      @George Ramirez Far from the 2007 predictions of a 67% decline in global polar bear numbers, the new report reveals that numbers have risen to the highest levels in decades.
      The US Geological Survey estimated the global population of polar bears at 24,500 in 2005. In 2015, the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group estimated the population at 26,000 (range 22,000-31,000)7 but additional surveys published 2015-2017 brought the total to near 28,500. However, data published in 2018 brought that number to almost 29,5009 with a relatively wide margin of error. This is the highest global estimate since the bears were protected by international treaty in 1973. I accept your apology.

    • @petemiller2920
      @petemiller2920 3 года назад +49

      @@ReVoltaire I take it back. Maybe the bear’s larger mass does help it for a bit after it hits the water. a (deceleration) = F (drag force) / m (mass), so the bear’s larger mass means it decelerates slower (maintains its velocity better) than it would if it had a lower mass. But even though the seal has a lower mass, it has a different advantage - it may have a more streamlined body and thus a lower drag coefficient, and a smaller cross sectional area - factors which reduce its drag force and thus reduce its deceleration when it hits the water.

      I’m sure hunting when hungry also increases the polar bears’ hunting skills! Hunger pains aren’t pleasant…I believe humans are the only creatures who don’t hunt for food out of necessity. You’ll see outdoorsmen stop off for breakfast somewhere before going hunting or fishing.

    • @marshalastovall4270
      @marshalastovall4270 Год назад

      And my comment was for carnivores-because in the wild, animals that are carnivores can’t store their meats anywhere for very long without them rotting…so carnivores must only hunt when hungry.

    • @cobra7282
      @cobra7282 Год назад +1

      @@marshalastovall4270 I don’t think this is completely accurate. I mean they typically only hunt because they need food, but I don’t necessarily think they have to wait until they are hungry to do so. Some also kill/hunt due to being territorial as well. It certainly isn’t all food motivated, but yeah humans are probably the only ones that hunt for sport, but that hunting also helps to preserve areas by not allowing things like deer to overrun the area.

    It's pretty amazing how we humans are so often obsessed with fairness and justice whereas nature seemingly knows not what these concepts are. I.e. yeah it sucks that the seal got ambushed and killed but if it hadn't, the bear may have starved to death and conversely, if bear starves, the seal gets to survive. Cruelty in this world is seemingly unavoidable and life can't exist apart from it.
    Also, this video would be way less cool if the narrator didn't have a British accent ;)

    • @fredsoh4027
      @fredsoh4027 2 года назад +7

      Nature is almost perfectly balanced, wdym its not fair, slow and lazy prey get caught, whilst attentive and fast, and smart prey escape, lazy predators starve, whilst persistant and clever predators survive3, its the epitomy of fairness

    • @WarEagle0Z0
      @WarEagle0Z0 2 года назад +2

      @@fredsoh4027 Yes and maybe that applies to us humans as well because we obviously aren't separate from nature. Most of us just don't know it.

    • @justmemyselfandi7760
      @justmemyselfandi7760 2 года назад +1

      The human 'obsession' with fairness and justice is why you're watching this event on a 2D screen while casually remarking on it to other members of your species without being an unwilling participant. Homo Sapiens as a species owes its relative success solely to the intricate, complex societies we build and themes of Justice and Common good are powerful evolutionary tools that enable them.
      And yes... for me the British Accent is irrevocably linked to cool wildlife XD

    • @WarEagle0Z0
      @WarEagle0Z0 2 года назад +1

      @@justmemyselfandi7760 Very true. I hope people understand that I wasn't saying that we should be more like them and not try to be fair to each other. We are what we are and they are what they are and we are all one big incredibly complex yet at the same time incredibly simple universe.

    • @thomass.4007
      @thomass.4007 2 года назад

      Nature is quite cruel. It is our species that completely changed the game. We climbed to the top of the food chain, became Apex predators and slowly move towards showing mercy and some fairness to our prey. Efforts slowly increase regarding preservation, we even invented lab-grown meat from stem cells, that is identical to slaughtered meat. We invented vertical farming and green-architecture, and slowly move towards renewable energy. We already theoretically have the chance to ensure that no human has to starve to death and it is realistically achievable inside this life time.
      Everybody critisizes humanity, but I think instead of acting out of guild we can continue these achievements from the well-earned point of view that we humans are ridiculously overpowered and awesome, and what we can achieve is in the context of history absolute insanity.

    Everyone is praising the camera work, but they missed the most important part of how the polar bear caught and killed the seal so quickly under water. Without slow motion, it’s literally a few second before the polar bear resurfaced dragging a dead seal, those are no small animal, so how did the bear killed it so fast under water.
