My grandfather has done this to train multiple dogs and they all preform in field just fine. He also Weill put dog back inside after doing this, makes a trail with scent/drags wing across the ground, puts said wing into a bush or tree, and then lets the dog out to sniff and find the wing
I have been training pointers for 35 years and guide at a local Hunt club and I still us the wing and rod .if you train on short grass it is a sight point but if you don't have access to live birds it is a great tool you just have to be creative ( tall grass or at night) will work the nose. The true purpose of the wing is to trigger the instinct of pointing. You can also steady a dog on point with it. You just have to know how to use the tools you have at your disposal
Great demonstration. Bird dog training is such a learning curve, i am on my first dog and started him this way and now that he is 1 year old I can definitely see how he is trying to sight point birds and bunnies more so than use his sniffer! I wish this video had come out last summer! I will be getting some live quail and pidge this summer so hopefully i can get him pointing scent. Thanks for the always awesome content, it's helped me so much throughout the training process.
I absolutely 100 % agree! Did the very thing you talk about with both my GSP and my English Pointer. Once. Then they went to working with real birds. That brought out their noises, and the wind direction , and the dew point, and temperature. But you are right on . I AGREE.
I had an issue with extra loud fireworks a couple days ago, as I mentioned to you in a private message.. I had my grandson sit back with a blank gun and used the wing on a string to get them excited. While they were distracted my grandson took a couple shots and the pups ignored the gun shots. Which for me was a relief. But both puppies got bored with the wing in about 2 minutes. I won't be doing it again but it was a good distraction for a quick check to see if the fireworks caused a terrible setback in my gun introduction. Great videos ! And thank you for the information when I contacted you!!!
Question: Why not just put some scent on the wing and it teaches the dog to use both scent and sight. Naturally they will associate both senses with pointing. Maybe I am wrong here cause I am just a beginner but that’s the first thing I thought. Also, you could start with this to show how to play the game then put the pup in some tall grass and see if he/she will just use scent to point? Let me know what you think?
Good sound advice. I have been enthusiastically watching your training videos. I love training but 12 to 13 years between puppies; it’s easy to forget even the basics. Again, great job on your videos! Doc Amtower
Hi, what action and lb line do you recommend with this drill? I personally like a medium action rod with 8 lbs test for walleye, but I've never caught a pointer before.
Trained five vizslas and a GSP over 50yrs and never had to teach any of them to point, they taught me and never told me a lie. Just basic good behaviour from the day they walked through the door. The GSP was an abused dog I took on at 10 months old and he never failed me ever.
I have a drahthaar that someone prior to me trained this way. I am the 4th owner. He is more than a hand full. But because that was his primary point training I can not take him fishing. As soon as I get out a fishing pole he goes bonkers. I love to fish and can not take my dog.
very nice video. And that pup is very stylish and will on his way to be an eye popper on point. This is just my opinion so you can take it or leave it lol. This is certainly a fun game to play with your pup and you do see what kind of style your pup has by playing it. And your correct, you don't want to over do it. And yes it does encourage sight pointing. However if you do it at night to discourage his eyesight then he learns to use his nose. And believe it or not there is a scent on that wing and on that rag or whatever you use that your puppy can smell that we cannot. Of course if the wind is to his back (at night) then he won't point it, because he can't see it. But when he moves around to look for it and then sees it move cuz he got too close then if the wind is in his favor he will smell it and associate that scent with the object thereby learning how to use his nose. He will then move around and learn to use the wind and point on scent. I've done this for many many years but again I do not overdo it. Doing it at night with very little light definitely teaches them how to use their nose It's amazing how quickly they learn that when they can't see it. The other thing is there's no way that you will ever be able to completely eliminate a dog seeing a bird in the wild on a wild bird hunt. So you want to make sure that he is well-rounded and prepared. And certainly not if you're doing put and take hunts or field trials. So your dog has to know how to handle birds visually as well as with his nose. So I cross train for it personally. I have been in those trials when my dog is on point 100 yards across the field and by the time I get there, he and that bird are looking each other in the eye having a conversation and that dog never attempted to take that bird out. If he had then I would lose points on that find. And while the dog is still steady I walk by the dog, flush the bird, shoot the bird, the dog gets the retrieve and we together get all the points for that find. So in that scenario, in my opinion for whatever it's worth, it's beneficial then to have a dog savvy with pointing by sight and by scent. I know this is a long drawn out response and I probably could have said it using less words but thank you anyway for taking the time to read my mini story 👍🏿
Great video, the way I find easiest to explain, if you want your dog to hunt by sight, get a sight hound. Why have a dog with a cracking nose to not use it? Doesn't make sense
what ever happened to thunder? what a beautiful point at that age. Would be cool to see him today(april 2021) to see how this little guy is doing. Love his color and markings. I have a 5mo old female that is same coloring but just one spot on the one side. beautiful dogs.

