  • Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! It's time... bird introduction for our upland bird dog. This is a critical step in training a bird dog, as the old saying goes "you need birds for a bird dog". Introducing a bird can be a slow process depending on how each dog behaves in the initial intro. We start with a dispatched bird to get them used to the sights and smells, and work our way up to live bird contacts. Let's take a look at how Hex our 15 week old german shorthaired pointer handles his first bird. #birddog #uplandhunting #germanshorthairedpointer

What do you do with a pigeon once you pull it’s flight feathers?

How GSP do in cold water waterfowl and cold snow upland? I’m in between a pudlepointer and a gsp. I want a dog that is very versatile. With uplands and waterfowl and both breed are great at both but I do hunt cold-weather a lot and was wondering how the gsp handles that. Thank you.

I asked this question of some breeders. I was told a GSP can hunt waterfowl but not in of a cold environment as a Lab. I am from Oklahoma so they would probably do ok on a lot of days. Curious if Kat and Ethan agree.

Yes definitely agree! They can definitely do it, but aren’t built to withstand the prolonged cold water retrieves. A vest definitely helps and if you get a GSP with enough drive and desire they wouldn’t quit on you but it would be tough on them. And we have to be our dogs advocates and look out for them and what’s best for them!

Kind of ironic that the country with all the guns call gun dogs 'bird dogs'.
