I actually clicked on the video because even though I am a competent, confident, highly skilled professional dog trainer, I am also forever a student and wanted to see what you have to offer. I've never seen your videos before ;-) I personally condition using the lowest perceptible setting and release the pressure as soon as they commit to the recall. But, I definitely picked up some interesting points that I might try and absolutely see the value of what you're doing. I also say this knowing absolutely nothing about the breed you're demoing this with. Good stuff. Keep up the great work my friend.
I was always so against these but after trying a collar like this it’s so amazing. Now he is to the point to where the vibrate will snap him out of just about anything and it’s like a reset button where he just looks at me for what to do next.
My dog is full on energy even after multiple walks/plays with other dogs per day. He gets reactive easily with some dogs (like bigger than him or puppies). We tried distancing approach and every kind of high quality treats (cheese, boil meat, you name it). Nothing helps. One day we check out my friend's e-collar, ofc we did introduce sessions with him. Now he can walk past dogs without getting too reactive. His level is 2 and he has thick fur 😂. People look at me like hey why are you shocking your dog. I always have to correct them that I'm gently tapping him, ask him to focus on me, not like me kicking him for his attention.
Agreed....I use a Garmin for my three Standard Poodles.....I have used the correction setting very little....they react instantly to the vibrate setting.
This is amazing especially since I have a GSP mix! She ran away yesterday, chased her through 3 neighborhoods. I think I will be getting an ecollar, she's a year old, 0 recall. Professional will be last resort since they are very expensive! Thank you for this video since I've been question whether or not to get an ecollar and it's purely for recall and her reactiveness (she gets Overexcited, has dragged, clawed, and bit me to get to other dogs)
Thanks. Very helpful. I have been wondering about using the vibrate function. I am wondering about the pros and cons of keeping the vibrate/stim on until my dog gets to me. I am hesitant to make her bare the discomfort for that long; If I train my dog, turning off the vibrate right when she turns to come to me , do you think it is possible later to train by turning off the vibrate as you did - when she gets to me?
There are two thoughts on this. We always use the lowest level of pressure for training and using continuous communication via vibrate or stim is what we have found to best explain to our dogs what our expectation is.

Years back I saw a person misusing a training collar on his dog. The person was teaching their dog the command come which all circumstances should be positively reinforced but when used with negative reinforcement what should be a joyous event becomes a huge negative event. I honestly felt like taking the training collar off his dog, put it around the owners neck turn the setting up to maximum and demand that they do "Rutabaga" and shock them when they didn't do "Rutabaga" without explaining what I meant by "Rutabaga". Many years ago when I was training our German Longhair Pointer with a number of experienced trainers, she would stop listening to me in the field and would ignore the command 'Come' a command that she knew very well. They put the training collar on her on the lowest possible setting and when she ignored me she got shocked and at which point she came running towards me; it was such an unpleasant event that she never ignored me in the field. She went on to earn one Field Title and one Field Championship, she together with our one year older Vizsla made a fantastic hunting combination if there were any upland game birds in the field that we were hunting together they would find the birds. It was then up to the hunters to do their jobs and shoot the birds once they had been flushed.

That’s not negative reinforcement. Shocking the collar is positive punishment. You need to learn the different definitions of operant conditioning if ur gonna use it😂
You did a great job showing us how to correctly use the e-collar. Unfortunately, my dog had a terrible experience. I did it as close to the way you did it and it did not go well. I used the vibration and she went crazy. I made sure to keep the vibration going until I went over to her and then I turned it off. I tried to just use the sound and she went just as crazy. Any advice?

I don't have time to find the answer to this in all your videos - I plan to go through them all but it would take days!!! I've been reluctant to start using an e-collar at all (but I need to). I've also worried that using it for recall will prevent an e-collar from being used in field training. Do you use an e-collar for field/hunting training?
I'm trying to find an e-collar that has constant vibration as it seems like that is the approach used here. Most seem to limit vibration to either short bursts or 8 seconds max (Garmin Sport Pro). What have you all been using?

