This guy was 100% spot on right! My iphone xr would not turn on and always gave the 4013 error. STEP 1 disconnect battery, STEP 2 unscrew and remove proximity sensor, STEP 3 reconnect battery. I now can’t use “hey seri” and my phone calls are now on speaker... but at least the phone works.
Thank you a million times for posting this video. I had a same issue with my iPhone 12 mini and nothing worked out before I found your video.i followed the exact steps and guess my phone is perfectly working fine now.
I just fixed my son’s XS. Took out the earpiece cable, unfolded it, and cleaned off corrosion using a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Put it back together and everything works - including Face ID and True Tone. Had to get an opening kit for $20 and adhesive (waterproofing) for $7 from Amazon. Seems like corrosion through the earpiece is a common issue with the XS. Don’t know if I trust my waterproofing abilities, but I followed the ifixit guide for that.
WOW! my iphone xs had this problem and was stuck in a bootloop/recovery mode and after removing the part connecting the upper speaker ITS WORKING AGAIN! super happy. The face id is off now but i now have all my data back and saved myself lots of money. THX.
Excellent Suggestion! Happy to know that the phone can boot up with this cable unplugged. Goes a long way in diagnosing the boot loops and ruling out logic board damage. You saved a customers valuable data!

Hi Andy. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. My iPhone randomly decided to act funny and slow so I restarted it. I was in the shower beforehand. I did not think it was exposed to any water but I guess I could be wrong. It was stuck in boot mode where the apple logo flashes. Now, It will not leave recovery mode. I tried to update or restore but I keep getting the error code 4013. I am going to buy a phone opener kit and rubbing alcohol. I am going to disconnect the sensor as you mentioned. I am going to clean whatever corrosion has occurred and reconnect the part. We will see where this goes. I do not want to waste time or money on the apple store who will tell me the phone is a wash.
Just wanted to thank you for your video. My phone got stuck on the on/off loop while on pto. Tried to hard reset but then it got stuck on screen asking to plug phone to computer. Tried to reset on Mac but no go. Took to and was told it was a hardware issue so I needed to replace phone. I ended up replacing a screen for 50 because I broke the old one trying to open phone. Phone is working again except Face ID which is no big issue for me. Saved me from buying a new iPhone.

Thanks for the tip about the 4013 error that’s good to know. Unfortunately, the Face ID assembly including proximity sensor, dot projector (that maps your face) as well as the ear speaker is (for security) paired to the logic board of each phone. I think only Apple (or someone able to swap some of the chips from one assembly to another) could put a new FaceID assembly on a phone. If you ever change a screen on an iPhone X or higher, it’s always important to take the FaceID from the old screen and put it on your new one. Perhaps damaged ear speakers is why nobody seems to be able to use a phone correctly anymore (talking into it and listening through the loudspeaker as if they’re midway through a task on The Apprentice). Thanks

