Finally the help I was looking for! Explanations everywhere on how to teach them to walk nicely on a leash, but now finally an explanation of how our Bernese Mountaineering puppy will walk at all outside! Thank you so much!
Absolutely brilliant!! And explained so comprehensibly and logically. In Germany, even the word correction is slowly being interpreted negatively. I look out the window and see people following their dog's tight leash. They think that's nice. Then they wait until the pile finally comes so that they can get home as quickly as possible. Exaggerated, of course. But something like pressure, or offering a solution to give in to it instead of almost strangling yourself, seems to be so unknown to many. In that case, it's better to get an even more padded harness instead of simply explaining the rules to the dog. Which, by the way, allow him to do a lot more. Unruly, unsocialized animals are driven to the edge of the forest in a car. The trunk is open, the leash is already on, the human flies after them. And hopes that he has chosen the loneliest forest path and doesn't meet anyone. Instead of practicing. Unfortunately, he meets other dog owners of the same kind there. The dogs can't play together, of course. They are dragged behind a tree, which - strangely enough - people don't find THAT mean. By the way, all of these learning theories apply exactly to horses too. First lure, then mark with the reward word, then immediately reward. Name it when you like it. Since I have understood all of this, which requires learning, not from the animal but from yourself, everything has been easy. Excellent Will, love and kindness and a true respect for the puppy's natural instinct is at the heart of your training and it is just great. Thank you for producing this video for us to watch.
RE: Sully Fellow that used to work with me takes in rescue dogs. He has 2 that he brings with him to work everyday. We have 20 acres of race track so they have plenty of room to do dog stuff. Whenever he gets a new rescue, he'll bring it in with the other 2. After a month of that, it's amazing how much the rescue gets "trained" by the other 2.
Just got a puppy and your videos have really really helped us! Thank you so much. Would you consider doing a video on how to manage your dog around other reactive dogs? Uncle Sully is the bestest most beautiful boy ever 🥰 Thanks so much for your wonderful education and guidance, I’m absorbing it all in preparation for a puppy. I’m prepping more for a puppy than I did for a baby 😂
Awesome info, has helped me with my rescue puppy who I got 3 days ago. She had no manners, no obedience, but in three days I have her toilet, crate, auto sit and heel trained to a degree, not perfect, still needs lots of practice and reinforcement but she has come so far already. Just need to get the nipping, jumping and reactivity sorted. She will be teaching my role model dog some tips soon 😂 thank you
my role model dog is a mutt female 80 pounds.... the other dog is a 27 pound mini american shepard. if he tries to run she stands still and well... a sudden halt is an understatement if he ever tries it. my 55 pound aussie is nuts but he walks good..lol
Same principle whatever circumstances, behaviour you don’t want gets a negative response (lead pressure, popping lead and going other way etc essentially stopping dog reinforcing the unwanted action). Behaviour you do want gets a positive reaction (food, ball etc).
May I ask what kind of treat are you holding? I can’t really see if you’re actually giving the treat or if she’s just licking on it every time you reward her?😊
Thank you for this and many other great videos. How would your process be for returning from the play ground in this situation (end of video) when the puppy is (as you descried it) cooked. Or would you suggest to simply avoid any issues by carrying the pup back?
See, our new 14 week old puppy is so excited to be outside that he literally does not stop pulling, usually someone who loves treats he couldn't care less about them outside. We have tried turning direction everytime he pulls, tried rewarding any eye contact but he never gives eye contact at all - he is wayyyy too focused on all the news things that he is constantly straining in one direction then the other. He doesnt act like this when we practice lead at home or in the garden, as soon as we walk outside he just loses his mind. 😢
Hello! I have a question! I recently watched some of your videos including an older one on teaching an English Mastiff Eileen to heel outside by repeating pressure/release reward technique. My question is, how would you do this with an older dog who doesnt mind the pressure? My sons Rotty has started pulling when my son walks him, though he behaves for me. How do I get him to quit pulling my son around?
