I'm unsure, but I think the original game on PS2 had random encounters, they did away with them in this version though...
Yeah. You know? That thing that's been a standard in JRPGs ever since the early 2000s? lol What's the next groundbreaking feature? Actually-minimal grinding? :P
Michirin9801 you're right only world map encounters where monsters you could catch, which makes me wonder how catchable monsters are going to appear in this one..

I just hope it is an option you can turn on and off, though. I like random encounters and it makes the game too easy when you can pick every fight.

figured tension 100 gigaslash, with oomph would make for some giggles.
This was single handedly the best game I have ever played.
Amazing story, amazing characters, weapons. post game, trials, side activies, infamous monsters, monster arena, epic bosses, beautiful graphics, a gorgeous sound track, alchemy pot recipes.. eheh.. the poof poof.

I loved watching my brother play this on his PS2. Can't wait to get it on 3DS! Also, I'm _so_ glad they kept the voice acting! :D
I guess they kinda had to, since the Japanese version got voice acting _for_ the 3DS remake
True, but the voice acting in the PS2 version was exclusive to the Western versions of the game. I really enjoyed it, because it conveyed an almost "Monty Python"-esque atmosphere to the game that made it a bit more fun compared to the Final Fantasy games. I was worried that they'd remove some of it for the 3DS version, because I heard that the 3DS version of "Tales of the Abyss" didn't have as many voiced scenes in it compared to the original PS2 version.
GoldenTalesGeek The 3DS version of Tales of the Abyss had as many voiced scenes as the original English PS2 release. What you're probably referring to is the skits, which weren't voiced in the original English release.
Ah, okay. I was kinda wondering if I was off-base or not. Glad to know that, as I never played the PS2 version of "Abyss". One of my friends got me the 3DS version not long after I got a 3DS because he knew I was a big Tales fan.

Yes! The voice acting is retained in the 3DS version! I was afraid that would be removed for the 3DS version.
My favorite Dragon Quest title in the series. Love the art style and the orchestrated music. If you haven't played it on the PS2 yet, you should really consider getting this game.

Not necessarily; Nostalgia is a helluva drug. And sadly, I noticed the music in this new one is more modern. The original English version was actually Symphonic; nothing beats the impact of real classical instruments.

Same here, got it on Sunday and I'm only 7 hours in. I've got 2 and 1/2 months to play the other 93 hours.
You won't be dissapointed, such a great game and I'm still finishing the extra things.
best remake I've ever seen. everything was perfectly replicated and what was changed meshes the systems so well together that it's a perfect game.

Try dark souls it has a steap learning curve but it's good
Glad this game is coming to a system that I actually own, I've been wanting to play it since I found out about the series!
I just wish Nintendo would release something that allowed me to capture footage off a 3ds without an expensive capture card would love to do a review on it. The game on the orginal PS2 took me 90 hours to beat so I am a little hesitant to get into a hand held version of it.

Xenoblade Chronicles is my favorite game of all time. And I can't wait to jump into Dragon Quest 8. I love the voice acting for both games.

Mark Plott I have all my four characters at level 50 (Minstrel, Warrior, Mage, Martial Artist), tons of healing stuff and still fail, how did you beat it?
I just beat the super boss in this game, 80 hours and I already want to play again with different skill sets! This is definitely one of the greatest games of all time!
I'm disappointed that it's not the orchestrated soundtrack
Though it's not orchestrated, the game's music does sound more akin to the orchestrated soundtrack than it does the original Japanese tracks on the PS2 version. Look up the Japanese version of the battle theme for the PS2 version, then look up gameplay for the 3DS one. Should be able to find a video that showcases the first battle pretty easily. You'll hear it definitely sounds more like the battle theme from the orchestral soundtrack than the original.
I guess fully orchestrated music would have been too much for the cart to handle, with all the voice acting and the game itself.
IidoTheFox I don't know about that. Bravely series handled both pretty well.
IidoTheFox The 3ds can handle orchestral soundtracks since all the bcstm music files on 3ds games are at a low frequence and their size aren't that big, any cartridge could be capable of holding them and the 3ds should be able to read/play them.
Especially since I'm sure the Japanese version has full orchestration. Just look at how they did DQ7. The Japanese version had full orchestration while the US version had MIDI. Disappointing, to say the least...
It's probably an issue with the rights to the music. But yes, disappointing. DQ8 was the first game I played to have a (mostly) orchestrated soundtrack...

Than was sooner than expected, but OMG why are there sooooooo many JRPGs this year and the next. Like omg we have FF15 coming out, dq83ds, Persona 5, The new pokemon games, and god knows what else is coming on 3ds...... well we have been asking for this amount of quality jrpgs for a while.

My god, this was one of my childhood games on the ps2. And it's on the 3DS. Well considering the Switch, pokemon sun and moon, legend of zelda, and mario maker 3ds are all coming out, Nintendo might as well just take my wallet at this point.

Now all we need is the remake of Dragon Quest I - II - III, we never got the Super NES Remakes, that was only Japan and Nintendo did DQ 1 - 3 for the Wii in Japan as well, I would like to see DQ 1 - 3 on a 3DS Multicart. come on Nintendo , make it happen.

It's a sad realization, I hear many good things about Dragon Quest. I doubt I'll get to it especially with my finances, but I salute you from afar Dragon Quest.
Deity Zeash yeah, that sucks. I am getting to the point where I need to leave a few good games behind myself. Maybe final fantasy 15 will be a backlog game for me at this point. But I love dragon quest, and it really needs the support. so that is always one of my first priorities.

So happy they got the same voice actors for this release. Whether they just used the old voice lines from the PS2 game or if they re-recorded them. I can tell Jessica's voice has changed a bit but it still sounds good. Can't wait for this game!!!

There's a combat command that literally lets characters go super saiyan, so any similarities to DBZ are 100% intentional.