In my opinion it’s because it’s a tool that CAN be harmful when used incorrectly. And typically people get these things, do no research/ignore instructions and turn it all the way up and hurt the dog, if used correctly this can be a great tool. If used incorrectly it can be horrible, traumatic, and abusive.

Hi - Your training videos are very helpful. I have a mixed breed male that is mostly husky and therefore a little stubborn and very independent. I found it very interesting that you used the vibrate as the positive reinforcement. The collar I bought has 3 notifications: beep, vibrate, and stimulate. What are your thoughts about using the beep as the positive reinforcement so that you have a two-stage correction of vibration and stimulation?
We weren't using vibrate as positive reinforcement. Vibrate or stimulation would both be negative reinforcement. Treats, retrieves and other rewards are positive reinforcement.
What is the next step after this as I find my male springer spaniel of 7 months is ignoring the vibrate now. It was great at the start but his recall isn’t great anymore.
Question, Love your videos but I have a question on this. I used this process to train my GWP for recall, I own 46 acres and wanted to let him off leash to burn off energy. His recall was strong in house and the back yard, I switched to the E-collar, and he had good recall. This worked for about 2 weeks fine. He would go running, I'
my new pup will pickup the lead. he learned from an untrained family. Today is day 7, neutered today at 7 months. been a handful, he does listen and come to an extent. but he is like any other untrained dog. They all have ADD. How do we stop the picking up the lead when he already learned the bad behaviour? Feel free to im me with a response...p.s. just got callar with sound, buzz and tenz which I dont wanna use unless necessary. He is a full blooded Dalmation, smart, high energy and focused!!
Once your dog is collar conditioned to recall and you are able to proof that collar conditioning in higher distracting environments you will be able to regain their attention with the collar and recall them from chasing!
Owned Walkers and American foxhounds my whole life, never had an issue with recall. They like to wonder a bit, but never an issue with recall. Had them distance mile out from me in the country chasing deer, they always come back asap when called. My dogs have never had an e collar. The thought of being paranoid of a shock is crazy. Same as beating them.
It sounds like your dogs naturally have amazing obedience tendencies. My dog won’t drop his view of a bird, person, or whatever he has his attention on absolutely no matter what. He’s a GSP. I could put a steak in front of his nose and he wouldn’t care. I’ve tried just about everything I could think of to get his attention on me and not on his target. Absolutely nothing works. I envy that natural tendency in your dogs, and I’m glad for you that you’ve never needed such tactics with your dogs. Other people aren’t so lucky. And like they’re training, they’re not conditioning them with fear of shocks. Vibrations and shocks are very different settings.
Would you eventually be able to wean them off the collar? I have walker/beagle mix. I was always told not to trust them off leash due to high prey drive

