I’m sure you guys are very nice people but the decision to make this video is rather disappointing. You obviously knew what you would encounter there and to make poverty and lack of education a tourist point is demeaning. You have also unconsciously reinforced the stereotype in many westerners heads that all of Eastern Europe looks like this and all the people from there behave like that. As a university educated Eastern European myself with a job in Finance I still get remarks and treated differently by people in the UK due to the perception of Eastern Europeans. If you want to find poverty like this, most countries have it, they just don’t advertise it so you are not aware until you visit. You can try visiting Croydon at 3 am in London and make it a survival video. Next time please keep in mind how this will affect people and the trickling down effect. If you want to show poverty how about also showing the generosity, culture, landscapes, amazing food Eastern Europe also has.
Thank you for your opinion. As Eastern Europeans, it is a bit harsh saying that people have a fully negative stereotype of us from the Eastern Block and that showing a ghetto in Eastern (or Western) Europe will have everlasting effect on the country. This is the reality in this place and hiding it and making it seem like everything is London and Paris is not realistic, moreover especially as social media depicts only positive experiences. Sorry this all upset you but we really did not know where we drove into. Otherwise we truly would not have :). As always, we show the negative and positive sides of travel (and Eastern Europe). Check out the other videos of places we visited if requesting some nature shots of this part of the world.
Lunik 9 used to be a "premium" settlement designed for police and army officers and their families in Socialist Czechoslovakia. Highly desirable address when it was newly built. Then some communist brain got a brilliant idea to also move in gypsy families. The theory was that example of the creme de la crop of socialist society living there would have positive impact on them and they will change their ways.... and also with so many policemen living there, they thought they will not be a problem. Communist megaminds forgot about one natural law though.... if you reach a critical mass of gypsies in one place, nothing can influence them. Lunik 9 became unlivable for young families very quickly and white flight started. Fast forward couple years and this is what is left. A monument to 700 years of failing to integrate them into European society.
Well, as Polish i can say eastern Europe doesnt look like its shown here xd Things shown here like architecture, run-down blocks and bad roads are rather exceptions, not standard Countries which joined EU developed very quickly and are now normal just like western ones

When I looked it up it said they're closest "relatives" are Italians, and that Romanian is a romance language (derived from latin) and having many similarities to Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, It says originally they are from India, but now I'd have to assume they aren't 100 percent Indian, are mixed with other European people's and are mostly born in Europe, so I'd say that yes they are European but have ancestors from southeast Asia and the middle east, Very interesting I was curious but it's basically exactly what I thought it was

these people got houses for free from the state. they ruined them by themselves. what they are and how they live is only their blame. try to live in Slovakia and then make movies about poor people.
Lunik 9 is the perfect example of people from India (gypsies from Indian state of Punjab) bringing their way of life to Europe. They are not a representation of Eastern Europe. We were stupid to let them destroy these areas. People in Eastern Europe welcomed them and this is what they do pretty much the same is happing in Western countries such as France where they have people destroying their cities and towns. Interesting fact, recent census (2021) shows that the number of Gypsies in Slovakia is down a lot but not because they left, it is because thousands of Gypsies don't consider themself Gypsies anymore, they don't want to be part of what you've seen in places such as Lunik 9 and that's a good thing. It looks like they are finally waking up and actually trying to become part of our society. Their culture and language is protected in Slovakia under the law for minority groups which gives them freedom to celebrate their culture, music and language but at the same time, they are choosing to live a European way of life. Many Gypsies in Slovakia actually live in regular houses and flats, work regular jobs just like other Slovaks and these ''slums'' are more and more rare which is great. Slovaks are very supportive of those who try to integrate into our society but you can't help those who aren't willing to do so and prefer to stay in these isolated areas where laws don't apply. Slovakia and Czechia are safer than the UK, France, Italy and so on but people will always look down on us because we are ''Eastern Europe''
Thank you for this informative comment. As we are from the so-called Eastern Europe part of Europe as well, this is the image what remains but true, there is a lot of integration.

Kosice in slovakia is my hometown. Lunik 9 was like this since ever. Gypsies got brand new apartments there and they managed to turn them into ghetto within couple years.
It's mainly fault of post 1989 governments that they have put them into one place, the same problem as here in Czechia in some places. I don't want to say that commies were better, but they were able to do some things better, like mix roma people between other people, not concentrate them in one place.
All EU nations have a sign right at the border that states the speed limit for 1.Towns 2.Road outside towns 3.Autobahn. Any additional signs are for speficic corners or such. And seriously its like that even in Auatria and Italy
Ok, maybe you're quite nice guys, but you talk about Eastern Europe a bit like rich people who went to the wild regions of the continent and out of the perfection of superiority, like in a National Geographic nature film, you contemplate local customs. That's a bit rude and disrespectfull, don't you think?

Excellent job on the video. In April 2024 we will cruise the Eastern Danube from Vienna to the Black Sea, then a few days in Transylvania. This part of the world interests me.
To me it didn't look like that people had bad intentions whatsoever. It looked more like they wanted to greet you. Also, the Roma are a quite closed community, if a stranger is driving right in that, that attracts attention.
They want to greet you because you look like you have money and they are willing to jack your sh** whatever they can. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Yeah…when I was a kid back in my home country Ethiopia when we saw tourists we used to run after them calling them hey you…you because it was a new experience for us as kids!!!
Don't be naive. There is a very high chance that even if at first Gypsies are friendly to you, they might have ulterior motives and you might get hurt and/or robbed if you stop with your car on their turf where they outnumber you.
I truly believe that Eastern Europe will always be behind Western Europe. Mainly due to the vast majority of Eastern cities not being positioned as major ports. Ports create jobs, stimulate exports and improve local economies.

Absurd EASTERN EUROPE Travel Reality, this title is offensive to Slovak people
Lunik 9 used to be a "premium" settlement designed for police and army officers and their families in Socialist Czechoslovakia.
Thank you for writing this here! Very informative and interesting. But also sad

Things shown here like architecture, run-down blocks and bad roads are rather exceptions, not standard
Countries which joined EU developed very quickly and are now normal just like western ones
Well not exactly, there are many parts in Poland which aren’t as rich as the western parts, holes in roads, dirty apartment blocks, also, Poland only joined EU to get money, they don’t follow any of the rules

When I looked it up it said they're closest "relatives" are Italians, and that Romanian is a romance language (derived from latin) and having many similarities to Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, It says originally they are from India, but now I'd have to assume they aren't 100 percent Indian, are mixed with other European people's and are mostly born in Europe, so I'd say that yes they are European but have ancestors from southeast Asia and the middle east,

these people got houses for free from the state. they ruined them by themselves. what they are and how they live is only their blame. try to live in Slovakia and then make movies about poor people.

This sounds like an unsolvable problem altogether.
It's mainly fault of post 1989 governments that they have put them into one place, the same problem as here in Czechia in some places. I don't want to say that commies were better, but they were able to do some things better, like mix roma people between other people, not concentrate them in one place.
They just need help to change the negatives of their culture & better job opportunities. They’re clearly welcoming but lonely.
Yeah, he keeps claiming they’re also Eastern European but I doubt they’ve lived there for barely a fraction of their life. Just a couple of snobs who are trying to shock the audience by going to the worst places and claiming this is Eastern Europe. And as you said disregarding the culture like we are some savages to them. You could get robbed/mistreated in Paris or London just as easily as over here.
