I am thrilled to have learned this and am so grateful for your trainings!! The owner of the dog was shocked at how calm her pup was when we got back.

My yr old Golden, who was born with cataracts, is reactive and pulls so badly on walks that she leaves my shoulders aching. She is a perfect walker in the morning, but mad in the afternoon. I've just received my Fenrir training lead and the first walk was 70% better. Immediately listening to command more, and less aggressive pulling. I have to perfect the flick of the lead, but thank you so much.
Excellent video. You show that you truly understand not just the mechanics of dog training, but you understand the psychology of the dogs themselves. One of the best videos I've seen!!!
My dogs aren't too bad on leash, but boot camp is forcing us to practice a lot. I got tired of the constant slight pull my young dog kept on the collar, and the 180's weren't working; then I suddenly realized they didn't know how to "yield to pressure", which is something you have to train horses to do. Last night we did a yielding session with treats. This mornings walk was close to perfect. When either dog drifted too far in the wrong direction, two fingers of pressure brought them back into position. I walk in the desert with lots of obstacles; being able to easily indicate left of the rock or right of the cactus eliminates the constant untangling of the leashes. This is loose leash walking, we also practice in heel position.

This is my FAVORITE channel to watch regarding behavior modification and training. Not only training the dog but the human as well! Please keep up the great work!!!! Fenrir all the way!!!
Thanks Will- I use your methods and an easy walk lead and my Golden boy Bandit is now a good walker. For the first three years I despaired. Tried everything and the slip lead and the easy walk really made a huge difference along with direction changes and treats for reinforcement. Thanks for all you do to save dogs !
I've watched all sorts of training videos, even Caesar Milan's, but this is the only technique that is working for my puppy. Some other videos showed this type of technique but did not drill home the why, how, or what-to-do-ifs. Thanks so much!
Hi pal, we inherited a young French, staffy cross some months ago and he’s been very reactive. To do the right thing by the dog, we’ve started lessons to help correct some of his behaviour. As part of this process I’ve been watching your RUclips videos and hats of to you and your team for doing these videos and for helping people and dogs work together and for nothing. Well done!
Oh My Goodness. This was so helpful. I trained my dog in the backyard for about 15 minutes and he followed all these good boy habits. Now I’m excited to take him for a walk and see how he does outside. Will update soon. Thank you so much 🙏
The way you deliver this man is something else 👌 can’t wait for my fenrir slip lead to come today to start my journey, my cockapoo is 6 years old but he’s so clever and he definitely sees me as his master/guide he just needs a little bit of help with pulling on the lead other than that he’s perfect such a lovely dog
Hi Will, I have a 5 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier that loves to pull on the lead! Will definitely be using this training method to hopefully improve her heel work, thanks from NZ!
To teach yield, apply a very small amount of pressure at about 45 degrees to one side. When the dog cocks an ear, or turns their head a fraction of on inch in that direction, release, and praise with a treat. After a few tries mine started moving a foot in the direction of pressure, then a shoulder, then their whole body. We did it right, left, forward, and back.
Wheres coopers 2nd session? I’ve searched and can’t find it!! This morning i did the above video with my 7 month lab and for the first time in ages I didn’t return home in tears. IT WORKED THANK YOU ❤
I recognize you can stop the pulling quite easily, but I would love to see the owner walk the dog after your session, in order to see if the dog has the same respect for him/her as it has for you being a stranger for the dog. My experience is that it is way harder to change the dogs behaviour as a dog owner than it is for a person the dog hasn't met before.
I have the same problem, dog has coded to misbehaveon leash when with us, she's generally very friendly and obedient with strangers and even at the dog park she checks in with strangers rather than us, it's kind of depressing coz we treat her like a princess lol. Perhaps I should get a stranger to teach her leash walk!!!
@@adunzoroq33 because the dog thinks he owns you not the other way around. It's like a baby, if you spoil him/her, she will see you as a servant rather than a guardian.
It’s all about patients and when it’s your dog build a bond try in distraction free areas, don’t just go to a park and copy this if your dog doesn’t respect you , training is a lifetime thing with dogs, don’t force it and always end on a good note!!!