Great question. We don’t recommend starting before 16 weeks old and only after you’ve laid a solid foundation with positive reinforcement of the behavior you are going to collar condition.
After conditioning to the collar for high distraction situations, do you usually need the collar strapped on and/or be ready to use it forever? Or after multiple training sessions, is it the hope to be collar free to where the recall becomes automatic even without having to wear the collar at all? Just wondering if the potential of negative reinforcement always needs to be there after the training is solidified after multiple sessions.
Great question! Collar free is 100 percent an option. What breed do you have? Personality and temperament can really change the difficulty level of this!
@@StandingStoneKennels I have a pointer/lab mix. Shei s very smart, can get training however she is very excited and has a weird relationship with cats. She is not agressive at all to anything (dogs or human), but she chases cats and birds sometimes (doesn't want to attack though, just chases) What do you suggest in this case? I practice open leash sometimes at an open parking lot, she is not 100% obeying but she comes when I recall mostly. But if she sees a cat that is a different situation. What do you suggest we do? We only had her for 3 months :)
Hello am interested if purchasing ecollar IS right... I have a cockerspaniel he understands recall, comes to me when i say so, however when he is off leash in forest and IS in bigger distance and he catches certain smell of animal or something disturbs him too much, he ignores anything i say and runs after it. Last time he almost ended Up on highway if it wouldnt be for me yelling on top of my my lungs at him to come back......i tried everything so i wanna know if purchasing ecollar would be right Choice in this situation to give him that tingle in his Brain that am calling and he can realise ,, oh my owner is calling to back off and return" i just wanna reassurance of his safety and because he is hyperactive dog it is hard to lower his energy on leash thats why i prefer off leash long walks trough forest.....And when we are in public he is always on leash but whenever car passes by he wants to run after it....i tried to train him to not do that but everything in his Brain IS to chase the car and he doesnt care about any food or treats. Its again bad thing of his behaviour ....thanks for Ur reply or anybody's who IS more educated in ecollars i would really appreciate the answer if its right to purchase ecollar in this situation .
When you have trained a dog with and e-collar, do you always need to have the collar on and the remote with you every were you go and every time you want the dog to comply with a command?
Not if you condition properly. That means a lot of repetitions , a lot, so it becomes programmed. I run the collar on my dog hunting because I want to be able to correct infractions. the other thing is you need to do corrections without a collar on. That means set the dog up to fail and physically go out and make the correction. Collar is not just knowing the collar is not on, its knowing you wont show up. and correct.
Soni tried this today with my 5 mo old gsp and he kinda freaked out. Should I continue or give him a break for a few days before doing this training again?
i want my dog to come to me on the beep of collar, so every time I beep I will reward my dog with treat , will this work too??? I do not have clicker so collar beep will be positive signal
I never used any ecollar in my life and I trained my dogs normally. Currently having 4 months old Caucasian ovcharka, before had cane corso, bernese mountain dog and 2 labradors.
Appreciate this video. I've a 1yr old English Springer. Great dog. For the most part recall or direction change happens based on my call but he's gets distracted in the field (smell- excited). He is starting to get selective hearing, come but im going to ignore your sit command. I need to take things up a notch- treat based response to his response.
I think it's for us to locate where the dog is. E collars are used for hunting dogs where they will get out of sight the beep will help to know which direction they went
As soon as possible it's also important to use a word to recall or come that is only used for that purpose, I've seen so many comments and trainers talk about blowing or messing up the word then need to train for different command or some choosing a whistle
Definitely start getting them used to a collar leash and touching there feet so if nails need to be trimmed. I kick myself in butt because nail trimming is like war. Many use dremel to trim nails so if you have one or something that makes same type noise can even try getting them used to that around there feet !! Treats n more treats !!!
I have been scared to get our 5 year old GSP to have her recall. My wife and I are both disabled. We live near South Bend,In. We love GSPs, our 3rd one, but we are gun shy that she would be a runner. She is chipped and we would cry if she left us. Help!!!
I've really enjoyed the videos over the past few months but I have a question for you (or any other folks). I have the apparently unique issue that my 5 mo old Brittany doesn't respond at all to vibration. In the backyard he responds perfectly to the "here" command, "sit", and also heels well (utilizing the clicker) without the use of a check cord (in less controlled environments he needs the check chord to re-direct his attention). I've started the vibrate recall like in this video, as I would ultimately like him to recall on vibration but he seems to not feel a thing. On a check cord in the backyard with no distractions he doesn't seem to feel anything and, obviously, in the field or any other location with distractions, he's oblivious. I was hoping the vibration would be the trick to re-direct his attention back to me on recall in those distracted situations and eventually have more confidence off lead. Yes, his collar is fitted correctly and yes, it is vibrating as designed. I ended up trying a very low stimulation and he snapped right around on recall like he does in the backyard. Any suggestions to get a vibrate=recall response?
My dog does not react well the M1100 vibration, I’ve tried holding it and tugging him towards me to touch my hand and he completely shuts down and throws himself at the ground to try and get the collar off. Do you have any advice for this reaction? Should I use the continuous stim instead or is this unfixable?

