Teach Older Dog to Retrieve - Eliminate the Distractions!

Want to teach your older dog to retrieve? Contrary to what some believe, you certainly can bring out the retrieving instinct within a dog that's older. However, what I often see with older dogs is many bad habits such as chomping, chewing, blinking, running off with the dummy, or victory laps. This is why we always start in a closed off hallway where they only have one option: out and back. I start retrieving this way with little puppies, as well as older dogs that don't have retrieving experience. This video is from on of our DogBone Workshops, where we did a few simple retrieves with one of the attendees older dog. Work through the struggles, make it a fun game, and start shaping the behavior.
