jewoss!“ (Who would have known!)
This saga may fit to the cavalry general Johann von Werth (1591-1652) who partly fought for Cologne in the Thirty Years' War.
Duisburg used to be busy in the world's biggest domestic port, delivering the produce of the adjacent Ruhrgebiet's heavy industry (coal, steel) to Europe and beyond. The post-industrial charms of the Marina point to a successful change.

My lasting memory of Duisburg is the strong smell of industry drifting over our barracks, but there are more pleasant parts in the form of parks and city centre shopping areas that we both enjoyed. Our Friday and Saturday evenings however, were often spent in the Alt Stadt, Duesseldorf, (Duesseldorf Old Town). The good thing about Duisburg is that is very close to the border with the Netherlands!! Thank you for your videos.

Soot and acid.
We have cleaned up a lot in the past decades to the point humanity produces a lot less fine dust in the atmosphere and now we don't know where global heating comes from.

I could hear the Rhine river flowing,
I was caressed by German air
    And felt its influence growing
    On my appetite. I ate
A ham omelette, which was fine,
But as it was rather salty,
I had to wash it down with wine.
Still in the green glass, like gold,
    The Rhine-wine brightly glows,
And should you drink it in excess,
It begins to tickle your nose!
So sweet a tickling climbs to your nose,
The sensation grows fonder and fonder!
It drove me out in the darkening night,
Through the echoing streets to wander.
And as I walked, I thought I heard
    The ancient houses of stone
Recounting tales of long gone days,
    The legends of holy Cologne:
    Here upon-a-time, the clergy
Once lived and thrived in pious ways,
Here, as described by von Hutten,
Obscure men ruled, in former days,
And here, the nuns and monks once danced
    The cancan of the Middle-Ages,
Here, Hochstraaten, the Menzel of Cologne
    Wrote his poisonous, denunciatory pages.
Here men and books were burnt at the stake
And, by its flames were swallowed,
    Meanwhile the bells merrily rang
And a “ Kyrie Eleison “followed.
    Stupidity and malice here,
    Like street-dogs, used to mate.
One can still tell their progeny today
    By their sectarian hate.
But see! In the clear moonshine there,
    That mighty colossus of stone!
He towers upward, so devilish black:
    The cathedral of Cologne.
It was meant to be the mind’s Bastille,
And the papist plan was clever:
In the huge vaults they would lock
    The German reason forever!
Then Luther came and said: ‘no more!’
    With power, with conviction,
And since that day, there came and end
    To the Cathedral’s erection.
It was never completed- a good thing!
    For its very non-termination
Is a monument to German strength
    And the Protestant reformation.
Poor wretches of the Cathedral Trust,
With powerless hands, you have risen
    To continue the interrupted work
    And complete the old tower-prison!
O foolish illusion! It’s all in vain
    When your alms-bags hungrily shake:
Begging of heretics, even of Jews,
Is but a fruitless and vain mistake.
In vain will the great Franz Liszt play
    To raise the cathedral’s donations,
In vain will a talented king make
    Imploring declamations!
    The cathedral won’t be completed,
Even though Swabian fools will send
A whole ship, loaded with stones,
To bring its building to an end.
    It won’t be completed, regardless
How wild owls and ravens may yell,
Since those birds with old-fashioned minds,
On high church-towers like to dwell.
Indeed, it is possible that some day,
    Instead of completing it outright,
The inner rooms may serve as a stable
For horses- quite and unholy sight!
And should the cathedral becomes a stable,
We’ll have a question to tackle:
What will become of the three holy kings,
    Who rest in the tabernacle?
That is the question. But do we need
To bother solve it this very day?
The three holy kings from the East
Must find somewhere else to stay.
Take my advice and stick them all
    In Münster’s three iron cages
That have hung high from the tower
Of St Lambert’s church for ages.
Once, the Taylor-Kings and his councillors,
Sat each, in a separate cage.
We must use the baskets now
For kings of a different age.
We’ll set Lord Balthasar on the right,
On the left, Lord Melchior, swinging,
Lord Gaspar in between- God knows
How they were set, when living!
The holy alliance of the East,
    Even though canonised today,
    May not have always behaved
In a just and pious way.
Balthasar and Melchior must have been fools,
    Who searched an easy solution
    When their people became demanding,
    And promised them a constitution,
Then failed to deliver. And the Moorish king
    Gaspar, with black ingratitude
    Rewarded his people- such fools!
    For their trusting attitude.
    Original version:
    Getanzt von Nonnen und Mönchen;
Hier schrieb Hochstraaten, der Menzel von Köln,
    Die gift'gen Denunziatiönchen.
Die Flamme des Scheiterhaufens hat hier
    Bücher und Menschen verschlungen;
    Die Glocken wurden geläutet dabei
    Und Kyrie eleison gesungen.
    Dummheit und Bosheit buhlten hier
    Gleich Hunden auf freier Gasse;
Die Enkelbrut erkennt man noch heut
    An ihrem Glaubenshasse.
    Fortsetzen das unterbrochene Werk,
    Und die alte Zwingburg vollenden!
    O törichter Wahn! Vergebens wird
    Geschüttelt der Klingelbeutel,
    Gebettelt bei Ketzern und Juden sogar;
    Ist alles fruchtlos und eitel.
Vergebens wird der große Franz Liszt
    Zum Besten des Doms musizieren,
    Und ein talentvoller König wird
    Vergebens deklamieren!
Er wird nicht vollendet, der Kölner Dom,
    Obgleich die Narren in Schwaben
Zu seinem Fortbau ein ganzes Schiff
    Voll Steine gesendet haben.
Er wird nicht vollendet, trotz allem Geschrei
    Der Raben und der Eulen,
    Die, altertümlich gesinnt, so gern
    In hohen Kirchtürmen weilen
Ja, kommen wird die Zeit sogar,
Wo man, statt ihn zu vollenden,
Die inneren Räume zu einem Stall
    Für Pferde wird verwenden.
»Und wird der Dom ein Pferdestall,
    Was sollen wir dann beginnen
    Versprochen ihrem Reiche,
Und später nicht Wort gehalten - Es hat
Herr Gaspar, der König der Mohren,
    Vielleicht mit schwarzem Undank sogar
    Belohnt sein Volk, die Toren!

