Working on seeing if my Golden Retriever Rottweiler Mix (50/50) (4months old - Mötley) can take on hunting. I have introduced him to fetching pigeons at 3 months old, which he loves and is awesome at! He has been doing well but just recently started doing this. This video could not have came at a better time!
Simplify by only throwing the same distance as the length of check cord and keep the pup under control so you can always backup a command or "supervise" play time,
exact same with me got the long lead before singing this video but was intrested to see if there was any easier way but the lonng lead is such a great thing to get and has worked so well
This is a great video and wish I had seen it when mine was a puppy. I'm embarrassed to say, I'm a little late to the game. I am trying to get my 4 year old to retrieve consistently. He would originally retrieve. Then it moved to retrieving as long as I had second object in my hand that he wanted. Now he will retrieve, but then stay in the 10' foot zone and want to play keep away. Will the same "back to the basics" training work for him or does his age require a different approach? Thanks for your help!

Thank you for the video! I have been having a similar problem with my 5 mo. old lab running around. Great to see a video of where things don’t go right and see how you handle it. Any suggestions for when the puppy drops the dummy on the way back and comes to me but doesn’t bring the dummy back the whole way?
What I’ve learned, which might not be the best way, but when you play tug of war with them they learn to want the dummy, and eventually they will realize when you say drop it they will drop it, but playing tug of war makes them want to keep it in their mouths
Is there a reason you don't exchange a treat for the bumper? Getting my puppy next month!!. I love the content. Every video is very informative. I will be a patreon member once she arrives cause I'll have so many questions!!
Though trading treats for bumpers can be an effective way to build recall durning this game, it also often turns in to the dog dropping the bumper in anticipation of the treat. This will grow to the point that bumper could be getting dropped 5-10 feet away which isn’t a good retrieve anymore. Hope we can help with your new pup!
@StandingStoneKennels that makes perfect sense!! You have already helped me so much. I wish you guys were closer to WI so I could get my puppy trained by you!!
I'm still struggling with my lab just chewing on it and playing the keepaway game and then chew on it some more. Any tips? Or any previous videos that you talk about this?
Our lab mix does the same thing with almost every toy but there is one she will actually bring back and not just sit to chew on, maybe try looking for something that your dog responds to? I’m not an expert though so I know sometimes people on RUclips aren’t useful.
I don’t know much about anything so there’s that. But I would just keep taking steps back until the pup is able to be successful. Take it all the way back to a small hallway with no distractions. Experiment with different bumbers or materials. For some reason it didn’t click with my mountain cur pit mix until we used an old rag. Once we played with that for a while he seemed to really start holding on. I would recommend checking out Michael Ellis’s videos on the fundamentals of tug and increasing tug drive. Basically I got our guy to stop chewing on it by playing lots of tug and playing with a flirt pole.
Can Australian shepherds retrieve waterfowl? I’m getting a new pup soon and my buddies say they’re too skittish but I think if I can introduce it to them early enough and slowly and it can work since they’re natural herding dogs
My GSP just made 5 months old and she is doing something similar. She will chase down the bumper sometimes pick it up and sometimes not but when she does she is off to the races. She wants to run or it constantly exploring with that nose. She is stubborn and strong willled. What else should I be doing?
Any advice for water retrieval? I have a pretty good hand on my dog when we are practicing on dry land he will bring me the bumper and deliver it to my hand almost every time (we're still working on it) but when we practice in the water he will just lay down in the water until he's ready to bring it back.
I have a 3 year old dog and a new puppy, the adult used to hunt and retrieve super well but shes stopped actually picking up the retriever, and im trying not to show my frustration but i dont know why shes suddenly stopped. Im planning on training the puppy to hunt as well, but if i cant even get my older dog to retrieve anymore how am i sure i can teach a puppy?
How do you get a dog to want to go after the bumper? I have a dog that is willing to pick one up by himself and chew on it or if I throw it a few times and of course he won't bring it back and I try and play with him to get more drive he just becomes less interested. We have a close bond but he's not much of a toy dog. I want to train him retrieval to help him with his service work and to also train him to find sheds. Any help?
My lab definitely doesn't want to bring it back! He's started to run away then just lay down and chew :( Best way to keep him up and at least running around so I can reel him in? Love your videos!
Has anyone ever trained a black mouth cur to retrieve or work with birds? I know most use them for trailing deer and treeing coons, but wondering if can cross train to retrieve birds.
I have a 5 month old Shorthair pup that just started the keep away thing. Will using the check cord fix this or will I need to have the trained retrieve done later?
My GSP just turned one and retrieves bumpers and things like that perfectly. We got in the field, he pointed a rooster, I flushed and shot him, and my dog sprinted to it and just pointed it again. I couldn’t get him to stop pointing it and bring it back to me. Thoughts on how to get him to retrieve dead birds after he pointed them initially?
Hey my gsp pup is 17.5 weeks old and I am wondering what he should know and what I should be teaching him. This is my first pointer that I am training and I am asking for some help
Our 6 month GSP has no interest in this … I’ve tried all types of toys to even frozen birds. He will get excited while it’s in my hands … I’ll toss it and then he goes to it and then takes off on another scent. It almost seems like his nose is distracting him. We don’t throw it far, only within the limits of the check cord (40ft). Def not giving up he’s too young, But it’s becoming frustrating.
Hi, I will be getting my first GSP pup soon and found your videos to prepare! I had one unrelated question though, do you guys endorse any non profit upland organizations?
My 14 weeks old gsp puppy pine is extremely disinterested in everything except biting my older dachshund. She never ever wags her tail while playing. I just simply can't find anything that is interesting for her. :c She also spits the bumper out whenever she comes to me.
My 4 yo GSP wants to run up to a downed bird and starts trying to eat them. He won’t retrieve to save his life and only sporadically retrieves a tennis ball…. He takes them back into the house and collects them in his kennel. Had him at a trainer for 2 months last season and no improvement.
Yep, this is what I’ve got to work on with my 6 month old lab pup. He’s still testing the boundaries
Thank you guys for this one. I am having this exact issue with my new pup. I appreciate the awesome tips.
Thanks for watching!
Watching this was like watching my self with my new pup so this helped so so much thank you
Shock is such a cute pup! Love her independence! See will be amazing when that is harnessed for good!
My 16 week old lab is doing the same thing. Thanks for this video!
Great video!! Working with our 8 week old golden doodle on retrieving!!
That is awesome!
Love the honesty...super
My dog has the bumper retrieve down. But got his first couple birds last weekend and he did not want to give those up!
Love the Shock videos! I’ve got a pup a few weeks younger than her so they are so relatable!