Try getting him to start coming towards you with a little tug of the check cord them release the vibrate and work your way up to full vibration while he's coming back. Example: you turn on vibrate and call him give him a little tug and when he takes a few steps toward you shut it off and continue the recall. Then work your way up to him coming to you on full vibration. My oldest dog did the same thing at first. And remember turn the vibrate on a second Before you recall him.
my puppy sees a cat or bunny and is GONE. will not listen. gone and I'm chasing after yelling her name like a fool. epic frustration. so, I bought an e-collar. need this training badly!! (just started.)
I have a mountain cur he will not obey without a e collar. He's in training now. These collars will not hurt the dog if used properly. Don't give bad advice if you don't like the video don't watch.
With Labrador retrievers, I use a lip-based whistle with treats instead of the human voice ruclips.net/video/rbKUL1FQlts/видео.html With competition later, whistle is the primary method of communication at hundreds of meters away from the retriever.
I'm at wit's end. My 4 1/2 month old GSP is a hard headed little guy. If I have treats, he will do exactly what I ask. If I don't, he'll look at me me like I was an alien.
We always pick the clever puppy, when they are young you often ask yourself why did we get the clever puppy? When they are older you know exactly why you wanted the clever puppy.
i have managed to do this with my german short haired pointer lab mix without any such e collar... i think people have forgotten stern tone voices-bond with the dog- and most of all patience... collars are for the lazy and in patient. my dog will not jump on people will only go up and sniff then come right back when he's analyzed the scent and when im walking in my neighborhood or park or ranch that my parents have he will always stay within a 15-20 foot radius. my dog has had little to no training, have a very good temperament for a dog that should have alot of pent up energy. he is pushing 2 years old.
What’s great about these ecollars though is you can train a recall without saying anything. I own a Dogtra with a 600m range and when my dog is far down the field and upwind from me making it difficult to hear me all i have to do is tone and she’ll come sprinting right back to me
My Wirehaired Pointing Griffon would move to look around a steak in front of his nose if there was a bird on the other side of it. It’s not about laziness.
4:55 you eliminated the wrong device! lol The dogs whole body language changed when you used the collar. The joy disappeared. Superstitious behaviour occurred hence the looking around.
@@StandingStoneKennels I didnt watch much of this one, because i find it hard to believe an e-collar is necessary when teaching a puppy simple things. In my opinion an ecollar is only ethical for reactive dogs that had improper previous training or have a hearing or seeing disability. No hate, but if the dog is food motivated, why not just use their food drive?

how so? Clay certainly doesn't act like he's abused. He's not even getting a stimulation in this video. He is only getting a vibration and sound. It's a training tool and doesn't hurt the dog at all. Even at the highest stimulation setting an E collar doesn't hurt the dog.
I speak from a trainer who put the e collar on my 5 month old puppy doberman.. she almost died after 2 days of it . The trainer themselves said she couldn't handle it. I put it in my arm and clicked it where they had it on her and it blew My arm off it hurt so bad .
E Collars are not cruel or abusive. They are not meant to crank up and hurt your dog. They are meant to be a tap on the dogs shoulder more less. And I’ll say it like it is E Collars can be a life saver for a dog and I’m not trying to be rude but obviously you and your trainer do not know much about dog training. Because a quality E Collar can be set so low on stimulation the dog doesn’t even feel it and then you set it up to the point of where they just feel it. Again I’m not trying to be rude to you. But when people write comments like yours they don’t usually have a clue how to train actual working dogs

Hi we have a German Wire-Haired Pointer and when he is in a zone he doesn't feel the E-Collar.
Then turn the sensitivity up till you get the proper response.

And typically people get these things, do no research/ignore instructions and turn it all the way up and hurt the dog, if used correctly this can be a great tool. If used incorrectly it can be horrible, traumatic, and abusive.