Hi Andy, I took my phone into the Apple store today, I think mine has the same problem as yours. They told me they’d not repair it because it’s likely a motherboard issue and the only option is to replace the phone. I’m tempted to try this as a last resort. Hi Andy, nice video and explanation. The earpiece and sensor portion are actually paired to an iPhone hardware. This is why it is told to be very careful when replacing with a new display, the removal of the old earpiece and proximity sensor assembly from original damaged display to be transferred to the new one is a very delicate process. You need to desolder the proximity-flood illuminator chip from the new part. Then transfer it to your original cable. This should solve your Face ID issue. This is kinda like the Touch ID situation.
Andy Haslam Yes, since these are small components it may be a bit difficult if you are not familiar with soldering. But here is a video I found that shows how it’s done. No. The phone with all the software and settings is still there. I just needed to remove the hardware fault and the phone worked again as before (but without Face ID). But if you disconnect the proximity sensor the speaker won't work to make phone calls. You'll need to use speakerphone or Bluetooth. Hi Andy. I have an iPhone 11 Pro with this same problem. I bring it to an repair store and they told me that the iPhone have an motherboard problem and one chip supposed has to be replaced. The iPhone still there in the repair shop, but I ask myself if I take the iPhone back and do the same what you doing here it will help me ?
that was the problem. Must of got water inside my iphone bc once I opened it up and disconnected the sensor the error disappeared and I was able to restore Iphone.
This video is true. I brought my Xs to the repair shop after this error(ubreakifix) and they did this exact same fix. Luckily Bo was charged nothing so it’s fine. Having no Face ID sucks but hey at least 90% of the stuff works
I put a new one in. This fixed the problem, but Face ID didn't work. You could just disconnect it and it would work, but you need to ensure the connector doesn't touch anything metal or you could get a short and the iPhone could break. I've only disconnected it and tried it once for a short time, so I don't know what would happen, or what functionality is missing if you permanently disconnect it.
No they won't. I found that out when I had a second iPhone go down with this same problem (which is why I will never buy an iPhone with Face ID), and then found that out when I made a phone call. Speaker phone voice calls work.
Andy you from the UK if yes could you please so on another third party app I get 2009 and iTunes I get 4013 so I don't know if you heard of error 14 got that a few times and I use the third party app to fix that the other day I was doing it again from 30% of the app I had a power cut in the house so now when I do a update I get stuck on 18% my phone want to update everytime it want to start an update of going to the apple logo it just get stuck a black screen and after 5 minutes goes back into the recovery mode
Update: My iphone X works now! (No face id). I just want to thank you Andy for sharing your experience it truly helped me. I went to my local mall and visited a phone repair shop who told me that they would mail my phone to a professional with better equipment. I told him lets open the phone anyway and run a heater gun on it for a couple of minutes and it was back up and running. (Dropped my phone in water btw) thanks again!

@@andyhaslam thank you so much
Hi Andy, if i were to remove the proximity sensor will components such as the ear speaker work fine?
No they won't. I found that out when I had a second iPhone go down with this same problem (which is why I will never buy an iPhone with Face ID), and then found that out when I made a phone call. Speaker phone voice calls work.
@@andyhaslam so what will I need to do in order for my ear speaker to work? Is there a way you’re aware of?
@@eelavanjanarthanan8117 The part I used in the video worked. I was a while ago, so I don't remember any more than was in the video.
@@andyhaslam so if I get a new proximity sensor the Face ID won’t work; but the ear speaker will?
@@eelavanjanarthanan8117 That's been my experience, but I'm no expert.
OMG Sir I pray for your happiness you save me
my phone turned off and went back to the same problem... do you keep your phone on all the time?
Same problem. so frustrating

Unplug the camera from the board and then restore. Once it’s finished turn the phone off and connect the camera.
THANK YOU ANDY YOU HELPED A LOT 😭😭
i used the software that you put in your description to get out of the recovery mode. thanks again andy you the best
What about a brand new iPhone XR with this issue
I don't know. I've only tried it with an iPhone X and 11.
Trying it right now I’ll let you guess know if it work
it worked
thanks!
I got this problem,just frustration!
So when you remove this sensor you lose face I'd, but do you also lose the ability to use the phone as a headset since the ear piece is also attached?
Well, I swapped the sensor out for another one. My ear piece works just fine.
@@andyhaslam do you have a link for where you purchased your new sensor?, and thanks for the quick response!
I got it from eBay. Not sure what provider, but it'll vary anyway as I may be in a different country to you.
Thanks for the help! Hope it works for me.

I'm so glad it helped! That's why I make these videos.
Anyone know if this happens to work for the 12 pro max?
Worked great, thanks!
What’s the anime at the beginning?
Andy here is doing God's Work ! This worked for me ! Even the people at Apple Service Center had lost hope
I hope not - I'm an atheist! 😉
You are right
Thanks Dude! I dont really trust myself and I'll probably ask someone to do it for me. Its really annoying since j couldn't edit for a couple of weeks.
It's frustrating when the thing you use day in day out suddenly stops working!
Can I fix it without opening my iphone
Not that I know of.
What do you use to open it?
If you search for battery replacement videos for your iPhone you'll see the tools that are used. You can buy them on eBay (they usually come with a replacement battery, but I'm sure you can buy them separately).
@@andyhaslam thank you
It worked thank u so much bro🙂
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I have a phone that works now, otherwise I had to trash it.
Glad it worked for you Nihro!
