  • Training english setter to retrieve is what we are continuing today in this English Setter training series! Initially, Maquina showed zero interest in retrieving, or even chasing something I would throw. I had to get creative, and do something I have never done with a dog. I started pitching kibble to establish the game of "go chase something and then come back". Low and behold, we had a breakthrough. Training an English Setter to retrieve is not my ultimate goal with our little English Setter puppy, and something that I had gone back and forth on if I even wanted her to retrieve. I have decided I do, now it is just figuring out how to unlock this retrieve. Right away it was apparent that this setter has retrieve in her, we just have to bring it out.
This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pup.
Will she point? Eventually yes, I’m sure of that. Until then, we are enjoying every minute of her “being a puppy” and by that I mean an english setter puppy that makes good choices and is exposed to and held to the standard of behavior we expect. Discipline is not a negative word. Discipline earns freedom.
As always, thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy our new pointing dog training series... "Make the Machine".

How much time a day would you spend training her? How much time would she spend in crate?

She is either with me under 100 percent supervision, on place, or in her kennel. We never allow her to just free run around the house and form bad habits, because she would. They are always learning, so we are always training.

Are you finding that the pointer is harder or easier or about the same to train than labs?

not harder or easier... just different. That being said, there is much overlap as well which I think all goes back to the idea that a dog is a dog.
