@@nelsonx5326 Which is why the compromise mentioned in the report sounded to me like a yachting season being suggested. These orcas move around themselves so will hopefully work out over time that the authorities have opened up a quieter time in the area for nature including orcas during one part of the year, while the sailing lanes get busier in another.
This makes sense to me after visiting Devil's Tower in Wyoming where there's a climbing season for those who want to scramble all over the thing and another when the indigenous can use it for their ceremonies and such when climbing's forbidden for some months. Seems like the best deal that the orcas can really hope for in that section of the Med.

No. These boats, sailboats, are NOT taking fish. Or only rarely. And in this area NO one is dragging a fishing line.
      Fishing boats are different.
If the orcas are smart enough to bite off rudders and do other damage to the sailboats, they are smart enough to know the difference between fishing boats and sailboats.
Sailboats don't travel very fast. Running their engines (engines) may get them to 6 or 7 knots. A fast catamaran or trimaran (a cruiser, not a racer) may get to 10 - 12 knots while sailing. Fishing boats will travel 15 knots and higher.
These sailboats are being targeted by this ONE pod for some reason. But not for fishing competition.

Orcas are friendly intelligent and social.
If they are attacking boats, they are retaliating against aggression and abuse from Spanish and Moroccan sailors.
I have lived and sailed around orcas my whole life. I have pet them when they pulled up alongside a small fishing boat.
They are not aggressive, and have even been known to save people from drowning.
Only abused captive orcas have ever turned into human-killers.
Investigate the sailors and the local sailing community. They are the problem, not the orcas.

Sam Holmes on YuoTube went through their last summer on a 28 ft sailboat and he turned off all his electronics and and anything else that would make noise in the water. All the comments speculating on why this happening and celebrating the orcas's actions as justified. I think the why is irrelevant. If one is an animal lover, as I am, it's a mistake to celebrate this. It's very bad news for this pod. When dangerous animals come into conflict with humans, they lose, every time. As much as I admire Orcas, if one was attacking my boat, I would use any and all means to defend it, including lethal means. Disagree? Again, irrelevant, the point is it will happen. Matter of when, not if, so applaud the orcas all you want, it's really a harbinger of their demise.

@@DonnaBoykin Yes, you said what you said, duh. I too am an animal advocate, which is clear from my original comment. Being an animal advocate is not mutually exclusive with being willing to defend yourself from an attack by a dangerous animal. That is not a dumb thing, it's self preservation. What is dumb is not defending yourself against an attacking animal because you feel sorry for the animal or feel like it is 'justified' in some manner in attacking you because we as humans generally deserve it. All that said, you are simply wrong that Orcas status as endangered or protected is at all relevant in a self defense situation and you did not even bother to counter that with any more of an argument than "I make it my business to know these things". Not a convincing argument. You might as well just said "I drink and I know things"
