  • Training pointing dog to retrieve is what we are starting in episode 5 of our pointing dog training series! Initially, Maquina showed zero interest in retrieving, or even chasing something I would throw. I had to get creative, and do something I have never done with a dog. I started pitching kibble to establish the game of "go chase something and then come back". Low and behold, we had a breakthrough. Training a pointing dog to retrieve is not my ultimate goal with our little English Setter, and something that I had gone back and forth on if I even wanted her to retrieve. I have decided I do, now it is just figuring out how to unlock this retrieve. Right away it was apparent that this pointing dog has retrieve in her, we just have to bring it out.
This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pup.
Will she point? Eventually yes, I’m sure of that. Until then, we are enjoying every minute of her “being a puppy” and by that I mean an english setter puppy that makes good choices and is exposed to and held to the standard of behavior we expect. Discipline is not a negative word. Discipline earns freedom.
As always, thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy our new pointing dog training series... "Make the Machine".

I found this fascinating to watch. So thanks once again, Jeremy.
We have a litter of 7 GWPs at home just now. They are 7 weeks old and they all love getting scratched behind the head and ears. When their new families choose them, we ask them to give us their pup's name so we can call the pup that name and yes, treat them with poached chicken if they come to their name. Every pup is cuddled before going back in the pen with the command of their name first and then the word "kennel".
We let them climb on us and fuss them when they do because for us, the most important thing as a 6, 7 or 8 week old baby is to build confidence with being handled and fussed. Maybe, Maq wasn't handled as much as some other pups are during her earliest days? I don't know and I am not making comment on that. Could be a reason for shying away from the hand on the head. Really interesting to see her accept the touch on the chest and then the neck and side. She loved that.
I really love this latest series.

Thank you for your continued support Colin! She has become "warmer" more recently, which you will see in coming episodes!

I think it normal for a dog to be cautious to come you are a very tall man quite imposing to her. I had to do the kibble throwing for my pup as he just wouldn’t come to me at all and i am not tall i do food in a rough mat for him to help with hunting and to help get food inside him as he wasn’t a great feeder so nice to see i am on the right track after seeing you doing the same thing