What if you put some Quail scent spray on the wing and hid it and used the fishing pole to make it fly around? Do you think there would be some value in that? Because then you are nose and his eyes
Use pigeons or quail head tucked and hidden. Let them use their nose. Once on point. Kick at bird... it will fly off. I let pups chase flying birds for a little bit then put them on a check cord to start whoa training.
We use a wing but in much more dense foliage, and only when the puppies are very very young. Soon as the puppies are a little younger then the one in your video, we move them onto live Birds in Brush. Everything is always training in pretty heavy brush never an open field like that. We do all our hunting in Hawaii and it's never open like that.

I’ve done this multiple times not knowing any better since this is my first gsp. She’s 19 weeks and I’ve had her on multiple birds but still no point yet. Do you think this is a problem I can undo if so how?
I catch pigeons from the underpasses at night. Got a big long pole for clearing snow and put an old fish net on it. Scout underpasses for pigeons nests and you can sneak in at night with a buddy. One guy shines a flashlight to blind the birds on the roost while the other guy tries to scoop them out. Then once you've caught a bunch just head to a field where you can hide the birds in the long grass and let your pup loose. Let em figure it out themselves and your not spending cazy amounts of money on birds.
They only point when they can't reach the object, so if it already has the cloth it won't stop to point it. Having said that, I don't see any reason to worry about a dog pointing at this age.
Hi Attiq Shaiq here from Lahore Pakistan very good training sir really shocked so active dog and how much hi old I have also gsp DOg at my home hi is 30 days old I wanna train same like that.
Serious question. There has been a string of robberies in my neighborhood this week and I get my puppy Saturday. I don't want the puppy to sleep in my room because I believe that they need to learn being alone is a part of life and I don't want to create a dog with separation anxiety. On the other hand I do not want the dog on the first floor where he can be seen by the robbers. I have a big family and every room has someone in it so I can't just put him in a different room unless it's on the first floor where he can be seen. Also the basement isn't really an option. Dad sleeps in one room down there and my brother stays up till 4 am in the other. What should I do!
Put the pup in a crate in your room. The key thing with a new pup is making them comfortable and secure in the crate. Having you in the room will help with that as well as helping you hear when it needs to go out in the night so you don't mess up your house breaking. A well crate trained dog won't have separation anxiety, so taking care of the crate training will solve your other worry.
Hi I have seen a video of usa gundog trials, and I saw that the competitor was given a gun too shoot the flushed bird, is this common practice in trials in the US, if so why don't competitor s use their own guns
Good video. It should be compulsory viewing. I agree that wing on a string is a pointless drill. ( no pun intended). Usually this involves a piece of string with a wing on one end and an idiot on the other. Encourages dogs to false point.
Disagree, the purpose of the drill is to teach the whoa command. Then when and in the field they are solid and can be controlled, no wild flushing of the bird, and their instincts takes over in the field. If you have the right dog, you won’t have to worry about the nose. All you are doing with the sight is building up the weaker instinct all while under CONTROL
It seems like people often do this drill when the pup is 8-12 weeks old. That seems early for teaching the whoa command or any commands really. What do you use for a correction on an 8 week old?
If there is a live quail on the pole and they learn to point with their nose as long as it is in cover and the pup is down wind we have found if you do it at 10 week s they are holding at 16 week s and they let you walk up no sight points period
So what’s the correct way? I’ve watched a few of your videos and you say not to do this and that to make a bad habit. But you never once gave another option. Is this in every video ?
I’ve been doing this unaware of what it would do to my dog and After watching this video realized my dog isn’t putting her nose to the ground and looking for birds and have no clue how to correct it
You have instagram? Do you know, Ozren Badza? Follow him watch some of his videos..His dogs are OP compared to yours. Don’t discourage people on training GSP’s on what they do best. Cheers.
I have a Weimaraner. How a trained her to point. Was great. Until I went fishing with her the first time. Quickly realized she associated the rod with the bird. Every bait , every cast she was going to point and then chase. Not cool

