@@buddsmokengood I'm enjoying the hell out this, even if I feel guilty being fascinated by Jerrod's misery. This reminds of of my days working at Standard Aero as an overhaul inspector. Doesn't matter if it's a 4 cylinder Lycoming, an 1830 P&W radial or an LS V8, there is always a mystery to solve when a rebuild goes wrong. My guess, for what it's worth... a poor quality shell? People are selling soft cams and lifters these days. Aha! The end reveals a hydro lock, but it couldn't gave been major if the rod didn't get bent.

I like the fact that you are one who freely admits you were wrong. It is too easy to hide behind the camera and with a little bit of editing and make it look like you know it all. And inspires others too. I have a rare optioned 2001 VR6 GTI that several years back kicked a rod bearing. It took me a couple years to get bottom all rebuilt. Then it decided to start burning oil cause (what I hope) is valve stem seals cause I didnt rebuild head.
It has sat now for four years with me not even wanting to look at it, but Jared is giving that motivation to want to work on my stuff again.

Glad to know the damage wasn't worse than we all thought and Lazarus will rise once again! Also, i would love to see a small redesign of the wastegate dumps, i'm not a fan of them hanging of the front like that, going up the hood would be way better.
I do very much appreciate the positive energy you're putting out in this video, despite the irritation I know you must feel after working so hard and just one little misjusdgment might have been the thing that killed it.
I really enjoy your videos. Your process, even your speech patterns in the way you explain things is pretty much exactly the same as my mentor in the software development field. It's almost a comfort because he taught me that I can do anything. The best advice he ever gave was "It's not about knowing all the answers, it's about asking the right questions" and I clearly see you take that approach as well.

Nice diag - puzzle solved. Sorry about the cost involved - in the midst of a rebuild that was a head scratcher until we pressurized the cooling system for a couple days, and found the exhaust filling with coolant - small SAI/coolant crack in the head. Really hard to move forward until you have the smoking gun. Then you get to start writing cheques :(
Any idea what the cloth-like material in the pickup was? Hopefully that's the end of it!

As someone who has done a lot of mishap investigations, great job working through all the possibilities and considering ALL the data.
I'm a big believer in marking the bolts with a paint pen after they are torqued.
Though disheartening to see the new engine ruined so fast... Good video to help show us the information and knowledge that Jared carries and shares with all of us.

I’ve tried to make how to videos on repairs with my old supercharged m3 and my current hellcat.
It takes so long to switch camera angles, Start, stop, ect that I always just stop filming and finish the job. It more than doubles the time of my jobs. Maybe soon I’ll get a legit camera and a tri-pod.

Edit: Cleetus actually just posted a video on his channel, rebuilding Leroy. He mentioned that most of Leroy’s rods were bent, but you could only visually tell on 1 of them. The rest were bent, but it’s only discovered if you measure the rod. His guy Sam was the one that measured the rods and found them out of spec. It’s awesome being able to learn this technical advice from Guys like you.

Trying to really express the importance of patience, observation, critically analyzing the findings from that observation, and being able to humble yourself down to asking around the people you trust with experience to help when you're not sure are lessons that everyone needs to hear that applies to pretty much everything in life.
The tangents while exploring the situation kind of remind of Adrian Black when he's going through old computers/electronics. Both of you are taking the audience along for the ride showing your thought process along the way and aren't just willing to jump in with corrections but are happy to do so to help everyone learn and improve.
I remember talking to some people in the BMW/Euro community back when I got my E36's before I decided to engine swap them. Those people were some of the most aggressive closed off people I had ever talked to at the time when it came to the electronic side of the equation. I heard over and over basically "we're not telling you how to do this because you'll take our work". On the flip side when I first moved to Toyota for most of my engines in projects (mostly 2AZ I4, 1GR V6, and 1UZ V8) I had friends in Japan that were jumping at helping out with everything from start to finish while I was there for other work and vacation and long after. To be fair I never have had issues with Merc Diesel people nor anyone when I worked with 20v 1.8t or TDI VW stuff...maybe it was just the BMW people?
Jared I love your content, I'm typing this right before your segway into the hello fresh advertisement. I actually cooked one of their meals about half an hour ago. For context, I am 19, and I have never cooked chicken in my life. The instructions were so clear and the food came out so well, I didn't give myself salmonella and I also reversed my dislike of gravy. I highly suggest hello fresh if you're if you have a hard time figuring out what to eat, or if you're new to cooking.

