- For Broadway veteran Lillias White, it all began as a child in Brooklyn, N.Y., when relatives encouraged her to dance and sing on her grandmother's dining room table. The 71-year-old actress, who won a Tony Award for "The Life," is now starring in the Broadway musical "Hadestown." She talks with correspondent Mo Rocca about her role models growing up; her relationship with the audience; and setting the standard for singing standards.

What an incredible voice! She absolutely doesn't look 71.
Can we just stop using the terminology “she doesn’t look..” ? Saying women don’t look their age or look good for their age is so yesterday. 🙄
I was shocked when they said. 71. I've only seen her on different RUclips videos so in my mind she's frozen in time.
@@recherche4528 Oh please, grow up, and go woke someplace else. Speak for yourself, none of this "we..." business. Any person who looks so terrific at that age absolutely deserves having that said about them. Looking fabulous is never "... yesterday." We have to wonder how YOU look, since it bothers you so much.
@@jeffreysalley Yes, absolutely!
I remember seeing Lillias White when I was 3 years old in 1993 on Sesame Street at my grandmother’s house!!! I owe my life as a musician to her because something about the quality of her singing made me devote my life to music at age 3!!! I got my start because of you Lillias, I hope to meet you and thank you one day!!!
❤❤❤
Thank you, CBS Sunday, for spotlighting Broadway actors.
Lillias White is a national treasure
Lovvvvvvve that this black, legendary performer is getting her flowers. Go Lillias!!
What a welcome tribute for someone who deserves her flowers!!
Great Interview! A Great Lady! An impressive retrospective of her origins, career and outlook. Not an easy path, but she navigated successfully with a support system, determination and incredible talent.
Wow. Well said!
lillias white is a TREASURE!
She’s Great! She voiced one of the muses from The Disney animated feature Hercules and she played Lillian the teacher on Sesame Street from 1989 to 1993!
I have to be honest, I was skeptical about a female playing Hermes. Then here on RUclips I saw her first night and she embodied Ms. Hermes and rocked it! I am so happy she is in the role. She brings a new take on the role and it was needed. Would love to see her in Hadestown! Or anything for that matter. So talented!! ❤❤❤
If you haven't already, check out her "Bali Ha'i" from the Carnegie Hall concert version of "South Pacific" with Reba McEntire. Absolute perfection.
I am so grateful that you continue to shine light - Lillias White - amazing lady. very glad I found her. Her mother working for Billie? Billie has been my fave since age 15.
1:44 Don't get in the way of my joy!!
I've known Lillias for decades.
She's the REAL DEAL.
Immensely talented (#duh), gloriously in the moment, caring, kind . . . and divine.
Wow she doesn’t even look fifty , she looks beautiful and her voice sounds amazing ,many blessed years ahead of happy singing !
We saw Hadestown on Christmas Eve. Lillias White was Fantastic! So glad she was part of the cast.
Ms Lillias White, you inspire me. Wishing you joy! Your talent and hard work earns you all the accolades you're receiving.

Did she ever apologize for mistakenly yelling at a hard of hearing audience member?
Yes. For those who don't know, she thought someone was rudely using their phone during the show and detracting from other audience members' experience, as actors weren't briefed about phones being used as captioning devices for hard-of-hearing patrons. That's honestly on the production for not explaining this to casts, because most of the time it is simply just someone being rude by using their phones to text etc.
@@nicoletrudell2065 I don't think she apologized the production/PR did. Too much ego isn't good.
Actually she did not apologize at all. I’ll wait while you try to find proof heh cause it doesn’t exist. That’s why the uproar was so bad over it.
I love how y’all are choosing to be angry with her. BUT, actively STILL applauding Patti when she did it. And the person she did it to was a literal JOURNALIST/PHOTOGRAPHER!
And FYI, Lillias did give a public apology. In which, you’d know about if you did a quick Google search. Your racism is showing and it isn’t cute whatsoever. You chose to come to a video showing love to a wonderful performer. And rather than celebrate her, you spew hate. It’s uncalled for and unbecoming. Do better please.
So why hasn’t she apologized to that Deaf woman who was using the theater’s in-house device for the hearing impaired? A device THAT WAS NOT A PHONE.
Let’s get blunt about this. Lilias ain’t Patti LuPone. And she still owes that Deaf woman an apology.
How long is this show on broadway?
I found Hadestown insipid. Boring. What has Broadway devolved into?
