Top theories:
1. The seal was already full, and was mostly just toying with the penguin.
2. The seal was less comfortable on land, and the penguin's threats to peck it got it irrationally spooked. I mean, its eyes were right there within reach.
3. The seal spared the penguin on a genuine merciful whim. It's possible! Animal brains are strange.
4. The seal was tired, and didn't want to keep chasing the penguin if the penguin was going to keep escaping it.
5. They somehow communicated at the end, and the seal decided to spare it. Honestly, its crazy how the seal got closer each time and the penguin didn’t even try to move away.

I fully expected this video to make me sad. Instead, it was inspiring at first and then really confusing.
Leopard seals are probably the most (and if not _the_ most, then certainly in the top 10!) aggro seals/pinnipeds. But even they are still seals, and share two psychological traits in common with their gentler cousins: curiosity and a love of play. All large-brained creatures love to play; it's mental exercise, and the smarter the critter, the more creative their playtime gets. Had this seal been hungry or even just feeling a little peckish, that birb would have been toast. Instead, as traumatizing for the penguin as it was, the seal decided to just play with it, and hone his/her own skills and have a bit of fun.
It's a lot like how cats will play with small animals; sometimes they'll kill them, and sometimes they won't.

My god as a bird lover and having worked in this field for the past 30yrs. With "hands on" experience dealing with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. I was REALLY routing for this little guy too escape. And thank god he did.

Technology, gone are the days where they have to have a camera crew operating a single camera trying to chase down some action. Now they just scout with aerial and underwater drones and find interesting things. Animals are always hunting so it’s not that rare to find with a lot of wild life.

They clearly had a conversation. I admire the penguin who advocated for themselves, and I respect the seal for spearing the penguin's life, especially because they only hunt for survival, not for sport.
Seals hunt for sport all the time. They commonly kill prey without eating much of it, if at all.
Even here, the seal was bored and playing, as seen when it was touching the penguin as it was chasing it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I remember reading an article saying that leopard seals will toy with penguins even when they're full. Sometimes the seal will kill the penguin even if it doesn't eat it, but I'd guess most of the time its not worth the energy to do so.
Regardless, not a fun situation for the penguin lmao
Jokes aside, the penguin instinctively knows it is staring at death in the form of the leopard seal. It is too exhausted to do anything else. The stance taken by the penguin and it's squawk in this is something that we are still trying to decipher. The response from it's predator, the leopard seal gives us a slight hint that it seems to be able to communicate with it's would-be prey. What the guttural grunt from the seal meant, it's still yet to be understood. Animal behaviour and communication is much more complex than we often think. Predator-prey interaction is an often overlooked and misunderstood aspect in the field of natural sciences. Is the seal toying with the penguin? Chasing it for fun? Why would it do so? Behavioural instincts perhaps? I have asked many of my friends, one a marine biologist and another a tiger conservationist, to review this video and yet this never ceases to fascinate them and their answer is - Well we truly can't say for sure why the interaction between the penguin and the leopard seal is as such.
Something of note: when the seal comes up to talk to the penguin. Its eye moves and seems to stare right at the camera. Is there a chance being observed by a potential predator. (Man/drone/camera.). Changed it's behavior.
I've seen footage of cats and dogs who when caught/observed by a human switch behavior patterns.

This cinematography is insane, these are goals as a filmmaker.
It's a bbc wildlife programme so you never know if it's faked. They have faked stuff in the past and been called out on it.
