Saturday afternoon on our small boat (and in the water around it) in Norwegian sea.
Unforgettable day, spending hours with this group, watching their cooperation by hunt for herrings and social behaviour after.
After feeding Killer Whales become as curios as we were. They swam close to the our boat, to Janka /snorkelling girl with orange strap on mask/. They came so close, stop and watch each other try to understand. Checking from under and above with spy hops, sending love... See how long is the Orca stopped in front of the girl. They tried to communicate watching each other eyes...

In the Orca community they call these "people watching tours." Orcas pay top sea lion blubber for them.

Great video. Orcas love humans. It’s amazing. The apex predator of the ocean and they become so gentle around humans. That diver was the safest person in the ocean. Nothing was going to get to her with that pod of orcas around.
I dont think they love humans they respect them they probably remember how deadly humans were in the whale hunting age and they probably think if they start hunting them they will attack which is true so thanks to that they can be safe of hunting kind of

Norwegians certainly do have a knack for communicating with killer whales! Now hopefully it is us Americans who will follow the Norwegians' lead (and also the Kiwis of New Zealand) into following these gentle giants of the sea.
I wish Orca's were like a sea dog that wanted and loved human attention and interaction. Because I would jump in the water to go swim over and love on and rub one
There are NO reported attacks by Orcas on humans.

Divers in wetsuits look just like seals... the main diet of Orcas. I keep hoping for the Orca to remind the stupid humans of that fact.

I had an experience 4 yrs ago in Santa Barbara while paddleboarding with friends. A female orca came up from nowhere. It kind of frightened us. We calmly sat down on our boards. She was as inquisitive about us as we were her. She went around to all of us nudging our feet which were dangling over the sides of our boards. Little did we know she had more surprises for us as she knew it was safe she let her baby come up from below her to explore us as well. Letting it know that we were safe. They stayed for 20-30 mins. And after one last side roll glance they swam off. A day I will never forget. They are one of my favorites. Offends me when ppl call them "Killer Whales" and paint them in a bad light. They are so intelligent & curious. I hope to see them again. 🐬💖

Beachhopper BGood pointI've had a pod pass by me when fishing west coast Vancouver Island. One was 10 ft from the boat and rolled up on its side looking at me with the eye the size of a tennis ball. It never came into contact with any of my gear..Having said that, had there been a salmon on the end of my line, it would have been a different story.

My grampa was a fisherman and logger (my mom was raised on a floating logging camp) I wish I had some pleasant stories about killer whales to retell, but unfortunately, not a one. My grampa had some scary encounters (as well as my mom). I wouldn't trust these critters at all! lol

it's called "eye hopping" typical Orca maneuver to get a glimpse of what's above the surface so they can proceed accordingly (hunt things above ice sheets or whatever..)

It's probably an ancient tradition of the orcas to not mess with humans. Because it really is fucking strange a top predator of the sea which could even rekt humpback whales won't even touch a powerless human at all. And they seems to be able to pass on information after all, this isn't too far fetched.

Never in human history have wild orcas attacked a person. Wish we would return the courtesy. Just watching how curious and tolerant these creatures are makes me burn with shame at how we humans have treated their kind. @@sethgold2048 Look up most carnivore animals that are the size of humans or larger, and you will find deaths - except Orcas (and most other Dolphin and whale species), which is part of the reason why they are so amazing and intelligent. Even seals have killed people in the wild. But 0 human deaths from wild Killer Whales. There have even been instances when Orcas saved drowning people.

They spy hop to identify PREY. They are trying to see if it's something to EAT. My God.
What's really cool that doesn't get caught on camera is Orcas will look you straight in the eyes when they swim by you. They are really amazed by us. They obviously don't look at us as food because if they wanted to eat that guy it would be over instantly and there would be no video.

Fabiana Yeal, I think they don't hurt us because they know we can hurt them back if we get upset with them. We have technology, though we are comparatively smarter than them and they ,have no doubt scoped a lot of that out. I do think they see us fascinating, though, as we see them.

