Thanks all for your comments. I am the director of this film which was shot 23 years ago. I am glad to let you know that Delphine is still alive and is now the mother of 3 calves. We are returning again in Nov, 2023 in Crozet to meet her, and see how she now teaches her young to catch elephant seals on the beach. There is now 5 time more elephant seals than when we were shooting the film, so the intentional beaching technique is a skill that many orcas practice. To answer other questions I have seen, I shot the orca sharing the minke whale without any particular protection: the orcas were even pushing the carcass towards me as if to say " you want some ? please share that meal with us !" They even brought me pectoral fins of elephant seals, and were scouting at me when I was entering the water to pick up the RHIB we used for filming. Unfortunately, there is no making of footage of this, but we will make some this year !

Orcas are so smart. Imagine the mom teaching her to stay in one place if she is lost. That means they had to teach her in a hypothetical situation kinda thing, like teaching a human child to dial 911 if someone is injured. Amazing.
When you watch this, see how the love and bond these beautiful creatures have as a family, it's even harder to see them captured. When you see how the older ones protect, love and teach the young. The way they stay with their families. Its a beautiful society, a society that humans should take note of. Thank you for a beautiful look into the amazing life of an orca.
Exactly! Especially considering how the baby’s used(?) to be taken away from the moms when held in captivity. Also, how orca or animal shows in general are still legal in many countries us absolutely beyond me
@@wiebkke Those shows, such as Seaworld, are under the disguise of "marine conservation facilities". And their performers are posing as marine biologists. People think they're doing the right thing!
@Genghis Khan What are you talking about?? I have my own relationship with God, so I’m very aware he loves me thank you! What’s that got to do with this video and thread?
"As a tiny calf she was stranded and rescued by the French scientists. Since that day the whole family has trusted divers unusually close". Intelligent animal could appreciate the act of kindness. This is amazing!❤
By far the best documentary about Orcas I've ever seen. The way the family teaches the youngsters, the way they celebrate together and hunt together. It's never easy to see a penguin or seal turn into lunch, but Orcas gotta eat too. :) This was so great I'm going to recommend this video to everyone!
It’s incredible how patient the mother is with Delphine! Every time she gets lost, the mother rushes over and is so happy to see her wayward daughter! ❤
I went to sea world when I was around 9 years old. Immediately I realized these beautiful creatures didn’t belong in captivity. I’ll never go back. Thank you for showing me this. Their beautiful.
Such an amazing documentary of this beautiful family. I can’t believe it was 23 yrs ago, WOW! Orca’s in all their wit and strength show the ability to love and invite us humans to their pod. It’s just breathtakingly beautiful to watch this, unreal footage. The respect you show this pod is clearly understood and reciprocated. What an honor it was to watch this, thank you. Can’t wait for the next documentary.
Thank you for this incredible video. Seeing Delphine and her family reminded me of Lolita and hers. Lolita is a Southern Resident captured in 1970 in Puget Sound, Washington. She has been living in the smallest orca tank in the world at the Miami Seaquarium for over 50 years. Lolita's ecotype, Southern Residents, are the most studied orca population in the world. Family members stay together their entire lives. L25 Ocean Sun, Lolita's mother, is estimated to be over 90 years old. Lolita had an older sister named Tsunami, who died in 1982. Ocean Sun has no immediate family left, but she has been taken in by another pod as their adoptive grandmother. She doesn't even know her daughter is still alive. Corky is the oldest orca in captivity. She is a Northern Resident from the A5 pod, A23 matriline. She was captured in 1969 in British Columbia. Corky's younger sister, Ripple, is now the leader of the pod. Other members include Corky's younger brother Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot.
Plans are underway as of now to rehabilitate the now retired Tokitae (Lolita was just her stage name)in her Washington home waters after 52 years of captivity. She will be placed in a sea pen like Keiko was to get back in shape and relearn to hunt until her family passes through. She's been retired from performing a full year and MSQ wants her moved because she's just a financial liability to their new owner the Dolphin Company. All that's left right now is having the governor signing off the proper permits for her move!
@@paimonspie8913 There was a press conference about Tokitae's move just yesterday. She WILL be going home, hopefully in the next 18-24 months at most, they said. Everything has to be VERY well-prepared to ensure her safety during her return to Washington's Puget Sound.
Holding these wonderful Orcas captive is EVIL. They are not PETS for humans to laugh and gawk at(unbelievable). They are sea mammals and are highly intelligent and they are not whales but the largest of the Dolphin family.
So that's all you have to say? How about its amazing how intelligent they are. Oh they are super predators Oh its amazing how predatory they are. I understand now why they are on top of the marine food chain. Or Maybe wow its amazing how important they are, we need to make sure the ocean remains clean and full of life for them to continue thriving.

