I'm not a Japanese car guy, but the 2JZ is near and dear to my heart. My roommate had a 94 Supra turbo and I have fond memories of helping him pull the original motor to swap out the short block for a fresh replacement Toyota one (it was abused be for he had it). Sadly, we lost him in an tragic accident (that was in no way his fault) in that car about a year later. He loved that car more than anything, so the Supra and the 2JZ will always be special to me. It's been a few years but this reminds me of my first auto mechanic work. My dad's 68 Chrysler Newport was running rough I told him the library had books. Chilton manual in hand, I was able to troubleshoot the rough running 383 that led me to discover a worn timing chain. All we had was a cheap socket set and wrenches to use for my first engine attempt. The book had every step needed for a novice. I was successful and saved my pop a few hundred bucks way back in 1972. With all the online tutorials available today, anyone with basic hand-eye coordination can tackle a lot of jobs. Jared is right on the money (you'll save!).

I’m a bit stunned about the “Castrol stains” statement.
I had been using Castrol GTX high mileage (exclusively) in my Subaru for 14 years and every time I took the valve covers off, the internals looked brand new, no discoloring, just pure clean fresh aluminum color, even with 276,000 on the odometer.

Doing a re-ring on an infamous oil-burning Toyota 4-cylinder next month. Total cost will be in $300 range for parts plus fluids that needed changing anyway so all in under $500. Of course it is intimidating even though I have been working on cars for decades and have refreshed more than a few engines. For a pro it is book time around 11 hours and I am scheduling 18 with the option to roll to the next weekend as needed because the last things you want to do is rush a job. This is literally a text book "follow the FSM steps" job with only two less-than-common tools you cannot borrow from the parts store.
I am self taught because I watched my parents and their friends getting screwed by a combination of dealer and independant mechanics that were less than honest. My first mechanical job was a clutch in their S10 after it had killed two in 54K miles...in a gravel driveway with a Chilton's manual, borrowed tools and a family friend that was a professional mechanic checking in on me each night after work. You learn in a variety of different ways but physically doing it is a great teacher.

  • @docgiggles130
    @docgiggles130 Год назад

I picked up a 2007 Chevy HHR for $500 because it needed more work that the shop rate was more then the car was worth. Between buying parts from online shops for less than a local shop charged and going to wreaking yards for missing bits, I ended up putting $1200 into the car. I did the work over 2 months in my spare time. It's now worth over $4000 and will run for years before needing anything more than brakes, tires, and oil changes.
I enjoyed all the time I spent working on it. I added a roof rack to it because I happened to find one in a wreaking yard. Now I'm not afraid to dig into bigger car projects because of this car. I learned more about myself and what I can do if I let go of the fear.
Pick up a cheap car that needs work and enjoy the build. It doesn't need to be some sports car that you are building to race. It can be something slow and fun to just cruise around in. There are a lot of fun cars out there just waiting for someone to come give them a new chance at life.

Took it to the dealer to have them do the trans service @110k and only did that because they have the machine that hooks into and removes almost all the fluid in the trans and torque converter. And I could not find a better price on that much transmission WS fluid, so it made more sense for them to do that. Anyway glad to see the upload.

Toyota/Lexus are the only manufacturer I've seen where most of their engines have very few engineering flaws from day one - every now and then they have issues (e.g. water pumps often aren't great, and as per this video, valve seals - mostly fairly minor stuff though). My niece has a IS200 with the 1G-FE engine in it, which she inherited from my sister-in-law, who inherited it from my mother-in-law - so it's three generations now in the family since my mother-in-law bought it in 2008, and it's had a horrific life as none of them have cared for it at all (I've done 2 oil changes on it for them, both times because it was way overdue - but not sure how many others it has actually had - amazingly last time I looked at it, there was still very little evidence of sludging) It's gone from a near new, very low mileage car to a very high mileage, flaky paint dent bucket full of dog hair, McDonalds wrappers & used diapers, and it's been broken into and vandalized multiple times - but damn, that thing just keeps going despite hardly seeing an oil change.

Actually, a little research will show you...
because its based off a non-interference engine, it itself is also non-interference.

@@804_Rider the GTE VVti is non interference, the 2JZGE non turbo VVTi IS interference. I've had both, a non - vvti 2JZGE in my 92 Supra and a vvti 2JZ in my IS300.

Having been a car guy for over 30 years, I can say I've seen many 300,000 vehicles from just about every manufacturer. The secret is maintenance maintenance maintenance. I've also seen many dead ones. Most are do to extended oil change intervals. Including the 2jz they die just like all of them.

Little word to the wise: if you need to do a head gasket job on a 3S, 5S, 1JZ or 2JZ, buy the toyo tool and DO THE VALVE STEM SEALS!!!! No worse feeling in the world than to cheap out on the tool and skip the seals only to get everything back together and oil start billowing from your exhaust. Found that out the hard way with my 93 Celica GT 5SFE.

This is why these engine or these cars makes the perfect tuner car. 300k miles stock and it looks like that. You can definitely build the engine up a bit slap on a turbo and it should run like stock. The potential they have is unbelievable.

I use Schaeffers. We have always used it in our cars. Has never let us down. First few oil changes are always really dirty but i had a 200k mile k20 in my 09 si that i bought with 30k on it. Used Schaeffers on the first oil change. Always changed at 5k my engine looked like new when we took it out to build a k20/k24 Frankenstein. I was impressed to say the least.

He missed the valve adjustment, probably good measure at this mileage, a fair amount of mine were out of spec at 120k, also I recommend the aisin tbk along with cam and crank seals with this service

Hey Jarrod, I've watched your show now for a while and love it, with what you were saying about making memories, you sounded like this is a personal thing, as though someone in your life is going through a very bad medical patch with maybe a 50 50 outcome, I hope all is well and this is just a misinterpretation of how you sounded

Looks about like the 2jz-ge did that was in my sc300 when I did valve covers at around 285k miles..I was kind of in awe how clean it was. Dang making me miss that car/wish I didn't sell it now lol!