That orca that slapped the tail was a HUGE male. You can tell the difference based on their dorsal fin. The males have a huge straight upward fin. The female has a smaller curved fin.

What's worse is how they impregnate the female Orcas through artificial insemination and forcibly separate the babies from their mothers some time after they're born and sell them to other aquatic theme parks around the globe.

Y'all realize Seaworld hasn't actually taken an orca from the wild in about 40 years. They actually rescue them from other water parks. I.e Shouka and Tilikum. They don't abuse, neglect, or starve their animals at all, and their orcas are stimulated and happy.

Apparently land-based mammals taste terrible to marine predators. Heck, even sharks don't want our asses; the minute they realize that what they bite is a human and not a seal, they are known to fuck off.

Orcas are so smart. The baby is so curious but the pod only let him get a few feet before they pulled the plug. I love how they keep their distance from us, with no attempts to touch. With every video I see labeled “swimming with killer whales “ the divers are getting closer and closer. We must remember these are wild creatures and there is a possibility of getting bit.
I know they are beautiful and irresistible but we must protect them, even from ourselves.
More like we need to be smart enough to understand that they're unpredictable and not get too close for our own protection.

@@sissyrayself7508 Nah Wild orcas have yet to have a recorded attack on humans. There has been many accounts of them saving drowning people and guiding others to safety. Since they fairly protect us you don’t gotta worry about certain sea creatures as they been established territories in which sharks and dolphins don’t go through.
Watching this makes me wonder why do we hold them captive at aquariums instead of making people go on a boat of this kind to see them in free and wonderful action.Look at the man in the water with them,killer hu!

Many many more people are able to see them up close in aquariums than in places like this. People who do have their hearts captured by the gorgeous animals, and go on to care about the wild populations because of it.

A STUPID DECISION TO SWIM WITH ORCAS

Not an expert, but my marine biology professor's words - the behavior is called "spy hopping," usually used in hunting to look for prey (like a seals or penguins on ice). But orcas are very social and curious, maybe they were just trying to figure out what that diver was doing?
I think the word is, disrespectful, pushing yourself into a pod of wild animals who are hunting for survival to be impeded by humans on a leisurely vacation. A respectful distance should be maintained. You don't have a problem with that, do you? Respect?
The pods tail slapping here is group communication dynamics. In this case the tail slapping is a friendly and playful display, essentially the group is saying “ Hey guys check out this thing! Never saw one before!”Interesting how the juvenile orca jumps right in and the mother yells at him to stop. Common behaviour exhibited in humans. Also, the sound that echoes after a tail slap can be very loud especially when the water is calm and there is nobody else in the same vicinity except for the boat that you are on. Orcas have unique dialects native to their tribe and geographic location.
This is where they should always be. Not freaking Sea World. Love them!

I like all of the spy hopping. I don't think I've seen so many Orcas spy hop all at once.
Frankly I would feel A LOT safer in the water with that many Orcas around. Could probably spear fish without having to worry about sharks for a change.

I have a theory that cetaceans have developped a "small boat= safe, big boat= threat" approach to people. I mean yeah you see them around cruises sometimes, but not nearly as often as besides small boats.

Safest time to be in the Ocean. No worries about sharks and you are with an animal that has recorded 0 human deaths (which is incredible - even seals have killed people), and has saved drowning whalers. Furthermore, these appear to be Resident Orcas, which only eats cold blooded fish (not that the Transient mammal eating Orcas poses danger to humans, they too have never killed a person)
It must be so terrifying to be around all these huge whales, and in the same time, so beautiful to be able to look them in the eyes. Everyone is free, safe and happy, this is the real way to interract with animals. To witness this, is my biggest dream

