*Top 15 things Americans do not want to know about Slovakia:* 1. Slovakia is a developed country in the middle of Europe 2. The main industry is car production - some luxurious cars such as Porsche are being made here 3. Slovakia is located in Central Europe, both geographically and politically. Not in Eastern Europe 4. The air is not gray in Slovakia. The air is normal 5. Guns in personal possesion are illegal, it is dificult to get papers that actually allow you to own guns 6. We dont have a dictator - we have a female democratic president, that we ourselves elected 7. None of this movie was actually shot in Slovakia. Not even a second out of it 8. Our trees are not just dead branches - they do grow normal leaves 9. We do have grass and plants growing out of the soil, unlike you can see here 10. Witners arent "depressive". Summers are nice and hot sunny, winters can be beautiful and snowy, but not in Bratislava - the capital is quite warm 11. We dont have trash laying out on the ground everywhere. We are EU member, the environmental policies are quite strict 12. Random people of his age usually dont speak such a good English. (it is a hard pill to swallow for Americans, but not everybody in the entire world automatically knows how to speak YOUR language, especially 100% fluent) 13. Slovakia has one of the lowest crime and homicide rates of all European countries 14. Slovakia is a country with the highest number of castles per capita - that is the architecture that should represent the country, and also the beautiful and romantic historical town centres. Bratislava has its own castle, an important cathedral-place of royal coronations, beautiful old town centre, beautiful riverside and modern bridges, many big malls ets. It is a normal European city. The fact you Americans have never heard of it doesnt make it automatically a shithole. 15. If you come to Slovakia with such an ignorant approach, do not blame us for treating you like trash. In case you are a normal, educated and intelligent person exploring Europe - we are glad to have you here and show you around!
16. Slovakia does have several times lower crime rate than US (in all aspects like robberies, homicide rate ect.) 17. Slovakia ranks much higher on freedom of press index than USA
1) Slovakia was in poverty in 2000s 2) Foreign car companies constitute 47% of your economy. 3) You don't have a dictator, you are the last "island of democracy" in Europe. 4) Hungarian castles is nothing to boast about. 5) Nobody wants to go to sl*vakia ever, only maybe to Bratislava for sex tourism.

There's a little truth in every stereotype. You won't find anything like that in Bratislava which is a safer and wealthier city than many comparably sized cities in the UK or France, but go out to Eastern Slovakia and bad neighbourhoods are pretty much like that. +jobejer This is what's called "exaggeration for comedic effect." It's a pretty common form of comedy in English-speaking countries. No one watching this thinks this is a documentary and believes that this is an accurate portrayal of your country.
Alot of people fail to understand that these people arent even slavs. Slav coming from the root latin word "slavelo" or meaning "slave". And slavs are not slaves. They arent robots.
The word Slavic people or Slavs comes from the Slavic word slava which means glory. Why on earth should Slavs be named after Latin? Perhaps you know the greeting Slava Rodu and now the actual Slava Ukraine.

Unfortunately, many Americans perceive European countries through this film, which distorts reality. I talked to several young Americans and some are even proud of having watched this film, because in their opinion, this is how they got to "understand" Europe...

You'd be surprised. Heck, East Berlin after the re-unification looked desolate like that. Or try Albania, etc.
*Top 15 things Americans do not want to know about Slovakia:*
1. Slovakia is a developed country in the middle of Europe
2. The main industry is car production - some luxurious cars such as Porsche are being made here
3. Slovakia is located in Central Europe, both geographically and politically. Not in Eastern Europe
4. The air is not gray in Slovakia. The air is normal
5. Guns in personal possesion are illegal, it is dificult to get papers that actually allow you to own guns
6. We dont have a dictator - we have a female democratic president, that we ourselves elected
7. None of this movie was actually shot in Slovakia. Not even a second out of it
8. Our trees are not just dead branches - they do grow normal leaves
9. We do have grass and plants growing out of the soil, unlike you can see here
10. Witners arent "depressive". Summers are nice and hot sunny, winters can be beautiful and snowy, but not in Bratislava - the capital is quite warm
11. We dont have trash laying out on the ground everywhere. We are EU member, the environmental policies are quite strict
12. Random people of his age usually dont speak such a good English. (it is a hard pill to swallow for Americans, but not everybody in the entire world automatically knows how to speak YOUR language, especially 100% fluent)
13. Slovakia has one of the lowest crime and homicide rates of all European countries
16. Slovakia does have several times lower crime rate than US (in all aspects like robberies, homicide rate ect.)
17. Slovakia ranks much higher on freedom of press index than USA