read comments, the original director has a great one on there, Delphine is now 23yrs older (she's 37 now) alive and well, has 2 cubs of her own.... circle of life😊
It’s amazing how they do not lose their temper with their young, it doesn’t matter how hard their youngsters fail, I believe there is a lesson for us as humans to learn.
This is a work of art, The narration is fascinating and very informative, The footage is breathtaking and had me glued to the screen, it was amazing to see how strong of a bond the family have when playing together having fun and it was intriguing to see the understanding they share when doing the serious work of hunting. Truly beautiful.😍
I was in Wrangel Narrows in Alaska's inside passage one afternoon. I was in a 15 ft. Skiff with a 40 horse outboard motor. There was a family of four Orcas. An adult male, female with their two twin baby calves I would guess were 6 months old. I approached them within 10 ft. When I saw them surface, I could see the males eye checking me out. His dorsal fin was as tall as a man. When they exhaled, it sounded like an explosion. Up close, these magnificent creatures are huge! There was a man sitting in a tiny dingy with his hat over his eyes and his fishing pole not far from shore. The two youngsters snuck up on him and breached on each side of him and came down with a big, giant splash! The poor fellow dropped his pole and nearly fell out of his boat. Orcas can be mischievous pranksters. The two calves then rejoined their parents. This was the wildlife experience of a lifetime. I do not fear them.
It's wonderful how they communicate in their own language and love each other. P.s. thanks for the great narration, without it it's only great footage.
They certainly are stunning and amazing creations of our Lord Jesus Christ! BUT to say they are as intelligent as humans is a ridiculous stretch.God created humans in his image and not the other creatures in this earth. Also, humans have a soul that can be born again in Christ and inherit eternal life. Animals and sea life cant.
AS intelligent AS humans...? I haven't checked in a while, but I don't remember any orcas building rockets to go to the Moon, or making discoveries such as electricity and spacetime lol They are incredibly intelligent as wild animals. Actually fascinating how smart they are. Now, a statement like this would be more accurate Edit: and for the other pious user: Jesus&Company have nothing to do with any of this
It’s incredible to see the care the elder whales take with the younger ones and how even at 14 a female is considered a child. It makes me even more angry at how Seaworld and other companies have treated orcas and started breeding them so young.
It's an ugly necessary evil. It branches to all animals kept in zoos. The monkey, wolf, panda, bear, kangaroo, ostrich, dolphin, gazelle, hippo and so on. But they garner interest from the public. Ample number of people do it only to be entertained and go home, forget about it, or share their experience online. But the few people that are touched by seeing these animals, go on to help many many more. You can argue we can see them through video - but as an example and drawing on my own experience - I thought nothing of the 6 million Jews that died in WWII until I went to Berlin and saw the little golden plaques on the sidewalks. Suddenly it made it REAL. I felt the sorrow and sadness, the unwarranted persecution, and the guilt Germans feel. Yes we can watch Rhinoceroses in documentaries, but when you see one (at a zoo) they become REAL, as do the concerns and emotions that may lead one to help. It's horrible that animals are in zoos, but they are well cared for (bar some exceptions). The comparison would be to imagine your bedroom - in which you have everything you could possible want and need, but you cant leave it - people can watch you, and you have the ability to change their thoughts based on what you do. It's inhuman under such circumstances you're an object of reflection, and terrible you can never experience the wonders of the world, but you are making change - whether you want to or not.
Thank you for doing a new documentary about these beyond incredible beings. Just like humans, orcas and their species continue to evolve.....every single day. Love this and thank u
It is so great to see the closeness of this family. Sadly many times nowdays humans no longer put that much into family closeness. We can learn so much from nature. Great orca documentary.
It's absolutely AMAZING watching the elephant seals fighting while all those penguins are looking on like a crowd of people at a boxing event. "C'mon! Place your bets now!" LOL!!!!
Delphine reminds me of myself when I was a young teenager 😂😂 never listen to my family , always distracted by shiny objects (or anything besides whatever I should be doing) and wandering off to do my own thing. Then when realizing I needed them again ….crying for help!!!
I love orcas so much. They're so powerful, arguably the second most powerful animal on earth after humans, and very intelligent animals. If I ever get to pick what animal I can reincarnate as I'd probably pick the orca
lol I use to say I would want to be a great white shark but then I studied orcas & chose to be an Orca instead as long as I don't get captured and have to live at SeaWorld or anywhere other than the open Ocean
Orcas are such wonderfully beautiful and intelligent creatures! I think Disney should make an animated movie on them, as they did with Happy Feet. That would be AWESOME!!!!
Orcas are amazing.... I still can't believe people swim with these incredible creatures. I know they have never eaten anyone but the fact that if ONE get bored, they can still play with you to death...
never killed anyone in the wild , but at SeaWorld, different story, #orcasrevenge ....what was his name? tilicum or something. a renegade orca in captivity that has killed trainers...hate to say it but good for him, it's a travesty these magnificent creatures are kept in captivity.