So many mentions of the word "animals" it almost makes my head-spin.......Orcas are beautiful, sophisticated, family bonding (there's no orca divorce or disliked members of families), they live in absolute harmony with their enviroment and never produce more then they use, we as humans enter any enviroment and we immediately develop and change it to suit us and produce most of the "extra" contamenants, poisons, chemicals, medicines, plastics, etc that exist here on Earth today.......Orcas are to be admired, and even inspire you to be a better "animal" yourself. We are the animals without a doubt if compared to them in anyway (but we like to think a simple opposable thumb that allows us to build as we do and create, somehow translates to us being very intelligent.......don't know about you but we don't usually let our thumbs make any decisions for us humans and the crappy stuff we do to other types of life.......Orcas are .....the animals LOL oh the irony (Like the POD calling the Killer Whale Black lol)

First of all.. I'm not am animal. Secondly.. unless you spend a lifetime following the orca around you don't know of they get a divorce or cheat on each other. Lastly if you think Orca's are so much better than mankind why don't you go join them in the deep.

There should get jealous to seeing this, how friendly they are even let a diver swim with them a whole pod and nothing happens cause they are friendly in the wild than hold in a bathtub for many years all would go mad and look how curious they are and doing some faint tricks on their own terms than forced for food. I hope none comes to capture them to bring them to Sea World, Norway would sue them for damn shit if they would remove one of them here. That happened in Blackfish docu when they came to Island to capture them but here they try, they will get their ass kicked to take one of those to Sea World!! And Sea World should dear to try or else the Vikings spirit comes out of the Norwegian peoples and it wont been fun for them to try to capture them. Cause by then there wouldn't know if there are females or males by that time as they would get beated up by the viking spirits in the Norwegians peoples.

Once again.. it was a woman who was floating out there.
I always get very quiet and in awe of their majestic body's but at the same time they are curious, friendly and play full. These are the basics of learning each other. Mhhhhhh why do we forget that often? 😕

Beautiful video! I'm curious if the orcas were feeling a bit threatened or cautious. I noticed that the male bulls prominently approached the snorkler and the boats, almost function as a guard or wall between the main pod and the observers.

I fail to see anything that might be called an "attempt at communication." At one point a person on the boat is waving a bit, but that's is. The whales are exhibiting curiosity, of course, as all higher animals do. The will occasionally rise up out of the water to get a better look at what's above the surface.
Its lovely to see humans getting along well with other animals.
Hopefully one day I can see these beautiful animals in the wild

Orcas, extremely smart, smart enough to avoid diplomatic incidents with humans, makes you wonder doesn't it.
They kill pretty much anything of a size from large fish to great whites and whales, but don't kill and/or eat humans or even try to scare us away.
They have shown amazing intelligence and apparently know humans are THE apex predator, despite our feeble appearance, and being friendly is the best option.
Their hunting tactics show a high level of thought. The more I see them, the more I'm amazed at how smart they are.

Thank Mother Nature these creatures don't harm us. There's no reason why they shouldn't. They eat everything from whales to jellyfish, but they never target us.

@@joeymaterese8095 No. They don't eat humans. Educate yourselves, people. Orcas have an ability called Echolocation and can read us and discern us as not being part of their food chain. They also can sense us being highly intelligent beings like them and are as curious of us, as we are of them. Hundreds and hundreds of years and not ONE single orca has killed or purposely harmed a human being in the wild. They are docile, beautiful, playful dolphins just trying to survive in a predominantly human earth.
They eat dolphins, which are highly intelligent, probably as intelligent as they are. They don't eat us because they are smart and aware enough to know that humans have the technology to destroy them if they want to.
Alot of people out here saying Orcas are afraid of human technology-
I'd just like to believe they understand we're intelligent like them.

What the orca find most odd is that the swimmer/diver is not making any movements. It's not trying to run away like prey would. So they are curious as to what/who this is in the water. They can hear it's heartbeat, so they know it's a living creature. It has 4 limb, like a seal, but it's not afraid. So they just watch it until they get tired or hungry then go to find their normal food.
I thought people are not suppose to be this close to whales in the water. That white man looks certainly crazy.