My Cockapoo is 16 weeks old. He's now toilet trained. He loves playing hide and seek the treat and playing ball. He sits, stays, does recall perfectly, even up the field on an extension lead, unless there are other distractions! The main problem I have is he literally gallops on his way to the field, and I'm shattered by time I get home (I'm 71). I've got a slip lead and he walks perfectly with it indoors looking up at me as he walks, but it all goes out the window when outside 😢. I really need some help getting to grips with it.
Hi, i asked on a previous video but didn't get any answer, probably you guys are really busy and i understand that. My son dog is getting me woried, it's a mix from german sheaperd, rotweller and pug. She is +/- 3 years old and she is clearly a jealous dog and she's trying to show her superiority in every way possible with other dog. She still other dog toy go lay down 3 feet away with it and wait to the dog to go get his toy back and snap him. When she eat if she is alone she eat normaly but if there is another dog in the room then she sit still in front of her bowl and wait until the other dog to come around to grawl and snap him to then take a bite or two to go rince and repeat. I know exactly what is hapening but since my son never see me with a dog mostly because i had enough responsability with the familly and i didn't have time for a dog and i kneew it. So my word is worthless to my son. I really need help from someone before this dog goes wrong because she is still a good dog she just need guidance but my son doesn't see the danger and he is 24 so i have nothing to say anymore. Maybe if a dog trainer is saying it he will believe it? BTW thanks for the free course it really helped me refresh my knowledge and learn new tips.
What do you do if you’ve been given a 13 month old cane corso 3 weeks ago and she is digging in, I’ve noticed her tail is between her legs when she is out of her comfort zone. No treats work, she refused treats in this situation. She’s had no lead training and I am doing my best
Do these kind of tips how to train leash walking work when both owners act the role of distraction? Like My partner is leading and I try to distract so that she seperately listens only to the one holding the leash. And then afterwards do it the other way around so that the dog only listens again to the one holding the leash? So that it works for both owners?
I’m struggling with crate training. He was great the day we brought him home but the next day he got a baby tooth stuck on crate and he has refused to stay in there . I’m so frustrated
I’m struggling with my 5 month old female GSP with pulling the leash. I spent an hour with the change direction ‘let’s go’ training and she still pulls enough to hurt my back! What am I doing wrong?
I took my gsd puppy to a dog trainer who advised to use a head collar for her pulling. (trainer didnt last long, was very unhappy with him, despite him being a reportedly good trainer). She is really good with it but pulls like crazy without. I dont like using the collar as she hates it. Any advice how to reduce this ? But also to help with her pulling when on the slip lead. She is going to be a big girl so the pulling without the head collar is a real priblem waitng to happen. Other than this ,her training is coming along nicely. She is 5.5 months
Asking all with respect- Have you researched E collors and how they work/operate and can be changed as some are more of a vibrate some are more of a shock so to speak? have you tried one on your body or areas that could be used with said dog.. id personally would if it was going on my furry friend and i dont mean this against you or anyone else. i just think it could be the best choice to consider in my own brain way of thinking. I know you are not asking me.. ill just add that i am against them personally.. maybe because i have never felt the need to use something extra of this type of training method as i am voice and gestures and believe in positive reinforcement.. i am actually anti collors in general not only e collors.. i will say i am using a collor right now as its easier to control dog when turning and walking as when i had harness my dog loved to pull then sit where as now i can just step to the side and do a gentle brief little (this way) which is like a small tap and the dog will turn in that direction but off lead her recall of (this way) or (that way) is incredbile but on lead she thinks she makes the path but off lead she knows if she walks one direction i will go 180 in the other and we wont get anywhere soon or where they want to sometimes i often just duck behind a car or tree i even climbed a tree one time and watched them roun around the tree as they knew i was there but not 10ft above them and watch them try find me by making a game out of this its helped them find me and helped them pay attention to me.. so tbh if i fell off a cliff into bushes or something i think my dog would notice within 1minute max they will happilyy explore the whole woods/field but they will not leave me completly out of sight or they will come sprinting back looking for me only once my dog left my side and that was playing with crows who the crows kept returning my dog to me then going off to play which was amazing to see tbh.. the crows were like okay dog time out stay at your owner then they would go back and forth chasing each other peacefully even chill within a few feet of each other.. ive even made it on how i see them used and abused on dogs and just the fact its on the neck of an animal nothing more slave than that being chained around the neck for a walk and pee lol i am not anti dog ecollors if they are used humanly at a lower level for bigger more aggressive dogs if needed as a more last resort.. Can i ask without judgement regardless if its personal or not as to why you feel the need to ask about e collors, i am just genuinely curious fine either way. if my input seems personal or anything i apoligise..
