As an American man, whether I sit or stand to pee just depends on how tired I am at the time 😂 I don't think we were ever told not to pee standing up as children, or at least I don't remember it. What I do remember are the little rhymes we learned in kindergarten about being clean when we pee: "If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat." Or "if you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie, wipe the seatie."

I was married to a lovely German girl from Ingolstadt for 61 years until God wanted her more than I did. I learned to sit to pee minutes after our honeymoon. Luise thought missing the toilet to mess up the floor was barbaric. I think standing to pee became fashion because most men wore suspenders in the old days, and it's a real pain to have to take your pants down if you're wearing them.

I'm from Norway and was taught to stand up, but when I started helping in cleaning the toilet at around 12-13, I started always sitting down. I have always preferred standing, but it's not worth having to clean the stains. Whenever there is a urinal in a public bathroom, I will use that instead, because it is much more comfortable, quick and easy.
It really feels like it is taboo in Norway, and when my mom yelled at me for getting stains on the floor once, she did not believe me when I told her it couldn't be me since I sit down(It was my dad's fault, but it is very rare for him to leave stains on the floor, so she thought it was me).

If you think urine stains are what's gross about a bathroom, you're kind of ignorant. What's important is bacterial growth, particularly e.coli. You need to clean your bathroom regardless of whether or not there was urine stains. If you're cleaning your bathroom less often because you pee sitting down, that's even more disgusting than having urine stains.

It's amazing how quickly cultures change. I was stationed in Germany for three years and found that German men peed standing up like Americans. What I found strange was they peed where ever. In public against a building or handy wall. When I say in public I mean in front of everyone. No they were not drunk or on drugs, it's just what they did. The women passing by didn't bat an eye. @@papplebeast5039 Well, speaking as a female, I've often thought how lucky men have it to have the convenience of turning their backs and standing to pee if the need arose with not even a shrub to hide behind. For women, it is much more inconvenient when a restroom is not available. (This is, I'm pretty sure, one of the worst aspects of camping for women.) And as I get older, and have to be on my feet at work more than feels good many days, I begin to think of a sit-down pee break as a little luxury that most men miss out on. Just looking at it from a practical standpoint. To each his own.

I know that I am the exception among men in my societal experience. On the other hand when I was in Germany a couple of years ago I was impressed beyond words by the urinals. I have never seen this design before and it is brilliant! The way the contours of the urinal are designed there is no back-splash! Nice

I'm German and I sit down to pee when I'm at home or at home of someone else (like friends home, etc.). I do pee standing and use the urinal at work and basically at all public places and I also pee standing out in the wild, far away from humanity, using a three (or something else).
I did refuse to sit down while peeing for quite some time when I was younger, up to my late teenage years. I was always careful, but realized that I underestimated the micro spay effect of peeing. At some point I could smell it and a little bit later I had to replace a heater, that was close to the toilet, because it became rusty and all of the protective paint was ruined. I decided to give it a try, hated it at first, but now I do like it a lot.

It is even worse for cultures where man are circumcised, because it is harder for them to control their piss jet. It is disgusting to clean up piss stain and it is so easily preventable. Also what you do is simply take two sheets of toilet paper and hold it at your pee hole while standing up so the last few drops go in the paper, it is not a big deal and easy to do. And whoever is cleaning your toilet will thank you for it! It is just rude, disgusting and such an old school thing to not sit down while peeing! I grew up in America and anytime my father peed he did it standing up and that is the way I learned. I do agree with you that standing up to pee can mean missing the toilet and peeing on the floor or on the rim of the toilet. It actually makes better sense to sit down to pee and avoid the mess of potentially missing the mark. Yes, having to sit down involves more steps and time. But it does present a cleaner outcome in the end. I would also add that sitting down shows respect to others and does not force others to deal with or clean up any mess you might make by standing up.

With that said, I do both depending on how much time I have and my mood. If I am in a rush it is always standing up. If I am worried about germs, I stand up. If I am feeling lazy or just want a relaxing bathroom session, I sit. Being introverted, sometimes I feel the bathroom is a place you can go to have a moment to yourself and regroup, so I always do that sitting down. I have told other men I sit down to pee and I do get weird looks sometimes. So it is interesting that Germans prefer sitting down!

Standing up is way quicker and easier. Also sitting down can be just as messy, I've cleaned a lot of toilets and the underside of the seat can get covered with back splash from high pressure peeing male or female sitting down. So really, how you pee is nobody else's business, but either way the polite thing to do is clean up afterwards.
But, but , but, if I saw a sticker demanding that I pee sitting down, my inner contrarian would be damn sure to pee standing up.

After the reunification of Germany, I noticed only through contact with the West, that this was probably not common over there. Or the West Germans have complained louder... I don't know.
Otherwise, I know it only from the so-called 'village idiots' who peed standing up. But they also bragged about having fallen into a ditch while drunk or about having been left behind at school. So no real standard of comparison.