Hi - Your training videos are very helpful. I have a mixed breed male that is mostly husky and therefore a little stubborn and very independent. I found it very interesting that you used the vibrate as the positive reinforcement. The collar I bought has 3 notifications: beep, vibrate, and stimulate. What are your thoughts about using the beep as the positive reinforcement so that you have a two-stage correction of vibration and stimulation?
We weren't using vibrate as positive reinforcement. Vibrate or stimulation would both be negative reinforcement. Treats, retrieves and other rewards are positive reinforcement.
What is the next step after this as I find my male springer spaniel of 7 months is ignoring the vibrate now. It was great at the start but his recall isn’t great anymore.
Is the e collar a forever thing ? I don’t really want it to be but happy to use as a training tool.

my new pup will pickup the lead. he learned from an untrained family. Today is day 7, neutered today at 7 months. been a handful, he does listen and come to an extent. but he is like any other untrained dog. They all have ADD. How do we stop the picking up the lead when he already learned the bad behaviour? Once your dog is collar conditioned to recall and you are able to proof that collar conditioning in higher distracting environments you will be able to regain their attention with the collar and recall them from chasing!
How old is your recommendation to start e-collar training ?
Owned Walkers and American foxhounds my whole life, never had an issue with recall. They like to wonder a bit, but never an issue with recall. Had them distance mile out from me in the country chasing deer, they always come back asap when called.
My dogs have never had an e collar. The thought of being paranoid of a shock is crazy. Same as beating them.

It sounds like your dogs naturally have amazing obedience tendencies. My dog won’t drop his view of a bird, person, or whatever he has his attention on absolutely no matter what. He’s a GSP. I could put a steak in front of his nose and he wouldn’t care. I’ve tried just about everything I could think of to get his attention on me and not on his target. Absolutely nothing works. I envy that natural tendency in your dogs, and I’m glad for you that you’ve never needed such tactics with your dogs. Other people aren’t so lucky. And like they’re training, they’re not conditioning them with fear of shocks. Vibrations and shocks are very different settings.
Would you eventually be able to wean them off the collar? I have walker/beagle mix. I was always told not to trust them off leash due to high prey drive

Great question. We don’t recommend starting before 16 weeks old and only after you’ve laid a solid foundation with positive reinforcement of the behavior you are going to collar condition.

Great question! Collar free is 100 percent an option. What breed do you have? Personality and temperament can really change the difficulty level of this!

She is not agressive at all to anything (dogs or human), but she chases cats and birds sometimes (doesn't want to attack though, just chases) What do you suggest in this case? Hello am interested if purchasing ecollar IS right... I have a cockerspaniel he understands recall, comes to me when i say so, however when he is off leash in forest and IS in bigger distance and he catches certain smell of animal or something disturbs him too much, he ignores anything i say and runs after it. Last time he almost ended Up on highway if it wouldnt be for me yelling on top of my my lungs at him to come back......i tried everything so i wanna know if purchasing ecollar would be right Choice in this situation to give him that tingle in his Brain that am calling and he can realise ,, oh my owner is calling to back off and return" i just wanna reassurance of his safety and because he is hyperactive dog it is hard to lower his energy on leash thats why i prefer off leash long walks trough forest.....And when we are in public he is always on leash but whenever car passes by he wants to run after it....i tried to train him to not do that but everything in his Brain IS to chase the car and he doesnt care about any food or treats. When you have trained a dog with and e-collar, do you always need to have the collar on and the remote with you every were you go and every time you want the dog to comply with a command?
Not if you condition properly. That means a lot of repetitions , a lot, so it becomes programmed. I run the collar on my dog hunting because I want to be able to correct infractions. the other thing is you need to do corrections without a collar on. That means set the dog up to fail and physically go out and make the correction. Collar is not just knowing the collar is not on, its knowing you wont show up. and correct.

Less about an an age by more about an understanding of the behavior first. To apply an age to it we usually start around 4-5 months old. :)
I never used any ecollar in my life and I trained my dogs normally. Currently having 4 months old Caucasian ovcharka, before had cane corso, bernese mountain dog and 2 labradors.

Appreciate this video. I've a 1yr old English Springer. Great dog. For the most part recall or direction change happens based on my call but he's gets distracted in the field (smell- excited). He is starting to get selective hearing, come but im going to ignore your sit command. I need to take things up a notch- treat based response to his response.