Thanks for your kind words. Delphine and her family has been seen last week near a longliner offshore Crozet. To achieve this, for obvious financial reasons, we will also make other films on birds & mammals population dynamics, plus a series penguins, while our team will be there with top notch 4K gear.
“How he avoids mating with his mum and sister is a mystery” what a weird thing to say.....he probably has little excursions to meet up with other females every so often.
male orcas are totally mama's boys! they only mate with females that belong to the OUTSIDE of their pods, but they still need their mother's approval 🤣
🤩 I can watch Orcas videos whole day. They are truly masters of the sea. Thanks so much for the men and women who helped put this together for us to learn and enjoy. Great job guys 👏 👏 👏
I do wonder how much of the narration is true and how much is anthropomorphic conjecture. It all seems plausible, but, really, we just don't know. I am curious to hear the story of how these orcas came to trust these divers. I understand they rescued Delphine, but I would be interested in more details on that story.
a good dose of skepticism is important in interpreting any animal behaviour, but I must tell you there are many decades worth of solid ethology studies done on these animals. scientists have been following the same families/pods over generations and comparing language, social, mating, rearing and hunting behaviour of different populations in different parts of the world. this data are solid and the interpretations are reliable, IMHO. Regarding the rescue, I haven't found the original footage but you can watch a bit of it at the 13 minute mark in this documentary: ruclips.net/video/uW9mcG0rdLY/видео.html
@@hugobiwan1 I respect and appreciate your perspective, sir. To be honest, orcas are so intelligent it's difficult _not_ to equivocate their behaviors with associated human behaviors. It's just so... _recognizable._ I had seen that documentary. Fascinating to think it discussed this very orca! They are amazing creatures and we are lucky they allow us to get to know them.
@@AGDinCA Well Humans have a large Cerebral Cortex, a logical thinking part of the brain that makes us different to most other creatures. But the amount of folding/surface area of the cerebral cortex, the gyrification index, is about 2.2 in humans and about 5.7 in Orcas, the highest of any known animal. And no I didn't learn that in school, I just watched this amazing doc: the bit I am talking about starts at the 20min mark, but you will want to watch the whole thing. ruclips.net/video/GimCcrwYxdE/видео.html

The most ADORABLE ANIMAL AND THE PLANET. THE SUPER CUTE AND HIGHLY INTELLIGENT. ORCAS !!!! THEIR LANGUAGES IS SO BEAUTIFUL MAKE ME RELAX AND HAPPY ! THANK U FOR THE VIDEO
Eventually we will understand their language and perhaps use that understanding to communicate with them to some degree. Scientists are working on it now! Orca is 2nd only to the mighty hippo for me, they are related, Scientists had assumed the hippo was related to pigs...
the documentary has shown the killer whale family hunting in the pack they are the king predator in the ocean very intelligent they can communicate among themselves with unique language!
Lucky for Delphine there's no Orca doctors to medicalise and medicate her, instead she has a patient family who provide the support and love she needs, but a documentary crew that tuts away
Yeah, I was also thinking that. Humans definitely would have labeled her a problem child and diagnosed her with ADD/ADHD and used that as an excuse to chemically neuter her rather than channeling that energy into something positive.
OMG this needs to be a series. The underwater adventures of Delphine or something like that or an animated movie by dream works, Pixar or Disney! ❤❤❤❤ so beautiful and entertaining! obviously also informative and immensely interesting!

Lol

They dislike when ppl take their fish away, and rightfully so.

If only everybody could comprehend how amazing these animals are- as intelligent and loving as any human. Stunning
Yeah, they're more human than so many people today. I've always seen animals for what they are: individuals with a life story.
ruclips.net/video/R4N0_AYzvKQ/видео.html
They certainly are stunning and amazing creations of our Lord Jesus Christ! BUT to say they are as intelligent as humans is a ridiculous stretch.God created humans in his image and not the other creatures in this earth. Also, humans have a soul that can be born again in Christ and inherit eternal life. Animals and sea life cant.
AS intelligent AS humans...? I haven't checked in a while, but I don't remember any orcas building rockets to go to the Moon, or making discoveries such as electricity and spacetime lol
They are incredibly intelligent as wild animals. Actually fascinating how smart they are.
Now, a statement like this would be more accurate
Edit: and for the other pious user: Jesus&Company have nothing to do with any of this
Let us know when a human can "see" in pitch black water by using his own physical sonar.
As long as tickets get sold, the killing will continue.....

This the best orca whale killer video i ever seen in my life i'm really loving the love they show one a nother with the communication as well.
Delphine needs a leash. She’s got me freaking out and it’s not even my kid. Lol
Goddam I don’t know how it was filmed but best shit ever! felt like I was apart of the orca family hunting and gathering