Will. Please can you take my dog for free and get her all the health checks she needs.. as i have been to vets and they claimed she was fine for 1.5years and she is now 2 and another vet just told me she seems fine but needs further examination... just been in contact with another vet and they say i need xrays to check and i cant afford anything i am going to be turning my fridge off next week at this point and i dont want my dog to suffer and by suffer i mean if shes in pain or limited i want her out of pain and to be unlimited.. she has never been short of anything else in life.. shes a wonderful dog all love no bite loyal to the bone litterly as loyal as i am and it breaks my heart to even think of letting her go but i feel this is the only right decision as it would be selfish of me to hold onto her if she is needing medical attention.. but to have her in a condition that is needing money when i have just lost everything all i have is an emtpy shell of a house which well might not even last at this point either my whole world come crashing down in less than a week i am still going strong its only my dog i want cared for please.. i would rather give her a life she deserves if i could add on debt to pay more i would but i have maxed out on debt which all started with vet bills funny enough we have spent so much time together doing everything i really dont want to let her go i dont this has took me so long and so much to write this dogs are truly my companion my reason to get up go out and explore but somehow life will find ways to just put a rock on your feet and then will wave those dreams just out of reach. thanks for reading. hope your all well
Please can somebody help me! I'm training my dog up to be my assistance dog, so he needs to be brilliant walking on a lead, but he is a very little dog, and I have mobility issues and can't get down to his level easily. I'm struggling to figure out how to teach him to heel nicely. Anyone got any tips or tricks??
My pup drags me back home soon as I turn in that direction. I could be miles away! Soon is i turn towards home he starts choking himself out. I feel so bad for the wee dude. He makes himself sick. Thinking I'll give up, purchase some kind of body harness and except that he pulls but at least he's not hurting himself anymore. :(
@@Frankm44 yield to pressure with high rewards. drop his main food supply… dont starve him but give him less food, make him a little more hungry and then when you walk on the leash use the kibble or treats if you have to although good kibble or something you can feed in great quantity will be best, but use that so that he is more inclined to come to you when you apply the yield to pressure method as seen throughout this video. very helpful.
I have the same issue. I can have her absolute favourite treat and try to entice or even give it to my puppy and she won't eat. She won't even drink whilst out because she's anxious.
@@sbomorseI had that problem too. I focused on the leash pressure and luring inside first. And I had to do it a little more inside (even though it seemed easy inside, we kept practicing there). That made outside work better when she’s not as food driven outside.
If you search on RUclips, Ben Marsh " Teach them to walk better today" and also Beckham's Dog Training " Fastest loose leash walking method" they both touch on what to do if your dog doesn't not respond to treats
That was exactly my thought .. I guess you don't treat all the time after it's happening ok all the time .. just praise and sometimes gives a treat and the puppy is getting used to being brave and trusting you're in control and it's okay to walk. We're picking up our new puppy in 2 days time and it's been a long time since we've had one so these vids are great.
OK, I am not sure I understand why this works. 4:45 - 6:40 From outside it looks that she gets a treat every time she originally stops and refuses to go. Yes, she needs to move after that stopping to actually get the food but to get the trainer take the food out of his pocket she needs to stop first. Why doesn't this technique send her the message to stop every few steps?
I think it will end up teaching the dog that this unwanted behaviour will lead to treats. My puppy won't touch treats whilst she's outside on her lead because she's anxious.