This video really helped me, my 9 month old pitbull terrier used to pull really bad, I do this tune up before we walk in the back yard, before walks, and she walks so responsively after only 5 days. Still a bit of trouble with squirrels but being bred for rodent hunting it's to be expected with the breed. Thanks for sharing these videos sir.
Thank you so much for your content. Just discovered your channel. I am currently fostering avec VERY aggressive Pitbull and the shelter is of little help. Its been 2 weeks and although I will not give up, the walks are a nightmare. She could kill any dog, person, squirrel etc. I look forward to watching more of your videos as I feel I am running out of options. Cheers from Montreal, Canada.
I love that this is about establishing clear and positive communication. Dogs are amazing team players and this technique seems to utilize their natural pack instinct combined with their bond to humans to get a happy, calm, thinking-mode dog
Can't wait to start this with my retrievers. You talk about leadership, can this mean all humans in the house should be leaders and not just one adult? I would think yes if we're all giving the same leadership...?
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate your approach to training and certainly agree with you. I have had the great experience of owning a Border Collie GSD mix. Jezebel was an amazing girl who thrived from this type of training. She always knew I was in charge, through my constant feedback. I used voice, hand and eye input to follow me all of the time. As a herder, she was most comfortable observing the surroundings, always alert to my instructions. I'm now looking for a new dog, as Jezebel died in late May this year. I think treating a dog as a small child goes a long way to forming a loving, trusting relationship
The dogs you have look so calm on the videos, I'd love you to fix my lab for a video because he's an absolute nutter, lunging, barking, pulling....he'd be perfect for a video to show how good you are 👍
Thank you so much for this! I have a 15mo irish setter who pulls like crazy, even when wearing a halti head collar. I hate walking him because I end up with a sore back every time. I hadn't even realised that my demeanour would make a difference - I'm always nervous on our walks because he pulled me over onto the road when he was 6mo and I hit the road with my face. Not fun. I'm going to try your method today.
I really would like to see the owners walking this retriever right after and see the progression of the dog over time in order to have confidence in your approche. I urgently need to adopt an approach which will work for my strong, young dog both for pulling and for serious aggression towards other dogs.
Thank you and thank you again! I have just picked up a three-year-old Siberian Husky from a shelter in LA and she pulls like crazy! I do not want to 'employ' a pronged collar on her so I shall practice your guidance. Greeting from a Brit residing in the USA
While I've watched many videos of dog trainers, I really appreciate your technique, and your passion for dogs. I have a 7 month old golden doodle who is super sweet, but our biggest challenge is walking on a loose leash. Your video here is super helpful Thank you so much.
The tools you have provided on this channel have been so valuable for me. I am working on training our new golden doodle pup how to walk on a leash and this has been so helpful during my training sessions. Also congratulations on your new space! It's soooo exciting for the growth of your mission. Will what are your thoughts on off leash hiking? ideally I would love to be able to go hiking with our new pup once he is older and able to do so.
how is it going? what did you find? I have a 4 mo lab that I have been free-running around our acreage, working on recall under increasing distance and distractions. kibble is working so far.
My 10 month old ridgeback x lab won’t give me eye contact for engagement. I’ve only had her 10 days but she just doesn’t give eye contact. Any tips? Is she possibly grieving former owners?
Thank you for keeping it real. I was glad to hear that a slip lead can fall down a bit so I know that it's something that just happens and can be corrected not necessarily that I'm doing something wrong. I am very keen to try the exercise with our very strong 18-month old black lab cross NZ Heading dog.
This is brilliantly helpful! Do you have additional suggestions for a very fearful, anxious dog (2 year old English Pointer who received zero socialization) who just wants to glue her nose to the ground with every change of direction?
Amazing transformation! I am wondering if this approach would be appropriate for a dog that pulls due to high prey drive (squirrels, bunnies, birds, chipmunks)? She’s always “on the hunt”! Which is something I know we also have to address separately. Anyways thanks for sharing the best content always!
I'm looking forward to part 2 of this pulling dog, my 5 months puppy is always very excited when other dogs are around, just wondering what can I do to make improvements.
I have a super puller. He is so not engaged with me. I am not a great dog owner. I let him pull. And he barks at any other being on the street. Going to for sure try your methods. He is a smart boy if I work with him. Doing it this weekend!!! Thank you for your video!!