Strongly Agree! This is the first step. Next step is to go out on a field with high grass and do the same to train the nose !!!

Get out your pole and do nothing with it a couple times a day until he is totally desensitized to it.
could this be done in longer grass to block eye sight and use something with a scent to get that nose working ?
very nice video. And that pup is very stylish and will on his way to be an eye popper on point. This is just my opinion so you can take it or leave it lol.

What do you recommend using, weither it be a techniques or item, to improve the sent tracking?
What if you put some Quail scent spray on the wing and hid it and used the fishing pole to make it fly around? Do you think there would be some value in that? Because then you are nose and his eyes
This was my plan too, I'm also curious 🤔
So you did do a training episode with thunder
Thanks for this info , now I know I need to stop doing this.
I just got a new GSP puppy 8 weeks old & was waiting to get a wing to training with! Do thanks for the warning not to do that! I'll keep watching!
You can do it just do it once!
So if not this how do u start training for birds at an early age like this
Use pigeons or quail head tucked and hidden. Let them use their nose. Once on point. Kick at bird... it will fly off. I let pups chase flying birds for a little bit then put them on a check cord to start whoa training.
as you stated this is not grate for having the dog learn to use its nose to find the bird then what method do you recommend for this?
I've played this game with my pup in tall grass and even deep brush and she was working the wind to find the scent and point.
There's very little scent on a dried up wing.
@@archywisemanmaybe Dog had Good Nose !
@@wallacerose7499 Or the dog is sight pointing, which is not what you want in the field.
Wow.. He's a handsome young pup!!

We move the birds to where the dog can’t see them forcing them to look with their nose!

i used to fish with a springer spaniel molly always caught more fish than i did and i was a good fisherman

We feed twice, morning and afternoon
@@StandingStoneKennels thanks so much!
So what’s recommended for us city boys that don’t have access to acres of land and pigeons?
Birds make a bird dog, but you don't have to have acres and acres of land! Can you use a friend's yard?
The book Gun Dog: revolutionary Rapid Training Method by Richard Wolters is a very good recourse for people who don’t have access to land or birds. It’s what I primarily used to train my first GSP and will use it to help me train my next one coming in June!
Can you point me to a solid reputable breeder? Where do you buy your GSP?

I have a genuine question. What is the difference between this drill and the video you guys recently uploaded introducing the pups to birds? Both seem very sight driven and the bird introduction seems to only lead to chasing a bird. Thanks in advance.
One is encouraging retreiving the other encouraging sight pointing!
Using their sense of smell vs. visual, is my thought.
I agree. If you do this too much, they won't hold a bird, they chase

I’ve been doing this unaware of what it would do to my dog and After watching this video realized my dog isn’t putting her nose to the ground and looking for birds and have no clue how to correct it
We can use their eyes to make the transfer to the nose!
Why the pink gun
Why the heck not?!
Ай да молодец, глаз радует молец! 👍
You have instagram? Do you know, Ozren Badza? Follow him watch some of his videos..His dogs are OP compared to yours. Don’t discourage people on training GSP’s on what they do best. Cheers.
He has great looking dogs!
I have a Weimaraner. How a trained her to point. Was great. Until I went fishing with her the first time. Quickly realized she associated the rod with the bird. Every bait , every cast she was going to point and then chase. Not cool
Provided a problem with no solution…