As soon as possible it's also important to use a word to recall or come that is only used for that purpose, I've seen so many comments and trainers talk about blowing or messing up the word then need to train for different command or some choosing a whistle
Definitely start getting them used to a collar leash and touching there feet so if nails need to be trimmed. I kick myself in butt because nail trimming is like war. Many use dremel to trim nails so if you have one or something that makes same type noise can even try getting them used to that around there feet !! Treats n more treats !!!

I've really enjoyed the videos over the past few months but I have a question for you (or any other folks). I have the apparently unique issue that my 5 mo old Brittany doesn't respond at all to vibration. In the backyard he responds perfectly to the "here" command, "sit", and also heels well (utilizing the clicker) without the use of a check cord (in less controlled environments he needs the check chord to re-direct his attention). I've started the vibrate recall like in this video, as I would ultimately like him to recall on vibration but he seems to not feel a thing. On a check cord in the backyard with no distractions he doesn't seem to feel anything and, obviously, in the field or any other location with distractions, he's oblivious. I was hoping the vibration would be the trick to re-direct his attention back to me on recall in those distracted situations and eventually have more confidence off lead. Yes, his collar is fitted correctly and yes, it is vibrating as designed. I ended up trying a very low stimulation and he snapped right around on recall like he does in the backyard. Any suggestions to get a vibrate=recall response?
Why is a vibrate response so important? Will the dog wear it all the time? Training to hunt?
My dog does not react well the M1100 vibration, I’ve tried holding it and tugging him towards me to touch my hand and he completely shuts down and throws himself at the ground to try and get the collar off. Do you have any advice for this reaction? Should I use the continuous stim instead or is this unfixable?

How about you put the collar on and hold the button down till the battery runs out… You know asking people how to properly torture animals is sick.
Try getting him to start coming towards you with a little tug of the check cord them release the vibrate and work your way up to full vibration while he's coming back.
Example: you turn on vibrate and call him give him a little tug and when he takes a few steps toward you shut it off and continue the recall. Then work your way up to him coming to you on full vibration. My oldest dog did the same thing at first.
And remember turn the vibrate on a second Before you recall him.

We always pick the clever puppy, when they are young you often ask yourself why did we get the clever puppy? When they are older you know exactly why you wanted the clever puppy.

i have managed to do this with my german short haired pointer lab mix without any such e collar... i think people have forgotten stern tone voices-bond with the dog- and most of all patience... collars are for the lazy and in patient. my dog will not jump on people will only go up and sniff then come right back when he's analyzed the scent and when im walking in my neighborhood or park or ranch that my parents have he will always stay within a 15-20 foot radius. my dog has had little to no training, have a very good temperament for a dog that should have alot of pent up energy. he is pushing 2 years old.
What’s great about these ecollars though is you can train a recall without saying anything. I own a Dogtra with a 600m range and when my dog is far down the field and upwind from me making it difficult to hear me all i have to do is tone and she’ll come sprinting right back to me

@@StandingStoneKennels I didnt watch much of this one, because i find it hard to believe an e-collar is necessary when teaching a puppy simple things. In my opinion an ecollar is only ethical for reactive dogs that had improper previous training or have a hearing or seeing disability. No hate, but if the dog is food motivated, why not just use their food drive?

how so? Clay certainly doesn't act like he's abused. He's not even getting a stimulation in this video. He is only getting a vibration and sound. It's a training tool and doesn't hurt the dog at all. Even at the highest stimulation setting an E collar doesn't hurt the dog.
I speak from a trainer who put the e collar on my 5 month old puppy doberman.. she almost died after 2 days of it . The trainer themselves said she couldn't handle it. I put it in my arm and clicked it where they had it on her and it blew My arm off it hurt so bad .
E Collars are not cruel or abusive. They are not meant to crank up and hurt your dog. They are meant to be a tap on the dogs shoulder more less. And I’ll say it like it is E Collars can be a life saver for a dog and I’m not trying to be rude but obviously you and your trainer do not know much about dog training. Because a quality
E Collar can be set so low on stimulation the dog doesn’t even feel it and then you set it up to the point of where they just feel it. Again I’m not trying to be rude to you. But when people write comments like yours they don’t usually have a clue how to train actual working dogs