Treats=Positive reinforcement but treats= distractions also.. just like how we need food but in order for food we rely on purchasng food and in order of that is to get a job/contract so we made a deal with the devil that we will abide by contract in order to survive we will use their promise notes called money/currency because it flows between us beings etc.. nobody works for free we all have better things to do regardless whats (better) to others. if you got a dog and doing by treats.. id truly say... start by using kibble/biscuits/dog bowl food.. not treats so you can work on what is more important for you dog and if your dog doesn't listen to come=biscuit then maybe using come=chicken or come=5bicuits.. this is a way so your dog relys on you as source of food and nobody else.. it actually creates bonds and trust.. most dogs will choose food over play if you catch them just before engagement so it works great as a semi simple universal things.. if you are replying as ( standard dog trainer train=treats as in ( nothing new heard it all before.. then ultimately yes most trainers use this as mentioned at start of my reply as distractions.. pay attention to the hand that feeds you at all times.. or when asked/called but theres alot more than just treat... example my friend uses the word (TREAT) rather than (COME) and wonders why his dog doesnt (COME) or when the dog does (come) it runs away because it has arrived at the distance of (good boy) and then goes off again but you want him to do what ( come= sit by my side until i release ) i do not use (come) i use the word ( a-Key) which means (right side stay) i used words you maybe never heard of me and my dogs speak in code ive managed to give them a look or nod without training just by understanding them and allowing them to understand me on how i want them to react.. the nod might not always get them to sit but they know what i ask when i look.. dont touch the ball go get the ball all commucated by a quick look or nod or even a slight mention of the name on how i use the name they will know whats coming or atleast 90% of the time.. this way i have control of my dog not any random stranger etc if my dog knew what treats meant she would have been knocked down sevral times and snatched treats from peoples hands.. just by the amount of people who use that word loudly or to shout on my dogs and say come get treats then my dog will just look at person weird and move on.. reason i use different words is because my whole brain works in codes since i was a child and i realised no better way to use it than on my dog to help our bond and to help me use codes i have in a meaningful way.. because the world is in code so why not play with it rather than being dumb and numb to the world.. dont get me wrong my dogs wil still jump on the odd person or steal another dogs ball but with a quick correction and guidence into doing or asking for something else they will re engage and not return to stealing that dogs ball... i once got laughed at by many at a gathering bbq with multiple dogs roaming about freely for putting my dog in time out just as i heard 3 dogs fighting aggressivly caused by a tiny dog that bit one dog... 3 dogs started fighting within 2seconds i managed to stop them getting teeth in although my dog was away to get attacked and not involved at all i used it for a couple minutes in the corner of the garden to come follow me now sit and wait here then i released her once i got back to my seating and gave her a few more seconds now 2years later everyone says nobody knows someone who knows dogs better than i, i dont say or agree with this as a whole.. but i will say those who i meet daily or most dog owners i dont think should own dogs.. because of the lack of understanding/corrections they could do.. ive trained more peoples dogs quicker than i have mines because i am/was in the long run with my dogs where as others just get pets i wanted a campionship for life.. they want a behaved dog thats all.. my dog has been attacked numerous times by known aggressive dogs and each time i believe everything i did saved my dogs life... from the moment i had my dogs given them the trust to trust each other.. ive managed to roll on the ground with incoming dogs even rolled down a hill with a pitbull on my stomach trying to riggle free to attack my dog and had my dog wait a few feet away until said owner come and collect there well bahaved never attacked anyone or anything type dog before and not get involved where as i know with 100% my dog she would get involved and defend me as i see when things have happened in the past where i have to get inbetween her and said people and wants to but if she can come to me ill take the dog down myself people have never payed for my vet bills and i will be sure they will pay for the damage if any dog does further damage to me or my dogs but i will prevent that at all costs no pun intended.. no threats either. ive had enough of dog owners and there uncontrolled loose dogs.. if my dog ran to there dogs or something id understand but your dog charges at my dog with pure intention of fighting.. my friends dad has had dogs all his life.. in the last year he lost 2 in the woods by a guy who let his dogs loose for a walk who savaged these dogs his first died so his wife bought another then he went to another set of woods and his 2nd dog died also so he got a third and the third is severaly injured.. why is it the people who truly love and dedicate there lifes to dogs put up with the most pain? anyways thank you for reading i wouldnt stop typing if i do not stop where i did. so have a lovely day. 2Ruth-
@@sbomorse true. I prefer not to use treats. I know this isn't the norm but then our dog expects treats all the time. You know how much money we spent on treats per month for a Doberman?? Too much. So we are finding other ways.