You are brilliant man. Ive got a 9 month old black labrador retriever. Hes amazing on recall so o keep him off the lead 8p% of the time. But he pulls a lot on the lead. Ive just bought a slip lead for him so hoping this works. Youre videos are really helpful. And I agree with you: labradir retrievers are the best dogs ever!!
Love all your videos - amazing content and appreciate the explanations and detail in each video! Can’t wait for the slip lead to come back into stock and fine tune my teenage collie/lab walking 😁 she needs to re learn who’s boss at the moment!
I have a 5 month old stubborn as GSD and whenever I change direction he just pulls in that direction, also pays absolutely zero attention to me/food/toys on lead. Any suggestions would be great, thanks! 👍🏼
@@RichQuintyn I'm not a professional but I would suggest building engagement in an environment with minimal distraction just to build the foundation of the dog engaging with you.
@@RichQuintyn I finally did it and bought a Herm Sprenger 2.25! After leaving it sat on the coffee table for about 2 weeks and continuing to be dragged around the block by my GSD whilst he barks at everything and anything that moves within a half mile radius, I decided tonight was the night I tried it… Leaving the house I had slight whimpers as I think he was a little unsure but by the end of the road (20 steps at most) he was walking like an absolute dream! By my side constantly and forever looking up to me for guidance. Only VERY slight corrections, literally a flick of the wrist, when he stopped to sniff and he soon fell back in line. When approaching other dogs and people I used to have to either cross the street and drag him away whilst he’s barking and lunging over the street or walk in a completely different direction before he spotted them, now just walks straight past people and DOGS! I honestly cannot get over the difference using this has done and wish I did it sooner, he enjoyed it so much more as did I. Could NOT recommend enough!
Excited to try this with my BC x Huntatway on our walk tonight. He is very strong boy and a strong puller too, so I’m really hoping this helps to make our walks much more enjoyable for us both🥰
Great video, thank you! I will be trying this technique with my 2 year dog which I have addopted recently from a dog shelter here in Portugal. She is a big dog and needs rules!
Love your videos, very informative. This is something I put into practice with my 1 year old lab and she responds great. I also have a stubborn 8 month old boxer who doesn't respond that well to this type of training his mind is racing constantly and seems to be on high alert, he pulls and darts all over the place. He's my second boxer, my first I had no issues training. Any suggestions for keeping his attention on me?
Great instruction! We have a 2 year old gorgeous yellow lab that was trained to be a search and recovery dog who charges at squirrels. Only had him 2 months so far and we’re having challenges. I say he’s been institutionalized for the first 2 years of his life and doesn’t know how to behave in a family home yet. Pulls like crazy and is so strong. Please ANY suggestions?!!! Thx 🐾🐾
I wish I lived near you, I've got an American bulldog staffy cross and he's strong and pulls all the time and towards other dogs, going to need to try this!!
I am a senior and inherited a Patterdale Terrior who was originally a rescue dog. He is very strong and since we have 2 dogs I understand I will need to train him separately. He also has quite a few accidents in areas where he not usually allowed to go if we forget to close the door to that area. I am getting really frustrated with him he is about 5yrs old. Do you have other dogs you train like this?
Hi I love your videos. I need some help I have two male dogs who I love to bits but have started fighting all the time both me and my husband have been bitten through it. We now have muzzled the instagater
Got a black lab only 6months old but growing fast and started to pull really hard so much so that she starts choking and still pulls. Spent the last couple of weeks keep pulling her back to my side. This has no effect at all!!! Must have pulled her back hundreds of times. Tried this method today for first time. Normal collar. Have started to make progress already. The things that worked well was the 180 degree turn for no reason, and was saying “let’s go” to her and gave a firm tug on the lead. When she started pulling again, I just repeated the move. Also don’t go on a walk the dog knows, choose a random route and keep changing direction, otherwise they will think they know where to go and will try to lead the way. Make plenty of random turns. If she is say on the left and you turn left, Walk through her space don’t walk around her. Be very assertive, but not aggressive. Be calm and walk with confidence. If you cross the road, walk at 90 degrees across the road so she doesn’t know which way you are going to turn when you get to the other side. Keep her guessing so she has to look to you for instruction. After 20 mins of this my dog started looking at me more and more which she never has done before. I gave her praise and somethings a treat if she turned with me or paid attention to me. By the end of the walk she sometimes walked on a loose lead, sometimes pulled a bit but nowhere near like she did before. And she wasn’t pulling into grass and bushes to sniff out others dogs scent as much. Not perfect but a few more walks and I think we will be getting there. The biggest positive sign is when they keep glancing up at you. They are then giving up control to you. They will be happier in the long run with you in control. Thanks for this great video!!! 👍👍
I really enjoy your video's on training. We just adopted a smart shepherd mix and need to train her a bit more, she knows some commands already, your technique is very easy for me to follow.