I really like these videos where I learn something. Thats pretty easy for me. Cause I know very little about engine building. But I have a mechanical mind. And I love getting "aha" moments of understanding and comprehenshion of the process.
I've done that in a couple of my videos; cut in and correct myself once I figured out my original hypothesis was wrong. It's good you figured it out. It makes sense it was a hydrolock situation with only one bearing being hurt instead of multiples. I have a hurt motor in my car right now that I have no desire to work on. It lost oil pressure and has oil full of sparklies, but I just dont care to tear it apart at this point to figure out what is even hurt (other than a bearing.)
Right after my first grandchild was born, I was helping out by cooking for my daughter. She had purchased Hello Fresh. I had never tried them before, but they turned out to be really nice meals and very convenient. The ingredients were fresh and the recipe cards were full color and well written. Your are worth your weight in gold and and especially excell in the Toyota/Lexus service knowledge. The service department would have there own money printing machine! another good thing is check the rod bearing caps torque with a torque wrench before removing especially in a high dollar engine helps remove all doubt and questions when all said and done.

My old Milwaukee at work does that sometimes and you can switch direction take the battery out put it back and it will work oddly enough.
I remember cringing at the end of that 2-step test and thought "that didn't sound good"...but at least you have the answer.

Dang man, I've been breaking my rear end to turbo my 2004 Acura TL on my own after fabricating everything to fit and it runs, makes boost, and pulls decently, but it needs a tune and it also needs some work because I keep fighting random exhaust leaks and its driving me nuts. I'm not trying to make crazy power, just some extra pull, so 5-8 psi is plenty. It has all of the supporting mods, but I can't win with these random exhaust leaks. I even had the rear flange milled perfectly flat and it's STILL leaking from the rear (even with a new gasket coated in copper RTV, and my engine has the exhaust manifolds cast into the heads, so it's just a 4 bolt flange outlet). I am absolutely not a professional fabricator, but if you could see what I built out of my amateur garage with nothing more than stainless pipe and a Lincoln MIG welder, you'd be surprised.

I’d love to see you get a first gen 4Runner.. 86-89 22re with ifs.
Then make a series on how to solid axle swap it with a kit you can buy online like trail gear. That way you can show how to rebuild the axle as well. Toyota axles only.

There is that big beauty 80series cruiser in the yard but I’ve already done all the axles and transfercase upgrades before RUclips time!

I’m 22 and I daily drive my 86 4Runner. I’m buying a 84 Toyota pickup that’s been on a hill for 10 years maybe more for $1500 and I plan to use its axle on my 4Runner. I thought about fixing the pickup.. I might do that if possible but the window has been cracked open that entire time… I live in Colville Washington by Idaho and Canada.. so you can imagine what the interior might look like. I’m told the 22r needs the head.. something in the valve train got messed up.. but could be anything.

Jared, can you put a hard upper limit for fuelling into the map, that is considerably less than the combustion space volume, to prevent a reoccurrence of the hydro-locking. I also suspect that the excess fuelling was combined with a failure of the ignition on cylinder 1, so that by the time the piston got up to TDC, there was a large amount of unburnt fuel still present.
There are lots of prebuilt safety’s built into the dominator and you can even create your own, but the hardware is only as good as what you tell it to do. Some 1s and 0s got crossed in exhaustion while the tune was getting set up, I didn’t have hands on it myself so I can’t answer exactly what.
