Ethan and Kat Pippitt are the proud owners of Standing Stone Kennels. They breed German Shorthaired pointers and train all types of dogs for the hunt and the home. Their training strategies are easy to follow and are flexible to meet the needs of individual dogs. They are avid outdoorsmen and when they aren't training dogs they spend their free time hunting all kinds of game across the United States.

We get our GSP this Saturday @ 8 weeks. Ive been waiting pretty much my whole life to get a bird dog (31 now). On top of that we move to our new place the same day big yard! I’ve been following studying this channel for a few years now. I can’t sleep with all the excitement! His name is Jax he’s going to be for; grouse and pheasant hunts!
This is an absolutely great drill! Great video SSK! I use this with 7 wk old pups when they first come home. This develops prey drive and gets the dog thinking about birds and creating positive 'images' within the dogs brain to associate with birds and hunting. ALL positive experiences. I have also used this drill in dogs that have been made bird shy. Just starting back from the 1st foundational block. I usually hold the bird still (both wings held tight so no flapping in a pup's face) and kneel down and let the pup smell the bird. Then I tease the pup and get them to try to grab the pigeon and then flip it out away from them. SSK knows what they are doing. Use this drill everyone. It will help prevent future issues.
I have a Griff pup coming in July and plan on starting this drill soon after he arrives. I have a friend that has homers and I trap wild pigeons from the local grain elevator when it's time to introduce launched birds and live gun fire. Can't stress enough that you need live bird drills if you want to get anywhere in gun dog training.
Your videos is putting me into overdrive to get my next one!
Heck yeah!!
Got a GSP 7 months ago and started training since. I was never into hunting and have never trained a dog but she is so smart and it is so rewarding training her that it makes me really happy. Even though I'm not into hunting I want her to not lose her instinct and she is getting to the pointing part on the last weeks. I'm struggling to take her off the leash because I'm afraid she runs away. I know you will probably recommend getting an ecollar but they are really expensive and I don't know how to use it. Do you have any videos teaching how to? Thank you very much, your channel is really helping me and Breda too. Thank you
We have tons of e-collar videos (www.youtube.com/@StandingStoneKennels/search?query=e-collar). You could also start working on recall with something like our check cord instead of an e-collar (www.youtube.com/@StandingStoneKennels/search?query=check%20cord%20recall). Good luck!
She is a beauty!
I got my first pointing dog last week (A Gordon setter/English setter cross. I’ve been watching ALL your videos on clicker training and bird intro. You guys are such a great resource! I absolutely love how you guys handle the dogs and work with them.
I absolutely love the video's I really like that you're now putting the dog's age on the videos. My pup is 4 months old too. Shock is our role model. too bad I'm not nearly the trainer Ethan and Kat are. But, the video's really help!!
Can this be done for pheasant hunting dogs? Use pigeons?
Got to meet Charles and your dogs the last few weeks at hunt tests in KS and MO. Loved all your dogs! Charles was alright too 😂
Haha! Glad you got to meet Charles and the dogs! He's a great guy and the dogs are pretty nice too ;)
Shock is looking good. Classy point with that paw held high. I have a 9 month old that I need to get onto birds but her age and timing is bad with it being summer and bird hatching season and low availability of birds in our area. Other bad timing is we are working through her first cycle at the moment. probably let her go through her second one before deciding to get her fixed or not. thankfully that shouldn't happen until January which will be after the majority of fall bird hunting season.
Hi, I adopted 2 GSP. One is almost 5 yo & one is 1yr 5mo.
Can dogs of this age be trained as pointers & retrievers?
Thanks
Hello, can you do this with Chukars instead? Or do you recommend pigeons
Can you talk about the vibration collar?
What kind of roads are in the dog's neck
Would a dachshund be ok for bird hunting? She seems super interested
There is a video in Japanese that has a long hair blonde dachshund flushing bird while the owner hunts with an over/under. Still haven’t found it on RUclips since I got it in an text.
There is still a rough coated type of Dachshund in Germany that is used for rabbits and upland game. I would imagine they are flushing dogs and not pointers.
They were used for hunting badgers. Dachshund means badger hound in German. So they would be digging into the badgers burrows and going in to grab the badger. I guess they could do the same with rabbits and rats and anything else that lives in burrows and tunnels
We have a GSP male that looks just alike to yours and i'm working on training him to be a dove/duck dog.
Nice! Good luck!
Thank you for the videos, they are helpful. I have a 4 month old Brittany I'm training. I hope he is ready for October as well.
He's gonna be ready for his own pronouns if you keep calling him that
Is it okay my pup has a lot of chase?? Also having trouble getting pigeons. Not doing so well caching them
You make it look so easy! Lol
Great video 👍
Absolutely love all your videos. You’ve been a huge help getting my pup and I dialed in. Super pumped for this year. What’s our next step/video?
man, if only i had pidgeons
where to get the bag filled with birds?
Question- If you don’t have access to a lot of pigeons, is tying a string on a pigeon and reusing it work? I have a 13 week old pup and trying to get some birds. I may only have access to a few at a time so trying to figure out how to get more use out of limited amount of birds.
Your dog will probably catch some. He’s going to learn that he has a chance at catching birds. Not good. I have a check cord on my 5 m/o pup and stopped him catching a weak flyer yesterday.JMO
@@peredavi that is my plan to keep a check cord on her. She’s used to having one on because everyday when I take her adventuring or swimming I put it on her so she’s used to it. I can get chucker, quail and pigeons but was hoping to keep the cost down a bit.
Get a pigeon coop and a couple racing or homing pigeons. They fly back to their coop instinctively so as long as a predator or your dog doesn't get them they're naturally reusable.
is it too late for me to start training my dog? shes just barely 2 years old now, and i really want her to be retriever and i finally got permission.
It’s never to late to start training
Never too late agreed. Some say it could take longer or be harder. But everyone is different and so is every dog
So our puppy is 4 months also. We live in the city but also have a ranch so...if we order some pigeons and let them go in the city is that bad? Lol or do this drill at the ranch and have random pigeons let loose on our ranch. No set up for pigeons.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
What is that video called because I can't find it
My dog is nine months old
Thanks for watching
I want a bag of live birds.
What's the name of this breed? Thanks.
German shorthair pointer
Electric collar use is for people that don’t know dogs and can’t train
Cell phones are for people that forgot or can’t write letters.
Sorry but if you can't train a gundog without using a vibrate/shock collar then there is something wrong. Your dog can be trained to trial level with voice, whistle and hand. Why would I shock my dog?? Ridiculous
You can do it without, collar conditioning is a method that allows us to reach higher levels of obedience which equates to safety. It is also easier on the dog to be consistent and reliable at higher levels of expectation! Thanks for watching!
No one said turn the shock up to foaming at the mouth. It just gives you 3 different types of command.
All those poor pigeons stuffed in a bag like that. Ur a jerk