The Goldens here in the US can be pretty large. The biggest problem I have is not pulling, but rather laying down and not going. I have walked three Goldens that do this. Lovely dog.
I am using this method to train my black lab/pitbull mix (and who knows what else?) who is more than happy to drag me around by the leash. I don't have a slip lead; he wears a walking vest that's supposed to inhibit pulling but doesn't. Anyway, I drilled him using this and other Fenrir videos, and he's doing very well. We have yet to get by a squirrel without some major pulling, but we'll keep working on it.
my dogs favorite treats(pizza) and my praising gets ignored when we are outside. she wont look at me or focus on me or the treats all. but your video helped me realize I was being impatient and wasn't stopping enough! and need to try to train her in a less distracting environment first
Love your videos Will, I've liked and subscribed. What about allowing them to "stop and smell" (the roses) or other scents since dogs are so heavily driven by this? Shouldn't we allow them to stop and smell things, fire hydrants, trees, etc.? I read (or watched a YT video) that it shows we love them by allowing them to stop and smell.

Great advice, I needed some help, but just wanted to say: A dogs smile always makes me happy, they're so contagious
I've watched all sorts of training videos, even Caesar Milan's, but this is the only technique that is working for my puppy. Some other videos showed this type of technique but did not drill home the why, how, or what-to-do-ifs. Thanks so much!
So far, these videos are the only ones that actually help me with my dog. Thanks! 👍
Well done!
You have no idea how proud I am of you all. I wish I lived there man. I'd work there for free.
I'm a trainer we use similar methods, I work for free to prevent dogs from being destroyed, it good to see you doing the same.
Great to see that you've found your piece of land - your ambition to keep dogs from shelters and the euthanasia-table is admirable. Good luck !!
Oh My Goodness. This was so helpful. I trained my dog in the backyard for about 15 minutes and he followed all these good boy habits. Now I’m excited to take him for a walk and see how he does outside. Will update soon. Thank you so much 🙏
update??
@@jewelery46 I didn't do much training but I think he's doing great now.
IT WORKED THANK YOU ❤
thank you guys so much!! im getting a schnauzer soon and i feel so excited to start building a relationship with him and giving him a happy life
I recognize you can stop the pulling quite easily, but I would love to see the owner walk the dog after your session, in order to see if the dog has the same respect for him/her as it has for you being a stranger for the dog. My experience is that it is way harder to change the dogs behaviour as a dog owner than it is for a person the dog hasn't met before.
I’m thinking the same thing!
@@adunzoroq33 "treat her like a princess" could be the problem ...
@@capricorn1970i I agree
Bless you for your work
I love that this is about establishing clear and positive communication. Dogs are amazing team players and this technique seems to utilize their natural pack instinct combined with their bond to humans to get a happy, calm, thinking-mode dog
I'm watching your videos and like what u do, where about are u please I have an out of control pup he's 7 months and just pulls at everything
Hey man you deserve the success of your channel. Thank you.
The dogs you have look so calm on the videos, I'd love you to fix my lab for a video because he's an absolute nutter, lunging, barking, pulling....he'd be perfect for a video to show how good you are 👍
I have the same issues with the same breed. Keen to watch the follow up video.
You sir, are inspiring, love you technique and the response you get from your clients... 😍 for the clients and 🙏💋
Thank you so much for this!
