One of the best correlates with intelligence is the number of neurons in the frontal cortex, the area dealing with cognition, as this eliminates parts of the brain needed for motor function which is obviously larger in larger animals. By this measure orcas are in joint first place with humans.

I actually witnessed this happening in person on a real life trip to Antarctica 16 years ago. We all watched it from the deck or our small cruise ship. It was incredible, and disturbing to me because I knew the seal didn't stand a chance.
I saw a different video where a seal escaped from a pod of hunting orcas by desperately jumping up onto the filming humans' boat. The humans let it stay, but you could see the orcas surfacing a short distance away and just eyeing everybody on the boat as if weighing up the pros and cons of actually trying to capsize the boat. The orcas left in the end eventually, but it makes me wonder what would have happened if the orcas were hungry enough to try, or if they were smart enough to know that messing with humans would have brought down far bigger consequences than a meal was worth.
My heart really broke seeing that seals face but I can't help but admire the sheer brilliance and intelligence of that pod. Absolutely amazing creatures of God's.
Amazing hunters, my mind was completely blown when they coordinated the subsurface pressurewaves, and blowing the bubbles to disorient the seal was the cherry on top. Poor seal.
I think BBC missed a piece of that bubble blowing tactic. It was more than disorientation....it was making the seal loose buoyancy and forcing it to move!

I’m always fascinated by the highly strategic tactics by Orcas after seeing countless videos but I was still deeply saddened by that seals fate 😢I know that’s the cycle of survival and every living thing whether big or small has a predator but I still find myself rooting for the prey to make it out unscathed. I recall a doc when they attacked a baby calf traveling w/ it’s mother whale, slamming it with great force from every angle and how helpless the mother was to protect it. It was horrible to watch and even more heart breaking because she had to continue her journey alone. This was especially sad because they only give birth once every 2-3years so I can only imagine the grief 😢 Experts have noted that they DO experience grief just as we do!
My opinion of orcas changed after that grey whale episode. It was totally cruel and I’d say, fairly unsportsmanlike. Not mentioned by Mr. Attenborough in that episode, is that the orcas nip and bite their whale victims tongues (!) so they will bleed out. It’s pretty horrible.

Personally, I was chilled and awed by the bubble blowing. The seal is dead for sure but then the matriarch still doesn't want to risk her kids getting any bite injuries from the seal. very human-like in a scary way.
Orcas are so very smart. I find it fascinating that these mammals can hunt in such cooperation. Also understand that the production of a wave can not only break apart ice but also wash their pray off an ice sheet.
This is stunning and terrifying! The seal is so expressive -- so sad, like it knows the end is coming. But it also seems exhausted or drugged? And its eyes were so red. The scene where the matriarch pokes her face out of the water to actually see where the seal is, and you can see her eye looking out -- frightening! So much menace, intelligence and inevitability. And the amazing scene from the sky of the pod of orcas swimming in formation under the ice, and then cracking the ice apart! Wow!
@@toniiah This is basically what all these dumb seals do lol If the creature believes "land" to be safe from predators in the sea, then they have nothing to fear as far as it can comprehend. It doesn't start to panic until it hits the water, as is basic instinct. Animals are instinctual, and in this case the animal's instinct is mostly correct, but not for these particular orcas (as stated in video, not many orcas do this) Also, even looking at animals being eaten alive on dry land, it isn't like we see any differing expressions on their faces. They are dying painfully, yet the things just slowly die almost as if neutral.
The look the seal gave when the ice broke and how itbrested its head on the block of ice when the orcas sratred to push it to clear water just gutted me 😔 It was as if it just understood what was about to happen and resigned to its death. It's truly just devastating

See how younger orcas are looking at the seal but mother looks on the right to see how big the ice is ... then she waits on the other side of the broken ice to catch the seal ... and because this did not work out, she quickly put herself between the biting seal and the other four orcas, while the other (four) little ones are waiting patiently, behind in a deeper and safer water. That sub surf wave and bubbles by mighty orcas are ingenious. EPIC. And seal knew it too.
Wow that was impressive. That first ice chunk was massive. Like an organized military team, they moved in perfect unison to create a shockwave of water that broke the ice chunk.
The way they put the story together, the thoughtfulness of every scene and the effort put in to really understand each animal is sublime. This orca hunt is incredible. I've just watched the eagle hunt in the mountain peaks which is the next episode. Anyone else see it? The camera sweeps over the mountain range, you don't know why or what you are going to see next, until he reveals the eagles. And the penny drops... the sweeping camera is the eagle POV.

@@toniiah This is basically what all these dumb seals do lol
If the creature believes "land" to be safe from predators in the sea, then they have nothing to fear as far as it can comprehend. It doesn't start to panic until it hits the water, as is basic instinct. Animals are instinctual, and in this case the animal's instinct is mostly correct, but not for these particular orcas (as stated in video, not many orcas do this)
Also, even looking at animals being eaten alive on dry land, it isn't like we see any differing expressions on their faces. They are dying painfully, yet the things just slowly die almost as if neutral.
It's pretty much sick and isolated itself from everything knowing it has no much time left. That's nature.