As an American who lived in Germany for two years, there are a few more differences on this topic than you mentioned in the video, but then I wouldn't have expected you to be aware of them. I'm not going to mention all of them because I do not know how I would explain one without being inappropriate, but just a couple come immediately to mind:
    .
Urinals? What urinals. Every men's facility I saw had a designated wall with a trough and a drain in the floor. Some of the nicer ones had water that would flow down the wall like a sanitary water feature, usually at widely spaced intervals.
    .
Cleaning ladies would wander in and out performing their chores. I heard one or two men grumble about it once, but in most cases no one, including me, cared about it.
    .
Sit down at home, absolutely. Urine splashes on everything, including the clothes and shoes you are wearing. The acidity of urine is high enough that it will blister paint and stain wood. In time, even the microscopic droplets that mist the air will damage walls and floors, and not great for your shoes. You might be nose-blind to the smell, but your visitors aren't.
    .
In a public restroom the facilities are there, so sure, use them. Some men are shy enough that they won't use the urinals and would rather use the toilet stalls, but then leave the seat down and go standing up. Hey, this isn't a cesspool, sit down, raise the seat, or use the urinal. If you are squeamish and don't want to touch the seat to raise it, then think about the next person who has to clean it off, or have to bypass that unit altogether.

One of my favorite German words! Sitzpinkeler! I never thought you’d do a video about it though...I think the preference pertains to if it is your own home toilet. No one has a urinal at home in US or DE. When the toilet is shared between the two genders, women seem to prefer/demand that the toilet seat is left down. Apparently I’ve been told they some times “forget” to check that it’s down, which is silly and perhaps one deserves to see the consequence which will help ensure she always checks. Most Women I know wipe after peeing, men don’t, we “shake the snake” (wie sagt mann das auf Deutsch). This results in more random drops in spots other than the toilet bowel. For that reason at home ich bin Sitzpinkeler. Guys can shake the snake harder when sitting and not have pee droplets go everywhere.

Get a foot stool or squatty potty for ideal cancer preventing bowel emptying and keep sitting when it's hygienic enough to empty your bladder completely and avoid alleged health problems that occur frim incomplete bladder emptying.
Or eat as alkaline as possible and stay hydrated which is always a good idea, anyway!
      P. S. I never sit down in public toilets and avoid them whenever possible! But more because of the toxic chenicals/perdumed cleaning products used than the stench.

Bless you! My mother was blind and she would talk about these kinds of things all of the time in the context of accessibility. Like having Braille in places where no one would ever think to feel for the information! Or how sidewalk ramped curbs are wonderful for the wheelchair bound, but a nightmare for a blind cane user! Of course things are much better than they used to be! At least people think about accessibility and want to provide it, but there is so much more that could be done!

As an American stand-pee-er let me add: I always lift the seat, so the seat does not get splattered. I always aim the stream at an angle near the edge of the bowl, which minimizes splashing. And I lean forward as the arcing stream slows to a trickling dribble, to make sure it all falls into the bowl. And if I make a mess of the rim of the bowl, I will wipe it off with toilet paper. Am I allowed to pee standing?

As a guy in the US, it's perfectly accepted and almost expected that guys will stand up to pee. More what we run into here is putting the lid up when we do so and back down when we're done. Also, good aim is advocated and cleaning up if the aim isn't so good. While I agree, most guys seem to not pee standing up cleanly and it does make sense what you're saying, it's almost just as strange for a guy to admit to prefer sitting to pee.
THAT SAID -- and this is kind of funny to admit -- I have enjoyed many a sit-down pee at home. Not because I've lost my manhood or because my wife is on me about it BUT because of three reasons. 1). Morning pees for most guys go better when sitting, if you don't understand why, ask one of your guy friends, they'll explain. 2). I have realized that stand-up pees can indeed be "spashy" and I don't like the smell of dried urine more than anyone else. 3). It's kind of nice. LOL. Probably most guys wouldn't admit this but peeing standing up involves a lot of concentration. Sometimes sitting down and letting it flow in complete relaxation isn't so bad, plus, when you well, um, shake the excess out, it's more contained. There you go!

Look it up with google. It makes way more since than our elaborate plumbing systems that waste huge amounts of water. This is fascinating.
As for me, I'm accused of being weird by both men and women. There is a reason.
Firstly, I do usually pee standing up. But none would know this, and thus it isn't what makes me weird.
What makes me weird is that I keep the toilet seat and lid closed at all times other than during active use. I lift the lid and seat to pee, then I close both, and then flush. The tell-tale sign someone other than me has been in my apartment is when the lid is up (a woman was here) or when both the lid and seat are up (a man was here). Seems everyone finds it odd that I do this. I know women tend to make a fuss about men leaving the seat up, but neither men nor women seem to have any thoughts on the lid. I know it's unusual only because it has come up multiple times over the course of my life. I think it's best to close the lid before flushing as that activity might lead to splashing or something, and keeping it closed adds an element of aesthetic niceness to the restroom. It has come up that if I had pets, this behavior would "make sense" but given I do not, it leaves only the "you're weird" option.