Great video! Thank you so much! We will be trying this on tomorrows walk!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really would like to see the owners walking this retriever right after and see the progression of the dog over time in order to have confidence in your approche. I urgently need to adopt an approach which will work for my strong, young dog both for pulling and for serious aggression towards other dogs.
Awesome videos! Thank you so much! God bless!
Thank you so much!!!🤩 My dog stopped pulling just in few days.🙏🤝
So good to hear Samuel!
@@willathertoncaninetraining but Can you do tutorial how to teach the dog to fetch?
This is incredible work mate, thanks for showing us how it's done.
I was wondering about how to train our 4.5 month golden off leash walks/ hikes!
how is it going? what did you find? I have a 4 mo lab that I have been free-running around our acreage, working on recall under increasing distance and distractions. kibble is working so far.
My 10 month old ridgeback x lab won’t give me eye contact for engagement. I’ve only had her 10 days but she just doesn’t give eye contact. Any tips? Is she possibly grieving former owners?
Will is the best!
Truly brilliant techniques. Love these videos. So glad I found your channel 😊
Just watched this video & would like to watch the next one (follow up one) as this would be very helpful for my 2yr old lab, thanks!
Did you find the 2nd one? I can’t find it 😭
Amazing transformation!
Fantastic content. Excellent Thank You.
Oh what a lovely golden
You are brilliant man. Ive got a 9 month old black labrador retriever. Hes amazing on recall so o keep him off the lead 8p% of the time. But he pulls a lot on the lead. Ive just bought a slip lead for him so hoping this works. Youre videos are really helpful. And I agree with you: labradir retrievers are the best dogs ever!!
Brilliant content mate. Thank you 👏🏼👏🏼
Love all your videos - amazing content and appreciate the explanations and detail in each video!
Second this comment. When we're on walks it's as if I don't exist. Any help on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks!
@@RichQuintyn I'm not a professional but I would suggest building engagement in an environment with minimal distraction just to build the foundation of the dog engaging with you.
Prong collar
@@convidtruthshallout I've used prongs before but I think for a 5 month old it's a bit too much
@@RichQuintyn I finally did it and bought a Herm Sprenger 2.25!
He is very strong boy and a strong puller too, so I’m really hoping this helps to make our walks much more enjoyable for us both🥰
The direction changing and the right collar is the best correction for this.
Thank you so much for sharing these tools for loose lead walking ❤️🇦🇺
Great video, thank you! I will be trying this technique with my 2 year dog which I have addopted recently from a dog shelter here in Portugal. She is a big dog and needs rules!
Man it looks so easy..reality is different..i try this with my cane corso everyday and it feels like in the movie "Groundhog Day"..nothing changes
I just found your channel. Thank you for this! I’m starting tomorrow. Now to look for reactive dog videos of yours 😎
Thx 🐾🐾
Hopefully our videos has given you some good tips on how to tackle the pulling behaviour 😊
I wish I lived near you, I've got an American bulldog staffy cross and he's strong and pulls all the time and towards other dogs, going to need to try this!!
You are a good trainer ,excellent leadership skills, keep up the good work.
Super advice time and again! Thank you
Hi I love your videos. I need some help I have two male dogs who I love to bits but have started fighting all the time both me and my husband have been bitten through it. We now have muzzled the instagater
Could I ask where is the breakdown video of this that you mentioned, Seven days to perfect heal?
I can't wait for you to sell that treat pouch! I need it!
Same! I’d love to see your products on Amazon.
Lovely dog.
can't wait for the second part !
This dog seems very obedient. I'd love to see a real strong puller get trained.
Look at the many other leash walking videos this dude has. He's got serious pullers being trained.
Or maby he has been training this dog but using him to show what to do not making it all in one 8 min video
Your fantastic, I watch all your videos, will make me a good dog owner when I eventually get one.
Awesome technique. Thanks for sharing😀
P.S. product links not working…
Keep going, you've got this!
You are amazing will athurton. Greetings from india
my dogs favorite treats(pizza) and my praising gets ignored when we are outside. she wont look at me or focus on me or the treats all. but your video helped me realize I was being impatient and wasn't stopping enough! and need to try to train her in a less distracting environment first
thanks for this very well informed
Love ur videos thank you so much!!