Side question, how often should I be training him? Everyday, every other day, etc...?
Having this issue with my pup, thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing that it’s not all perfect
Exactly what I needed to see this week! Will help in my training of Ol' Snoop Dog.

Oh boy, Shock is a little pistol! She is so much fun to watch!
this is exactly what’s happening to my 5 month old now, she’s becoming more independent and ignoring commands.
Exact same with mine he’s been retrieving great before now what did you do?
i’m having the issues with my almost 7 month old 😩
exact same with me got the long lead before singing this video but was intrested to see if there was any easier way but the lonng lead is such a great thing to get and has worked so well

15 weeks old. I feel like she'd rather chew on it than hold it

Formal retreiving work sounds like the answer! Check out our playlists on this!

Not sure but they do make great tracking dogs.

Would you recommend this strategy with a 10 month old pup that does the same thing?
This is a decent starting point! Hit us up at Patreon.com/Standingstonekennels
@@StandingStoneKennels When your dog points just let his tail flag
I'm going to try this method with my puppy should I try using treats as well to bring him back?
We try not to use treats durning fetch sessions as it can be distracting to the task.
My new gsp puppy isn’t energetic what could be the problem it’s only 11 weeks
Hi, I will be getting my first GSP pup soon and found your videos to prepare! I had one unrelated question though, do you guys endorse any non profit upland organizations?
What are you doing if she has it in her mouth and then when you start to bring her in she just drops it and won't pick it up again??
My 14 weeks old gsp puppy pine is extremely disinterested in everything except biting my older dachshund. She never ever wags her tail while playing. I just simply can't find anything that is interesting for her. :c

Is it too late to try to reach a 1yr old??
Not at all, check out our trained retrieve course on www.standingstonesupply.com/courses

Go back to a long line. Or retractable line
Thanks for watching
she is a little villain have fun
Freaking love her!
It don’t think it really matters
Doesn’t tug of war create hard mouth in a dog when there older???
Why don't you use treats to reel her in?
You are letting her play, you should make her work.
This is a retrieving breed. Show me where you teach a non-retrieving breed. ;)