Everyv video i see thepuppy is fairly calm . What about the puppywho is highenergy who is bitingthe leash and jumping out of control?
Teach her the obedience basics he keeps talking about
Always really calm chilled puppy. NOTHING like mine so is hard to relate.

Uncle Sully is the cheat code! Could I borrow him?
Also do you have any tips for helping an older dog want to play with a pup?
What if uou have an older dog that pulls and you dont want the new oup to do the same? Shiuld we still walk them together?
What are the treats you use?
I heard him say beef liver (at about the 3 minute mark of the video). Probably fries them up and then chops into smaller pieces for use.
Would this technique work with a 3 year old dog as well?
What kind of crates are those?
What best crates for travel? See some in background?
See, our new 14 week old puppy is so excited to be outside that he literally does not stop pulling, usually someone who loves treats he couldn't care less about them outside.

What's your view on ecollars?
Hello just rehomed a 9month pup do you have any videos on how to distract from cats
So that it works for both owners?
how do i do this with a 5 lb dog though, because my back hurts from bending over to treat
Would be nice to know how old the Puppy in training is at this point ? Thanks for the video :-)
Same, I'm just going through the comments to find the same. My puppy is 13wks and doesn't like walks
I’m struggling with crate training. He was great the day we brought him home but the next day he got a baby tooth stuck on crate and he has refused to stay in there . I’m so frustrated
Will has an amazing video on crate training, look it up. It revolves around very short periods of time and treats in the crate.
What to do with a puppy who does mot get motivated with treats
What is your view on e collars?
Asking all with respect-
Have you researched E collors and how they work/operate and can be changed as some are more of a vibrate some are more of a shock so to speak? have you tried one on your body or areas that could be used with said dog.. id personally would if it was going on my furry friend and i dont mean this against you or anyone else. i just think it could be the best choice to consider in my own brain way of thinking.
I know you are not asking me.. ill just add that i am against them personally.. maybe because i have never felt the need to use something extra of this type of training method as i am voice and gestures and believe in positive reinforcement.. i am actually anti collors in general not only e collors.. i will say i am using a collor right now as its easier to control dog when turning and walking as when i had harness my dog loved to pull then sit where as now i can just step to the side and do a gentle brief little (this way) which is like a small tap and the dog will turn in that direction but off lead her recall of (this way) or (that way) is incredbile but on lead she thinks she makes the path but off lead she knows if she walks one direction i will go 180 in the other and we wont get anywhere soon or where they want to sometimes i often just duck behind a car or tree i even climbed a tree one time and watched them roun around the tree as they knew i was there but not 10ft above them and watch them try find me by making a game out of this its helped them find me and helped them pay attention to me.. so tbh if i fell off a cliff into bushes or something i think my dog would notice within 1minute max they will happilyy explore the whole woods/field but they will not leave me completly out of sight or they will come sprinting back looking for me only once my dog left my side and that was playing with crows who the crows kept returning my dog to me then going off to play which was amazing to see tbh.. the crows were like okay dog time out stay at your owner then they would go back and forth chasing each other peacefully even chill within a few feet of each other.. ive even made it on how i see them used and abused on dogs and just the fact its on the neck of an animal nothing more slave than that being chained around the neck for a walk and pee lol
i am not anti dog ecollors if they are used humanly at a lower level for bigger more aggressive dogs if needed as a more last resort..
Can i ask without judgement regardless if its personal or not as to why you feel the need to ask about e collors, i am just genuinely curious fine either way. if my input seems personal or anything i apoligise..
