I'm planning on making my own tree and hadn't thought about angling it. I do plan to put some reflective tape on the center part to help with bore sights in sunlight. I was at the range the other day and couldn't sight in my red dot or scope with my bore sight because of too much sunlight.
Would that angled iron withstand 9mm, 5.56, or even up to 308? I know the 3/8" targets will but I'm wondering if I hit the angled steel how much damage it would be able to withstand and what my limits would be with shooting different calipers at the targets

Good question. Building one now with 3/8 ar5000 paddles. If the 22 does not flip them I might try lesser of an angle. Maybe that will make it easier to flip.
+TheGoatMumbler - Very nice job. I like how you admit your mistakes and edit the video. I've been wanting to build a dueling tree a long time. How has it worked for you now that hopefully you used it? Looks like it moves smooth! I shoot 9mm, .40 S&W and .45ACP.

Was wondering if instead of angling the whole vertical part of the tree, would just welding the round tubing the plates sit in at the 18 degrees relative to the straight up and down tall part work??if they were spaced out off the back a little? Just a thought trying to make it easier on my self if I do one.let me know what you think now that you have the experience. Thanks again 👍🏿👍🏿
Just curious if you were happy with this set up after using it a while? Just ordered some plates and gotta make a base, is there anything you would change about it now? Did those plates hold up well? I ordered mine from the same place
All for nothing metal targets shld be done in v50 for strength otherwise it'll look like Swiss cheese not with a 22 of course but heavier rounds will eat it up. I run a plasma table n occasionally make these for our local state troopers for practice. Ur wise to pay few bucks more but in the long run it'll save u cash . Specifically if u dont have a plasma table n rely on someone to make ur targets per shape
How wide is the 4" C channel and how long is the tree holder thats cut on an angle ( the piece that sticks up in the middle of the C channel) ? I really like your design !! Great Job ! JR
Great job! Wondering how you came to your final bottom mount height measurement? I'm building mine and unsure how high to make my 1/4" 2x2 to hold the 1/4" 1.5x1.5 angle (yes, my material size is a bit different than yours). Would love to see how it worked out at the range for you!
built mine very similar to yours and multiple plates shake and spin when one gets hit. Sometimes they also stall up in the back without returning to either side. Any tips to remedy this or have you run into any similar problems?

Nah. We tried changing the angle on the plates, etc with no luck. But the manufacturer of the larger AR500 plates has some thinner, lighter ones that will work in my tree and will flip w/22LR.
@Matthew Gillis Yep, this AR 500 Fad is crazy, you can shoot regular A36 plate with no dents at all from most guns. I'm working on some builds with my Plasma table. So far 1/4" isn't damaged at all from 22 rifle or 9mm pistols. I will be testing all the way up to 7mm STW with different thickness of A36 that I have from 3/16" - 3/4"
@@larryrobinson7492 been shooting 3/8 mild steel for the better part of 15 years on my own range and there isn’t a handgun cartridge that will dent them, let alone chip or spall them. With 22lr you can use regular 3/16” mild steel. You only need AR400/500/600 when dealing with high velocity rifle rounds above 3200 fps and even 55gr m193 at 50 yards or less will chip ar500 steel. I don’t get the ar500 fad either. Good money maker I guess. I would have about 8k in targets if they were all AR steel. Another thing the internet fad has done is saying targets need to be angled down to prevent ricochet. Any target that’s able to swing or pivot doesn’t need to be angled down. Only fixed targets need to be angled down.

I would figure that the angle keeps it from being pushed back from bullets impacting it and to keep lead splatter from coming straight back.

Love this set up! What size pipe did u uses behind the angle iron? What’s the Inside diameter? How long did are they each ?
Does this have to be 18 degrees or would 15 work? I know 15 is the standard for competition targets just wondered why the angle is steeper on this.
Could I get the dimensions for the 6" paddles? I'm looking to have a local shop cut some for me, but can't find them online.
You have to make sure your local shop has AR500 steel. If it’s not it could get dangerous.

@@joatmon1857 A36 is fine for all pistol calibers especially 3/8". Ar500 is overkill for anything under .223.