Love the street art, mainly because my mind won't twist itself into imagining those kind of images.
When I watch these videos I am not jealous of Magic Carpet, though she is a beauty,
nor am I jealous of the travel, since I have seen many places in my time,
and I am not jealous of Maya, who by what we are able to know of her is a lovely and confident young lady.
No, I am not jealous of any of those.
What I am jealous of however is Aladino's hair. Yes, that's right, his hair.
See, by the time I reached his age, which was the time of Woodstock and Haight & Ashbury, long hair on men
was a considered a statement, of independence, of rebellion and yes of fashion too.
But by then my hairline had already receded to the top of my head so my statements were, well, less than emphatic.
I still tried, and still do today, but it is a measly attempt at best. So, this is why I am jealous of Aladino's hair.
So, as the saying goes Aladino,
"If you got it, flaunt it!"

Thanks for this video, I quite like the look of decaying of industry. It has both an alien look as that it reminds me of that it's still transient and not ever lasting.

14:34 that quote gave me a weird association with the Jean-Michel Jarre Equinoxe album cover.
It might be a bit depressing to see al this industrial wasteland but it also tells a great story about West-Germany rising from the ashes after WW2 (Das Wirtschafts Wunder - The economic miracle from the 1950's and early 1960's brought West-Germany great wealth and prosperity. This miracle was financed by lots of American Marshall-plan money.
I am very curious to know what you guys think of the Netherlands!

The river Rhine devides the city in half. Usually when people from Cologne speak about their ugly city they mean the right side of the city.
The best part of the right side is the view on the other side. I live on the left side of course ;-)

Steinweg was the original name of German piano maker, Heinrich, who moved to the US and called himself the less-German sounding Henry Steinway, .....and the rest is history.

It looks like when you filmed this, no one was worried about Covid 19. No masks. No social distancing. Well Covid hadn't gone away, not even in Germany. I enjoyed your video and thoughts regarding industrial buildings. I'm looking forward to seeing your the Netherlands from your point of view.

When I see the old factories I always wonder what they produced, why they no longer produce, and what overtook them. Biggest question is where did all the workers go.

UI sound is often mis-pronounced by english speakers in germany and the netherlands, it isn't actually a double u-i sound, but closer to 'ow' from 'owl'

I am curious about how you're navigating through the pandemic because here in the USA we're flooded with news about how all of Europe is now the epicenter and far worse than back in March. In this video and others, I don't see any masks or concerns about having strangers on your boat? LOVED the musicians!

to have the outdoor cinema is great !
it’s ironic but Düsseldorf is much more modern than Köln really ! Ehrenfeld is near the University too . Köln has some outstanding museums. It has been a city since 2000 years since it was made into an official city of the roman empire ! so i sm sad to say you missed something not going into the roman- germanic museum right next to the Dom , there you can see a huge mosaic floor honoring Dyonisos the God of debauchery and orgies.(which is a description of Karneval !)
I am glad you went to Duisburg ( the u-i in the band us pronounced as one sound ü) It is indeed very interesting to see the carcasses of the early industrial age and there have been a few industrial ruins made into parks and recreation areas !

Cologne is a 2000 years old city founded by the Romans (Colonia). It was a beautiful ancient city before British and American bombers reduced it to rubble. This is why Cologne, rebuilt after the war with limited means, is not so attractive today.

When I used to live in Cologne many years ago (actually in the Venloer Straße), it was more or less an ugly town, at least compared to other towns in Germany. But you were not supposed to say that to the locals, back then. It appears that you missed something in Ehrenfeld: a lighthouse! de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helios_(Elektrotechnikunternehmen)#Leuchtturm