Will. Please can you take my dog for free and get her all the health checks she needs.. as i have been to vets and they claimed she was fine for 1.5years and she is now 2 and another vet just told me she seems fine but needs further examination... just been in contact with another vet and they say i need xrays to check and i cant afford anything i am going to be turning my fridge off next week at this point and i dont want my dog to suffer and by suffer i mean if shes in pain or limited i want her out of pain and to be unlimited.. she has never been short of anything else in life.. shes a wonderful dog all love no bite loyal to the bone litterly as loyal as i am and it breaks my heart to even think of letting her go but i feel this is the only right decision as it would be selfish of me to hold onto her if she is needing medical attention.. but to have her in a condition that is needing money when i have just lost everything all i have is an emtpy shell of a house which well might not even last at this point either my whole world come crashing down in less than a week i am still going strong its only my dog i want cared for please.. i would rather give her a life she deserves if i could add on debt to pay more i would but i have maxed out on debt which all started with vet bills funny enough we have spent so much time together doing everything i really dont want to let her go i dont this has took me so long and so much to write this dogs are truly my companion my reason to get up go out and explore but somehow life will find ways to just put a rock on your feet and then will wave those dreams just out of reach.
thanks for reading.
hope your all well
Uncle Sully is a god.
Looks like the behaviour- ist could do with a few good walks
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Please can somebody help me!
I'm training my dog up to be my assistance dog, so he needs to be brilliant walking on a lead, but he is a very little dog, and I have mobility issues and can't get down to his level easily. I'm struggling to figure out how to teach him to heel nicely. Anyone got any tips or tricks??
I know its been a month but have you tried putting a more liquid treat (like a soft cheese) on the end of a lure stick perhaps?
My pup drags me back home soon as I turn in that direction. I could be miles away! Soon is i turn towards home he starts choking himself out. I feel so bad for the wee dude. He makes himself sick. Thinking I'll give up, purchase some kind of body harness and except that he pulls but at least he's not hurting himself anymore. :(
I just kept pulling the lead until she walked but I'll introduce treats now,
I have a whippet puppy who does this but doesn’t care about food
I don't see a treat in your hand the puppy is licking. What are you using?
My puppy doesn’t want to walk on the leash at all he just sits or he walks a little and stops and chews on his leash
Figured how to solve it?
He's a cat
@@Frankm44 yield to pressure with high rewards. drop his main food supply… dont starve him but give him less food, make him a little more hungry and then when you walk on the leash use the kibble or treats if you have to although good kibble or something you can feed in great quantity will be best, but use that so that he is more inclined to come to you when you apply the yield to pressure method as seen throughout this video. very helpful.
Kind girl 21
My puppy doesn't care about treats on walks though, you can put them next to her mouth and she won't bother to eat them..
Could you try your puppies' favourite toy, maybe?
I have the same issue. I can have her absolute favourite treat and try to entice or even give it to my puppy and she won't eat. She won't even drink whilst out because she's anxious.
@@sbomorseI had that problem too. I focused on the leash pressure and luring inside first. And I had to do it a little more inside (even though it seemed easy inside, we kept practicing there). That made outside work better when she’s not as food driven outside.
If you search on RUclips, Ben Marsh " Teach them to walk better today" and also Beckham's Dog Training " Fastest loose leash walking method" they both touch on what to do if your dog doesn't not respond to treats
easy with a well behaved dog lol
You’re rewarding the dog to not go with the leash pressure with your timing and the way you represent the food
But wouldn’t this make her associate digging in with getting a treat?
Moral of the story? Bring LOTS of treats🙄
puppies can ve hard to train so the treats or just its kibble is a good motivator to get them up a gear haha
2Ruth-
Unless your dog is anxious and refuses to eat even their favourite treats.
@@sbomorse true. I prefer not to use treats. I know this isn't the norm but then our dog expects treats all the time. You know how much money we spent on treats per month for a Doberman?? Too much. So we are finding other ways.
My girls are pulling like crazy. I hope there's a video about that.
